colin should 'suffer' for penelope

aka: 5 short reasons why wanting colin to 'suffer' or 'grovel' or whatever other bullshit this fandom keeps pulling is stupid and makes no sense and should have been buried ages ago, how is this still a thing?

1: it sets a terrible and unhealthy dynamic between an endgame couple

especially considering Polin's motif is that of a mirror, if Colin is expected to grovel or suffer for Penelope's affection and forgiveness, it only stands to reason that Penelope then, too, would have to reciprocate. how Penelope treats Colin's ills is setting the precedent for how he's expected to handle her own against him, of which there are many. giving him the cold shoulder, holding what he said over his head and rubbing it in his face, potentially not even explaining why she's upset at him: these are not signs of a mature woman ready for a marriage to ANYONE

2: Colin's slights against Penelope are considerably less harmful than Penelope's against Colin's and it makes no narrative sense for her to be on her high horse about it

'he ruined her prospects' 'he talked about her behind her back' 'he laughed at her' (we don't even know if that one's true, frankly speaking)

but Penelope did the exact same to him and she did so first. Please remember that Penelope is the reason Colin and Marina broke up, and it was her express goal the entire time. Penelope humiliated Colin and Marina both by exposing them publicly (not to mention rubbed the salt into the wound for days afterward). Penelope didn't even think about Colin's feelings because she tried to confess her crush on him immediately after his engagement went poof. Penelope holding Colin accountable for what he said without herself recognizing the ways in which she's hurt him, too, makes her out to be a hella hypocrite

3: it's weirdly catholic on main?

love isn't about suffering points or penance or guilt and i'm tired of Christianity pervading every damn thing. sorry not sorry, some of us want an actually fulfilling love story

4: y'all are just mad Colin didn't love Penelope back from jump and it's a revenge fantasy

which, fine, that's what fanfic is for, but it's OOC, y'all are aware of that, right? because if he DID want her from the start, we all know that it wouldn't be Polin? why are you shipping a friends to lovers ship if you INSIST that the friends to lovers dynamic is less than? guess what? unreciprocated love is kind of part of the deal. you don't hold a grudge against your friend for not loving you back immediately. Colin shows he cares about Penelope in SO MANY WAYS that somehow are completely invalidated because it isn't meant to be romantic? imma say it: fuck you if you think that way. friendships are important and beautiful and deep and fulfilling with or without romance. Colin sticking his neck out for Penelope to help her family from Jack's scheme? an act of love. Colin sending Penelope letters after her father passed? act of love. Colin telling Penelope she's 'really very good' and holding her hand in appreciation of her coming to talk to him? act of love. if you think those acts of love mean nothing just because he isn't fucking her seven ways to sunday, maybe analyze your own viewpoint of relationships and ship Pen w/ some random stranger who makes heart eyes at her tits from jump

5: it makes Penelope an asshole to her own long term partner

dude, if a friend of mine insisted I crawl on hands and knees to determine whether they want me back in their lives, i don't want to be around that person? so many of these narratives make Penelope a straight up terrible person. if you want your partner to suffer? you probably don't actually like them very much, but Polin is narratively MEANT to be the couple that likes AND loves one another. be real, if your friend ghosted you for months, gave you the cold shoulder when you tried to talk again, treated you like shit (you can't argue that him 'suffering' isn't treating him like shit in some way shape or form) as you tried to apologize, and then you find out that she was the reason you and your ex broke up and she wrote straight up nasty things about your family for YEARS, you would want absolutely nothing to do with that friend. why should Colin be expected to be any different? do these two not deserve a lovely love story built on love and affection and trust and honesty? a healthy happy relationship in which they see one another and appreciate one another for all they are? no? so why do you ship them?

I can see it. It's also kinda funny because from certain stand points Colin and Michael are similar to each other as are Penelope and Francesca.

🎨 He went on a gap year before college to travel the world. He went kinda everywhere but he’s not one of those people that’s pretentious and has to talk about it all the time (no shade Colin, he’s more of an excited puppy about where he’s been anyway)

🎨 During cov!d he really honed in on his skills as an artist but also got really into skincare and hair care. Now he does a whole curly hair care routine because even though I can see him keeping his hair on the shorter side, he still likes it to have a little body.

SO YEAH

I'm struggling to find words so lets just get right into it. Ep5 itself was wow. and did they have to end every episode on basically a cliffhanger (i loved the tension, delicious).

It was. steamy. that scene with the yk mirror and the sofa and they talking and giggling.

'The firmness of your lips parted just so.. and then there are other parts I've been.. dreaming about' - Colin Bridgeron (a total fucking simp)

and then the cut to Anthony and Kate to Franchesca totally infodumping on this dude in the cutest fucking way <3<3<3

not to mention Benerdicts whole entire arc of s1 bicoded to s2 cishet to s3 bi-poly vibes in a very slay girlypop way and I genuinly think the show in this season has managed to do queer representation correctly and I'm just so happy about that.

