The End of An Era - A Tribute to Milk! Records
How fast time passes us by, so why donât you hold them - Remedy Waloni
I am writing this piece as I sip on a tall hot latte at a Starbucks inside a chain bookstore near my campus, a scene that I would have never imagined when my girlfriend took me to Seven Seeds in Carlton near her campus nine years ago. Her senpai took her there on her first week in Melbourne and she ordered hot chocolate, not convinced that the famous Melbourne coffee was different and would win her over. She used to not be able to stand the smell of second-wave coffee and coffee shops. In the early 2010âs, my brand new (and still alive) iPod video consisted of Alvvays, Bon Iver, Beirut, DCFC, Bombay Bicycle Club, and Wild Beasts. Teguh Wicaksono regularly made a super indie playlist for National Geographic Traveler. It was an exciting time. We went from spending our time going to Periplus Malioboro just to stare at Frankie to finding them at news kiosks everywhere in Australia. The third-wave was taking over in the peak of the hipster years, and we were relieved that the same trend had occupied Yogyakarta when we returned home a year later. Light roast direct trade coffee with manual brew and single origins were introduced perhaps not very successfully by snobbish male baristas as the market preferred cheap iced coffee with condensed milk as their go-to drink and young male smokers remained loyal to the dark roast americano with sugar added. Â Â
I was reminded of all the buzz about the end of an era as Ronaldo and Messi left the European football scene when I heard that Milk! Records announced that they will close its doors in 2023. It was the heart of Melbourne independent music scene. I learned and took so many references from that music label and its community. It was the year Real Estate released Atlas, the year I was hooked by the brilliance of Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownsteinâs Portlandia. Courtney Barnett released Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, Methyl Ethel and Twerps completed their second album, and Dick Diver finished Melbourne, Florida, a staple of their distinctive Australiana sound.
Melbourne was a manifestation of an idea of how diverse the communities can be in a city. It could not be better: multiculturalism, the rising awareness of indigenous issues, Palestine, and animal rights debates, farm-to-table dining and direct trade sustainable produce, the tram lines, queer people kissing in front of old houses in Brunswick, the radical ideas of what a library is and can be, the New Yearâs Eve fireworks in River Torrens, all the bookshops and empty wet streets, Papa Ginoâs in Carlton, the A1 bakery in Sydney Road, Al-Alamy in Coburg, taking a book conservation training under the supervision of Karen Vidler, summertime bus ride along the majestic Adelaide coastlines, Adelaide Showground, the morning view from a room in Sturrock Street, a summer evening in St Kilda, my obsession with Steph Hughesâ illustrations, and the bitter smell of cheap morning to-go coffee in an unnamed stall in Adelaide station, introduced to me by a woman who worked in my apartment. They ground the beans and made the coffee in a proper espresso machine. There was always a long line of blue collar workers. The beans were dark roast, so bitter that you cannot drink it properly without sugar. I remained one of their regulars during those beautiful days in Adelaide because what is coffee even for if not to be romanticized.
That era in Australia changed (if not solidified) me, and I could not feel more fortunate to do my Master's there. I was a nobody, a 23 year-old working administrative-level job under a yearly contract dying to escape my routine and dysfunctional family dynamics. It was a small chance as the scholarship mainly goes to civil servants with a solid experience and career path. I didnât have much to offer so I had to make it seem like I knew what I was doing somehow and they bought it. I spent all of my savings to give the best care to ten stray cats I rescued. My parents did not give me any money when I left for Australia, despite their âsuccessâ in their respective career. I even gave mom my last 100,000 at the airport because I knew she needed the money.
When I rode my Tokyobike slowly for a morning commute to campus, I felt that it was surely the end of an era. The new young Indonesian bands I can no longer relate to, the fact that my hair is no longer perfectly straight and surrenders to my momâs curly genetics, the way I managed to understand Japanese cashiers and their many questions before letting me pay for my order, reminiscing the Sefton Park suburb while indulging in the views of Zuibaiji river and the vast open rice fields everyday on the way to campus.
