I have written a lot less this year than in the past. When I first started writing in late 2021 I published roughly 80k words in 4 months, followed by 120k in 2022 and 83k in 2023. This year clocked in at only 46k. Despite the downward trend, I still wrote some stuff. Here’s a list:

🛼 Keep the Skates On - Explicit - 4k

Self indulgent roller skating fic for Erotic Grope Fest that I say is just a blowjob on wheels but in reality has some good backstory built in via flashbacks of their meet cute.

This story was also immortalized via art by the crazy talented Rimeswithpurple. Even just the shot of Baz’s skates and Simon’s shoes is so cinematic and big brained it still blows my mind.

💦Swimple Times, Swimple Pleasures - Mature - 2.5k

Baz and Simon rent a backyard pool for an hour while in Nebraska and sexy times ensue. Hopefully no one is watching…

This was a gift fic meant to immortalized an interesting yet lovely afternoon with friends in Omaha at SSCONE. Good times.

⏱️Back and Back and Back - Mature - 21k (WIP)

My time travel, canon divergent AU in which Baz is visited throughout his childhood by a Dragon Man he comes to find is an older version of his Watford roommate and nemesis.

My poor abandoned WIP. What can I say? It’s fully plotted via outline but I just lost steam writing this one. The school year took over in the fall and it just seemed unwieldy to come back to. But I love this story and playing with what might change in canon with this twist and what could have stubbornly stayed the same. I’m a completionist in many ways so there’s a good chance I’ll come back to this but without anything like a fest deadline lighting a fire under me it may be a while.

🕺The Wedding Planner - Teen - 6k

Baz, the wedding planner for a high profile wedding, gets roped into standing in for the bride in a dance lesson with the groom. The only problem is the frustratingly handsome groom and him have a past…

This fic was written in collaboration with Rimeswithpurple for CORB. Arianna killed it with the art, and it was such a joy to bring words to her idea. This story is a 40k fic disguised in a smaller package. I used a lot of flashbacks to build out the backstory (a similar strategy that I used in Keep the Skates On) which was wonderfully helpful because without it, I doubt I would have been able to write either fic. I think I was really feeling incapable of writing plotty stuff after temporarily shelving Back and Back and Back, and for both of these fics I found I could not write from the beginning because I didn’t want to do the slog through the set up. What ultimately worked for both was opening a new doc, starting the story in the middle, and filling in backstory as I went where necessary. This worked wonders, especially when I was crunched for time or feeling uninspired. I wrote the parts I wanted to write, which helped me get invested, and then the other bits followed easily. I’m such a linear writer that I never thought this strategy would work for me (starting with the scene I wanted to write) but! Cheat code! Start there and still write straight through! Amazing!

🎁 From the Heart - Teen - 12k

Watford, truce era, canon divergent story in which Simon finds Baz’s list of gift ideas for his Secret Santa assignment and freaks out when he realizes it’s for him. Baz? Trying to be thoughtful toward Simon? Cute gift giving crises soon follows.

This was a gift for @bookishbroadwayandblind for the Carry On discord server’s Secret Snowflake Exchange. This was so fun to write. Just fluffy, cute, pining with very low angst and a satisfying get together. Come for the silly premise, stay for the feeeeelings.

It’s nice to see these all stacked up because even though I wrote a lot less this year, AO3 still says I had 3k hits, 391 kudos, 109 comment threads, 77 bookmarks and 42 work subscriptions in 2024. That ain’t nothing! Thank you to everyone who engaged with these stories ✌🏻

Playing my tiny violin for a moment because sometimes we gotta keep it real and share the struggles:

-This was the first year I struggled with keeping up with people’s tumblr tags and posts and I feel a little sad when the notifs pile up and I haven’t responded. Sorry fam!

-Similarly, my AO3 inbox is full of comments I haven’t responded to which also bums me out. I kept it at zero for 3 years (I never delete, I either respond or mark responses as read) and my damn WIP has made me feel incapable of responding to nice comments because I’ve left it languishing. I love our comment culture in this fandom and I would like to get around to responding at some point.

-While organizing and helping to facilitate CORB can be really fun, there were a lot of behind the scenes challenges this year, some of which are still buzzing around my head.

Looking ahead to 2025

As many have said in their own posts, the community and friendships are the best parts of fandom and I hope to continue to cultivate those in 2025. That’s my main goal. Keep these relationships and keep vibing with y’all. I’m sure I’ll still be reading fic and ogling fanart. I’d like to get back to doing more fic rec posts and organizing them in some way. Maybe I’ll finish my WIP. Hopefully I’ll reply to all those lovely comments in my inbox. I might help mod some other fests. CORB is in need of new mods. I’ll organize a way to either get myself some help or possibly pass the torch if there’s interest in it running again.

Secret Santa 2023 SIGN UPS

Hi All and welcome to Secret Santa 2023! 

