i mentioned this to my mom and this sparked a conversation in which i concluded that columbo can teleport, his car is an alternate version of the tardis, and he's a time lord named the inspector (or the lieutenant, since my mom insists that's his first name lol)
i've seen maybe three episodes of doctor who but this is what i've decided
watched the first episode of columbo. ngl it was pretty hard to sit still and stare at a screen for over an hour, but i gotta say, i get why people liked it so much.
(having said that, boy l.a. in the 70s was white)
#columbo#lt columbo#doctor who#feels weird to be posting about either of those on tumblr ngl#like i'm not the live action tv guy. i'm the unhinged rants about cartoon child soldier yuri and old man war crime yaoi guy

Who is your number one favorite Fictional Antagonist from Media? Rules are as follows, feel free to ignore:
If you want to choose a recurring villain like Bowser or The Joker, you have to choose a particular incarnation of this character. Like Alan Moore's Joker or Paper Mario 64's Bowser.
Specific Characters Only. You can't say "Haunted Houses that aren't haunted by, like, a ghost or anything specific" like my mom wanted to.
Villainous Duos like Boris & Natasha are accepted.
People have a hard time picking a #1, so you're allowed to list as many runner-ups as you like. Listen to your heart.
Protagonists who are their own worst enemies don't count!
Villainous characters who are protagonists in their story are very begrudgingly accepted. Whether or not George Costanza (A Villainous Protagonist) or Detective Columbo (A Heroic Antagonist) count is beyond the scope of this paper.
Thank you for your time!
Oooh this is a toughy. I think it has to be GLaDOS though, specifically her in Portal 2 where I feel she really comes into her own as a character. Wonderfully written, and it's always a treat to hear what ridiculous nonsense she is going to spout next. Also something something lesbian yearning something something this too is yuri.
Runner ups in no particular order: Flowey, Queen (Deltarune), Prince Zuko, Dr. Starline, Dr. Eggman specifically in post-reboot Archie Sonic.

Reference material for the linguist in Mundane Kasa Sona. She's like this (in intensity), and if he was also an ADHD disaster, they'd look suspiciously similar. Female Columbo by way of Yuri Knorozov.
And the only reason she doesn't currently have a cat is that I don't want the reader constantly thinking "but who is feeding the cat?" while she's having an Adventure and can't make it back home. You don't always get the luxury to coordinate pet-sitters when The Call happens, you know?
Her computer system is named "kotek" ("kitten" in Polish) , however.

One of the worst episodes of Columbo, by far, has to be By "Dawn's Early Light." But even other worse episodes, like some of the ABC series episodes, or Lovely But Lethal had some things going for it like attempts at genre switch and toxic yuri, Dawns Early Light offers nothing new in terms of risk or excitement. It's set at a military compound. So what? That doesn't tell me anything about the characters. Not to mention, said characters don't break stereotypes and in fact act just like the stereotypical military person acts. It's so obvious Columbo can tell who dun it as if the beginning didn't even need to give the character exposition or backstory - that the drill sergeant did it is just like screaming, "the butler did it!" Actually, it would be more surprising if the butler didn't do it for a change. So no, what could have been a cartoon shift and over in 20 minutes is instead stretched out to the usual Columbo episode length of 1 hour and 30 minutes give or take some minutes. That length works for other Columbo episodes where there's excitement and a clear plot being followed and gathering clues. Instead, Columbo reveals himself as a villain in a psychological thriller series (think Hannibal Lecter minus the cannibalism. Ok. Maybe some cannibalism) and taunts his victim, torturing them and messing with their mind in various ways that if the sergeant didn't do it before, they sure did now! But even that sounds exciting on paper. Instead, we're treated to slice-of-life scenes not unlike that of Hayao Miyazaki, except those scenes usually served a purpose. Here, it's not even anti-military. Which isn't to say it made the military more appealing, either, and if anything, refused to glamorize the military in such a way that it was boring. Yes, the problem with this episode is it took "The Banality of Evil" literally. How do you feel sucking the life out of anything potentially interesting? It's so dull and without purpose I want to turn off my critical thinking skills because it's not like those are leading anywhere either. Or rather, no matter the skill, it all ends up in the same place: the dumps. It's rather sad. As far as Copaganda goes, Columbo was usually the tee-hee wholesome Copaganda that made it silly and refused to show blood. It wasn't always the "La and Order: SVU" or CSI Miami. Don't even get me started on the repugnance that was "Dragnet".
Phew. That was a mouthful.
In short, Shame On You, Levinson and Link.