Australians enjoy a slow brunch, the Japanese eat a very effective breakfast. Australians spend a long summer holiday, the Japanese take a week-long summer break. Australians invented their perfectly balanced flat white, the Japanese preserved and perfected their simple drip coffee.
They are totally in contrast, yet from the life I have here and there I learn something in common: that you can be the kind of people who do not define yourself with your titles, job positions or external achievements. The kind of people who have a life outside their job. The people who are more interested in enriching their lives than pursuing the conventional idea of success. People who take seemingly trivial things seriously and deeply. They read, bike, walk, garden, bake, brew, ferment, cook, eat, drink, taste, feel, meet, see, write, watch, and listen consciously. They keep searching for something new and they are excited to learn.
Some people need to advance their career so much they are willing to do literally anything and sacrifice others when they realize they canât do achieve anything just by relying on their skills and competence. Theyâre the type who might not appreciate walking to a green space, getting joy from looking at the ducks in the pond, being overly excited to see wild turtles in the river. But thereâs no need to be so stressed out about going down if you can just choose to not go up.
Your titles and privileges can and will end, but ideas and knowledge go on. Rest in Peace, Milk! Records.

Odds & Ends: November 17, 2023
Crio Bru. Iâm not a coffee drinker, but I like to have something warm to sip on as I get the day going. Kate and I have enjoyed Crio Bru on and off for the past few years, and itâs currently part my morning routine. Itâs a drink made with ground cacao beans that you brew just like coffee. Like coffee, Crio Bru comes in different flavors and roasts. And like coffee too, it has a watery consistency and bitter taste; while itâs a chocolate drink, you shouldnât expect it to taste like rich hot chocolate. Itâs definitely its own thing. Crio Bru is 99% caffeine free, but has theobromine, a natural stimulant that is milder and longer-lasting than caffeine. Pick up a sampler pack to see which flavor you like. The Wisdom of Mike Mentzer: The Art, Science, and Philosophy of a Bodybuilding Legend. I used this book as a resource for this weekâs article about Mike Mentzerâs Heavy Duty bodybuilding program. I think the most interesting part of the book is exploring Mentzerâs philosophy towards bodybuilding and life. He thought bodybuilding was way more than lifting weights and getting jacked; it was an exercise in manifesting beauty, nobility, and heroism; he thought bodybuilding was philosophy. Mentzer was heavily influenced by Ayn Randâs Objectivism. Whether or not youâre into that school of thought, itâs fascinating to see a guy try to physically manifest an abstract philosophy through the sculpture of his body. Youâll definitely feel inspired to reach further and higher after reading this book. First-Gen Social Media Users Have Nowhere to Go. I resonated with this article. As an older Millennial, I was an early adopter of social media and used it quite a bit both personally and professionally at first. But in the past few years, not so much. Just havenât had the desire to. I havenât logged into my personal Facebook account in years. For a long time now, weâve scaled back how much we post and interact on AoMâs FB and IG accounts. I have no desire to start the TikTok habit, whether for work or pleasure. I find myself just using text to share things I find on the web and only do so with my close friends. Seems like a lot of other older Millennials are doing the same thing. Sunglasses Kid. I have no clue how I found this guy, but heâs a British synthwave producer who makes instrumental music thatâs influenced by the music and movies of the 1980s and early 1990s. Lots of awesome synthesizers and steamy saxophones. Whenever Iâm listening to Sunglasses Kid, I feel like Iâm hanging out at The Max with my old pals from Bayside High or going to Golf âN Stuff with Ali (with an i). Great music for doing chores or mindless tasks. âFalling in Love at the Drive-in,â âRed Shoes,â and âGraduationâ are a few my favorites. Quote of the Week Ninety percent of the worldâs woe comes from people not knowing themselves, their abilities, their frailties, and even their real virtues. Most of us go almost all the way through life as complete strangers to ourselvesâso how can we know anyone else? âSydney J. Brewing Excellence Down Under: The Art of Coffee Roasting in Australia
Australia is a land known for its stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and vibrant cities. But tucked away in the heart of this vast continent is another hidden gem that is gaining global recognition â Australian coffee. Behind every delicious cup of coffee, there's a dedicated coffee roaster, and Australia has been making significant strides in perfecting the art of coffee roasting.