This is a Clint Barton and/or Natasha Romanoff end of year fic exchange where matching is based on prompts and everything is anonymous until the author reveals at the end. You don't need to be a member of the be_compromised community to take part, however this year almost all of the exchange will be taking place on AO3, so you will need an AO3 account; if you don't have one and would like an invite code please contact a mod. For fans of our usual format, don't worry, we're still keeping Prompt Choices which is the one element that will be done on dreamwidth.

Whilst this is labelled a 'Secret Santa' as it takes place in the run up to Christmas, fics do NOT have to be related to Christmas, New Year, winter etc. We welcome celebrations of other holidays and no theme at all. However we understand if you would rather not take part due to the labelling. We wish you all a happy holiday season <3

TIMELINE

SIGN UP: from now until 15:00 GMT Monday 16 October.

CHOICES POST: will go up as soon as possible and be available until 18:00 GMT Sunday 22nd October.

ASSIGNMENTS SENT OUT: we aim to have these to you within the following few days. (If all participants make their choices earlier, then we'll aim to get assignments out earlier!)

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 15:00 GMT Monday 11 December. (This is to allow time for pinch hitting if/where needed.)

GIFT POSTING/REVEALS: Dependent on if participants submit on time / any pinch hit requirements, we aim to reveal gifts somewhere between 15 to 19 December.

AUTHOR REVEALS: We aim to reveal authors 22 to 24 December, giving readers some time to read gifts before we do this.

HOW TO TAKE PART IN HE EXCHANGE:

1) SIGN UP HERE AT AO3.

In the REQUEST section in 'Details/Description' you must include: at least 4 prompts and no more than 6. These can be anything! From a one word prompt like 'kisses' to a specific AU idea. Past Secret Santa prompts (such as 2022 here) or promptathon prompts (2023 here) may be helpful if you get stuck. If you really don't mind what gift you receive then please feel free to say so, but you MUST leave at least 4 prompts for your giftee to have something to work with.

You are also welcome to include in the 'Details/Description' section: - a Yes Please note: a brief list of things you like that aren't as specific as a prompt, such as a preference for the comics or film, sexy times, female friendships, hurt/comfort etc. Your gift giver isn’t obliged to use them, but it can help give them some ideas. - a No Thank You note: anything that you really do not want, such as character death, angst, fluff, anything that might be triggering for you etc. Feel free to specify if some things are just a rather not and some are no-way, not-ever.

Matching will be based on the information from the 'Details/Description' section ONLY. Optional: you can use 'Ratings', 'Archive Warnings' and 'Categories' to list all those that you would be comfortable receiving. You can use 'Characters', 'Relationships', and 'Tags' to select things that you like (from all canonical AO3 tags). As above, your gift giver is not obliged to consider or use these, but it may help them with ideas.

In the OFFER section the only thing you need to complete is the 'Details/Description' with: - I'd Rather Not: things that you don’t really like to create or feel uncomfortable with, anything you don’t feel confident in writing or a genre that isn’t your strength. - Absolutely Not: Things that are an absolute no for you, such as anything triggering, character death, things that you will not do.

2) The prompts and any additional notes you included in the 'Details/Description' section for your REQUEST will be anonymised and posted to the community dreamwidth. You MUST reply in a comment to that Choices Post (which will only be visible to the mods) with your top three picks of which requests you’d like to create for. You don't need a dreamwidth account to do this; you can comment using OpenID or anonymously, however please remember to include your AO3 handle in your comment so we know who you are! (More information will be available in the Choices Post.) This will be available as soon as possible following the closing of sign ups until 18:00 GMT Sunday 22 October. (If all participants comment earlier we will try to get matching and assignments out faster.)

3) Your prompt choices will be used by the mods to do manually match participants in the exchange. We can't guarantee that you’ll get your choices, but we’ll do our best keep to your choices as much as possible! Where there are any issues with matching or where participants have not commented to the prompt choices post as in (2) we will use your OFFER notes to help with matching and avoid your 'Absolutely Nots'. (In rare cases you may get a request that has something it in from your ‘rather not’ section that you can ignore, because the request has other prompts in it or because it’s not a deal breaker for the requester, but these are things that we will make sure you don’t get in your assignment if we can absolutely help it.)

4) Assignments will be sent out and you'll have until 15:00 GMT Monday 11 December to submit your gifts (which aims to cover our usual 'midnight on the Sunday whatever your timezone).

5) We will reveal gifts in the week leading up to Christmas (aiming for 15 to 19 December; exact dates to be confirmed depending on any pinch hit requirements) and authors will be revealed the weekend before Christmas (aiming for 22 to 24 December).

2022 Art Summary

Sooooooooooooooooo, how late do I need to be to be considered fashionably late? Do I need to wait another month?

Anyway, here’s my 2022 art summary! I had to get a little unconventional just cause this year really wasn’t an art year haha. These aren’t in any specific order. My reflection questions are under the cut!

