Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu and Assembly of First Nations National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak are urging MPs across party lines to support legislation to ensure First Nations have clean drinking water in their communities. The government has put forward a bill that seeks to do just that, and also seeks to protect source-water on First Nations territories. Hajdu has called it the first piece of truly co-developed legislation between Canada and First Nations — even though some First Nations disagree with that framing. The bill has been before a House of Commons committee for months, where MPs have heard chiefs and experts raise concerns that the legislation does not go far enough to protect their rights. They also question how robust it will be in ensuring their communities receive adequate funding to maintain and operate water treatment plants.

The World is Running Out of Water
The world is "running out of water," Makasa Looking Horse says, and if we don't take action soon, it will be too late. Looking Horse, from Six Nations of the Grand River in Ontario, Canada, is one of the hosts of the Ohneganos Ohnegahdę:gyo -- Let's Talk about Water podcast, which won a 2021 David Suzuki Foundation Future Ground Prize. The prize recognizes youth-led movements. It's a podcast created, the Suzuki Foundation says, to "engage Indigenous communities and disseminate research findings by facilitating meaningful discussion about water issues and climate change."
Looking Horse points to Aberfoyle, Ontario, where BlueTriton Brands, Inc., an American beverage company based in Connecticut, has permits to take 3.6 million litres of water a day out of an aquifer there. BlueTriton is the new name of the giant corporation better known as Nestlé Waters North America. The name was changed to BlueTriton Brands in 2021.
She says "they're making millions off our water and selling it. And the thing about aquifer waters that it takes 6,000 to 10,000 years for that water to filter through the ground. We'll never see that water within our lifetime again and that's why it's so important that we stop water extraction."
BlueTriton says, in a report from November 2021, that it has conducted "extensive testing and studies over the years to ensure that their operations do not diminish the availability of water for other users or the environment." The company says "permit conditions require BlueTriton to monitor the natural and pumping-related variations in groundwater and surface water levels." The permit was renewed by the Ontario government in 2021 and runs until November 2026.
Looking Horse's commitment to protecting water was passed down from her parents. Her mother is Dawn Martin-Hill, one of the founders of the Indigenous studies program at McMaster University and the winner of the University of Oklahoma's International Water Prize, for her commitment to improving water security for the people of the Six Nations of the Grand River.
Her father is Chief Arvol Looking Horse, 19th Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe. He was given the responsibility at age 12, the youngest keeper in history. Looking Horse says her path into activism and water sovereignty didn't happen overnight. It was a long and encompassing journey full of passion for earth, prayer for water and everything on earth.
Similar to Looking Horse, the United Nations (UN) also has concerns about how much water humans can access. According to a UN report, by 2025 1.8 billion people will be living in countries or regions with absolute water scarcity, and two thirds of the world's population could be living under "water stressed conditions."
In June of 2019, Looking Horse hand delivered a cease and desist letter from the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council to Nestlé Waters in Aberfoyle. In 2021, the council sent another letter to BlueTriton, after the company changed its name, saying "the majority of our people at Six Nations do not have access to clean drinking water... we declare your activities to remove [aquifer] waters under our territories unpermitted and demand that you cease your activity immediately."
The fight for water sovereignty and for clean drinking water continues for Looking Horse. "The urgency worldwide is huge because the world is running out of water. This is only one example of exploitative extraction by a big corporation. This doesn't include all of the pollution and micro plastics that are living in waterways and systems across the globe," she said.
"I've been praying for water and working with water for a very long time, and that's where it started," she said. "You start to learn how valuable water is on a spiritual level, but also on a statistic level. The world is really in a water crisis. So, it's in our culture to protect the water and have a responsibility."

