trips to the amazon,
trips to the amazon,
The Amazon Rainforest, often dubbed the "lungs of the Earth," is a sprawling, biodiverse wonderland stretching across nine countries in South America. From its lush canopies to its winding rivers, a trip to the Amazon is nothing short of a grand adventure. Here’s a guide to help you navigate this incredible destination.
Choosing Your Destination The Amazon spans several countries, each offering unique experiences:
Brazil: The majority of the Amazon is in Brazil. Key entry points include Manaus and Belém. Manaus, a bustling city at the heart of the rainforest, serves as a gateway to the river and jungle tours. Peru: Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado are primary access points. Peru’s Amazon region offers rich indigenous cultures and varied wildlife. Colombia: Leticia, located at the tripoint of Colombia, Brazil, and Peru, provides a unique cultural blend and access to pristine rainforest areas.
Best Time to Visit The Amazon has a tropical climate, with a rainy and a dry season:
Dry Season (June to November): Generally, it’s easier to navigate the forest trails and rivers. However, be prepared for occasional rain. Rainy Season (December to May): Rivers swell, providing opportunities for flooded forest explorations. The rainforest is lush and vibrant, but trails can be muddy and challenging.
Key Experiences Wildlife Watching: The Amazon is home to an astounding variety of wildlife, including jaguars, sloths, monkeys, and countless bird species. A guided wildlife tour increases your chances of spotting these elusive creatures. River Cruises: Experience the Amazon from the water on a river cruise. These cruises often include excursions into the jungle, visits to local communities, and opportunities for wildlife spotting. Jungle Treks: Embark on guided hikes through the rainforest to explore its flora and fauna up close. Guides can provide insights into the ecosystem, medicinal plants, and survival skills. Cultural Encounters: Visit indigenous communities to learn about their traditional lifestyles, crafts, and beliefs. These interactions offer a profound understanding of the cultural heritage of the Amazon.
Essential Tips Health Precautions: Consult a travel doctor before your trip. Vaccinations for diseases like yellow fever, typhoid, and hepatitis are recommended. Also, malaria prophylaxis might be necessary. Packing: Lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing, waterproof gear, insect repellent, and sunscreen are essentials. Binoculars and a good camera will enhance your wildlife and scenery viewing. Respect for Nature: The Amazon is a delicate ecosystem. Follow all guidelines from your guides to minimize your impact on the environment.
Sustainable Travel Preserving the Amazon’s delicate balance is crucial. Opt for eco-friendly tours and accommodations that support conservation efforts and respect local communities. Your visit can contribute to the protection and sustainable development of this vital region.
A trip to the Amazon Rainforest promises adventure, awe, and a deeper appreciation for one of our planet’s most critical ecosystems. Whether you’re navigating the waterways, trekking through the dense jungle, or learning from the indigenous people, the Amazon is a destination that offers unforgettable experiences and insights.

Receiving the 1st of two AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine shots within 15 hours of arriving at Bogotá International Airport.
Bogotá, Colombia 16 October 2021
After 10 years of traveling and photographing the world — and the last dreadful 19 months of enduring COVID-limbo in Europe — I have decided to cease my traveling and make my home in Colombia.
It was a good run.  But all things must pass as George Harrison reminded us.
Thank you for your support during this past decade.

Heyy ^^ i found ur blog yesterday and ive been ADDICTED to ur BFF!Bill stories!! they're so so good! I was wondering if you could write something about them both being on a plane, and when turbulence starts to happen tiger is just freaking out and bill has to calm and comfort her. omg that would be so adorable. also maybe them being cute at the airport before the flight, because tiger is all sleepy and soft. as you can tell, i've been desperate for some fluff hahah xx
HELLO NEW FRENN.
First of all, welcome bubs. Welcome welcome welcome to my crazy little corner of the interweb universe, I’m so happy that you stopped by and I’m so happy that you enjoy my insane babbles! do you have a favourite? I love hearing about your favourites.
