Alan Alda: [in conversation about the social evolution of words] which reminds me of the singular "they," which everybody is needing to get a little more familiar with, and more accepting of. You say a very interesting thing about how some of us have trouble accepting that "they went into a store and had a soda," where we're talking about "Mary went into a store and had a soda," you're talking about one person. But originally - or a long time ago - we said "thee" and "thou" and changed it to "you," which is- which was plural, and we don't have a problem with my talking to you and calling you "you," I don't need to call you "thou." And I don't say, "you is," I say "you are."

Valerie Friedland: I think it's really funny because if we look back 300 years - which often we don't do, and that's why we hate the things we say today - we could find the same kinds of complaints about using you as we can find using singular they today. So grammarians like Robert Lowth and Lindley Murray would complain about how it was ungrammatical to use "you" as a singular. and not only that but most people don't realize that "you" is actually objective case and not nominative case, which means in plain English it's not meant to be used for subjects at all, it's supposed to be used for objects.

"Ye" is actually a subject case. So when you had a subject saying "you did this," it would be "ye did this." Not only did we move "you" to the subject position, we also started making what was once plural, singular. and then to top it off we started using plural verbs with it. All of this happened before any of us were born, so all of us do it without any problems today. Singular "they" is essentially the same sort of shift, pronouns have always changed over time - in fact "they" is not the original one in English either, it was brought it in by the Vikings -- so now it's just a matter of getting used to this grammatical shift, because a lot of the time in our grammar in our head we have it linked to being plural. And so it's just a matter of adjusting our knowledge to say " oh it's actually also singular." Now I can use a plural verb and it's going to be like "you," and take a plural verb whether I'm talking about one "they" or two "theys."

Also I am. Constantly forgetting how fucking funny Hunter is. We never give him enough credit for how funny he is because his life is so fucked up but I swear 90% of his lines are just bit after bit after bit. He's not even trying either. Anytime he actively tries to make a joke it falls flat but if you just put him in a Scenario he'll find a way to be so over invested and yet out of touch/at odds with whatever's going on. fic where atsushi is trapped in some machine using his ability and power to power up to destroy the world or something idk, essentially he's kidnapped and being used as a human battery and he's like stuck in a void, just staring blankly at nothing and the ada r rescuing him but uh oh they have to fight all the evil henchmen and atsushi is slowly becoming part of the machine until akutagawa (who's there from the task force mori sent per alliance) calls out 'damn it atsushi, you better not die' even tho he's not even close to atsushi yet, but atsushi hears him and then suddenly atsushi can hear everyone --- he hears kyouka vow to herself that she'll save atsushi, he hears junichiro ask him to hold on a little longer, kunikida urging him to continue fighting, fukuzawa saying that they won't leave him behind ---- and no one's in the room where he's being sucked into the machine, nor do they know that he can hear them, but he can and suddenly there's a shadow of a light in his eyes as the ada and allies continue to fight to reach him (or reach dazai to him to nullify or whatever) and atsushi hears everyone calling his name and then dazai finally gets to him and his worry starts to melt and he chuckles as he walks to atsushi, hands raised to catch him as atsushi continues to fight his way out of the machine and says 'atsushi-kun has been fighting so hard, hasn't he? come on now, let's go back' just as atsushi pushes himself out and passes out just in time for dazai to catch him

a really uhhh Amusing coincidence has happened (i feel bad finding it funny but like also cmon) . so the magnus protocol started releasing (and i started listening) around the same time a new girl started working at my job, give or take. this new girl's name was gwen, and we got along pretty alright . we were both invited to a "girl's night" by another coworker, had a few shifts together, made small talk, etc. i didn't know her well.

but anyways im listening to the magnus protocol and i try to imagine the characters in my head. i dont really have super solid ideas of what most of them look like, all of them are kind of nebulous combinations of the various designs i'd seen online at the time. but for some reason that baffled me in the moment, gwen bouchard was really really vivid to me. and she didn't look in my head like any of the designs for her i'd seen online either, this was fully a Me Original here.

and like at some point i realize, probably after coming in to work and seeing coworker gwen after listening to a tmagp episode on the drive minutes before, that Ohhhhh. Ohhhh magnus gwen looks like coworker gwen to me okay thats whyyyy

anyways this is funny in an ironic way because coworker gwen has been taken off the schedule/soft fired because she was consistently not showing up to work without warning, in some cases even after specifically saying that she intends to show up the day before and then bailing with zero communication to anyone and i think magnus protocol gwen would probably pop a vein if she had to manage coworker gwen LMAO

(i do feel a bit bad for my coworker though. idk what her reasons for bailing were n all and i sympathize. but on the other hand i certainly didnt appreciate being on shift on saturday mornings at a coffee shop while we were short a person during rush hours so hopefully whoever takes her spot on the schedule will be more consistent ;-;)
