Joseph Hedley “Joe the Quilter”
This is my first of many blog posts to come regarding unsolved crime cases here in the United Kingdom and hopefully later worldwide unsolved crime cases. This one is about the local Northumberland quilter, known worldwide by his nickname of Joe the Quilter. Joseph Hedley was found brutally murdered in his own home some days after his wife passing away.
Known for his double-quilting patterns, Joe was a pioneer of quilting and stitching, known for his patterns here in the United Kingdom and in the United States of America as well.
Not long after his passing, his stuff from his home were sold at an auction house in Hexham, Northumberland, UK, and the traces of a potential murderer go amidst. Since then, the case is regarded as a cold case, at least until new evidence emerges.
Since 2021, during the time of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Beamish Museum, an open-air life working museum, opens up some new attractions including a full scale replica of the house of Joseph Hedley in the Pockerley Farm area.
I’ll update this blog post once new or potential case information comes alight. Until then readers, please subscribe and read more amazing posts!

A Horrid Deed The Life and Death of Joe the Quilter
It’s always a pleasure to welcome new guest authors to All Things Georgian and today I’d like to welcome Robert N. Smith who tells us more about the day to day life in the north of England during the Georgian era and his analysis of the truly shocking murder of an elderly man in his home, in his latest, absolutely fascinating book, ‘A Horrid Deed‘. Robert earned his PhD in History from the…

All I've got is I was Amarylis in a school wide production of The Music Man and my friend who was always upstaging me due to being a bit smarter was the kid with a lisp. He accused me of relishing my single scene where I made fun of him and he was 100% correct I was a very spiteful fourth grader.

Joe Biden facing crisis as recession looms for US – inflation surges to 8.5 percent | City & Business | Finance
One measure not rising in the US is the President’s approval rating which has sunk to an all time low of 42 percent. Mr Biden has been under increasing pressure to act on inflation, previously announcing the release of oil from US strategic reserves in a desperate bid to lower prices at the pumps for struggling motorists. REVIEW
Silent Protector by Katie Reus
Verona Bay Series #3
Adeline and Mac have been circling one another for awhile with Mac unsure why Adeline, who seemed interested, blew him off. In close quarters during a storm they talk, deal with the storm, and think they might try again only to have a bad guy get in the way. Thwarting the bad guy, making sure Mac’s brothers are safe, and seeing if their relationship can become more is what this story is about.
What I liked: * Adeline: survivor, dog groomer, quilter, has trust issues, might be ready to settle down, is attracted to Mac, tutor, is a board game champion
* Mac: older brother, ex-military, finished raising his two younger brothers, businessman, carpenter, artist, is attracted to Adeline
* Dylan and Joe – Mac’s younger brothers
* The relationship Mac had with his brothers
* The small-town setting
* Seeing the couples from the previous two books
* That the bad guy was not from Adeline’s past
* That the bad guy was eventually thwarted
What I didn’t like * The bad guy…he was off the charts evil and perhaps damaged?
* The way Mac, Adeline, Joe & Dylan seemed to want to play amateur detective and step in where perhaps they should have let the professionals do the job.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes, but perhaps not as much as the first two books
Can it be read as a standalone story? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and, Inkslinger PR for the ARC – This is my honest review.
4 Stars
About SILENT PROTECTOR:
Some secrets keep you safe…
Adeline Rodriguez left her violent past behind, buried her secrets and started over in Verona Bay. Now a successful co-owner in a local pet grooming business, she’s made a life for herself in this idyllic community, and has real friends. Thanks to her past, the only thing she hasn’t mastered yet is a real relationship. And when circumstances lead her to finally let her guard down with sexy Mac Collins, he completely ghosts her. Her first instinct is to close herself off again, but she decides to confront him instead—and that fateful decision puts her directly in the crosshairs of a killer.
Others can destroy you…
Mac has wanted Adeline since the moment they met, but she made it clear that she didn’t want a relationship. So he kept his distance. When they’re trapped together in a remote cabin, things change between them. But Mac’s past has come back to haunt him, so he pushes her away to protect her. Unfortunately, it’s already too late. Adeline is now a target too. To save her, Mac has no choice except to end the threat. Only then can he try to win over the woman he can’t live without. But winning over the feisty Adeline might prove to be harder than stopping a killer.

EXCERPT
She tried the front door and it was unlocked, which actually surprised her.
“Not open,” Mac’s deep, rumbly voice called out from the back about a second before he stepped out from his workshop. His eyes widened when he saw her.
And he stood there looking like deer in headlights. Good.
“Adeline,” he began.
“A text? Seriously? You blow me off with a freaking text,” she snapped out, her boots stomping forward of their own volition. That burning fire that had spent days kindling was licking up her spine now as she worked up a good head of anger.
He closed his eyes briefly as he moved toward her. “Look, it’s not what you think.”
“Really? It’s not what I think? You didn’t send me a dismissive, crappy text about an hour before our date? After spending all that time together and becoming…friends.” Or she’d thought they had. Obviously she was wrong. “So you didn’t blow me off after all that? And then ignore me right in front of people on Main Street?” It was quite literally possible there was actual steam coming out of her ears right now.
Guilt flickered across his expression for a moment but then his face went carefully neutral. “Look, I didn’t know how else to handle it. I just don’t think we should see each other. I shouldn’t have ignored you and I should have called, but—”
She’d took another step forward, hands on hips, when the front door behind her swung open with a bang.
She jumped and turned to find some guy stalking in. He had on heavy-looking boots, jeans, a short-sleeved T-shirt, and there was a chain hanging from his back pocket attached to his belt. And he had some ugly-looking tattoos on his arms. Prison tats.