Second of all, it’s strange to me that the people who are only starting to follow me now--ya’ll know a really special side of me. You know a weird, out of normal side of me. Because my job--I don’t talk about it--but normally, my job is 90% travel. Before this zombie virus hit, for years I was away for about 250-300 days a year. In 2019, I visited LA, Egypt, Iceland, London, Paris, Stockholm, Hong Kong, Japan, Cyprus, Ghana, Colombia, Phuket, Qatar, Milan, Bali, Stockholm, Abu Dhabi, Denmark, Norway--and that’s just to name a few. I was never home. I lived my life at 35,000 feet, in hotel rooms, never quite sure what continent I was on or what time zone I was in--and I loved it. That was the life for me.
And then 2020 hit and I just haven’t been the same since. In fact--because I think it’s important to talk about these things--this has hit me really hard lately, this nostalgia, this longing. And the main topic of my therapy sessions these days has been allowing myself to grieve for a life that I loved, that I may never get back. It’s rough, it’s really intense, and therapy has left me totally drained lately.
I have a few airport-comfort pieces on my #vacation bill tag on my Masterlist, because it meant so much to me at one point in my life. Don’t get me wrong, I was always treated very well when I flew and I had a lot of perks--but sometimes, sometimes it was hard too. When I was on malaria pills and only a few weeks out of a yellow fever vaccine, suffering from an insanely sensitive stomach in Ghana? I was curled up at the airport as my boss slowly gave me carbonated water, and I wanted to die. Curling up and just wanting to pass out on my 5th flight that was trying to get me to Vietnam, when I had no idea what day or what time it was, and all I wanted was to sleep--knowing that when I landed, I had 28 working hours ahead of me. That trip was hard. It was a lot of planes rides for short periods--so right as I started to drift off my seat would be slammed back into upright position, we were landing, and I had to shuffle out and shuffle onto another plane.
In any case, please let me indulge a moment in this because I am always here for Bill comforting tiger in all scenarios.
Bill flies a lot, so he’s used to all of it. He knows airports are chilly, and airplanes are often even more chilly. He knows that tiger errs on the side of cold always anyway, so he packs a few extra sweaters just because he knows that like...she doesn’t. She doesn’t think of it. And make no mistake, the extra sweaters are for him--because he always gives her the sweater off his back. She’s more comforted that way, it’s warm and it smells like him and she always huddles into it.
And it’s not that travelling stresses tiger out--she quite enjoys it actually--but it’s all just so thrilling, that sometimes she has a hard time focusing. Bill is a high roller, man he has access to all the lounges and always either flies business class, or is ballin’ enough to be bumped to business class just when the airline agents see how many points he has. And tiger is just taking it all in--the wine in the lounge, the fanciness of it all, the prestige. She’s all up in ends and Bill has to help kind of ground her--just be that steady presence that keeps her in check, tells her to eat. He fixes a plate for her always, because tiger is like a kid in a candy store and there’s just so much to be amazed about. He thinks it’s adorable, god she makes his heart skip a few beats, but he knows she’s also looking for a bit of stability, some anchor that she can hold onto amidst all the excitement--and that’s what he is.
They, obviously, always sit together on the plane. She always gets lots of head scritchies to help her relax and fall asleep. And listen, if turbulence should hit? He’s all over it. I, low key, really love turbulence--man that shit will just rock you right to sleep. I’ve been on a few flights where I have legitimately been scared--I’ve been on flights where an engine blew out after take off and we had to emergency land, or a flight where the tail of the aircraft split clean in half about 3,000 ft above ground and we had a crash landing, I’ve been on flights where the back wheels hit the runway and then the pilot had to take off again at almost a 90 degree angle because an aircraft was too close in front of him and I’ve nearly passed out from the G force. And actually the flight to Bali from Qatar was very turbulent--but I’ve mostly been able to retain my calm. No plane in history has ever been downed by turbulence alone.
Bill knows that. He’s used to it. But tiger? Tiger has all of her claws dug into his forearm the minute the plane starts to shake even just slightly. It rouses him from a deep sleep--his goofy eye mask on and all--and he lifts it and squints at her. He’s a little grumpy, but the minute he sees the pure panic etched on her face, he morphs into caretaker mode immediately.
“It’s okay kid,” he says, “It’s just a rough patch.”
