I’m collecting fun facts about Columbo as observed from episodes
s2e4 “Dagger of the Mind”
- he can flick small objects with his thumb with great accuracy
s3e2 “Any Old Port in a Storm”
- he’s Italian on both sides of his family
- he can’t sing (at least according to himself, he sadly does not give an example)
- he has really bad handwriting
- he’s a bit of a lightweight with alcohol
- he and Mrs Columbo have at least 1 kid
- he can memorize a lot of information very quickly if he’s studying a specific topic

Columbo S3E2: “Any Old Port in a Storm” (1973)
Fern spotted at 1:08:47, in this flower arrangement. Another disappointment -- to wait so long just for this to be the only fern in the episode!

Bonus plant: this big parlor palm at 54:45. I could never keep these guys alive, but the characters in Columbo seem to have no such problems.

Any Old Port in a Storm (S3E2) is one of my favorite episodes of Columbo. It’s charming as hell. I love the old trope of archrivals who respect, even admire, each other. It makes me feel good about the conflict. I would even describe it as cozy. And, the snootiness of connoisseur culture aside, the autistic foodie in me can’t help but admire making a single type of food (in this case, wine) one’s primary special interest. Donald Pleasence is a charismatic actor and his interactions with Peter Falk are a pleasure to watch. This one puts the comfort in “comfort show”.

UltraInfiniteColumboReviews
My takes on Columbo episodes as I watch them, contains spoilers!
S1E1 - This is apparently the top-rated Columbo episode and I can see why. We love when mystery authors commit murder so much that it happens again in a later season. Contains a gatekeep gaslight girlboss.
S1E2 - Columbo vs. a private investigator so it's a lot of "two men, alike but different." That's the only notable thing I remember from this episode.
S1E3 - FINALLY we get the old man murder culprit seducing the young pretty lady. Also a pretty great moment where it's canonically acknowledged that the department keeps Columbo around to unleash on high profile figures like some kind of incredibly untidy hunting hound.
S1E4 - There's a lot of art references in this episode. Also murderers need to stop giving Columbo keys to their houses and letting him snoop around unsupervised. You deserve to go to jail at that point for Idiot Crimes.
S1E5 - Another girlboss but she's a little messed up actually! The villain is pretty bonkers, gave me Sapphira/Sirena vibes.
S1E6 - I don't understand the logic of this villain's plan or how Columbo solved it, I was too distracted by his wild fashion sense and mannerisms.
S1E7 - INTENSE second-hand embarrassment from Columbo getting part of a building dug up. I like the cowboy guy.
S2E1 - Not much I recall from this episode other than the murderer is a cut-and-dry douchebag.
S2E2 - A mystery within a mystery: a kidnapping becoming a murder! I appreciate when they mix things up like this.
S2E4 - Our villains are a pair of wacky actors and it's very fun to watch! Also Columbo is in England for some reason. They make exactly one Sherlock Holmes reference, I expected a ton more to be honest.
S2E5 - I don't really understand why the murderer murdered in this one. But she's very pretty and Columbo agrees with me.
S2E6 - Spock is in this one!
S2E7 - Sometimes the murderers have real shit excuses for murdering and this is definitely one of those. I feel like they tried to do something with the villain being HOH but it ends up feeling clunky.
S2E8 - This one is a real whodunit right to the end! I quite like it although the plot confused me a little. Also Columbo is so embarrassing in this episode, I was physically cringing at times. Problematic fav.
S3E1 - First time I agree with the murderer. I think she deserves a little murdering as a treat. I would let her murder me if she wanted.
S3E2 - The villain in this one is really fun and a great contrast with Columbo. Columbo reconnects with his Italian wine heritage. I had to look up the logic of how he solved it though, it's confusing.
S3E3 - They kept referencing how Columbo is Italian and how the mafia exists and it made me wonder "Is someone going to accuse Columbo of being in the mafia?" This did not happen.
S3E4 - Columbo is in peak form in this episode as both a really smart and really annoying guy. He manages to stay one step ahead of the villain who is himself quite cunning. It's fun to see the detective get to flex a bit, like watching a horse run real fast.
S3E5 - Sometimes the cinematography gets very artistic, the beginning of this episode is one of those times. Columbo orders expensive chili. The real favorite of this episode is that one guy who just really loves bombs.
S3E6 - Columbo, stop foisting your dog onto people! Also I love old-timey depictions of robots, they're so earnest.
S3E7 - Columbo is reminded of his own mortality. I would love to see more episodes of Columbo teaming up with an FAA officer to solve an airplane crash - airplane crashes are a severely underutilized scenario in mysteries. Very touching scene at the end with the villain.
S3E8 - Love the plot twist of who the villain is. Great ending, great episode.
S4E1 - GOOD episode, definitely one of my favorites plot-wise. Really buff guy in this one. We get Gym Columbo.
S4E2 - The final scene is great, and seeing the clip on Youtube is the reason I started watching Columbo.
S4E3 - We're treated to some crime-preparation ASMR at the beginning. Later we almost get a Columbo First Name Reveal, and in the same conversation Columbo's outfit gets dissed.
S4E4 - Probably my favorite episode so far, benefits greatly from watching at least one other Columbo episode where he's normal. This episode has peeled, beachy shirt Columbo. He's unhinged, he's using a pencil to look for fingerprints, he's poolside. We get some Wife Lore and I think they even snuck in a reference to their sex life? Also this episode has some really nice cinematic shots for some reason?? Highly recommended.
S4E5 - COLUMBO HAS A GUN. Also I love the wife, she has great outfits and great hair.
S4E6 - Some more ASMR in the beginning but this time it's definitely cursed - or the internet has ruined me. Love the doctor lady, she's very pretty and reminds me of Vivian. A lot of pretty ladies all in a row in these episodes, or I think Columbo is making me like 70's hair? We also get to see Columbo shout at someone and pretty much tell the murderer to his face that he's the main suspect. Always a treat to see Confrontational Columbo (Confrombo) though I do prefer when he's a nice-but-irritating, funny Lil Guy.
S5E1 - Pretty standard episode where Columbo avoids having a gun, up until the absolutely grim, heartbreaking ending. That final scene, that soft "I don't think she even remembers killing him" is going to stick with me for a while. My new favorite alongside the cruise episode, two episodes vastly different in tone.
S5E2 - Columbo calls himself the fuzz. This is a lukewarm episode.
S5E3 - There's a weird scene where Columbo can't stop ogling a dancer. It seems very out-of-character. The Columbo I know is beholden to no earthly desires save that of chili and his wife.
S5E4 - I thought I'd like this episode a lot more than I did. The murderer had a lame excuse for murdering in my opinion - not that there's usually a good reason...
S5E5 - Columbo vs. a magician! I like this episode.
*S5E6 - All the Columbo guides say to skip this episode. Apparently the cast thought the show was being canceled so they were all drunk and it shows. I haven't watched it yet, I'm just putting this disclaimer here.
S6E1 - Kirk is in this one!
S6E2 - THEY CUT COLUMBO'S HAIR. I want that lady's cameo broach.
S6E3 - This episode has a terrible title but I think the villain is compelling, and we get a touching moment with some Columbo Lore in the end scene. The villain's wife sucks to a comical degree. I totally thought the villain's partner was his partner at first.
S7E1 - FANTASTIC EPISODE featuring another homicidal mystery author. The way she does the murder is probably the most traumatizing I've seen so far. It does seem like, much like the previous mystery author murderer, she can't help but hand Columbo evidence to see what he does with it. I respect her dedication to the craft (of mystery) but lady, that will get you arrested.