Random thought as I'm doing research on access to clean drinking water and BIPOC communities...
Sometimes I'll (darkly) joke that everyone is just going to get cancer nowadays because it just seems like everyone is getting cancer nowadays... And now I'm getting this thought that... it's probably not a coincidence that the SDWA and EPA have not adopted any new standards for unregulated contaminants in our drinking water since

Portable Water Purifiers Market Drivers:
Surging Applications of Portable Water Filters are Projected to Drive the Growth of Portable Water Purifiers Market:
A portable Water Filter is either active charcoal- or an active carbon-based system that removes toxic bacteria and viruses from the water. Their principal application is to clean water observed in nature, allowing one to cook with it and drink it when one is out in the wilderness. They are also used to purify water that one consumes out of the faucets. Gravity filters are typically utilized when the turbidity and color of the influent are too great for pressure filters (turbidity more than 50 NTU and color more than 10 APHA). The mini well gravity water filter is the best portable filter to possess in whatever survival situation one may be in. The filter is effortless to utilize — no pumping or pulling on a straw — and easily eliminates nearly all of the harmful material from dirty water. This gravity filter has soaring filtration performance, is effortless to carry around, maintains healthy minerals in the water and is excellent for groups. An alkaline water filter pitcher, as compared to under-sink or faucet water filters, is a portable filtering device. To filter water prior to it coming out of the faucet, one does not require to link it to the cold-water pipe. Rather, the finest alkaline water filter pitcher filters water directly from the tap, with no installation or setup essential. Water pitchers are a good substitute for people who do not like the flavor of their tap water or wish to drink cleaner, safer water. However, do not wish to tackle the inconvenience of establishing an under-sink or other more complicated system. The surging applications of portable water filters are therefore fuelling the growth of the Portable Water Purifiers Market during the forecast period 2022–2027.
Soaring Innovations in Portable Water Purifiers are Expected to Boost the Growth of the Portable Water Purifiers Industry:
Steripen, a Katadyn sub-brand, has developed the Steripen UV technology which makes safe drinking water accessible within seconds. The ultraviolet purifiers for water or ultraviolet filters from Steripen establish the standard for quick, simple and efficient water treatment when traveling, during outdoor activities or readiness for tackling a crisis. Steripen Classic, Ultra, Ultralight, Adventure Opti and Aqua are environmentally friendly substitutes for bottled water. They eradicate viruses, bacteria and protozoa, involving Giardia and Cryptosporidium, in just 48 seconds. Throughout the world, people depend on Steripen’s portable ultraviolet purifiers and acknowledge their effectiveness and dependability. For travelers in developing nations, exposure to unsafe water can be a huge hazard. A handheld device termed the SteriPEN, marketed by a Maine-based firm named Hydro Photon, utilizes ultraviolet light to remove disease-causing microorganisms. The device applies the identical purification technology utilized by bottled-water plants. However, it has been reduced, so that it measures just 6.5 ounces (184 grams) and fits into a backpack. When stuck into a liter of stream or pond water for 90 seconds, it is safe to drink. These portable water purification systems or ultraviolet filters can eradicate bacteria, viruses and protozoa like giardia and cryptosporidium, which can cause sickness. The soaring innovations in portable water purifiers are therefore driving the growth of the Portable Water Purifiers Industry, thereby contributing to the Portable Water Purifiers Industry Outlook during the forecast period 2022–2027.
Portable Water Purifiers Market Challenge:
Limitations of Ultraviolet Filters are Hampering the Growth of the Portable Water Purifiers Market:
The Portable Water Filter bottle is an appropriate alternative for individual use only. It can store up to 20 ounces of water and guarantees hydration on the go. Additionally, it can filter out up to 99.9 percent of impurities. Ultraviolet filters have only one use which is generating microbiologically safe water. In simpler words, there is no impact of chemicals, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, sediments, hard water issues or any other such problems. A pre-filter is a necessity with these systems. However, most ultraviolet filters (even progressive models like the Luminor Blackcomb 5.0 UV System) appear without any pre- or post-filters. This is principally owing to the fact that consumers have different kinds of filtration requirements and filter cartridges can alter extensively relying on every specific requirement. These issues are thus hampering the growth of the Portable Water Purifiers Market.

