Okay but seriously. Yes, these books are hardly the "highest quality" literature out there, and pretending like they are is kinda silly. But these books have created so many new readers, primarily women ages 15-30. People are reading less and becoming worse at it, and any reading is better than no reading!
These books serve as an excellent gateway into reading more for that previously untapped audience, and they've filled a niche that wasn't filled before. I've never seen so much YA fantasy for sale front and center, and especially not fantasy aimed towards women with female protagonists since I started working in a book store years ago.
And of course we collect these books together! We have people who want to buy these books! And many of them primarily know them through booktok, and that's simply an easy way for us to market them so people can find them.
They've also created a big market in English books! I'm Swedish, and while many of these titles get translated we've started selling many more English books!
Also, there's plenty of "regular" published books that are on the same level as wattpad fiction. I refuse to let people shit on these books when they're primarily enjoyed by young women. Aren't we over shifting on those interests by now? Grow up, please.

@itsallwearecalledtodo tagged me to post the last, current, and next books on my reading list. Thanks, Laurel!
Last: As Sokka would say, the journey was long and annoying, but I finally finished R.F. Kuang's Babel just last night. I genuinely wish I had more nice things to say about this book than I do, because it deals with important issues--colonialism; world systems and trade as a weapon of control; genteel academia as an aestheticization of most elite universities' distinctly exploitative histories--and is by an author who has generally good instincts on those issues. Unfortunately, it's a didactic, hectoring screed that's at its best when it's least like a novel and most like an academic monograph; you can practically taste the bile in Kuang's mouth as she strains against the necessities of writing this as a fantasy novel when she clearly wants it to just be her dissertation instead. There's a very specific audience that I can see really loving this book--left-wing, moralistic, white or white-adjacent, open to being dressed down, harboring mixed feelings about past or present Anglophilia--but the thing is, that describes me and I still didn't respond very well to it, so I'm sort of at a loss as to why it's become as popular and well-regarded as it has. @rebeccadumaurier, who's read it as well, was an invaluable frustrated-tirade partner as I trudged through it. Thanks, Ange!
Current: I'm rereading The Makioka Sisters, a longtime favorite that I'm really savoring this time, in part because I'm reading it out loud back and forth with my flatmate and it's been hard to make time for it.
Next: I have several options! I'm leaning towards Nightmare Alley by William Lindsay Gresham (the source material for the Guillermo Del Toro movie, as well as an earlier film noir with Tyrone Power and Coleen "One L" Gray), Konbini ningen by Murata Sayaka (translated as Convenience Store Woman, but the second word in the Japanese title means "human," not "woman"; I've bought a Japanese copy, taken out an English copy from the library, and will be engaging in my own personal Babel re: politics of translation as I investigate just how badly this one got Girl Book Ghettoized), or The Driver's Seat by Muriel Spark (another library book and one that @maryblackwood has spoken highly of in the past; I've read other Spark novels and loved them).
Tagging @rebeccadumaurier and @maryblackwood because I already mentioned them in this post. Also @staghunters, @marzipanandminutiae, @lilaccatholic, @wedding-shemp, @carys-the-ninth, @tar-miriel, @mongrelmutt, and @clarascuro.

I haven't seen a single person like Fourth Wing and yet booktubers keep reading it in order to say they didn't like it... apparently, it has a high rating on goodreads but I think liking that book is a myth at this point and it's starting to feel like people that read Maas and Coleen Hoover just to hate on the books.

The Highwayman Comes Riding
Tumblr media
Iron Fist [Marvel Comics Presents #137]
Awful art; dreadful dialogue.
"Make sure he can't take the Cogmium Steel."
The first two panels are incomprehensible. I've stared at them and stared at them but I have no real idea what they depict. I also have no idea who the woman is that gets shot, as she's never given a name. (it could be Coleen Wing, maybe?)
After that chaotic start, we get a running battle between Danny and a tech-stealing villain in highwayman garb. It's not always clear what is happening, and the dialogue is terrible. "Heard of rapier wit? This is wit-like rapier!"
Joey Cavalieri is another Marvel editor who seems incapable of writing a coherent story to save his life. Yet, in the 1990s he was inexplicably busy as a scripter. This is his final IRON FIST credit, however. Whoever comes next has got to be better. (Checks notes. Uh-oh.)