A Growing Obsession with Coffee
Coffee culture in Australia has come a long way in the past few decades. What was once a nation of tea drinkers has now evolved into a thriving coffee haven. Australians take their coffee seriously, and the demand for high-quality, freshly roasted beans has given rise to a burgeoning coffee roasting industry.
The Art of Roasting
Coffee roasting is both a science and an art. It's the crucial process that transforms green coffee beans into the aromatic and flavorful beans used to brew your morning cup. In Australia, this process is approached with dedication and a commitment to perfection. Roasters in Australia source beans from all over the world, from the lush coffee farms of South America to the highlands of Ethiopia, and they bring these beans to life through a meticulous roasting process.
Quality and Sustainability
One of the distinguishing features of Australian coffee roasters is their dedication to quality and sustainability. Many roasters source their beans directly from growers, forming relationships that ensure fair prices and ethical farming practices. Additionally, they prioritize environmentally friendly roasting methods, reducing their carbon footprint in the pursuit of the perfect roast.
A Unique Australian Flavor
Each Australian coffee roaster brings its unique touch to the beans they roast, resulting in a diverse range of flavor profiles. From rich and chocolate to bright and fruity, Australian coffee reflects the country's multicultural influences and its commitment to innovation in the coffee industry.
Community and Connection
Coffee is more than just a beverage; it's a social connector. In Australia, cafes serve as communal hubs where people come together to share stories, ideas, and, of course, excellent coffee. Coffee roasters play a vital role in nurturing this sense of community by supplying cafes and homes with beans that have been roasted with care and passion.
The Future of Coffee Roasting in Australia
As the demand for specialty coffee continues to grow worldwide, Australian coffee roasters are poised to make an even more significant impact on the global coffee scene. Their commitment to quality, sustainability, and innovation sets them apart and ensures that the aroma of freshly Roasted Australian Coffee Beans will continue to captivate coffee lovers both locally and abroad.
In conclusion, the rise of Coffee Roasters in Australia is not only a testament to the country's growing coffee culture but also a reflection of its commitment to excellence and sustainability. Australian coffee roasters are crafting a unique coffee experience, one that celebrates quality, flavor diversity, and a strong sense of community. Whether you're sipping a latte in Sydney or brewing at home, Australian coffee is a delightful journey that takes you from the source to the cup, showcasing the best of what the world of coffee has to offer.

Recipe Post: Vegan Custard Biscuits These were one of my favourite biscuits growing and my mother made a large batch every week to dunk into hot tea, coffee and chocolate drinks. We need, * 1 cup Wholemeal Self Raising Flour, sifted * 1 cup Nuttelex Buttery, or other Dairy Free Butter * 1/2 cup Erythritol, powdered with 1/4" Vanilla Bean * 1/2 cup Vanilla Custard Powder Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C, line a flat baking tray with baking paper or silicon liner. 2. Whisk the Nuttelex and Erythritol until fluffy. 3. Fold in the custard powder and Wholemeal SRF until well mixed. 4. Gently roll into smooth balls 1" in diameter and place on the baking tray. 5. Use a fork as I have to lightly flatten the cookies or use the back of a large spoon. 6. Bake for 15 - 18 minutes. Iâve noticed my new oven heats and cooks faster on a setting called 4 D air flow. 7. Cool the biscuits on the sheet for 5 minutes and then transfer on to the drying rack. These biscuits stay well in an airtight jar up to 2 weeks, if they last that long! #vegan #masalavegan #biscuits #custard #homebaking #delicious #lockdownbaking #tasty #crisp (at Sydney, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQmiFIfpQTR/?utm_medium=tumblr

Did your parents live in a different country before you were born? No, theyâve lived in the Philippines their whole lives and continue to do so. Do you have a preferred coffee brand? UCC for legit, artisan, but expensive coffee; Starbucks, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, and Coffee Project are tied for my preferred coffee shops for studying. Outside of these, the other cafes Iâve been in serve average coffee. What's something you've experienced that very few others have? Blocked by their favorite celebrity. Do you have to wear an identification badge at your job? I donât have a job. But yes, Iâm required to wear an ID to school. My university is pretty strict about it. Have you ever dated someone who was terrible with money? ME. Iâm the someone who is terrible with money. Gabieâs stuck with me and has to tell me off all the time to keep my wallet away lmfao.
