Us vs. Them philosophy of Cobra Kai

Important points: 1.These are incomprehensible complaints of a person who is too deeply invested in a nostalgia bait comedy show about martial arts. Everything here is just my personal interpretation. 2.Spoilers for season 6 part 3 based on leaks

Cobra Kai is at its core a show about redemption and second chances. But instead of actual improvement characters for the most part just keep switching alliances and continuing with their past behavioral patterns. There are changes but a lot of them are pretty superficial. And as the series goes on simply joining Johnny’s side completely replaces actually changing for the better. Creating a constant "us" vs. "them" dichotomy that allows for less and less nuance as the show progresses.

Season 1 still remains a pretty well-conceived story where both Johnny and Daniel are portrayed as flawed individuals. And it ends with Johnny realizing that despite his best intentions Cobra Kai's “no mercy” teaching turned Miguel into a dangerous bully and Robby, his own son, has to pay a price for that. But then Kreese, the main proponent of the "us" vs. "them" worldview, shows up and the show slowly starts to lose all of the nuance. Now it's a good guys vs. bad guys story.

*SPOILERS for part 3*The main reason it bothers me so much is Kreese’s impending full blown redemption in part 3. Even Kwon’s death besides its shock  value and other plot reasons could be explained also as a tool to bring Kreese back to Johnny’s side. But there’s simply no time to explore it in any satisfying fashion in my opinion. Throughout the series we have seen glimpses of doubt in Kreese but he never actually expressed real remorse or accepted responsibility for his actions. He is always right, everyone else is simply an enemy and should be destroyed. And that is what made him interesting to me. But in the end Silver, the man Kreese actually showed mercy to once, is the series' big bad. Is there a message or is it just a tragic coincidence?

And the tools the writers use to make characters sympathetic are pretty uninventive. Who even deserves redemption in the world of Cobra Kai? A fridged woman in the character's past or present might be an indicator. Johnny’s mother Laura is used to explain his absence in Robby’s life specifically. Kreese has got dead girlfriend Betsy. Even Tory’s mother is killed in order to drive her back to Cobra Kai. Her death is the first time we see her face. Silver has none so we know he is a truly evil guy.

And in the case of the younger generation it also looks strange to me how for example Hawk’s change is him stopping beating people to a pulp and that’s it. He was still into attacking Kenny, a middle schooler, because of the Cobra Kai merch but since Hawk is in Miyagi-do now so that’s fine. Tory’s home invading days are truly in the past but she changed so much since season 5 I barely recognise her. Instead of actually making up for her past mistakes she’s simply dragged through hell by the narrative itself which in my opinion is both unnecessary and hard to watch. Is it really a character growth or writers’ desire to file off all of her unpleasant traits in order to make her more likeable?

But those are pretty far-fetched points. What really bothers me is Kyler’s episode. At first I didn’t view it as a redemption one because Kyler hasn’t changed at all. Yes, Miguel and others helped him with his own bully situation but it looked to me like Miguel would simply provide help to anyone who needed it. It just happened to be Kyler ironically. But in the light of Kreese’s redemption doesn’t it look more like “yeah, he is an asshole but he's our asshole” so they had to help him. Enemy of my enemy is my friend kind of situation similar to teaming up with Kreese to defeat Silver. Which further adds to "us" vs. "them" worldview of the show that doesn’t allow for any half measures. It just expands to include assholes like Kyler into the "us" category. I actually enjoy Kreese as a character for the most part. He has depth and people could sympathize with him. His therapy scene is one of the best in the series in my opinion. But the show spent so much time building him and Cobra Kai into absolute villains that the sudden 180 doesn't feel deserved at this point at least to me. Maybe I am just an alarmist and this interpretation is stretching it too far. No one in the writers room certainly has thought about how it all might look for some viewers. But coupled with the creators obvious favouritism towards everything Cobra Kai over Miyagi-do it concerns me. Are we supposed to root for our protagonists simply for the fact that they are the protagonists without questioning their actions and alliances?

I think sadly, the most we've seen Daniel say to Anthony since he was littler and just sort of ignored Daniel or tried to order out his needs.

But it's not on purpose and the way you've been responding to losing at basketball or not having all of Lia's attention is not cool. And you curbing to peer pressure is on you. Messing around and name calling is what your 'friends' are doing to you, not what Kenny is doing to you.

Poor Miguel getting side lined again.

Johnny has tied the kids arms to their sides, in case cobra kai pops their shoulder out and they have to fight one handed.

I would like to point out he's talking about cheating and playing dirty and he got this idea because Daniel immobilized his arm with his secret pressure points.

Like I get that Daniel thinks his way is the best way to prep against Silver, but if they'd talked and Daniel had told him of all the Silver moves he knew, Johnny would've built lessons about ways to defend against it. Because he's literally trying to ensure they stay in the game and don't panic if they get injured like he did. Which he's been doing since the beginning by showing pretty much all his students at some point how to get out of a choke-hold.

It also sucks though, now that Johnny has one from Kreese and one from Daniel on that list because Daniel went too far and used the pressure points against him. It's a good lesson but it shouldn't have been inspired the way it was.