Sure enough, the seatbelt sign dings and the announcement from the captain comes on.
“Bill...” she says, and there’s a hint of a whine in her voice. He wishes he could just squeeze in close to her, just envelop her in his arms but the centre console between their seats separates them. He reaches his arm around her anyway, cranes so he can kiss her temple.
“We’re okay tiger,” he says into her ear, “Turbulence is normal. Nothing to worry about.”
She whines again, reaching a hand and she balls it into his t-shirt. He moves his hand to her hair, scritching lightly.
“Just breathe kid,” he says, “It’s okay.”
He can’t ding the flight attendant because they can’t move during turbulence anyway, so instead he reaches for his water bottle and uncaps it, offers it to her.
“Drink,” he instructs. She takes a small sip, but she tenses the minute the plane starts to rock again.
“We’re okay, I promise,” he says, “Turbulence isn’t dangerous kid. Not in the slightest.”
She looks unsure, everything about her is tense and worried.
“Hey,” he says and he taps her nose “You trust me?”
“Of course I trust you.”
“And you know how much I fly?”
“Yes.”
“It’s nothing kid,” he reassures, “Try and relax. Come here, I’ll rub your tummy.”
“I don’t need my--”
But listen, he manages to combine their blankets and creates a cocoon around the two of them. He reaches over and reclines her seat back a bit, boosts up the foot rest so she’s comfortable, and then under the blanket he lifts her shirt a little--and his warm hand just rubs back and forth, massages on her lower stomach just how she likes. He puts a pillow on the centre console, pulls the blanket up a little and pulls her over so she can lean across it--and then he rests his thumb on her lips.
“Billy--” she mumbles, but he hushes her.
“No one can see kid,” he kisses her nose softly, “I promise. Go on.”

trips to the amazon,
trips to the amazon,
The Amazon rainforest, often referred to as the "lungs of the Earth," is a treasure trove of biodiversity and a must-visit destination for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts alike. Spanning across nine countries in South America, with the majority located in Brazil, this vast and vibrant ecosystem offers a unique and unforgettable travel experience. Here’s a guide to help you make the most of your trip to the Amazon.
Choose Your Destination The Amazon is a sprawling region with various entry points. Popular starting points for Amazon trips include:
Manaus, Brazil: The gateway city to the Brazilian Amazon, Manaus offers a range of tours and lodges. It’s known for the meeting of the waters where the Rio Negro and Solimões Rivers converge without mixing.
Iquitos, Peru: Accessible only by plane or boat, Iquitos is the largest city in the world that can’t be reached by road. From here, you can explore the Peruvian Amazon and enjoy guided tours and jungle lodges.
Leticia, Colombia: Situated on the banks of the Amazon River, Leticia provides access to Colombia’s portion of the rainforest and offers a more off-the-beaten-path experience.
Plan Your Itinerary A typical Amazon trip might include:
Jungle Lodge Stays: Spend a few nights in a jungle lodge to immerse yourself in the rainforest. Many lodges offer guided tours, including wildlife spotting, canoeing, and night hikes.
River Cruises: Embark on a river cruise to explore the waterways and see the rainforest from a different perspective. Cruises vary from luxury to more basic options.
Wildlife Watching: The Amazon is home to diverse wildlife, including monkeys, sloths, and colorful birds. Take guided tours to maximize your chances of spotting these incredible creatures.
Indigenous Communities: Visit local indigenous communities to learn about their traditional ways of life and their deep connection to the rainforest.
Essential Packing List Lightweight Clothing: Breathable, quick-dry clothes are essential. Opt for long sleeves and pants to protect against insects and sun exposure.
Rain Gear: The Amazon is known for its frequent rain showers. Pack a waterproof jacket and durable, water-resistant gear.
Insect Repellent: Mosquitoes are prevalent, so bring a high-quality insect repellent and consider wearing insect-proof clothing.
Binoculars and Camera: For wildlife watching and capturing the stunning scenery, binoculars and a good camera with a zoom lens are must-haves.
Comfortable Footwear: Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots or shoes are important for navigating the muddy trails.