If so, how did it affect the relationship? It doesnât. Gab finds it silly but she always turns serious about wanting to help me so itâs not like weâre taking it lightly. How often do you paint your nails? Never. The last time I had my nails painted was two months ago, I was drunk and simply offered my hand to a friend who happened to have nail polish in her bag that night loooool Do you know anyone who's related to a current or former world leader? Yes but she stays quiet about it because her relative is a pretty fucking unpopular president. Do you do your own taxes, or do you hire a professional? The only tax I pay so far is the one they add to your receipt when you buy anything, so. What is something you don't have any natural talent for? Drawing. Did you watch this year's Eurovision? I never gave a ratâs ass about it. Have there been any periods in your life that could be described as being chaotic? Absolutely. Lots of periods, too. What was the last thing you purchased used? Iâm not too sure about the grammar on this sentence but the last thing I got was a dark chocolate macadamia cookie from Starbucks. Has anyone ever told you that you get too competitive over minor things? Yes. And itâs true, so itâs nothing to get offended by. Do you have hair on your toes? Just a little. Got those hairy genes from my dad, definitely. Do you usually befriend your coworkers, or do you prefer to keep work separate from your personal life? The closest thing I have to coworkers are my orgmates, and yes I am close friends with some and friends with lots of them. When we get to work though I always keep it professional. What was the very first thing you ever saved up to buy with your own money? I bought like a huge, thick Marvel history book because that was the time I really wanted to get into comic books. I regretted my purchase as soon as I handed over the money it was worth. Describe your favorite Christmas ornament. I donât have one. What is something you frequently forget? Where I last place my glasses. If I looked in your fridge right now, what would I find? A box of chocolates, some bread, a bunch of frozen products in the freezer, vegetables, some sauces/condiments/seasoning, water. How do you feel about your body? Iâm alright with it, but as I always say itâs always nice to gain some more weight. Who is someone you would like to get to know better? Hannah! We got closer as we made our comm res paper together but I really want to be much closer with her as a friend. If you had to move to a new city, where would you move? If money wasnât an option, Sydney. Or idk somewhere in Canada, whichever is the most Filipino-friendly city there. Have you ever traveled on a double-decker train? Iâve never even been on a train except once. What's your opinion on assisted suicide? As long as itâs coming directly from the person wishing for their life to end and they are in the right mind asking for it, then itâs no issue with me. It always has to come from the person at hand themselves. At what point do you consider a relationship to be 'long-term?' I honestly have no idea, thatâs why I avoid terms like that. I guess when youâve matured enough to the point that the petty things you used to fight about mean nothing now, and itâs more about seeing your SO achieving their dreams and wanting them to grow up individually. What jobs did your parents have when you were growing up? Dad was a waiter, mom was a waitress. Do they still have these jobs? Or different jobs? Or have they retired? No. Theyâve definitely climbed up the ladder now; my dad has a high position in the cruise ship company he works in and my mom has taken to secretarial positions in hotels. Do you own any winter sports equipment? I donât have any sports equipment. Do you have a cell contract plan, or are you on a pre-paid plan? Prepaid. Do you have any recurring dreams? Not really.