What events did you participate in (with art)? Player Appreciation Week, Pidge Angst Bang (raffle art), Code Secret Santa

What was your biggest challenge this year? I think my biggest challenge would have to be time. Just like with writing, school kind of swallowed up my chance to draw pretty effectively. That being said, I also had a rough time because I literally had 6 months of no consistent device. Trying to art while having a rotation of laptops that didn’t work right was very not ideal. And searching through all my files to find the art pics to compile for this kind of sucked too haha. Oh, and there was period of time where I legit thought I was going to need to leave CSP cause they were making some very questionable decisions. They’ve since gone back on the most important one though, so I think I probably will at least try.

What was something you were surprised by? I got to try out drawing with a 2 in 1 laptop/stylus which was interesting! I actually enjoyed it a lot more than I expected, even with lower pressure sensitivity and such. I also think I was surprised this year by just how much of a different filters can make. I’d messed around with them some last year, but hooboy, they’re a toolbox I feel like I’ve barely opened now.

Where do you think you most improved? Maybe my coloring? I was a lot less shy about coloring in different ways this year and I think it worked in most cases! I also think that I’m slowly getting more comfortable with just saying screw it with anatomy, which might not actually be improvement per se, but it means I’m more willing to try and fail which is always good for art.

What are you most proud of? I’m really not sure, tbh. I really like the lighting in the star wars au art, and I was proud of the Code Lyoko group picture just because I went for a huge group picture on a tight time frame and tried shading. That being said, I think I’m most proud of myself for storyboarding my 30 minutes animatic. That thing makes me so happy when I look at it and I really do like how it turned out, especially considering it’s my first time actually creating full thumbnails. I don’t actually have the thumbnails included above but the mountain/Player one in the bottom row is a concept sketch I created for one part of the animatic.

How’d this year compare to your 2022 goals? To be honest, not very closely haha. I was expecting art to be easier to combine with school since its lower brain power for me, but it was about as limited as writing. I do like what I did make though! In terms of specifics, I’m just going to go list item by list item from my last year’s reflection.

-Brushes: I’d say for how little art I did this year, I think I actually did try a fair amount of new brushes! Particularly with coloring, but also in doodles. -Shading and Lighting: I think comparatively I did okay in this area too. I definitely didn’t do as many colored pieces as I’d like, but I did almost as many colored/shaded pieces as doodles, which is a huge step forward from last year! -More Dynamic Scenes and Positions: Hmmmmmmmmm this one is hard to say. I do think I was a little more adventurous this year, but I definitely could have branched out from my comfort zone a bit more. -Experiment With 3D Sets!!!: Hahahhhhhaahhahahhahahahhahaa yeah, I don’t know that I even touched these this year oops. So gonna have to go with a hard fail on this one. -Post More: Mmmmmmmmm yeah no, this one also was not great. I think everything I posted was part of an event. Most of the art in my summary hasn’t even been shared outside my main 3-person discord server haha.

Alrighty then, now it’s time for 2023 goals!! Okay, so I’m really hoping that I’ll be able to do more this year. I missed creating a lot last year and I’ve got so much I’d like to do. It’s really hard to say with the uncertainty of a new school/program, but so far I’ve already created more art than last year, so my fingers are crossed. Having my Acer Spin with its built in wacom stylus really seems to have made a difference, so here’s to hoping! Specifics: -One fully colored piece per month -Finish Huntlow comic -Player Appreciation Week -Add to zine portfolio -Apply to at least one zine as an artist (fine if don’t get accepted) -30 minutes animatic digitalize rough draft -Pull out some old WIPs -Keep experimenting with backgrounds and shading -Maybe make some fanart of my favorite fics? As an author I’ve always been so flattered by those so I’d love to do the same for others -Build more consistency of style Overall, how’d the year go? I definitely don’t think it went the way I was hoping for it too, but at the same time, I made so much progress on animatics and really did try some new stuff out, so I don’t think it was too bad! Cutting myself some slack for quantity, I think I’m proud of most of what I did and have continued to gain experience/confidence. I’m looking forward to this year! Also as a reward for anyone who got this far, please take this quality finger art I did while trying to get a feel for angles of an angst scene. It was late and clearly my brain was not in angst mode by the end lol. Obviously, this is my true best art of the year.

My Review: Janice Hallett only writes clever and entertaining books, this one is the perfect example of how she mixes humour, social satire and a description of the relationship amongst the member of the The Fairway Players. There's a good balance amongst these elements: the power plays, the snobism and class distinction, the secrets hidden behind the facade. I had a lot of fun but I think there was also food for thought as sharp and witty social remarks are spot on. This is a story set at Christmas time but it's not a Christmas story. There's any magic moment with the snow falling, there's plenty of very funny moments. It was a great follow up to The Appeal, an original and fresh novel that I read in one sitting. Code Secret Santa for @vexfulfolly !!!!