Also I'm all over the place rn cuz I just finished watching but like for people who know book stuff. I was NOT expecting that for Francesca WOW YES (did anyone else notice the mirroring between that meeting and the one her mother had with her father?).

Also in the final ball the way Pen's dress looks green and then looks blue when she gets on the stage is !!!!! so yes wow pretty yes.

Did anyone else notice the way Violet fixated on the guys mouth when he was eating. The Bridgerton's really do all be like that. I appreciate the attention to detail from the showmakers there wow.

On the note of Francesca's upcoming arc. I somehow expected El and Ben to be it. But there are NO complaints from my end about this development.

Also Pen and her mother and that entire dynamic was a Moment and a half and I could try and write essays on it when I'm more awake.

Yk what lets talk Cressida. And her evil to good to sad evil arc she had going on. Because wow she has me feeling so many emotions both for and against her. Did they really end her arc the way they did were her being shipped off with evil aunt because I really was hoping she would either get away or marry debling (who seems to have vansihed) and that really sad. Like the blackmail was so wrong of her and I do think Pen may have just helped her if she had asked in a nice person way but she was desparate and alone and young and like she knew her actions were bad, but she was trying to save herself from worse and that sucks. She is giving August from YR but less intense and more tragic. I do wish she had a better outcome but also penance? Idk unsatifying end.

Tilly. Wow. She is kinda awesome and like. yeah. slay.

Danbury as always just ate. She walked in and slayed the floor down. I did like that little reference to the spin off Queen Charlotte they did there with the scene with Violet refering to the paper crowns and friendship. That felt like cracking a knuckle.

Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. I have committed the most grievous of sins and have judged a book by its cover, more accurately judged a story by its special edition release.

Perhaps I am partially to blame. I had high expectations for this book and the Netflix series lulled me into a false sense of security. But when I came across Once Upon A Book, (a really interesting book subscription service that not only sends you a new book, but marks certain pages and wraps little gifts for you to open as you read). They posted about their new collaboration with Julia Quinn and the special edition of the Bridgerton series was breathtakingly beautiful, and I had to have it. However, the universe had other plans for me, or should I say Brexit. After setting multiple alarms and calculating the time difference and stopping everything to make sure I was free when this copy was released, only for them to not ship to the UK. I worked so hard to get my hand on his edition. It had a holiday in rural Spain, suffering slight damages in transit, but I was still excited to crack it open and become immersed in a sexy, rich fantasy. However, I found it lackluster. The characters are barely two dimensional. The show made me fall in love with the Bridgerton siblings but they rarely appear and when they do; they are flat and rude *cough cough* (Colin sucks). Perhaps this will change in the corresponding sibling novels, but I am not invested enough to read the rest. My petty review, and the one thing I cannot overlook is, near the end of my copy, Julia decides to use the word ‘fanny’ for Hastings falling on his butt. After reading the English rich people fantasy, it jarred me from the narrative and I feel like everyone who writes about the intricacies of English society should know that fanny means something completely different here. In my opinion, this is one of the times where the TV adaptation is much better than the original, and if like me you are a fan of the show, I would keep it to that.

if the end of episode 4 / part 1 of season 3 isn't the lady whistledown reveal and colin's blowup/meltdown about it. . .what are we even doing here? i saw someone go 'ooooh what if debling proposes and penelope says yes and that's the cliffhanger?'

my sister in christ, that literally holds ZERO weight and tension in polin's story. debling is an afterthought. a nothingburger to create extra drama. he is literally disposable as a character because we KNOW penelope and colin are endgame. that relationship will fall apart and the how of it. . .doesn't matter.

but lady whistledown? lady whistledown is the guillotine of their relationship and it has been hanging above their heads on a fraying string for YEARS now. it affects EVERYTHING that comes after. she is penelope's mask that has to be peeled off. she will flay colin's gentlemanly exterior clean to the bone.

just like. . .idk, think about the narrative structure for a second. it's being framed as a romcom, right? what does every romcom need?

a meetcute, a growing closeness, some external drama, a big relationship stresser / test, an *oh* moment, a reconciliation, a happy ending

debling is the external drama, not the stresser. debling cannot threaten polin's ship as endgame, or polin in general, because he literally does. not. matter. he was created by shonda to drive home the point that penelope is now post-glow-up (which also doesn't matter, because their relationship (debling and pen's) goes against the very heart of bridgerton as a concept, which is to fall in love in unconventional ways. oh how did the two of you meet? at a ball? dancing together? HOW riveting (not)), he is not meant to be the stress or fracture in polin as a pairing

