Last night in the Senate, something really important happened. Republicans forced us to debate their billionaire bailout budget framework. We started voting at 6 PM because they knew doing it in the dark of night would minimize media coverage. And they do not want the American people to see how blatant their handover of our government to the billionaire class is.

So I want to explain what happened last night and what we did to fight back. The apex of Republicans’ plan to turn over our government to their wealthy cronies is a giant tax cut for billionaires and corporations. And they plan to pay for it with cuts to programs that working people rely on. Popular and necessary programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and SNAP, are all being targeted.

In order to pass the tax cut, Republicans have to go through a series of procedural steps. Last night, they took the first step which requires them to pass an outline of their plan, but with it, any senator can offer as many amendments as we want. So my Democratic colleagues and I did just that.

Now, we knew that Republicans would largely unanimously oppose them, but we had two objectives here. One, Republicans were forced to put their opinion on record — many for the first time — on the most corrupt parts of Trump and Musk’s agenda. Two, as I’ve been saying, I am going to make every process and procedure as slow and painful as possible for as long as my colleagues choose to ignore the constitutional crisis happening before our eyes.

So what did we propose? We proposed no tax cuts for anyone who makes a billion dollars a year. We made them vote on whether or not Elon Musk and DOGE should have limitless access to Americans’ personal data. We made them vote on whether to protect IVF and require insurers to cover it. Every single amendment Democrats proposed was shot down. On almost every single amendment, Republicans universally opposed it. Every Republican voted against our proposal to prevent more tax cuts for billionaires. The corruption and theft is happening in the open here.

The whole game for Republicans is taking your money and giving it to the wealthiest corporations and billionaires — even if it means kicking your parents out of a nursing home or turning off Medicaid for the poorest children. They know what they are doing is deeply unpopular. They are offering a tax cut to the most wealthy that is 850 times larger than what they are offering working people. Oh and by the way, any tax cuts for working people are going to be washed out by higher costs for basic necessities, like health care and food. It’s a fundamental injustice.

Thanks to your pressure and support, many of my Democratic colleagues have joined my effort to do everything we can to make sure they cannot destroy democracy and steal your money in the dark of the night. We are being loud about what is happening. I’m going to continue to grind the gears of Congress down as much as possible to make it that much harder and slower to get away with this corruption. That’s why the votes lasted until nearly 5 AM.

This is a five-alarm fire. I don’t think we have two years to plan and fight back. I think we have months. It’s still in our power to stop the destruction of our democracy with mass mobilization and effective opposition from elected officials. So we can’t miss any opportunity to take advantage of opportunities to put Republicans on the record and shine a light on what is happening.

And you have a role to play in this as well. I need you to amplify what’s happening, support the leaders who are fighting for you to make sure they can continue speaking truth to power against Musk and Trump’s billionaire cronies, and show up at rallies and town halls. Use every tool at your disposal to send a message loud and clear about how you expect my colleagues to lead and fight in this moment.

You know the feeling when you’ve been working so hard that when you finally take a break, it feels wrong? 

That’s how you felt- right now- staring at the towering resort in front of you.  

You were more than grateful for the effort the school put in to accumulate the funding for a beach trip for the entire hero course- something the other courses envied you all for, and in all honesty, you would gladly give up your spot for any one of them. It was your third year, a stressful time given that you were about to become fully fledged heroes by the time you all graduated in a few weeks – something you found ironic since you and your classmates have already seen more action than the average pro hero.  

Though the circumstances were a little different for you, as you had joined the hero course later in the school year following Hitoshi Shinso, who joined Class 1-B. You were put in Class 1-A to keep the classes balances, allowing your dream to come true to become a pro alongside the others.  

Your quirk, Eviscerate, let you release powerful blasts of pure kinetic energy that could destroy, explode and burn. Though while it was no doubt powerful, it was unstable, and dangerous. When you first got your quirk, you destroyed half of your home while sleeping, and the following doctors appointment suggested getting you a permanent support equipment that would act as a muzzle on your quirk to keep in contained.  

However the company that supplied the gear was unreliable and neutralized your quirk to the point where it was practically useless. From then on, you used gear to amplify your quirk instead of restrict it, and yet, though the blasts had the same effects they used to, they would sap large chunks of your energy the more powerful the blast was, which is why you passed out after taking out 7 robots during the entrance exam and ended up enrolling in General Studies, despite your potential. 