You asked for some no romo and some William, and I was pretty inspired! I really hope you enjoy this ♡

William sighed and stabbed at a cherry tomato in his side salad, resting his cheek on his fist. No one else was at his table, and when he glanced up, he could see his former group at their table, and he bit the inside of his cheek as he stabbed at his salad a few more times. He closed his eyes and sighed again. Maybe he could put his head down and rest before his next class at least.

William's eyes snapped open when he heard a cough from in front of him and he glared weakly when he saw Ulrich. He seemed nervous, drumming his fingers on his lunch tray, and William leaned on his crossed arms.

"What do you want?"

"Could I sit here? I want to talk to you if that's okay." Ulrich wouldn't meet his eyes and William narrowed his.

"Sure, whatever. Can't promise I'm much for conversation right now, though," William looked back at his lunch and continued attacking his salad.

Ulrich sat across from him and poked at his peas in silence. Just before William was about to ask what he wanted to say, Ulrich sighed. 

"I'm sorry."

Of all the things William expected Ulrich to say, that was not one of them. He looked at Ulrich in confusion and Ulrich refused to look up at him.

"I should not have been so hard on you. For anything. I just… I really didn't like you because I hated that you liked Yumi so I didn't even try to give you a chance," Ulrich tapped his tray with his fork. "And then you were really helpful and I still didn't want you to join the group because I was still jealous. Which was… really selfish, given what was at stake."

William couldn't believe his ears.

"And then when you did join the group, none of us warned you about the Scyphozoa. That was our fault. We should have prepared you better, warned you better," Ulrich sighed. "What happened wasn't your fault and we've all been really unfair holding it against you when it's on us, not you."

"I… why are you telling me this?" William narrowed his eyes. "Did you draw the short straw on who had to try and make peace?"

"I'm telling you this because we're sorry. Me especially," Ulrich finally looked up to meet his eyes. "If you wanted to, we'd really like it if you joined the group again. No pressure if you're upset with us and don't want to. And… I thought it might mean more coming from me since I was the biggest jerk to you, so I volunteered to tell you."

William mulled it over and shrugged. "Do I have to answer right now?"

Ulrich shook his head. "No, take all the time you need, we just wanted to let you know so you can decide for yourself."

"Thank you. I… will think about it," William nodded. "And thank you. It… does mean a lot coming from you. And I'm sorry. I was also being kind of a jerk once I realized how mad you got when I flirted with Yumi."

Ulrich shrugged and smiled softly. "Water under the bridge if you're cool with it. I do want to let you know though that I apologized to Yumi too for getting so jealous over her and I think it would mean a lot if you did too. You don't have to. I just wanted to let you know that she might appreciate it."

"For sure, for sure," William nodded. He could feel tension draining from his shoulders as he turned back to his food. "I'll figure out what I want to say to her. Thanks for the heads up. Are you gonna stay here or go back and eat with them?"

"Which would you prefer?" Ulrich shrugged, not looking inclined to move until William told him to.

"If you don't mind staying, it would be nice to not eat alone," William finally finished his salad and moved onto his reward for that, the lasagna that he'd been so excited for since the menu for the week had been announced.

"Okay," Ulrich smiled and they ate their lunches quietly.

William hummed to himself as he brought his bass to one of the music room. Some time to just play something and not think sounded good to him.

Then he heard soft guitar coming from the music room, and he sighed. He opened the door and regretted it when he saw Odd sitting on the little stage with a guitar in his lap. They stared at each other for a moment and William hesitantly stepped in.

"You mind if I sit in here and play too?" William sat in one of the comfier chairs and watched Odd as Odd shook his head.

"No, feel free," Odd shrugged and looked away. "I'm trying to figure out this song, but something about it is just… not sounding right."

William put his bass on his lap and chuckled. "Play it for me, let me see if I can help."

Odd smiled up at him and started strumming. He played for a minute before sighing. "See? It's just… it's missing something."

"I see what you mean, but I don't think it's anything you're doing wrong," William rubbed his chin. "It sounds really good, Odd, but I think you need some kind of a supporting rhythm. A steady background sound so you can have fun with it and do what you need to do, but it kind of ties the whole thing together. Play it again, lemme see what I can do."

Odd nodded and started to play it again, and William followed along, playing the same few notes in a steady pattern. Odd lit up as they played together and placed his hand on the strings to stop their sound. 

"That's it! That's what this needed!" Odd laughed. "Thank you so much, William!"

"No problem, Odd," William sighed and smiled. "So… the other day Ulrich came over and… he said you guys were all sorry? About kicking me out and treating me like that?"

Odd nodded and sighed. "Yeah. We all feel really bad. We weren't fair to you, and I'm sorry."

"Well, I don't quite want to join the group again just yet, but I'm working on it. And I want to try and be friends with you guys individually before I do that," William shrugged.

"That's fair," Odd smiled. "I'm usually in here on Tuesdays after lunch, during my free period. Wanna meet and just jam?"