Health and Safety Tips Vaccinations: Check with your healthcare provider about recommended vaccinations for travel to the Amazon, such as yellow fever, typhoid, and hepatitis A and B.
Malaria Prevention: Malaria is a risk in many parts of the Amazon. Consult your doctor about anti-malarial medication and take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
Stay Hydrated and Protected: Drink plenty of water, use sunscreen, and avoid swimming in rivers unless advised by your guides.
Respect the Environment The Amazon is a fragile ecosystem. Be mindful of your impact by:
Following Guidelines: Adhere to local guidelines and instructions from your guides to minimize your impact on the environment.
Avoiding Littering: Dispose of trash properly and avoid leaving any waste behind.
Supporting Sustainable Tourism: Choose eco-friendly tours and lodges that prioritize conservation and benefit local communities.
Conclusion A trip to the Amazon rainforest is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure filled with breathtaking landscapes, incredible wildlife, and cultural richness. By choosing the right destinations, planning thoughtfully, and respecting the environment, you’ll ensure a memorable and responsible journey through one of the most extraordinary places on Earth. Guatape
Guatape is a cute little town roughly two hours from Medellin. Keep in mind, if you are traveling during major holidays or the first week of the new year that two-hour ride quickly becomes four hours. It’s a hot spot for people from Medellin to escape the big city for some much-needed lake life. Our ride was 4 hours and was dreadful but that’s beside the point.
Guatape was once farmland until Colombia flooded the area in the 1970s to create a dam. The government paid the local people of El Penol to leave their towns so the water can be released and a man-made lake formed. The lake is now a major hydroelectric source for the entire country of Colombia and some neighboring countries like Panama and Ecuador. The lake is the second largest lake in all of Colombia and brings in a lot of money to the country.
Aside from the lake being a major attraction for people, tourists also come to climb the Piedra del Peñol or take photos of the multicolored plazas filled with zócalos, painted panels adorning various buildings. The town of Guatape actually won some awards for being the “most colorful town in Colombia” and it certainly lives up to its award. The streets are brightly colored with beautiful designs up and down the buildings each telling a historical story of Colombia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This morning we woke up early to hike up El Piedra (the rock). It was a short tuk-tuk ride from our condo to get to the base of the rock. With a small entrance fee and a covid vaccination card, we were admitted to walk the 700 stairs up to the mirador or viewpoint. Pearce and I were steady walkers and only took a break a few times but man, people here were walking in skirts, dresses, jeans, heels, it’s like they have no sense of what they’re about to do. Then at the top, I am the one amazed they made it. People amaze me!! Anywho, the top of the rock was stunning!! It reminded me of Washington state seeing all the waterways and vibrating lush grass everywhere. It was beautiful and well worth the hike. I was also very very grateful we hiked so early because on the way down there was a long line to buy tickets and being stuck behind people taking photos every second and breaks to breathe would have been miserable AND the Medellin tour busses arrive at ten so I was glad to be up and down the rock by 9:30. It’s a must-do if you visit Guatape and one of the main attractions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later in the afternoon we decided to rent a powerboat for an hour and get a tour of the lake. It ended up being a private tour with just the two of us so that was very nice. Our driver took us to see three big-wig Narco homes. We saw the Ochoa brother’s home, the “Mexican”s home, and Pablo Escobar’s number one home, La Manuela. He had a bunch of houses around Medellin and Colombia but this was his main home. All three of the large homes overlooked the lake and are now owned by the government and in terrible condition. In 1993, La Manuela (named after his daughter) was bombed by Los Pepes, a vigilante group whose name stood for “Perseguidos por Pablo Escobar” (“People Persecuted by Pablo Escobar”). Allegedly funded by the rival Cali Cartel and other enemies of Escobar, Los Pepes stuffed 200kg of TNT into a bathroom at La Manuela, the detonation of which blew the house to bits. Unfortunately, the only people killed in these bombings were the people who maintain the home. Again, seeing these homes first hand after watching the show Narco’s and being to Medellin and hearing our tour guides was just sad. It’s crazy all this happened and happened so recently, it’s truly very devastating.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When our boat tour was over we walked around town to see the shops and artwork. The town is absolutely adorable and has so much flare. The shops are very cute as well and I like to check out all the nick-nacks. Guatape is a very interesting place and I’m glad we got to visit for a full day on our own instead of taking a day tour from Medellin. With a full day of travel ahead of us, we had a peaceful evening of work and relaxing.