Once you managed to get into the hero course, you were paired with train with a certain Bakugou Katsuki, who was quite experienced in the explosions department and helped you develop your special moves. Bakugou pushed you to not only become a better hero but a better person, yelling at you to take care of yourself and scolding you if you didn’t drink enough water when you felt dizzy after training.  

You two had grown considerably close due to that, and you felt more comfortable within Class 1-A, never feeling left out despite your late arrival. 

And to be honest, you couldn’t help but harbor some feelings for the blonde too.  

Now, here you were, standing in front of one of the most luxurious beachside resorts in all of Japan.  

Dragging your suitcase and backpack, you gather in the lobby alongside your classmates, awaiting Aizawa Sensei’s instructions.  

The ravenette in question pulled out his phone and starts to read out the sleeping arrangements.  

“Ashido and Hagakure, Shinso and Tokoyami, Midoriya and Todoroki, Asui and Uraraka...” he drones on monotonously, and your brain subconsciously started to tune him out until a pair of names catches your attention.  

“L/N and Bakugou.” 

Almost everyone whips their heads in your direction, and your face turns bright red.

Your mind races a million miles a minute. I’m sharing a room with Bakugou?! Shit- what if I’m a bad roommate?! What if he thinks I’m gross! I’m going to have to scrub myself clean every hour now. Damn it I didn’t bring enough body wash to wash every hour of the week. You mentally groan to yourself.  

You see Bakugou heft his bags, grabbing his room key from Aizawa, and you want to melt into the floor. How in the world were you supposed to inconspicuously keep your cool around the man you’ve been crushing on for months?! Especially since you were sharing a room?! 

Sighing, you decide you should probably get your key as well, shifting your bags around, and approaching Aizawa who had your key in his hand.  

Taking it from him with appropriate thanks, you turn around to leave, but you hear his voice, stopping you in his tracks.  

“L/N.” he calls, and you look back at him confused. 

“Yes, Sensei?” you ask warily, wondering what he could be asking you about.  

“You might be wondering why you’re paired with Bakugou.” he paused, choosing his next words carefully. “We assigned rooms based on those who get along decently enough, and though Young Bakugou has most definitely mellowed out over the years, he seems to be the calmest around you.” 

You feel your cheeks subconsciously heat up at the words, warmth spreading in your heart and butterflies erupting in your stomach. Did he really act that way? 

No, he just likes you as a friend, you tell yourself, clearing your throat and looking at your teacher.  

“I understand Sensei. I have no problem rooming with Bakugou-kun.” you smile reassuringly, and the man reciprocates with a wry smile of his own before dismissing you to your room.  

“Go settle in, breakfast buffet closes at 12:30 tomorrow.” he says, grabbing his own suitcase and heading to his shared room with Vlad King.  

You marvel the resort as you make your way to the elevator, ornate marbled floors the color of sea glass accented with gold. Two giant seashells the size of gargoyles stood at both sides of the elevator doors, and you step inside, soft classical music trickling through the space as you stare out the glass wall, observing the many people of the beach, and clear aquamarine waters that looked crystalline. It was...beautiful. 

You hear a ding, marking your arrival to the 8th floor, where you and the rest of Class 1-A were sleeping, except for Tokoyami, who slept on the 7th floor alongside Class 1-B. 

The floors were carpeted, a nice burgundy with simple gold waves that ran throughout the length of the hallway, simple, but elegant.  

Trailing your eyes alongside the doors, you find the door you were looking for, Room 1076. 

You fumble with the key card, pressing against the small black sensor by the door handle, hearing the beep that signaled it was unlocked, and you open it, taking in your surroundings. 

There was a large painting of two seahorses, with their tails intertwined, hung in between the beds. The beds themselves were draped with such fancy comforters that looked like clouds, you almost didn’t want to sleep on them in fear of ruining it.  

“Oi, close yer mouth, yer gonna catch flies.” you hear a familiar voice behind you, whipping around to come face to face with a pair of vermillion eyes.  

“Oh Bakugou!” you laugh nervously “I didn’t see you there.” 

He rolls his eyes, grabbing your backpack from your shoulders forcefully and plops it onto the nearby chair, effectively flinging you backwards in the process. 