"The Environmental Protection Agency finalized a rule Tuesday [October 8, 2024] requiring water utilities to replace all lead pipes within a decade, a move aimed at eliminating a toxic threat that continues to affect tens of thousands of American children each year.
The move, which also tightens the amount of lead allowed in the nation’s drinking water, comes nearly 40 years after Congress determined that lead pipes posed a serious risk to public health and banned them in new construction.
Research has shown that lead, a toxic contaminant that seeps from pipes into the drinking water supply, can cause irreversible developmental delays, difficulty learning and behavioral problems among children. In adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, lead exposure can cause increased blood pressure, heart disease, decreased kidney function and cancer.
But replacing the lead pipes that deliver water to millions of U.S. homes will cost tens of billions of dollars, and the push to eradicate them only gathered momentum after a water crisis in Flint, Mich., a decade ago exposed the extent to which children remain vulnerable to lead poisoning through tap water...
The groundbreaking regulation, called the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, will establish a national inventory of lead service lines and require that utilities take more aggressive action to remove lead pipes on homeowners’ private property. It also lowers the level of lead contamination that will trigger government enforcement from 15 parts per billion (ppb) to 10 ppb.
The rule also establishes the first-ever national requirement to test for lead in schools that rely on water from public utilities. It mandates thatwater systems screen all elementary and child-care facilities, where those who are the most vulnerable to lead’s effects — young children — are enrolled, and that they offer testing to middle and high schools.
The White House estimates that more than 9 million homes across the country are still supplied by lead pipelines, which are the leading source of lead contamination through drinking water. The EPA has projected that replacing all of them could cost at least $45 billion.
Lead pipes were initially installed in cities decades ago because they were cheaper and more malleable, but the heavy metal can wear down and corrode over time. President Joe Biden has made replacing them one of his top environmental priorities, securing $15 billion to give states over five years through the bipartisan infrastructure law and vowing to rid the country of lead pipes by 2031. The administration has spent $9 billion so far — enough to replace up to 1.7 million lead pipes, the administration said.
On Tuesday, the administration said it was providing an additional $2.6 billion in funding for pipe replacement. Over 367,000 lead pipes have been replaced nationwide since Biden took office, according to White House officials, affecting nearly 1 million people...
Environmental advocates said that former president Donald Trump, who issued much more modest revisions to the lead and copper rule just days before Biden took office, would have a hard time reversing the new standards.
Erik Olson, the senior strategic director for health at the Natural Resources Defense Council, said that the Safe Drinking Water Act has provisions prohibiting weakening the health protections of existing standards...
Olson added that the rule “represents a major victory for public health” and will protect millions of people “whose health is threatened every time they fill a glass from the kitchen sink contaminated by lead.”
“While the rule is imperfect and we still have more to do, this is by far the biggest step towards eliminating lead in tap water in over three decades,” he said."

How many types of mineral water are there?
Welcome to Lucky Store's Summer Sales! We're excited to offer great deals on a variety of products, including mineral water. Mineral water is a popular beverage choice, known for its refreshing taste and potential health benefits. But did you know that there are different types of mineral water? Here are some of the most common types:
1. Spring Water: This is water that comes from a natural spring or underground source. It can be still or sparkling and is known for its clean taste.
2. Purified Water: This is water that has been filtered or distilled to remove impurities. It is often used for drinking, cooking, and other household purposes.
3. Mineral Water: This is water that contains minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium. It can be still or sparkling and is often marketed for its health benefits.
4. Alkaline Water: This is water that has a pH level above 7, which is considered neutral. It is believed by some to have health benefits such as reducing acid reflux and improving hydration.
5. Electrolyte Water: This is water that has added electrolytes like sodium and potassium, which can help to rehydrate the body after exercise or other physical activity.