Global stock markets surge after Pfizer Covid vaccine news
Global stocks have surged to record highs after the drug companies Pfizer and BioNTech announced that their coronavirus vaccine was 90% effective in tests, giving hope that economies around the world can soon return to normal.
The drug companies’ announcement, just before midday in London, prompted a flurry of activity across global financial markets. MSCI’s all-country world index on Monday surpassed its previous record high even before the vaccine announcement as investors digested Joe Biden’s US presidential election victory, according to Bloomberg data.
The vaccine news pushed the FTSE 100 up by 4.8% to 6,195 points, an increase of 285 points. The index reached its highest level since mid-August.
On Wall Street the benchmark S&P 500 index jumped to a new record high at 3,645.99 points, before retreating to a 3.2% gain for the day. The Dow Jones industrial average and the tech-focused Nasdaq Composite index both also hit new records.
Many of the most pronounced stock market gainers on Monday were the companies most affected by restrictions on movement brought in to fight the pandemic, while companies that had most benefited from lockdowns retreated from some of their spectacular gains.
On the FTSE 100 the biggest winners included shares in the jet engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce, whose earnings are closely tied to the hours flown by planes around the globe. Its shares nearly doubled in value within hours of the news, before retreating to a 50% gain. Shares in the events company Informa soared by 44%, and British Airways’ owner, International Airlines Group, gained as much as 40%, before settling to a 27% increase for the day.
Shares in Cineworld, the world’s biggest cinema chain, gained 38%, although they were still worth only a fifth of their value at the start of the year, with most of its branches closed. Shares in the cruise company Carnival, whose ships were at the centre of multiple prominent coronavirus outbreaks, jumped by 35% to their highest point since June – albeit again only a fraction of their pre-pandemic worth.
Home delivery and video conferencing companies have had huge share price increases during 2020, with quarantined users flocking to their platforms, but the prospect of a quicker easing of lockdowns cooled investor optimism on their prospects.
The value of Zoom Video Communications has more than septupled during 2020 as it rose from business application to household name but its shares lost 16% on Monday. Shares in exercise bike company Peloton Interactive lost almost a fifth of their value as investors questioned whether the pandemic-induced boom in home exercise equipment would last.
The UK home grocery delivery company Ocado also lost 12%, and the Anglo-Dutch food delivery company Just Eat Takeaway fell by 10%. The online white goods retailer AO World – whose sales rose sharply during the first lockdown – lost 12%.
Pfizer shares gained 6.3%, while the US-listed BioNTech rose by 10%.
The prospect of a faster recovery in global economic activity triggered strong gains in oil prices. Futures prices for a barrel of West Texas Intermediate crude oil, the north American benchmark, rose by 9% to $40.58, while the North Sea equivalent, Brent crude, gained 8% to $42.71.
Gold prices fell by as much as 4.8% to $1,853 per troy ounce, down from above $1,960 on Monday morning, as investors abandoned the traditional safe haven in favour of riskier assets.

The Bank of England’s chief economist, Andy Haldane, said he was hopeful that the vaccination news would deliver a quick boost of confidence to the economy, even before vaccines are widely available. The prospect of a vaccine could help avoid the “prolongation of this stop-start cycling” between lockdown and reopening, enabling businesses to invest again, he said in streamed discussion with the Reform thinktank.
Paul Craig, a portfolio manager at Quilter Investors, an investment manager, said the remarkably rapid development of a vaccine candidate less than a year after the first cases were discovered was “hugely positive news” but warned it “is not a silver bullet”.
He said: “Many of the issues facing developed economies now are structural and a vaccine is not going to prevent the large-scale unemployment we are likely to see as a result of the lockdowns of earlier this year. For now, however, it is a positive and the companies benefiting certainly represent a reopening trade of some sorts.”