William grinned and nodded. "That sounds good. I'll be here when I can. Wanna just play until next period?"

"Yeah! Maybe you can help me with the rest of the song!" Odd laughed.

"Love to," William nodded.

"Alright! For this next assignment, you'll be working in pairs!" The English teacher smiled. "I will assign your partner."

William glanced across the room at Yumi, and noticed her looking his way as well. Both quickly looked away.

"Let's see, Dunbar and… hmm, Dunbar and Ishiyama!"

William winced and grabbed his things, standing up to cross the room and sit next to Yumi as others shuffled to sit with their new partners. Both sat in an uncomfortable silence until William sighed.

"Can I apologize?" William picked at a piece of dry skin on his lip with his thumb.

Yumi looked at him in confusion. "For what? I should be apologizing to you."

"For the computer stuff, yeah, but Ulrich already took care of that," William shrugged. "I want to apologize for all the clingy jealous flirting stuff."

"Oh…" Yumi's eyes widened and she nodded slowly. "Okay."

William sighed. "I really liked you at first. A lot. But… I started going overboard when I realized how much it pissed off Ulrich, and that is…so many layers of messed up. It was really unfair to you. It… it became less about liking you and more about beating him. And that's gross. And awful. So I'm trying to step back and sort what all I've got going on inside before I even think about dating anyone. I'm not going to keep hitting on you, I'm not going to keep bickering with Ulrich, I'm just trying to take some space to regulate myself before I jump back into things."

Yumi nodded slowly and turned away, and he could see she was trying to blink back tears as she pulled her notes out.

"Thank you, William. I really needed to hear that, and I'm really glad you're going to try to be better," Yumi smiled at him weakly and he smiled back. "I'm really glad to hear you're taking some time for yourself. I am too. That much drama isn't good for you."

"Definitely not," William chuckled. "Hey, I glanced at the rubric and the assignment is on the strength of love in fiction, what if we did it on more of like… a platonic love? If we really wanted, we could do it on The Return Of The King, and kind of lead everything to Sam carrying Frodo up the volcano? Or we could go a little smaller scale and do The Wizard Of Oz and talk about Dorothy, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, and The Cowardly Lion."

"Let's do Wizard Of Oz, just because I don't want to have to read the whole series in less than a week," Yumi chuckled. "I really like that idea though."

"Cool, I think they've got at least two copies in the library," William grinned. "We can check them out when we get class time to go down."

Yumi nodded and laughed as they got their things ready to move to the library.

William hummed to himself, listening to music through one ear bud before he heard two guys in his grade laughing. This wouldn't normally be cause for concern, but he recognized those laughs and who they belonged to. And those two laughing together never meant anything good.

He turned around and made his way to where the laughter was coming from, and he grimaced when he saw who his classmates were picking on.

Jeremie looked up at William, startled, and before William had consciously made a decision, he'd sped over to get between Jeremie and the bullies.

"Leave him alone," William glared, arm out to protect Jeremie.

"Or what, Dunbar?" One of them snickered and tried to reach past him to mess with Jeremie again and William slapped his hand away.

The other bully tried to punch William, and William dodged, returning the favor, but managing to land the hit.

The three didn't have long to trade blows before Jim dragged them apart and to the principal's office, Jeremie following behind as the other two told Jim that William had started it and they hadn't been doing anything.

They told the same story to the principal, and when Delmas looked at William with a raised brow, Jeremie cleared his throat.

"Principal Delmas, William saw these two trying to mess with me and was just standing between me and them. It wasn't until they reached out towards me that he pushed their hands away and they started the fight," Jeremie inched away from the other two as they protested, and Delmas silenced them with a wave of his hand.

"William, is this true? You were just defending Jeremie and yourself?"

William nodded and Delmas sighed. "In that case, you get a lunch detention tomorrow for fighting, but you two have them through the end of next week for starting the fight."

Delmas dismissed them and William walked Jeremie to his room quietly.

"Thank you, William," Jeremie sighed. "I appreciate you stepping in to help me."

"Of course," William smiled softly. "Those guys are jerks. You okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine, thanks to you," Jeremie nodded. "I'm sorry you got a lunch detention for it."

"Worth it, to wipe those smug looks off their faces," William snickered. "I gotta get to my room, but don't go getting into any more fights, okay?"

"I'll do my best," Jeremie laughed.

"Hey, Aelita!" William smiled as he ran into the pink haired girl in the record shop. "Wouldn't expect to see you in the heavy metal section."

Aelita grinned up at him and shrugged. "I feel like my mixes are getting a little… stale. I wanted to listen to something new to get some inspiration, some new ideas, you know? I'm looking for unique stuff."

"Okay, unique…" William flicked through the cds with a thoughtful scowl, pulling out a few as he carefully went through the stacks. "I would start with these 3 albums. Anything by these bands actually is good, but these are really good albums. These two are a little more genre typical, but still phenomenal all things considered."

