I Dropped In to WFMU for a Guest DJ Set!

Hey, all you ear-starved trash punks! The all great and knowing radio deity that is @wfmu (DJ Frank Caira, specifically) recently invited me to come on and spin some tunes for an episode of their Drop-In show on Rock'n'Soul Radio.

With this DJ set -- dubbed "Urbane Renewal" (after an unused Death of Samantha album title) -- I whipped up with a mini-history of the local latter-1980s Cleveland underground scene that turned me into a musical miscreant!

It was my first time DJing on WFMU (New Bomb Turks played on it live years ago), and it was quite an honor!

interrupting the great setup and punchline, but my only reference (as someone who has lived in many parts of the US) for ohio is this:

always blows my mind as a european when people talk about states like “yeah theres nothing in ohio/montana/wyoming/etc” because i look at a map like but. but theyre so big. every state could qualify as its own country what do you mean theres nothing there. and then i ask people from those states and theyre like “yeah theres nothing here” what do you mean theres nothing there!!!

This band is The Tellers, a great, cranked-up, trash pop-ish band from Cleveland, circa 1997-2002 or so. They made one bofo LP and another CD mini-LP that went a bit more glam with a few new members before they flamed out. Don’t think they ever played outta town much.

New Bomb Turks played with them at the old Grog Shop on the east side of Cleveland in, I think, 1999, and they were great. I’ve since periodically bothered the singer — a lovely person who is now a happily married mom — about trying to figure out a way to do a proper expanded reissue of their extremely limited-pressed album, which was untitled and didn’t even have song titles on it.