“Gah! Ah shit-” you yelp, falling backwards and losing your footing, only for strong arms to wrap around your waist and yanking you back just in time to narrow avoid breaking a very expensive looking vase.  

Looking up you see Bakugou’s eyes on you, an impassive look on his face. 

A few beats of silence pass before you burst out into laughter, Bakugou forced to shift your form in order to not have to fall over again from the ferocity of your heaving giggles.  

“Pfft- you should’ve seen your face - you were like rahhhh and I was like AHHH” you rambled, finding it difficult to breathe as your muscles painfully stretched to accommodate how much you were smiling.  

You feel a hand rest on top of your hand, effectively silencing you as Bakugou clicks his teeth impatiently. 

“Tch- calm down dumbass, ya just got here and yer already trying ta destroy the place.” he grumbles, the tips of his ears turning red. “Aizawa said we can call up room service for free- let's order some dinner and watch a movie or some shit. I’m fuckin exhausted.”

You smile brightly, shoving down the butterflies that erupt in your stomach, and nod.  

“Sounds good! You order and I’ll find something to put on.” you beam, flopping down on the bed closest to you, deciding that it was going to get messed up anyways. “Just don’t get anything too spicy. I’m not a weakling obviously, but you’re probably going to manage burning off my taste buds one way or another.” 

Bakugou rolls his eyes again, flipping you off and receiving and indignant Hey! from you, walking over to the bedside table to dial room service on the provided phone.  

Flipping through the channels, you surf through various news programs and sports broadcasts, already missing your easily accessible streaming services back home. Finally, you find a cheesy rom com you were familiar with, thankfully the timing was perfect, seeing as the movie’s opening credits roll through. The quality was surprisingly good, you thought happily to yourself, but given that you were staying in such a high-end resort, you shouldn’t be surprised.  

You make yourself comfortable, mentally high fiving yourself for deciding to wear sweatpants and a t-shirt that morning, so you didn’t feel the need to change into your pajamas just yet.  

Bakugou hangs up on the phone with a gruff salutation, sitting on his own bed adjacent to yours and raises his eyebrows at your choice of movie.  

“This one? Really?” he asks, frowning slightly and you quirk up an eyebrow in return.  

“It was all I could find, plus I know you like this one. You have the book copy of it you nerd.” you smile teasingly.  

Bakugou’s ears turn red at the realization that you noticed his guilty pleasure of reading romance novels, chucking a pillow in your direction in retaliation.  

“So what? Movie’s shit.”he grumbles, turning to watch the male lead being introduced. “S’true for all of em. Books are way better.”

You sigh, disgruntled as the pillow hits you in the face and falls off your bed out of reach. You did really want to throw it back at him, but right now, you were just too lazy. 

“Stop being such a sourpuss.” you gripe, letting your arms dangle off the side of the bed as you lie on your stomach. “Obviously books are more accurate, but just try to enjoy a classic movie as if it were a standalone.” 

The blonde sighs, making himself comfortable on his bed without another word, vermillion eyes locking themselves on the screen, just as the female lead complains to her best friend that her crush won’t like her back. He knew it was a dumb movie, just by looking at the male lead’s interactions with her, it was clear he was in love with her. Were people always so dense when it came to a guy’s feelings? 

His eyes wander in your direction, watching you doze off , face half smushed against the edge of the bed. Sighing, he gets up, grumbling as he realizes his foot fell asleep, but works through the pain as he makes his way to your side, grabbing the remote and turning off the TV.  

He places the remote on the bedside table and lifts you gently, adjusting the pillows and rearranging the comforter to safely tuck you in. However you weren’t fully asleep, your eyes blinking blearily as you weakly protest.  

“No...not yet...” you mumble, frowning softly, and Bakugou resists the urge to smooth the cute crinkle between your furrowed eyebrows “Food’s going to waste...” 

The blonde chuckles quietly, eyes softening as he tucks a strand of of loose hair away from your face. “S’not a problem dummy, I didn’t order anything. Knew ya were gonna pull this shit. We'll eat a big breakfast tomorrow.”

You nod sleepily in agreement, as he turns away to get ready for bed himself, only to be stopped by the feeling on your hand loosely wrapped around his wrist. 

“Bakugou?” 

“Yeah?”

“I love you.” 

His cheeks are tinted red, clearly flustered, not that you noticed, too tired to pick up on really anything. 

“I...”

“I love you too dumbass.”