Beamish Museum Plans to Make History
Beamish Museum’s new project expected to create around 100 construction jobs
Beamish Museum is an open air museum in England. It has been around for quite a while and now is planning to expand. The project is expected to cost around £18 million and will bring around 100 new jobs related to construction. The project is titled ‘Remaking Beamish’ and is the biggest project in the 48-year history of the museum. 30 new exhibits are planned to be added, which will include a 1950s town and farm, along with a Georgian cottage and a coach house.
The new project will create around 100 construction jobs which will also include construction apprenticeships which will provide a great opportunity to learn alongside skilled and experienced mentors. The work has already started and is expected to finish around 2021.
Project Beamish is quite big and around 30 people from different trades will be working simultaneously on four building sites at any one time. The 1950s town will also include a cinema which is being moved from Sunderland. It will also include a community center, homes, shops, café and other similar structures.
Read the complete article to learn more about the Beamish Museum’s new gigantic project!
The project is expected to create around 100 new jobs and training opportunities, including up to 50 apprenticeships.
Spain’s Field Farm, from Weardale, has been de-constructed and will be rebuilt at Beamish to tell the story of rural life in the 1950s.
The expansion of the 1820s Landscape will include a coaching inn where visitors can stay overnight.
There will also be a recreation of murdered Joe the Quilter’s cottage.
The extension is expected to attract an extra 100,000 tourists to the region.
The museum will remain open throughout the building programme.

Hanging trees and hollering ghosts: the unsettling art of the American deep south
The porch of artist Emmer Sewell.
"The quilters of Gee’s Bend make art out of recycled cloth. Lonnie Holley crafts sculptures out of car tyres and other human detritus. Self-taught luthier Freeman Vines carves guitars out of wood that came from a 'hanging tree' once used to lynch black men. The 'yard shows' of Dinah Young and Joe Minter are permanent exhibitions of their art – a cacophony of 'scrap-iron elegies'. Almost all of this art comes from Alabama, and it all features in We Will Walk, Turner Contemporary’s groundbreaking new exhibition of African-American art from the southern state and its surroundings. ..."

More Amazing Photos You Missed From the Women's March in Washington, D.C.
On Saturday, women, men, children, and even pets, from all walks of life, on all seven continents (yes, including Antartica) joined together in solidarity for the Women’s March. While the marches took place in cities worldwide, Washington, D.C. was the epicenter for the movement, where hundreds of thousands descended upon the city in attempts to stand up not only for women’s rights, but for human rights, and to send a message that climate change is real, and it is up to us to stop it. High estimates for D.C.’s march state up to 680,000 people rallied on the streets of the nation’s capital.
The crowds were reportedly so large, that folks couldn’t use the original protest route, and instead they clustered in the streets, marching to the White House, dispersing through the capital, a sea of pink cat-eared hats and picket signs. No arrests were made.
It signifies that, even though many say the country is divided, there is still clearly a lot of unity still in the land.
Click through the slideshow above to see some of the sights from the demonstration.

“On this shirt, I say why I march. And the shirt isn’t big enough for me to list everything, but I kind of wrote down Black Lives Matter, equal rights for women. The earth is important and we need to save it because climate change is real, love is love, you should have the freedom to choose your religion and your spirituality, and have choice in your own beliefs. I’m just here for all that.” (Photo: Joel Barhamand)

“I wanted to learn how to sew. My neighbor is a quilter, so she helped me make a cape into a sign. … I just wanted to bring a little bit of kindness back.” (Photo: Joel Barhamand)

Molly Kavanaugh, Glenn Rischke, Chicago, Illinois
Molly: “These are leftover halloween costumes from a couple years ago, when I was ‘Boy George Washington'” Glenn: “and I was ‘Isaiah Thomas Jefferson'” Molly: “We kind of did some work on converting them for the Women’s March… It’s been really amazing, super positive, and when you dress up at something like this you get a lot of attention… this [event] brings me a lot of hope, just seeing all the people, so many more people today than yesterday. Some days, it seems a little bit dismal, but there is a lot of power in numbers.” Glenn: “This thing wasn’t going to mean anything if people didn’t show up, but people showed up, and it’s making a statement.” (Photo: Joel Barhamand)

Alexandra Kernan – Schloss
“My outfit is about women’s rights, it’s about Black Lives Matter, protecting my vulva and all of the vulvas here today and in the world and the U.S.. We walked across from Arlington, Virginia where they were all Trump supporters, and they were heckling us the whole way. It was really empowering to come over and be in this incredible community and be with my fiancée, who is a man and a feminist. Yesterday was a hard day, today is an amazing day.” (Photo: Joel Barhamand)

Maisie Wilhelm, Brooklyn, NY, and Siri Gottlieb, Ann Arbor, MI
Maisie: “I’m wearing a cat hat, and I’m wearing a sign that says fight the good fight. I’m here to engage people for more political and social action. The Good Fights is a group I started post-election with four other friends across the country. We post daily calls to action for people who want to be involved and we make it very simple for them to fight the good fights. Thegoodfights.org” Siri: “I couldn’t be prouder [of my daughter]. I was reminiscing about the last time I marched on Washington. She was 7 years old. It was pro-choice. It’s the same fight. I see all the women with sings saying, ‘I can’t believe I’m still protesting this [expletive].’ This is unbelievable. We knew it would be phenomenal, but there’s nothing like the visceral thrill and the pride that you feel when you are surrounded by people who made real sacrifices to get here. It’s important. We’re very proud to be here. I’m marching for my daughter and granddaughter.” (Photo: Joel Barhamand)
