Clothing gate season 1: decoding the colors!
Easy enough - everyone has a designated color based on their room.
Lucas is red
Max is orange
El is pink (hard to distinguish i know but it's pink)
Dustin is green
Will is yellow (ofc)
Mike is blue (also note the pillowcase striped in the party colors - red, blue, green, and yellow)
This color follows them into their clothing choices. It's not as obvious as the rooms of course. They all seem to gravitate towards blue as the neutral color in their outfits (Mike), and of course not every outfit is as significant.
What's interesting is that they tend to all start of as blue/neutral colors in the first scene, and everyone except for Mike has yellow accents in their clothing -- a nod to Will's disappearance no doubt.
In the second scene, their colours are once again established
Mike has blue - with yellow stripes; he's clearly upset about Will and that's on his mind. Lucas obviously has the red sleeves, and Dustin is a greenish-blue. it's mostly blue but I think it's because they generally shy away from the color green in the first season.
Now, this is the first color we see El in (other than the hospital gown) - it's yellow. Will's color. It's during the time that she's wearing this that she's mistaken for Will - the guys at Benny's thought it could have been Will, Hopper thinks she's Will, and the boys find her in the forest when they were looking for will.
I can talk forever about how El's clothing represents who's got a hold on her or who's influencing her the most. For all of season 1 and 2, she's always in someone else's clothing. This shows how much thought they put into using clothing to tie people together.
Here we have El in Mike's clothing, while Mike is telling her what to do and wear.
I'm not the first to say this but something something pink blonde girl with boy in blue as imagery for what they think they should be feeling.
Dustin back in a green-blueish shirt, Lucas in red/warm colors, El is wearing her I want to fit in outfit covered up by Mike's jacket, and Mike is in YELLOW - his mind is clearly on finding Will.
Here we once again establish the importance of the clothing imagery - El realising she's pretending to be something she's not, she's not being honest and hiding what she's done.
Funnily enough, he's wearing yellow (and green?) when he kisses El. The most non-Mike outfit in the entire show - I can perceive it as green and brown/warm tone stripes, indicating that he's probably being influenced by Lucas and Dustin (aka pushed into thinking he has feelings for El). El is already wearing Hopper's jacket, pointing towards the shift in influence and who's taking care of her.
Meanwhile - back in episode one, this is Will's outfit as he goes missing:
still the yellow striped shirt of course, yet in the jacket he puts on as he leaves, there's a lot of red color, bringing out the red in his sleeves more easily. This hints at him being in danger -- the Upside Down pulling at him. (more on this in season 2)
Here you see Will at the end of season 1 - the only other outfit he gets to wear other than the hospital gown or flashbacks. His shirt is red, not Will's color, indicating that the Upside Down / Vecna still has its hold on him. He's still not safe.

do you guys ever think about how Wyll is introduced as an archetypal fantasy hero, but then it turns out he’s a warlock, who made a pact with a devil. Do you ever think about how Ansur is described as this fantastical dragon of myth, but then when you find him, he’s turned into an undead monstrosity. Do you think about how when Wyll does the right thing, he is punished to become more monstrous. Do you think about how as Wyll’s warlock powers grow, his spells get more horrific. Do you think about how Ansur was killed by his closest friend. Do think about how Wyll was cast out by the most important person in his life. do you guys ever think about Ansur and Wyll.

i haven't finished my season 3 rewatch yet for clothing/color gate but this is the color El is wearing when Mike tells everyone he 'loves her'. Interestingly, the only other time she wears yellow is when she's in the Benny's shirt and everyone mistakes her for Will. and mike has a yellow collar to match
