The day isn't over yet, but I've gotten over 4 miles of rucking in today. 🎒 One outing was the normal morning workout, and one was a simple quick ruck to the store for dinner stuff. ❤️ HRV was a little low today, so the weight was low and the pace was easy each time. But I still got it in, and I felt pretty good doing it. 👍🏻 A lot of this just comes down to mindset. We spend so much time is modern humans looking for the efficient way to do things that we miss out on the opportunity to keep moving throughout the day. I find myself having to fight that efficiency instinct in my brain in order to get in all the movement I need to be a healthy human. Yesterdays HRV was pretty low, so instead of one long ruck with a heavyweight (my normal 30#) I did a few smaller rucks with a lighter weight (20#). And that's one of the things I love about rucking, the ease of just throwing on your backpack to do whatever activity you have in mind. 🎒 But this morning I was back to it with a 30 pound ruck and a three miler. The journey of 100 miles begins with…three. Well, at least in this case. 👟 The @goruck challenge for October 2020 is supporting the United War Veterans Council, by pledging money and rucking 25, 50, 75, or 100 miles by Veterans' Day. And I'm going for the big hairy audacious goal and going for 100. 🎒 Why? Well, for one, like pretty much everyone else, COVID-19 and the associated pandemic restrictions have me a bit down in the dumps. I'm tired of working from home. I'm tired of being in the same place all day, every day. I've been cooped up all summer and I haven't been taking particularly good care of myself. In fact, if it weren't for my martial arts class for 3.5 hours a week, I'd probably have lost my mind by now. I've been short with people, I've been escaping with iPhone games, and frankly I'm tired of it. I need to get out more. I need to be active. And what better way to do it than taking on a challenge like this? 👍🏻 So, it's begun. 3.02 miles today. 96.98 to go. And it's gonna get done. Duncan and I took on our latest #rucking adventure today, the #911heroesrun to benefit the @travismanionfoundation. The prescribed distance was a 5K, but Duncan of course wanted to hike down to his high school so we went about twice that distance. 🎒 It was a beautiful day for a ruck, especially when we were thinking about all the people affected by 9/11. Just helping my son with his homework tonight! He's doing virtual classes with the awesome staff at #whetstonehighschool, and his PE teacher assigned them what? 🏃🏻🎒 That's right: #rucking! They're to do a total of three miles and track it for the first week of PE. Mr. Iquina at WHS knows what's up, for sure. So Duncan and I headed out for a mile or so after I got home from martial arts last night. Another awesome ruck with my number one guy today! Just a smidge under four miles, me with 31# and he with 23#. He was sporting every one of the patches he's earned, especially his new #quarantinestarcourse Biohazard patch. After getting the family and kids all set with a routine after the influx of #covid19 #quarantining, I forgot to take stock of one person's s**t: mine. Yes, I have a son on the autism spectrum and getting his routine and needs taken care of as much as we can has been challenging at times. And of course, every parent has gone through this during the past couple of months. It's been rough at times. 🦠 And while I've been getting more sleep and the like, and I've not exactly been a slug (heck, I've done two #diystarcourse events in this time!), I haven't gotten my own butt in order like I should have. I've discovered that having the family home 24/7 has been VERY challenging, as there's been no just plain "me time" to speak of. 🛌 So, who came to the rescue? The same person who's come to my rescue each time I've gotten off the horse a bit: @morningcoach. I've been trying to catch up with the morning #coachcast and the other morning I heard an episode that kicked me in the butt. So here I am, back out in the earlier morning and getting the day started right. 🎒 This isn't a #rucking lost, though I am clearly getting some rucking in this morning. This isn't an exercise post, or a get-up-early post, or any of that. This is a simple reminder to everyone that we all need to make time for ourselves in order to benefit from this time of upheaval. Everyone's in the same boat, we all have challenges that we've not had to face before. And the way we will remember this time is by what we took out of it. For me, I want to take out more discipline, more sense of doing what needs to be done - not just for the family but for myself. Neat things about that - making myself the best I can be helps my family do the same. As another mentor and friend of mine, Paul Kyriazi, has said "I'll be selfish for you, and you be selfish for me." 🌎 Let's all take care of ourselves and each other and make this quarantine the best thing that's ever hit this world. We said that a number of times during this ruck today. We lost Moira at the halfway point, but figured she still got her 5K patch, so will order that for her. We had to make a stop here, because the school has been awesome for him as he transitioned out of his all autism school to a typical high school. He's been on the swim team, he's gotten honor roll every term he's been at school, and this place has just been fantastic.
