How do you get the chickens to be so cuddly?

I raised Beeper from a young age and Sugar is from my breeding program where I select for a friendly disposition. Best way to a chickens heart is through food though they are very intelligent and can be trained just like a cat or dog. While it is easier to socialize and handle them when they are young but that doesnt mean its impossible for an older chicken to become just as cuddly as Beeper. Some things to keep in mind if you want lap chickens

Chicks that are shipped to you, or bought from a hatchery or farm store have experienced a lot of stress and trauma before entering your home. Hatching at a hatchery and getting shipped right after you hatch is not a great start for a young chicken's brain so they are going to be more prone to being skittish. Please treat them with kindness and be gentler with them, they are fresh to this world and just had a scary experience.

You want young chickens to see you as a mother figure or a member of their flock so you should treat them like a mother hen/flock member would. Keep them warm, cuddle them, show them how to be a chicken, and give them tasty treats. You dont want to cuddle them to much though, there is nothing bad that will happen to the chicken but imprinted chicks can be pretty incessant with wanting to be around you at this age lol, dont worry though they do usually grow out of constant crying for you.

With taming older chickens its important to remember that they are social animals and they love routine. Having a set schedule where you tend to your birds is a great way to establish a solid positive association. If you also bring some high priority treats with you every time even better. You then want to sit on the ground with them and offer them more treats, you will gradually bring your handful of treats closer to your body intill the birds have to touch you. At this time the birds who are more inclined to be your friend will start to be obvious as they will be the first to greet you and will be more comfortable touching you. Its important you dont suddenly grab at bird during bonding time as that can break their trust, you want to try gently and slowly stroking them and go from there. This also works for skittish younger chicks as well if you have a reason to be more hands off.

Even birds who will never like handling can still be trained with something like a clicker, i would say that most chickens find training to be enriching and positive as long as its a treat that they like.

today was pretty okay!

woke up and it was done. guess that was his answer to sunday. if he left me over something as trivial as that AND without communicating, then its obvious that going through with any kind of talk or even any kind of relationship with him would’ve been pointless.

anyways, i have to give oscar medicine 2 times a day now. one of them i mix with his food and the other i have you syringe into his mouth. poor baby, it probably tastes soo bad. i’m really happy though because he’s back to his old self c: i missed his sweet affection.

i also ordered a wig today. It is long and purple and curly. i think its rly cute but i think it might look weird on me. its ok tho it was rlly cheap esp how its made out of silk! usually those are like 100+ dolars! and i got it for like 23 bucks! yayyyyy

house treats a dog trainer who says she has a 100% success rate for helping angry dogs and make them quiet and nice. house argues about how it cant be exactly 100% and wont stop being annoying about it. He brings in a literally feral rabid dog and she like makes it calm and lie down . House is disturbed by this because he wanted to be right that she sucks at stuff. Update after 1 month of Coco being here

I didn't expect her to be this cuddly? When she's not tired she's mostly still not seeking out cuddles, but if she is, then she's immediately coming up for snuggles and ENJOYS them a lot. Lays sometimes on my chest/neck/almost face, to the point I can barely breathe. Often meows at me before laying on me, too.

Besides that, she's still the sweetest independent princess. Even when wanting to be alone she's staying near one, but just wants her personal space. Didn't expect that too of her tbh cause she always fled from her littermates and mom, but she's kinda clingy with all of us.

Did I ever mention she sits on me when I sleep sideways? Apparently my shoulders are very comfy.

Grooms herself so loudly that she is always waking me up.

Has a bad attention span and can't focus on a toy for more than 2 minutes, especially on her own. Playing with her works mostly better but not always. Only if the toy is new.

Dislikes most soft textures? She doesn't acknowledge her own little bed, blankets (she likes to get them put on her, but she always prevents having to walk on any), pillows, anything cuddly tbh, but loves cardboard and other rough textures.

Doesn't really seek out warm places!? Often prefers cold areas. I'm confused about that cause they're originally desert animals and I always knew cats that love it as warm as possible?

Got used to living here cause she's seeking out a few more sleeping places than the bed only, she's getting comfy at more locations.

Plays hide and seek & tag T_T it's the most adorable thing I've ever witnessed in my life.

Her agility improved soo much, she's so extremely fast and more confident when climbing.

Started chewing on cables, oh boy... She doesn't scratch any furniture or walls, but she's still obsessed and goes haywire (ha) with anything stringy. At least I got to do cable management bc of her.