Aelita took the discs with a grin. "I trust your judgment. Any others you think I'd like?"

"What's your budget?" William smirked.

She laughed and shrugged. "I think one more should be good."

William nodded to himself and pursed his lips before pulling out a final album. "This is one of my favorites. It's really fun and I think you'll really like it if you like the rest of this stuff."

"Awesome!" Aelita grinned. "I can't wait to listen, and if I have any questions, I know who I'm gonna come to with them."

"I'm always down for music questions," William smiled. "And let me know which of those bands you end up liking, some are still touring, and my mom loves to bring my friends when we go to concerts."

"I'll keep that in mind!" Aelita smiled. "Thank you!"

William smiled as she headed to the front and he continued perusing the albums. They did have some new stock, but he already had most of them. But there could always be a hidden gem.

William could see the others all huddled up in Odd and Ulrich's room, playing some kind of video game, and he hesitated in the doorway.

He's been talking with all of them more, and there was still hurt there, but he was ready to call them his friends again. He knocked gently on the doorframe and cleared his throat.

"Do, uh…do you guys mind if I join in?" William bit the inside of his cheek and Odd smiled, handing him a sixth controller.

"We hoped you might come by, we would love that." Odd grinned as he and Aelita made room for William to sit between them.

William smiled as he got comfortable and looked at what they were playing.

He'd really missed this.

Code Secret Santa 2022

A/N: Hey Kaula, it's your Code Secret Santa. I hope you like it. One of your prompts was the gang getting to act like the kids they are, so here they are playing video games (with a hint of Odd/Ulrich just for you~). Timeline is post-Echoes.

Title: How to Get K.O.’d in Your Favorite Game

It was a peaceful day at Kadic Academy.

Key word: was.

Because today was the day Odd Della Robbia had gotten ahold of the television set in the rec room, and when he did, all chaos broke loose. He'd been waiting all week to play his favorite racing game with his friends after the principal had allowed video games in the rec room. And not just any racing game.

Mario Kart: Double Dash.

It was the perfect choice. Aelita had never heard of video games until she had met Odd, and this was the first one she held an interest in, and Jeremie, ever since X.A.N.A.'s defeat, had a bunch of free time now but no idea how to spend it. So, Odd had decided that he, Ulrich, and Yumi would teach the two geniuses about video games and fun (and if he owned Ulrich at the same time, well, that was just a welcome bonus).

However, it got chaotic real quick as he realized that just because this was his favorite game, he wasn't actually the best at it.

"Wha-?!" Odd's eyebrow twitched as Aelita's kart passed him just a millisecond before he crossed the finish line. "How did you-...?!"

Aelita was trying (and failing) to hide her giggles behind her hand, as the tv screen in front of them was flashing the results, showing Aelita's Yoshi and Birdo duo as the winner.

"Nice job, Aelita," Yumi said, a proud smile on her face. "Way to put Odd in his place."

"'In my place'-" The shock made Odd cut himself off mid-sentence. "What did I do?!"

"You were bragging, Odd," Ulrich reminded him, amusement clear in his voice.

"I was not bragging!"

"You said," Jeremie cut in, "and I quote, 'This is my favorite game in the entire world. No one can be better at it than me'." If you were paying close attention, you could hear him trying to stifle his chuckles.

"I'm just surprised that Aelita beat me on her first try!"

The pinkette shrugged, "What can I say? I'm a fast learner."

"And the trash talk?" Odd asked, a knowing smile on his face. "Where'd you learn that? 'Cause I'm pretty sure you didn't learn it from me."

Aelita's only response was an embarrassed smile.

"Good job, Aelita," Ulrich said. "Now, let's see if Einstein's better than Odd at this too."

"Hey!" Odd protested, as Jeremie took the controller Aelita handed to him.

"It's okay, Odd," Yumi was calm. "You don't have to be good at a game for it to be your favorite."

"She's right," Jeremie added. "There are plenty other reasons to like a game. And who knows? I may be bad."

"I wouldn't be surprised if you beat me, Einstein," Odd admitted. "You're a fast learner, too."

"You could hand the controller to someone else," Ulrich reminded him, "if you want to take a break."

"I'm fine," Odd replied. "We agreed that we'd all get a turn with everybody." His voice went soft. "And this game is my favorite because I'm getting to play it with my best buds. We're here not to win, but to have fun."

His mini-speech was met with four identical smiles filled with fondness and affection.

All five of them had worked themselves to exhaustion just to defeat X.A.N.A.. Their time fighting against the AI was filled with sleepless nights, too many excuses to skip class, many bad grades, and way too many close calls for comfort. But they did it, and it was worth it because all five of them were still here. And now, they could afford to play video games without worrying when Jeremie's laptop would go off again next.

"Aww, how sweet. Did you get that from a fortune cookie?" And then Ulrich had to ruin the moment.

"And if I did? Can't I be humble every once in a while?"

"Not when it comes to video games."

"Say that to my face, Stern!"