I don't think people understand just how important booktok is to the publishing industry.
Books like ACOTAR, fourth wing, twisted love, icebreaker, etc bring so much money to the publishing industry its actually absurd. Because of that money the industry has the chance to risk publishing a wildly variety of books. Yes the debut novel you love so much about the beauty of womanhood was only allowed to be published because "booktok" books pumped money into the publishing houses.
And imo if someone is reading thats positive, are they reading coleen hover ?? doesn't matter because they are grabbing a book and reading !! just like many of us started with Harry Potter many people now are starting with these "blockbuster" books. And if they cultivate the habit of reading naturally they'll start branching out and reading more genres. the important thing here is that people are reading !!
Also tiktok is an algorithm, if you don't like the books being recomended to you i advise you to watch different creators who enjoy the same genres as you. My fy page almost doesn't recommend me tiktok books because i've curated it to the content i enjoy to read.
So yeah booktok is important, but its also your job to actively chose what you are reading.
Media literacy is another post of its own but I don't think tiktok is the sole problem. Lets just say that if schools (and parents) did their job we wouldn't be in this situation.
Multiple truths can exist at once;
BookTok getting people into reading is good; BookTok is not single-handedly responsible for why people struggle with literacy in the internet age.
BookTok *sometimes* gives indie, self-pub, and lesser-known authors a needed boost.
BookTok turning books into an easy, breezy commodity and frequently promoting a limited number of books based on aesthetics and surface-level premises alone is concerning.
A lot of people are coming away from BookTok recs disappointed by the shallowness of some of the stories they are being rec’d.
A lot of critiques of BookTok are just as shallow (“tropes are bad! mentioning rep is queerbaiting! if I don’t like it then I compare it to fanfiction! give me a full-length summary in every mention of the book or I will assume there is no plot!”)
People often use critique of BookTok shallowness as an excuse to harass small authors (who sometimes aren’t even on BookTok?) for trying to promote or discuss their books at all.
People can and should seek out alternate book rec venues to BookTok, especially if BookTok disappoints them.