Johnny's used literally everything he can think of, ducttape on Mitch, rope on another kid, what looks like bungy cord on another. I dunno I feel like prepping them against cheating is so smart. I think he seran wrapped Bert. 🤣

I would say Johnny being careful with Miguel is probably related to Miguel's injury, but that hair ruffle in front of the class is totally because Johnny's told Miguel he's dating his mom.

One of the kids throws sand in Mitch's eyes. Which ow, and also dangerous. Johnny that could've been accomplished with a blindfold. But use the other senses because you've been blinded, without meaning too defends against one of SIlver's moves, to blind your opponent. For that one Miguel just held a box of sand.

Oh, I don't think having Devon kick all the guys in the balls is the way to go there Johnny. Even if Daniel used a ball-shot move he learned from Mr. Miyagi in TKK2. Miguel you gotta admit, not being in this one is probably for the best.

Johnny should've ensured they were all wearing protective gear first. Which is not...very him. (I'm going to blame netflix here) because while he put the kids in danger and it didn't always seem safe i.e. the junkyard with the dogs. He still ensured they had protective gear when doing stuff like breaking glass.

Like everyone giggling about Silver picking Kenny might make sense, but Silver totally scammed Kreese with his whole double or nothing. He literally knows that Robby's weakness would be his little buddy he's taken under his wing. Which is the whole point of the lesson.

And he proves it when Robby goes woah woah woah are you okay and Kreese has to call pause.

I do like that despite winning Kenny and Robby still do a little fist bump after their fight, like no hard feelings there despite Kenny tricking Robby by feigning injury.

I dunno Johnny you shouldn't put all the kids but Miguel through the ringer and then say 'champ we've got family dinner'. It's uncool and you should know that it could cause division or seem like you're playing favorites.

Also Johnny just leaves Miguel. Are you seriously leaving Miguel who as far as we know doesn't have his own car or license yet, at an abandoned factory?

The taskrabbit Anthony called is named Artie, whose cat needs hernia surgery so this is his side hustle, and Daniel has tons of Glacier freeze gatorade but no lemon lime.

Daniel I'm surprised you let your credit card or any financial info anywhere near something Anthony has access to after he tried to alexa order something and you struggled to cancel it.

Anthony's response to this is that he knows, which makes me wonder if Daniel and Amanda pay so little attention to him that he feels like he does most things on his own and thus accomplishes everything on his own.

See that works on Sam because she met him but Anthony didn't so he doesn't care.

Mr. Miyagi taught sam the wax on wax off first move. Anthony gets he's a great ma and he taught Daniel karate. And he's heard all the stories and he's sick of it.

Daniel asks if that means he doesn't want to learn how to defend himself or learn skills for life and Anthony responds not if it means cleaning up bird shit to which Daniel rebukes him for language. then essentially says he thought Anthony was mature enough for this and walks away and tells Anthony to just go back to his video games.

Which, Daniel you fucked up here. Anthony never got to meet Mr. Miyagi that he remembered. So he's just hearing the whole family bond about this guy he doesn't know and it's isolating because he's got nothing to draw on to add to it. Anthony knows all the stories, he knows all about Mr. Miyagi, but do you know anything about Anthony beyond video games? Do you even know what video games he likes to play? Because you bought him kitkats from Japan and that's it. You're just not...listening. You're pissed because in your head he disrespected Mr. Miyagi. And didn't listen to the core of it. Which is there is no Miyagi magic for him and instead his whole life he's been living in the shadow of a man he doesn't know and getting teased because he should know the moves.

Also, I think if Johnny was still there, it'd suck because his training is always hard, but that Anthony would enjoy it more.

normally i tend to think whatevers in the middle of the table is the main course, but that's tomato, red onion and avocado and nothing else.

johnny is not good balancing between Miguel and Carmen.

I think what's happening is Johnny is trying so hard to not be Sid that he doesn't know what to do. Carmen literally moves later like she's going to just eat the tomato, onion and avocado as a meal/salad.

The way Anthony immediately starts apologizing for being in the dojo is kinda telling of his not so great relationship with his father. Like he found something that sparked his interest in karate but then immediately panics as soon as Daniel asks what he's doing.

Like Daniel even says he doesn't need to apologize, but Anthony just doesn't seem to know him well enough that he thinks he's doing something wrong.

Is this the pressure point lesson?

Because if it is, what Daniel says related to it is wild.

If it is in fact pressure points then Daniel you've already used it twice, once to save Johnny's life and stop Kreese and once to try and win an argument with Johnny.

I am glad Anthony is talking about how he feels sort of left out because he doesn't have any memories of Mr. Miyagi.

I also feel like this is a long time coming, Daniel needed to have this conversation with Anthony ages ago. A chance to tell him not stories about himself and Mr. Miyagi or Sam and Mr. Miyagi, the stories he knows all about, but you missed telling Anthony about his own story with Mr. Miyagi. "Mr. Miyagi wanted to hold him and as soon as Anthony was in his arms, Anthony kicked him in the face."