When I try to distract her to not chew on cables, she'd rather chew on the cables than play. No distraction ever works, so they have to be hidden.

She also doesnt't (want) to listen, the vet said that clicker training would work, well? we tried it out and it's just not... working. She knows she's going to get a treat after listening to "no", so she does stuff she isn't supposed to, listens shortly, until she gets a treat and then repeats the process a few times. But she's also a cat, so I am not surprised she's not immediately supposed to know everything. She doesn't ever do anything maliciously, as she doesnt get aggressive, so I'm unsure whether she's very clever or actually possesses only 3 braincells and is forgetful.

Speaking of never getting aggressive, she never once hissed yet. The worst she tried was a gentle nibble, but usually she flees stressful situations.

Most stressful situations for her so far have been my noisy relatives, and the telephone ringing. She got used to the vacuum cleaner really fast.

Food is everything for her and she tries everything possible to get it. Meows like crazy when she wanna get treats, too.

Giving her deworming pills was more than easy cause they got hidden under food and she just... devoured it.

Once she went to her toilet, then she heard that we prepared food for her, RAN towards the noise as if a lion was chasing her and left a poop in the way... she didn't finish going to toilet bc of utter excitement, just did it while running lmao. Sounds worse than it is tbh, was pretty cute to see her THAT excited (besides the cleaning up part ofc)

Clipping her nails works really good when she's tired, I read to give cats treat rewards for each nail so they know it's positive. For her it doesn't work, she gets feral after a treat and afterwards it's not possible to clip them cause she's so hyper and immediately awake after getting something to eat. So everytime I need to brush her or clip her nails, it's not needed to give her a treat. She's fine with almost everything the moment she's tired.

Very very curious, has to discover EVERYTHING. What is extra cute is, that she likes when people clean here, change sheets, etc... She always sits beside and watches.

Often scream-meows when leaving her alone, sometimes even when it's only for a few minutes. Poor baby waits at the door and meows and meows. ;_; If she realizes it takes a bit more to come back, she goes back to sleeping.

Once one scary moment happened, it sounded like someone got shot outside and we all just panicked a little. Coco seemed to notice, as she went person to person, purred, and afterwards laid on her back, showing off her stomach. She is truly sweet, I really think she tried to calm us.

Gave her save plants to eat and she absolutely destroyed them. She only tried a little bit to eat them, but she plucked like 70% of the leaves and played with them instead.

Also already reacts to catnip? I thought kittens usually don't, but she does. She just rolls around on her back then lol.

Conclusion:

she's a kitten, ofc I expected her to be a bit stressful, but every moment has been 100% worth it so far and I can't adore her more cause all good moments outdo anything negative 🤍

hello! i have a question that i couldnt find a straightforward answer for quite some time now and maybe you could help me. ive had a corn snake for about 9 years now and only recently he started to have a very strong feeding response. he even almost reached my face recently and overall sometimes seems to be more interested in me than the thawed mice i give him. i do know that me not handling him often (i am pretty busy bc of college) can be the main reason here + usually feeding him later in the day which builds a routine. overall hes very aloof and calm and doesnt mind being handled (hes even fine with having his head touched), but i dont want the feeding sessions to always go like this. do you know how i can make him unlearn that behavior? i do know that handling him more often can help, but maybe i should be taking him out of his tank for feeding?

Hello hello - sorry to hear about the problems you've been having, that's no fun at all (although it's good your boy's such a good eater!).

I definitely don't recommend taking him out of his tank for feeding, it won't help and is only more likely to make him associate your hand with food.

A few tips:

- Hook training might help a ton here. The gist of it is you just tap the snake with the snake hook before removing them for handling, and the snake then associates a tap with the hook with handling time. I use hook training with a lot of my snakes with the strongest feeding responses, and if you're consistent, a tap with the hook will soon be all they need to snap right out of feeding mode.

- Clicker training might also work well. Basically, just use a clicker (or a few clicks of the feeding tongs) immediately before feeding, and the snake will come to not expect food until he hears the clicks.

- You might try varying how you've been feeding him. If you drop feed, try tong feeding, and if you tong feed, try drop feeding. A break in routine might help lessen his feeding response because he'll have to put more thought into it.

- And you already know this, of course, but more frequent handling will likely be the biggest thing that'll help out here.