"I just did, Della Robbia."

Yumi cut in, "Should we give you two a room?" On her face was a knowing smirk, and Jeremie and Aelita's expressions were identical.

The two boy's faces turned red when they realized what she was insinuating, "Yumi!!"

The other three could only giggle in response.

Odd shook off his embarrassment, "Now, enough chit-chat! You're going down, Einstein!"

"We'll see about that, Walking Stomach."

"Hey!"

2022 Fic Round-Up/Reflection

Am I over a month late? Yes. Is that going to stop me? Nnnnnnope.

Another year gone and another end of year summary! Yeash, it’s been a rough creative year haha. I’ve practically done nothing but school and work, which has certainly been problematic for writing. It’s been a productive adulting year though, so hopefully this dead period will help me find more opportunities down the line. My gosh I’m ready to be done with school already.

Since I’ve really not written much this year, this will be an abridged version of my reflection from last year’s template. That being said, I’m still very rambly so you can see the details below the cut!

So Long As You're With Me (7,804): It's been several months since Team Red rescued Player from the clutches of VILE and snapped him out of their control... mostly. His base personality is back, but he still doesn't remember them from anything other than the false memories VILE created for him. And it's just their luck that VILE painted Carmen and company in such a way that Player thinks that their attempts to help him is all some elaborate form for torture, and it doesn't help that he's currently recovering from an injury she caused. Carmen is near her wit's end, but she refuses to give up on her oldest and best friend.

Still the Same (1,737): After a hunt, Sam and Dean watch the stars for the first time since Dean came back from Hell. Things are finally starting to fall back into place between them, but it's impossible to ignore the ways things have changed.

General questions:

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?

Oof, hard to answer. Definitely less than I’d hoped and maybe still a fair bit less than I expected, but I did know that my life was about to get swallowed by school and I wasn’t wrong. I definitely wish I had been able to participate in more events for sure and I’ve had a lot of inspiration for all sorts of stuff that I just haven’t had the brain power for unfortunately. What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?

I mean, looking at posting, I only have two options lol. In general though, I stuck fairly close to my norm for all that. I poked around time travel AUs which was fun but most of that was brainstorming/animatic storyboarding rather than writing.

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.

Definitely So Long As You're With Me! That AU lives in my head rent free and boy howdy I’d love to share it all one day but there’s just so much to it. I swear, the pieces I have shared are hardly recognisable as the same story haha. Anyway, it’s definitely a little rushed at some points, but it was a very crammed piece that just kept getting longer, so I’ll take it!

Okay, NOW your most popular story.

Since I’ve only posted two new works this year, we’re going to go overall. Which would definitely still be Fragmentation. It’s got 20.3k views!! That’s only 400 less than it’s total word count and it seems like the hit count keeps going up slowly, which is wild to consider it’s on FF.net in a faded fandom and has been complete for like a year. Next up would be The Problem With Good Intentions at 11k, which also blows me away a bit cause Merlin ended a decade ago but I’m proud of the fandom for staying alive! XD

Story most underappreciated by the universe?

Probably still A Letter to Never Be Read on FF.net. It’s a pretty niche fic, so I can’t really be surprised but I felt artsy writing it way back when lol.

Most overdue story?

Welp, It’s Only Natural is certainly overdue, but I don’t think anyone is really following that one so it’s not in a rush. A Long Ways Home on the other hand drives me crazy cause I’ve actually been wanting to write for it, but brainpower’s been too low from school. Can’t believe it’s been a year. :’(

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

Tbh, not really? I pushed myself in what I did, but it was all relatively in my comfort zone. I guess I tried writing in S4 of Supernatural in Still the Same, but that doesn’t feel much like a risk. I also tried out some writing from screenshot prompts which was super fun and interesting, but unfortunately that was sniped by lack of time/energy too. So I guess not really this year.

How’d this year compare to your goals of last year?

Oh boy, I’m so intimidated to read these paragraphs haha. I bet I did like none of them. We’ll start with the bullet list though since that should be fairly straightforward. -Unfortunately, prioritizing school is honestly my biggest writing goal this year. So if I do that all successfully and get through any more than like, 1-2 of these, it will be a success haha. 

-A Long Ways Home (Gonna break it up into Chapter 3, Chapter 4, and if that’s not the epilogue, then an epilogue. I’m determined and really think it’s doable, I just need to be careful not to overestimate again) WIP Bang if not done by Summer. -SPN Summergen -PAB if enough interest -February week event -Loyalties AU Plotting/Drafting -SQZ Zines -Comments

Okay, so some of those crossings are a little generous, but I wanted to at least check off the school one haha. Tbh, though, it wasn’t as bad as I expected! I did a decent job of having low expectations lol.

What are your fic writing goals for next year?

