dressed elegantly. this will never leave my head. the implications of this.

because geralt and his company, they saddled up, left beauclair, travelled through mountains and frozen blizzards and downpours and muddy sod for two to three months. you need to pack outfits for that. you need to plan your gear.

what was the rest of the company wearing? what did they pack for this long journey? they packed practically, dressed warmly for the frozen journey of january, february, march. geralt wore a wolf-skin cloak, a scarf, a shawl… milva wore a fox-fur kalpak, angoulême wore a hat with a pompom and a sheepskin coat. cahir’s dress isn’t mentioned, but he must have been dressed similarly, because he rubs his hands briskly together and were he not dressed warmly he otherwise would have frozen to death. regis’ dress isn’t mentioned, but it is mentioned that he’s immune to the freezing temperature. so, i mean, it doesn’t matter what he’s wearing in this scene, maybe a regular outfit.

but at stygga. dressed elegantly.

so you’re telling me that. regis packed his things in preparation for their flight from beauclair, went to his quarters after geralt explained to him the satisfactory reasons they were leaving, and went,

“alright, time to prepare for this long and dangerous journey that will conclude in a great clash between our forces and the kidnappers of ciri. the end of our quest. the final journey. and a dangerous road awaits us, with snow still blocking the passes, frost and white all around. a grand fight and conflict awaits us. what gear should i prepare, what should i wear for this expedition, what kinds of clothing should i pack.”

and then he went:

“you know, i want to look fucking good ✨ when we get there 💅🏻🦇”

imagine the final preparation before they approach castle stygga. geralt sees the castle hewn out of the cliffside, effortlessly noticing every detail from far away, seeing like an eagle with his mutated eyes. and like an eagle, compelled to swoop down and snatch vilgefortz like a fish. ordering the company forward, declaring they’ve made it. this is the moment they have all been waiting for. everyone has been waiting such a long time for this. they prepared everything.

they wait until midnight. angoulême eagerly unsheathes and whets her long sabre, swings her axe around with predatory glee. cahir fits the plate armor and winged officer’s helmet he scavenged from a small nilfgaardian dispatch that they ran into extorting caravista for tax. milva tightens the same worn, polished leather bracer that she’s always had on her left arm, and mutters as she fixes her spiralled arrow fletchings over boiling water. geralt, with nothing left to do, paces and breathes, wondering where the hell regis has gone.

just then, regis walks out from behind an outcropping of rock, eyes glinting with cat-like light, in his “elegant” outfit, absolutely slaying that shit, and all his friends look at him absently like. “what the hell are you wearing. where the fuck did you get that. you packed that? you planned your outfit for the final battle, you planned this outfit in advance three months ago?” to which he counters, “well, three months isn’t very long at all,” and they’re like, “this is the preparation you made? we thought you left to do some secret vampire rituals or whatever. or to reckon with yourself for the severe violence we’re about to inflict.” and he’s like “no, i just wanted to make sure i was dressed nicely for the occasion”

Staircase Spirit in 2024

Hi, Denise here to look back on all the articles Rosy and I shared on Staircase Spirit during 2024 and to look ahead a bit at 2025!

Detective Conan Anime Reviews:

We did two big articles about Detective Conan this year - the first one covered the second movie, The Fourteenth Target, which is definitely at or near the top of the short-list of our favorite Detective Conan movies. It was fun to gush about what we love about this movie, and also fun to think about how we would have handled dubbing the Japanese-language number-pun-name clues if we were the ones in charge of an English localization.

We also reviewed a big chunk of episodes for our Detective Conan Anime Review Part 8, covering Episode 98 through 123 and bringing us through to the end of the episodes that were dubbed by Funimation.

To give the Funimation dub episodes a proper send-off, we made a reel of our favorite moments, which is included as a video within the article itself (with soft-subs), and also shared stand-alone on Tumblr here (with hard-subs). I am maybe putting too much emphasis on the subtitles, but transcribing and timing them took about as long as assembling the video clips themselves, so let me indulge. XD

Looking ahead to 2025, we are almost done with the next chunk of episodes for Part 9, which includes the introduction of Haibara. We're really excited for that, so hold on to your baseball caps that will absolutely conceal your identity during televised soccer matches hats!

We also are considering spinning off our Detective Conan reviews from Staircase Spirit and giving them their own site, and perhaps restructuring the way they are released. We want to sometimes be able to share one episode at a time if we want, but also have chunks when it's appropriate, and maybe interweave some other discussion, and have a flow of reading, but also let it be more modularized, and have a lot more complicated tagging system and -- yeah, it's incubating. I'm going to be doing some behind the scenes stuff to make sure our Stairwell system can handle everything we would want, and Rosy is going to explore what the layout will be, but right now we fear our biggest barrier might be... deciding on the title of the site! HELP!

In the meanwhile, we'll keep putting our reviews together the same way we have been, no holding back!

Pokemon Movie Reviews:

After whatever fluke happened in 2023, this year we did indeed write stuff about Pokemon. First off, we released what I hope will be the first part of a series on Copy Cat where we review Mewtwo Strikes Back scene by scene. And we already had so much to say about the first two minutes of the movie!

The next piece in this series is another one that is almost done. Look out for it, it will get us another... thirty seconds further into the movie... XD

Setting our endless discussion of Mewtwo Strikes Back aside, we also continued reviewing the Pokemon movies that are after the first one. We're up to Number 13, the so-called Zoroark movie, even though the real spotlight is on Zorua, co-starring Celebi, and also the shiny Legendary Beast are there too, and actually, what this really all about is a man who uses vision powers to make money at the stock market. We liked this movie a lot.

Next up will be movie number 14, the double-dipping Victini movie, and I am really excited for what we have in the works for that one.

And last but not least, Oblivion:

We were actually in the process of writing a bit about the Assassin's Guild questline, when we realized, there sure are a lot of inns in Cyrodiil. And even though there's not really an in-game push to visit most of them, they are all fully-fleshed locations, with different furnishings and amenities and rates... So we set out to review them! We'll help you plan your next trip around Cyrodiil, and you'll see which inn is the absolute best!

So, yeah, we hope you enjoyed our articles from 2024 and look forward to what we do in 2025!