Mr. Miyagi apparently just laughed and said Anthony was going to be handful but would also be a protector of the family.

Since when? Also you, not wanting to pressure someone into doing what they don't want to do? Dude. You do that all the time. You tried to pressure all the students into learning just Miyagi-do which broke up the combined dojo.

Junior Prom theme his Hollywood Heights, which feels a bit like phoning it in since they're in LA.

Johnny really does have some honesty and reveals a lot about himself when people are willing to listen.

He's trying so hard not to be the people in his life that abandoned him or gave up when he didn't do exactly what they wanted when he knew it was wrong.

He says he can never fix that. 😭

But he doesn't want to make that mistake with Miguel, he just doesn't know what to do or how to do this. he says he clearly doesn't know what the hell he's doing.

Prompt: Wildcard

Friendships: Demetri & Miguel & Eli (ft. Sam & Yasmine)

So I saw this week's prompt, and all I could think of was the IASIP episode where they try to sell gas door-to-door XD CW for pretty explicit sexual mentions that were...pretty inevitable, considering the source material XD Also CW for some (lighthearted) sexism, although it's kinda played for comedy/absurdity.

This a 6-parter--600 words total! Takes place in S4 or S5, when the entirety of the OG loser trio are fighting against Cobra Kai.

“As the brains of this operation, I think—”

“You’re the brains?” Miguel sounds a little heartbroken. “I thought I was the brains.”

“No, no, you’re the looks!”

“So…I’m not smart?” Miguel looks even more crushed.

“It’s not that!” Demetri gestures frantically, trying to salvage the situation. “You’re the looks, I’m the brains, Eli’s the wildcard.”

“I’m the wildcard?” Eli lights up. “That’s fucking awesome!”

“It’s the iconic formula, right?” Demetri grins. “Can’t fail with it. The Scooby Gang never did!”

“So…by not playing into that dynamic, we’re limiting our potential?” Miguel looks intrigued.

“Exactly. Can’t mess with a classic.”

“So Cobra Kai’s plowing us in the ass, right?”

Miguel’s dubious. “Don’t know if I’d put it like that—”

“Their stupid merchandise! Their flashy ads!” Demetri scoffs. “They’re ruining our lives with their synchronized kicks and their rotten ass-plowing hearts! As the brains, I’ve concocted a plan that involves oiling our asses and doing a little plowing of our own.”

His accompanying gestures are met with concern.

“Not gay sex,” he clarifies.

“Oh, good! I was sorta worried.” Eli sounds almost insultingly relieved. “What did you mean?”

“Gentlemen…” Demetri smirks. “We’re going to sell more merch than Cobra Kai.”

“We’ll need a bank loan to order and print the merchandise. I’ll spin the proposal to sound sensible, and Miguel’ll sit there looking pretty…and possibly providing sad puppy-dog eyes if needed.”

“This plan sucks.” Eli scowls. “I don’t get to do anything!”

“Untrue!” Demetri retorts. “You’re the wildcard—you sit there looking unhinged. Like you could snap should our proposal be rejected.”

“Like this?”

Although Demetri appreciates Eli’s reluctance to re-awaken The Hawk, a little pout isn’t very wildcard-esque.

“Pretend the bank left Miyagi-Fang a bad Yelp review. You’re plotting revenge.”

Ah. There’s that slasher smile.

“That I can do.”

As Miguel presses the gas, his eyes flick between Demetri and Eli.

“What the hell happened?”

“Eli tried showcasing the merch with karate moves, and we kicked our first potential customer in the face. She called the cops.”

Miguel groans.

“Demetri, you said this plan was flawless.”

“Hey! I did exactly what a wildcard would do!” Eli protests.

Miguel sighs. “So Demetri as the brains isn’t working, so I’ll be the brains and Demetri can be the muscle.”

Despite himself, Demetri blushes.

“You…think I could be the muscle?”

“Yes, sure, if it means I make the plans from now on.”

“Don’t you see? That’s why the plans weren’t working! We were operating on an incomplete crew!”

Miguel gestures frantically at Sam and Yasmine, whom the boys have doggedly hunted down in Forever 21. When Miguel unexpectedly changed course to the Valley mall, all Demetri and Eli could do was confusedly follow their new leader.

“Sam’s the muscle,” Miguel explains. “I’m the looks, Demetri’s the brains, Hawk’s the wildcard. It’s a full set!”

“You’re going to steal my only shopping buddy?” Yasmine complains. “Moon’s in the Maldives all week!”

“Come along!” Demetri says brightly. “We still need a Token Useless Chick!”

Demetri loves being the brains again.

“Sam, once we kidnap Kyler, beat him up until he confesses to some Cobra Kai felony.”

“My pleasure.”

“Miguel, use your puppy-dog eyes and sweet-talk the cops into giving us reward money for turning Kyler in.”

“Yasmine, continue being useless and complaining about everything.”

“Ugh.”

“Reward money goes toward making merch, and—hey, what’s with the brakes?”

“I CUT THE BRAKES!”

Eli’s shriek fills the car.

“WILDCARD, BITCHES!”