Oh boy. See I wish that this last year being so sad would mean this year would be back to creative rush, but I’m already a month in and I haven’t even tried writing anything other than school papers. I’ve been getting surprisingly into Huntlow (omg, Sakarrie having a romantic ship that she’s like legit into????? whacK), so it’d be fun to experiment with some fic there! Willow needs more angst fic to balance out our traumatized golden boi. Trying to find some zines would also be fun! And I’ll be sad if I ever have to miss Summergen cause it’s 100% my favorite event of the year. Oh, and of course I’m hoping to be able to participate more in Player Appreciation Week this coming month!! Shameless plug.

I’d also like to make some progress on A Long Ways Home, so hopefully in my Summer break I’ll finally have a chance to sit down and write. I’m not going to be dumb enough to put time frame estimations on it again though haha. I also am not a huge fan of having WIPs just sitting out there so if I could knock off It’s Only Natural sometime, that’d be great, but it’s honestly not a priority and I haven’t been feeling Voltron for a bit.

As for other plans, Loyalties AU and EverYOnE is bROkeN AU both haunt me at night and then there’s the time travel au that just has my brain zooming whenever I think about it. They just all get so intense and I WANT to share that intensity cause I know they could be epic, but first I gotta finalize the details, then I gotta have the skills to pull it off, then I gotta actually write sooooooooooooo we’ll see where those get me.

Okay so comments. Bah that project is such a mindset monster haha. I want to be supportive and express thanks to those who write and comment, but also the more pressure I put on it, the harder it gets. I feel like it makes reading new fics very intimidating and makes leaving chill comments harder. I think it would be nice to get through, but I think my goal for this year is to let my 1000 tabs go and just comment/respond in the moment whenever I can and not overthink it. I do want to catch up on replies though so that can be my comment goal for this year. In terms of my numbers, though, I did meet my generous goal of 20k written and 10k posted this year! (Rounding a little but close enough.) And I met my ultimate wc goal if brainstorming essays count!

Both drawings and writings are valid gifts!

For it to be fair tho, an art piece should at least be lined + flat colored and writings should have a minimum of 5k words aprox (it's completely fine to go over this, but not required)

A server will be made for the event with a channel where y'all can write a little description of what you like so the person that got you can refer to that to get ideas (including your aus and/or fnaf characters if you have 'em, aus you like, your favorite DCA character, even tropes or dynamics, etc.)

Bonjourrrrrrrr to all the cuties in my e address book!!!!!!! It’s been two weeks and two days since the final curtain fell in the U.S. Feels both like ages ago and yesterday. I lay around in Santa Barbara for a few days after everyone went back, complete solitude feeling bizarro after five weeks of bus life, walking along the beach deep in thought about you. I can’t get over how generous and loving and supportive an audience you were each night. I’ve honestly never had such a good touring experience. I met Annie-B for a drink in New York and she kept talking about what she called the chanting, all of you singing every word of every song with me, it isn’t normal, all my colleagues whose first tour with us it is are in disbelief like, they really know EVERY word. You do. I’m so lucky to have you. Thankyou for coming — I’ll come again as soon as you’ll have me.

In the break, my priority was to rest. Two nasty sicknesses in two weeks and a gross wet cough hanging around, had to dry it out, get better for you. I didn’t fully rest, if I’m honest, there’s a fire lit under me at the moment, did some secret things in NY and LA for a week or so before getting to London last week. I get fucked by the jet lag coming this way every time, so I decided to be nice to myself for a change and fly a week early. I got in at midday, sun shining, arrived at the hotel feeling nauseous and corpse-adjacent, but I grabbed a sugar free Red Bull (it makes no sense to me that caffeine-wise I cannot drink so much as a strong black tea yet a RB gives me jitterless wings, deeply off brand but leaning in) and got on the move, walking fast, music in my ears, feeling this fizz of excitement growing being back in London finally after 3 (!!) years. I honestly had one of the best afternoons I’ve had all year, just walking with music loud in my headphones, the same thing I’ve been doing since I was a teen, still feeling as good as it ever did. Spent days like this, blissing out on the very specific UK energy of people in pubs, people playing football or sprawling out in the parks, a boy flying past me on a bike screaming “YASS METHOD ACTING” at dusk on a Wednesday, smoked mackerel salad at Cafe Deco. So happy to be stepping over British gobs of spit once more.

Lauren gave me Shine Bright: A Very Personal History of Black Women in Pop by Danyel Smith which I’m hyped to hit next. VERY happy that Elif Batuman has released Either/Or, the follow-up to The Idiot, which you may remember me recommending previously. Suitcase is basically full of books at this point. I’m loving Kendrick. I cannot get over the most popular and influential artist in modern music displaying a working nervous system, admitting mistakes, trying to process intergenerational trauma and prejudice. I love the way the album opens, the pace and heat of the first few songs, and later Count Me Out, the build and strings in Auntie Diaries … special.

Checking in on my SCsWWtS… Look at Katia’s sunshine caprese, and Connor’s focaccia. SP as food is really a zone of great delight to me— always send these to Ophelia.