Dude, I thought you were done talking to me. But if you wanna continue, why not.
How can you still continue to say that he only brings facts and evidence when this tweet of his clearly showcases bias towards trans people? All the pic contains is 'protect trans kids' with the flag, no surgery or child mutilation shown, just a flag with a phrase that's not even the centre of attention since it's in the background. So if TBYS problem with trans people is letting kids access to surgery then why does this tweet exist? Did he just take the information from the article without any fact-checking? That's pretty odd for someone who supposedly 'brings the true facts and evidence.'
Plus you still never address why he specifically equates trans people with child predators, a popular transphobic stereotype used to discriminate trans people while also damaging trans kids. If he doesn't hate trans people, then why call them child predators? Something actually harmful and dangerous to society? Truly, tell me.
Something also to note of is that the videos you listed to me are older than the tweet. Those videos were from 2021, two years before this tweet which was in 2023. And if you take a look at the content of his channel, you can see the progression from anti feminist to anti woke content and with anti woke typically being against trans people (or anything LGBT really) then it wouldn't be surprising that even if he previously stated that he doesn't hate trans people or condone the hate towards them, that stance could've changed overtime within who he associates himself with.
I never talked to you about being sensitive. Anyone else who read the replies to our argument would also see that. Seriously, you have a pattern of just making stuff up. Similar to TBYS I guess.
Y'know it's funny because I actually did do what your suggesting me to do a few years ago where I offer him criticism and did so in a constructive way. Yet how did that go? Well when I asked him of his thoughts on one of his community posts, his response was notably filled with making stuff up about me. The most prominent one that I remember was his first critique of my critique, where he said I didn't offer advice like I 'promised.' I never promised him anything, I was very clear in just offering him criticism, not advice. Yet that was what he said. I have all of the screenshots of the conversation and it's not deleted so you can still find it if your curious.
The example your bringing up (that being of Coleen) it's a case of a groomer and victim. That's entirely different from right wing YouTuber got done wrong by bigger animated channel. TBYS and Illy are a case where both are shit in different ways (and when I include TBYS, it's not to Illy specifically but his content in general) Adam and Coleen on the other hand is where a predator uses their power to punish their victim for revealing them being a perpetrator. Your doing an argumentative technique I used to do a lot when younger but stop doing so much of because I realised that some situations aren't as comparable for an argument since it would contain a difference that wouldn't make the comparison work anymore (like the argument of why straight people can't have their pride parade despite them not having any discrimination for being straight since day 1 of earth)
Your experiences are pretty different from mine (as another asexual whose also an aromantic mixed Latina) I watched a lot of content of varying backgrounds which included right leaning content such as comps making fun of feminist cringe or the red pill. It didn't matter whether or not I even agreed with it, I just watched it for the sake of it (especially red pill) Now that I'm older, I tend to take what I watch with a grain of salt, not trusting right leaning content anymore and find it a waste of time. You can say it's a bad thing because I'm not 'opening my mind' but here's the thing: if you already find the persons videos bullshit, why still watch them? We control what we watch online so why not watch things your actually interested in? I do admit that I am bias and lean more towards the left side of the political spectrum but mostly because of the social aspect. I believe in letting people do whatever they want as long as their not harming anyone and given how right wing people voice their hatred over people such as trans people, I would ask: 'why do you care? How is it affecting you that these people are just living their lives?' I'd like to have an open mind and listen to other people's opinions on things, even if I disagree but what I draw the line is bigotry. That's not just your opinion, it's a whole group of people who are shown to be harmed by that opinion. And this is something tbys is doing with that very tweet, Futher contributing to the notion of trans people being child predators that causes so much harm towards them, especially with the rise of transphobia in the 2020s.
While its nice to see you think the shades of grey than just black n white (because as humans, were never simple so nuance is essential for us to consider), unfortunately, the red pill isn't exactly a good source. It is heavily biased against women (which is something tbys does clearly by being in the red pill community) and does deceive people, particularly young boys into harmful, misogynistic rhetoric about women. The most infamous example is Andrew tate. TBYS isn't someone who takes things neutrally and I'm shocked that few people see that given his clear red pill content where it's full of bias with little factual evidence and even sometimes made up. Along side the tweet that should tell you his personal bias of trans people. If you want to look at the shades of grey, maybe study someone like idk, Riefenstahl, and form your own conclusions instead of the red pill or TBYS.
And for some reason, your now gonna make our yapful conversation more well known here so, for anyone reading this post, you can find our conversation through this person's replies to their post which got 100+ notes. Read it and form your own conclusions, always remember to take someone's claims on the internet with a grain of salt and fact check.
You still trying to reach out to me despite this post having nothing to do with you (but TBYS fans/defenders in general because yours just so happen to be a common defense I seen multiple times) is a choice to say the least. Idk how to even feel about it.
Tumblr media
Are people really defending this run-of-the-mill anti-woke YouTuber just because Illymation wanted him reported for his reaction video to ‘Perks of Being the Fat Kid’??

So I’m only 9 episodes into Iron Fist S2 but this season has been so much better. Danny is much more bearable, Misty lights up every scene she’s in, especially when she’s with Coleen. In fact all the women have been incredible, Coleen is completely the heart of the show, Mary is such a complex, intreaguing character, and Joy, despite her many mistakes, is trying her best to do what’s right. I’m even rooting for Ward to pull his shit together. I’d love a cameo from one of the other defenders but won’t be too disappointed if it doesn’t happen. Really hoping they manage to land the ending and redeem this show