meetcute? flashback of polin as kids growing closeness? the lessons, reveals he's a writer, the kiss external drama? she's dancing with other peeps big relationship stressor? LADY WHISTLEDOWN *oh* moment? AFTER LADY WHISTLEDOWN REVEAL. when he sees who Penelope is as a FULL person and falls for her anyway reconciliation? AFTER LADY WHISTLEDOWN REVEAL!! at their engagement ball when she publishes about Cressida not being LW even though she said she'd stop and he realizes he loves her even if she's upset him, the same way Penelope realizes *she* loves *him* even if he's upset her happy ending? you guessed it. AFTER. THE. LADY. WHISTLEDOWN. REVEAL (and honestly, probably the death of Lady Whistledown. because it depresses me to think that Penelope's ultimate happy ending is to continue writing petty gossip for the rest of her days when she could be fucking her hot husband on various beautiful beaches around the world and they write novels together)

lady whistledown is. the unearthing of her as another side of penelope. the secret cracking open, colin's facade fulling fading, his fury and humanity made tangible, penelope's nuance, her strengths and weaknesses and fears and hopes now barefaced. the harms she committed, the triumphs she accomplished. the strain it has on them as a pairing, the dynamic shift it introduces

i will eat my SHOES if part 1 doesn't end on the lady whistledown reveal because if it doesn't. . .what are we even doing here?

You know I think this is Penelope's most popular ship outside of the Bridgertons. I can see why it's popular too, Michael is the most similar to Colin and they both have the whole pinning for someone who they believe is never gonna love them thing going on.

It was something neither Penelope nor Colin realised to consider. Colin could have, given Penelope told him about her alter ego during their engagement. Eloise wouldn’t have allowed the marriage to proceed otherwise.

Colin was slow to wrap his head around it, but he didn’t see another choice. This was still the same Penelope he fell in love with, and no part of him could stomach existing without being able to freely love her.

They got married, went on a honeymoon to Paris, and that was how the problem started. Lady Whistledown stopped writing, suddenly, in the middle of the social season, and it coincided with Colin and Penelope’s wedding then honeymoon.

Eloise and Madame Delacroix were still the only others who knew, and Eloise briefly considered giving it a go and trying to write for her friend. [Where exactly they stood remained complicated, but they were also family now.] Delacroix took one look at Eloise’s writing and said that, despite its reasonable quality, it was not able to pass as Lady Whistledown.

The mid season absence might have been okay, able to be glossed over, but that was until Lady Whistledown published again—two days after the newlywed’s return from Paris.

Gossip, the ton’s greatest fuel source, was copious. Anthony was absolutely livid, probably moments from bursting a blood vessel. Colin couldn’t work out if Anthony was more enraged about the fact his younger brother married the most prolific gossip columnist, or that a one month honeymoon unravelled the entire thing. Kate told him to relax, somewhat helpfully pointing out that what’s done is done.

Even if the Bridgerton’s came around, convinced largely by Kate and Eloise, and the Featherington’s reluctantly accepted the matter, the ton didn’t need it to be confirmed for their attitude to sour.

Lady Danbury was the catalyst for change. She quietly told Penelope of her admiration, though would of course deny it if ever asked. Still a member of The Queen’s court, she used such privilege to protect Penelope and Colin. She told them they had to leave now. The Queen was going to send for them the following morning, and it would not be a friendly conversation.

It was late in the evening, the sun well and truly set, when they stared at the ship in the docks. Violet, Anthony, Kate, Benedict, Eloise and Portia had come to wish them a solemn bon voyage.

“Must you travel so far?” Anthony asked gruffly.

“New South Wales will make a nice home. I hear it is always sunny,” Colin replied, set in his decision. They didn’t have a lot of choices, and one eight months away by boat seemed a safe one.

On the tail end of her goodbyes, Penelope hugged Eloise tightly. “I know I did not make our friendship easy, but I will miss you greatly.”

“Nor did I,” Eloise snorted, “and I will miss your company immensely. It will be slow, but we must write. I will get my own personal Lady Whistledown, for a ton on the other side of the world.”

“Of course,” Penelope giggled, “I have written a goodbye. In one week, when we are safely on our journey, you must give it to Madame Delacroix.”

“Pen—“

“You must.”

Penelope insisted, and pushed a folded wad of papers into her best friend’s hand. Colin took his wife’s hand as the farewells begun to waver, the two of them traipsing onto the ship forlornly. Also no one else realises how insane a Bowral premiere was???? Like there are lots of pretty places in places bigger than a town with only 10k people we were literally colonised during the Georgian/regency period??? Idk I still haven’t recovered from Netflix trekking a pile of media, influencers and then two huge actors to BOWRAL of all places 😭 what was that thought process

Cassian & Anthony (8/10) they’d want to burn each other alive but in the sexiest way. Could either go very right or very wrong. There’s no in between for these two.

Eloise & Nesta (9/10) again, this would either go very wrong or very right but I would pay to see this. Amazing. Eloise would probably drop dead seeing Nesta for the first time at a ball, preferably dancing with Eris.

Rhys & Azriel (1/10) one point is for decoration. Any bat boy combo makes me uncomfortable af. Idk. Not my tea.
