Unsolved Cold Cases: Shocking Historical Crimes
In today’s episode we look at 2 shocking historical crimes of their day – one which remains unsolved and the other which becomes resolved 41 years later. In 1843, Harriet Monckton, a pious and steady young lady of 23, is found dead in the church privy.  Her body is saturated with prussic acid – more than 30 times the amount needed to kill - but there is no vial found near her, thereby ruling out possible suicide. In 1919, attractive newly married 25 year old Mamie Stuart lives in a secluded cottage in Wales with her increasingly erratic husband.  Mamie tells their landlady her thoughts of leaving to go to see her family.  Mamie then simply vanishes.  Her violently tempered husband is found to be now residing with his first wife.  With no body, no charges can be brought against anyone.  But, 41 years later her body is found! These two unsolved cold cases are today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.
Hosted by Robin Coles.

Jennifer Odom: The Beginning Of The End.
ON A CHILLY afternoon in rural Florida, a young girl steps off of her school bus & begins the walk home. She would only get a few yards before vanishing…THE STORY IS eerily familiar BUT it’s NOT about Jennifer Odom. This story takes place a full year before the world would hear about Jenny. This IS the horrific story of 17-year-old Carolyn Murray of Springhill, Florida. A CREATURE OF HABIT SHE…

Joseph Hedley “Joe the Quilter”
This is my first of many blog posts to come regarding unsolved crime cases here in the United Kingdom and hopefully later worldwide unsolved crime cases. This one is about the local Northumberland quilter, known worldwide by his nickname of Joe the Quilter. Joseph Hedley was found brutally murdered in his own home some days after his wife passing away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Known for his double-quilting patterns, Joe was a pioneer of quilting and stitching, known for his patterns here in the United Kingdom and in the United States of America as well.
Tumblr media
Not long after his passing, his stuff from his home were sold at an auction house in Hexham, Northumberland, UK, and the traces of a potential murderer go amidst. Since then, the case is regarded as a cold case, at least until new evidence emerges.
Since 2021, during the time of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Beamish Museum, an open-air life working museum, opens up some new attractions including a full scale replica of the house of Joseph Hedley in the Pockerley Farm area.
I’ll update this blog post once new or potential case information comes alight. Until then readers, please subscribe and read more amazing posts!

“I discovered a plausible myth, a trove of red herrings, and, finally, what appeared to be the truth.”
Who killed the Fudge King? For our sister publication The Atavist Magazine, Tom Donaghy investigated—and possibly solved—a decades-old cold case about the murder of Harry Anglemyer, the beloved owner of a fudge shop empire.

UNSOLVED But Not Forgotten: The Lake Bodom Murders
In the summer of 1960, a triple murder against three teenagers who were on a camping trip took place. This is one of the most infamous homicide cases in Finnish history, and over 60 years later, it still remains unsolved.
Tumblr media
The image above: Irmeli, Tuulikki, Seppo, Nils.
On Saturday, June 4th, 1960, four teenagers decided to go on a weekend camping trip at Lake Bodom. Maila Irmeli Björklund and Anja Tuulikki Mäki, both 15, along with their boyfriends, Seppo Antero Boisman and Nils Wilhelm Gustafsson, both 18. Sometime between 4:00AM and 6:00AM on Sunday morning, June 5th, three of the teenagers were found stabbed and bludgeoned to death. The remaining survivor, Gufstafsson, was found unconscious with stab wounds and fractured facial bones. The bodies were discovered around 11:00AM by a carpenter, Esko Johansson.
The investigation declared that the victims were not killed inside of their tents, but while they were outside, fully conscious. It was obvious that the victims were killed with a knife, and they suspected that the item used to bludgeon them was most likely some kind of rock. The weapons were never found. Detectives found it unusual that the killer(s) stole multiple items, including Gufstafssons shoes, and the keys to their motorcycles, which were both left behind. The shoes were found partially hidden around 500 meters from the murder scene. The police made a major error in this investigation, as they didn’t write down any details, nor did they block off the murder site. This mistake was made further problematic as they called in soldiers to help search around the site and the lake for any further items or evidence, most of which weren’t found. Mäki, Gufstafssons girlfriend, was found with the most brutal injuries out of the three. She was found on top of the tent, naked from the waist down, and was stabbed several times after she had already died, while the others had less stab wounds, and none that were made after death. Gufstafsson was also found unconscious on top of the tent, next to his girlfriend. Around 6:00AM, a few boys who were birdwatching a bit of a distance away, noticed the tent had collapsed, and believed they saw a tall blonde man walking away from the area.
Tumblr media
SUSPECTS
There were a lot of suspects over the time-span of the investigation, but these were the top three that were the most notable:
Valdemar Gyllström: A lot of people who lived locally suspected this man, a kiosk keeper, due to his anger and hostility towards campers in the past. They claimed he was violent, threw rocks at campers, cut down their tents, and some people even claimed he was the tall blonde man that they saw walking away from the scene the morning the bodies were discovered. He had apparently made confessions, but not to the police, which they were skeptical about and considered to be false confessions as they considered the man to be disturbed. A book that was released in 2006 brings up this theory in detail, along with how the police ignored a lot of evidence that was previously unknown to the public due to language barriers, along with other things. Valdemar drowned in Lake Bodom in 1969, which was assumed to be a suicide.
Hans Assman: Hans lived pretty close to where the murders occurred, and a series of popular books discussed the theory of this man being the killer, amongst other murders as well. However, this suspect was not taken seriously by the police, as he had a solid alibi the night of the murders, and was said to have been in Germany during the time another murder had taken place.
Last but not least, the most controversial suspect on this list:
Nils Gustafsson: 44 years after the murders, in March of 2004, Gufstafsson was arrested, but the public remained unaware. In early 2005, the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation declared that this case was finally solved, based on new forensic analysis. When it came to the bloodstains, the prosecutors declared that Gustafsson was drunk, and came out of the tent when he attacked the other 18 year old boy, which started the fight, causing his jaw to get broken, and the fight escalated to murder. It was also known that the shoes worn by the killer were found hidden away, 500 yards from the scene, and they were believed to belong to Gufstaffson, considering he was found barefoot at the crime scene. New DNA analysis showed that blood was found on those shoes by all three of the murdered victims, but no blood from Gufstafsson was found on the shoes.
On August 4th, 2005, the trial started. His defense lawyers argued that these murders were the work of one or more outsiders, as it would’ve been impossible for Gufstafsson to kill three people in the condition that he was in. The prosecution rebutted, claiming that his injuries occurred after the murders happened, faking the theft of the items by hiding them, then inflicting his injuries onto himself, and pretending to be unconscious to further make him look like a victim. When Gufstaffson was questioned if he saw the killer, he claimed he saw a glimpse of an attacker, who wore all black and had bright red eyes, running towards them. The prosecution further claimed that he must’ve been the tall blonde man that the bird watching boys saw walking away from the crime scene, along with claiming that he had been overheard making an incriminating remark, along with the claim that he had allegedly boasted to a woman about his guilt a decade after the murders took place.
Gufstafsson was acquitted of all charges on October 7th, 2005, due to the evidence the prosecution gave being inconclusive, certainty about facts now being impossible due to the significant amount of time that had went by, and failing to show any motive that Gufstaffson had to have committed the murders. The state of Finland paid him €44,900 for the mental suffering caused by this trial, and the case remains unsolved to this day.