WHERE CAN AMERICANS TRAVEL WITH VACCINE?
https://wherecanamericanstravelnow.com/where-can-americans-travel-with-vaccine/
For this year 2021, American passport holders have seen an ever changing list of international travel options as the globe adapted first to vaccines and then now to the Delta Variants of the covid 19 virus.
Where can Americans travel with vaccine? As of the end of September, the total number of U.S. cases is around the 42.3 million mark, since the first coronavirus case in the country. Some countries are overwhelmed by corona cases, as well as some American states.
It is up to you to decide whether if traveling internationally is a good idea. The health risks are evident if you have not received the full dose of the covid 19 vaccine. Your destination might change its rules at any time. You may be forced to follow strict rules and regulations put in place by the country to fight the virus- wearing masks, social distancing, sanitizing, and curfews. And violations could lead to heftier fines and even jail.
Where can Americans travel with vaccine? If you want some expert advice before finalizing your decision, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and US Department provides detailed, updated, and accurate covid 19 risk assessments by nation. Both sites rate most countries open to American travelers at level 4. Remember that all flying passengers age two and older must show proof of viral covid 19 negative results test taken three days before departure to enter the U.S.

Nations recently removed from the open list.
What follows are countries that have been allowing Americans to enter but have closed again or we have removed from the open list for some reasons:
Sweden: American travelers cannot enter Sweden directly but can go via another European country.
Bulgaria: current rules set by the governments’ nation make direct visits difficult.
Ethiopia: This cultural country remains in the removed nations because of the ongoing warfare.
Cambodia: The U.S. embassy reports that the Southeast Asian nation has stopped issuing tourist visas. You can visit the country for business or apply for business linked business.

I am a British expat living in Colombia and there’s no reason for it to be on the red list. Grant Shapps has taken countries with more cases and less vaccinated people off because they’re seen as popular winter locations.
Colombia needs to come off the red list!
I want to be able to get back to the UK easily to see my family and friends after so long!
Please sign! ❤️
It’s my birthday today so a little gift to me would be to sign this petition ❤️

A world of possibilities
At home, my boyfriend (X) always buys on Amazon travel guides of remote places would like to go to at some point. Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, the borders of almost every country were closed but the books kept coming home during the pandemic.
Now we literally had a pile of possibilities, and we needed to consider where we would like to spend the next couple of months. The two-month leave that I had to take at work this year is something that it might not happen ever again. After two visits to the United States to get the Pfizer vaccine, our prospects had tripled. Many countries have set as a requirement to be vaccinated to allow visitors to enter.
Now we did not have Costa Rica or Colombia as our only options; we could also go to Iceland or —our goal from the beginning— any country in Europe. The Summer season in the Northern hemisphere had just started and we couldn’t wait to get some sun and relax for little a bit, after one and a half years of stress at work and an avalanche of fake news on social media.
To be honest, all other potential destinations were eclipsed now the old continent was actually a possibility. Although, the requirements for travelling to travel were changing constantly —depending on the country— and the local airlines kept postponing the date to resume their regular flights to Europe. Ten days before the date we wanted to depart, we finally got something clear: the only option we really had was Spain and maybe France, the other European countries weren’t open to outside tourism.
Spain was not our first option —we were thinking more in Italy—, but we’ve always had a good time when passing through Barcelona or Madrid at the beginning or the end of a longer trip. Also, we have a lot of friends in both cities. X spoke with an Irish friend that had been living in Barcelona for a year, to ask him how was everything with the pandemic and all that, and out of the blue he offered us his apartment to stay. He had to return to Dublin for work.
These unexpected circumstances made our decision process lot easier that had it to be. Everything was starting to fall into place, like the pieces of a very complex puzzle that was finally taking shape in our heads. Destiny had placed Spain on our path and we welcomed it with open arms. What awaited us there?
