So most of you will probably say “Javelinas are nasty!” But, have you tried them? Or even better… have you prepared them properly? Back home we call them Baquiros and we love to hunt them and eat them! #baquiro #collaredpeccary #bowhunting #hunttoeat (at Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRurgfclVCb/?utm_medium=tumblr

It seems that the collared peccary (Pecari tajacu) didn’t really like the giant armadillo burrow 🙃 🇺🇸 The collared peccaries are important in maintaining ecosystems as predators and seed dispersers. In the Pantanal, they are mainly frugivores, and on the rainy season fruits make up to almost 50% of their diet and during the dry season vegetable fibers and roots take on a greater importance. They can be associated with coatis (Nasua nasua) and howler monkeys (Alouatta caraya) during foraging, consuming the fruits of palm trees felled by them. Last week's #MysteryCreature was the #CollaredPeccary (Pecar tajacu). The #peccary (or #javelina) is a #NewWorld pig found throughout South and Central Americas as well as in #Mexico and the southwestern #UnitedStates. Native to the Americas, peccaries can be found in all kinds of habitats from arid scrublands to humid tropical rain forests. The collared peccary has adapted well to habitat disturbed by humans and can be found in cities and agricultural land throughout their range. In the U.S. there are well-established populations in the suburbs of #Tucson and #Phoenix, #Arizona. Adult peccaries average between about 3.0 and 4.0 feet (90 to 130 cm) and can weigh in at 45 to 85 pounds (that's 20 to 40 kg). Peccaries have a number of superficial scent glands and emit a very strong odor which has earned them the moniker "#SkunkPigs." Collared peccaries diet on roots, grasses, seeds, fruit, and prickly-pear cacti. However, they are #omnivores and will eat insects, grubs, and even small mammals on occasion. P. tajaca will bear young year-round. Average litter size is two or three piglets.

Collared Peccary (Pecari tajacu) or Javelina as its often called is a medium sized mammal that is similar looking to the wild boar. Identifiable by their massive heads, short legs and white collar... the most distinguishable difference from other wild pig type creatures. Active at dawn and dusk they tend to avoid humans but if cornered can be incredibly dangerous... armed with speed, dense muscle and razor sharp tusks! Plentiful in the southwestern parts of Arizona this is one member of the suborder Suina you don't want to encounter in a dark alley!
