CLIFFORD JORDAN, Toronto 1988
Clifford Jordan Jr. was born in Chicago in 1931 and began his recording career at the heart of hard bop, releasing his first record, Blowing in from Chicago (co-leading the session with fellow Chicagoan John Gilmore) on Blue Note Records in 1957. He played tenor sax (and occasionally alto) on records by Lee Morgan, Max Roach Art Farmer, Eric Dolphy, Charles Mingus and Cedar Walton among many others. By the time I saw him perform in Toronto in 1988, he seemed among the last of a race of giants, and I photographed him accordingly.

I'm pretty sure I was introduced to Clifford Jordan by my friends Jane Bunnett and Larry Cramer, and though I was without a client I talked my way into a portrait shoot when he came through town, playing at East 85th, a long-defunct jazz club on the downtown east side here in Toronto. The club was famously dark - it was a real challenge to photograph acts there live - and my shots are unsurprisingly murky; I doubt if I was able to produce anything as satisfactory as these live photos back in the day given my limited darkroom skills.

I can't remember if I did my portrait shoot with Clifford Jordan during soundcheck or after his show - it's been over 35 years since I took these pics and memories get vaguer all the time. I do know that I set up my single light - a flash bounced into an umbrella - on the stage at the club, up high and angling down on Jordan. While I always had the photos of Francis Wolff for Blue Note in my head when I did shoots like this, at least one of these pics has a real "chairman of the board" vibe. I remember being pleased with at least one of my portraits of Jordan, but don't recall having anywhere to publish these photos until I posted them on my old blog a few years ago. Clifford Jordan died in 1993 in New York City at 61 - just a year older than I am this month.

Wilbur Ware: The Bass Virtuoso Who Defined a Jazz Era
Introduction: Wilbur Ware was one of the most remarkable jazz bassists of his time. Though often understated in the history of jazz, his contributions to the genre have left a lasting impact on generations of musicians and listeners. Known for his unconventional playing style, rhythmic innovations, and the deep, resonant sound he coaxed from his instrument, Ware was a true original who left his…