Audio has been a solved issue for decades. I own a 1976 Sony TA-3650 amplifier. It's a powerful class-A solid state amplifier with very low (under 0.1%) distortion while pushing 55w per channel. It's great. I have absolutely no need to upgrade, my turntable (also vintage '70s Sony) sounds great through it and it has an aux channel so I can hook up a CD player my old DAP for streaming my music collection. If anything, it's maybe a little too powerful. When the -20dB switch isn't engaged it gets apartment shaking loud with the volume knob barely turned up. It's also so goddamn heavy that when I needed to have it serviced it was too unwieldy to lug around on public transit so I had to hail a cab. It's power inefficient, and it's massive. A modern class-D amplifier does everything my Sony does in a package that is a fifth the size and a tenth the weight. That modern amp is also much less expensive. In 1976 the Sony TA-3650 retailed for the equivalent of $2750 now. You can get a totally fine Fosi phono preamp and amplifier pair for around $300.

Speakers are a solved issue too, with DSP it's trivial to have fantastic crossover between tweeters and woofers in a pair of speakers, it used to be exceptionally difficult to achieve a good passive crossover via a series of transistors and circuits and careful part selection. Woofers are better, tweeters are better, materials science has come a long way. Basically as soon as you leave "shitty wireless Bluetooth speaker" tier of the market it's easy to find stuff that sounds good. Look up a few YouTube reviews for the pair of "budget" speakers I use as my desktop speakers, the Edifier r1700s. People rave about just how good these things are (and not "fantastic for the price" but "fantastic period") and they cost less than $200. Ditto for headphones, if you really want to spend the money buy a pair of Sennheiser HD 650s for $600, treat them well and then never buy another pair of headphones again in your life. I don't like open-back headphones though, so I'll stick with the excellent Shure SRH-840As (which are $400 cheaper to boot). And meanwhile in IEM land, you can get really fuckin' good IEMs for $30 from one of the Chi-fi manufacturers. The 7hz Zero2s are exceptionally good, well tuned, single driver IEMs that retail for around $30. I bought Cate a pair and she loves them. I just wish they'd stop putting waifus on their packaging.

The guys who spend thousands and thousands of dollars on audio equipment that costs less than the equipment used to record the music they're listening to are genuinely the dumbest motherfuckers on the planet.

Democrats on Capitol Hill have little power to prevent GOP leaders from moving President Trump’s ambitious policy agenda through Congress this year. But they’re going out of their way to make the process as painful as possible for vulnerable Republicans.

In the House this week, the Democrats’ top super PAC announced a new campaign to highlight the Medicaid cuts that are all but inevitable as part of the Republicans’ nascent effort to pay for an extension of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts.

In the Senate, where GOP leaders are poised to move a budget wish list this week, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is urging his troops to push amendments to amplify the Democrats’ charges that GOP leaders want to slash working-class benefits to help the wealthiest taxpayers.

And both efforts come on the heels of a choreographed tactic by Democrats on the House Budget Committee to offer a long series of policy riders to the GOP’s budget resolution aimed at preventing steep cuts to federal nutrition, health care and other programs benefiting low-income families in every district in the country.

The Democrats’ can’t unilaterally block the GOP’s agenda, since it’s expected to move by a budget procedure, known as reconciliation, that empowers the reigning Republicans to push legislation through both chambers with a simple majority.

But Democrats are hoping to use one power they do have from the minority — public outreach and mobilization. And in that effort, their message is clear: We may be in the minority in both chambers, they say, but any Republican who supports Trump’s cost-cutting agenda will have to answer for its effects on middle-class families on the campaign trail.

“Republicans’ budget proposal is a betrayal of American families — slashing Medicaid, Medicare, & Social Security to finance $4.5 trillion in tax breaks for billionaires,” Rep. Paul Tonko (D-N.Y.) said. “Budgets reflect values — and theirs puts working people last.”

At the center of the looming budget debate is Medicaid, the massive federal program providing subsidized health care benefits to millions of Americans, including children, the disabled and nursing home residents. The Republican effort to offset the cost of extending their 2017 tax cuts leans heavily on the Energy and Commerce Committee, which has been tasked to find $880 billion in savings over 10 years — a figure Republicans say will necessarily mean cuts to Medicaid, which falls under the panel’s jurisdiction.

GOP leaders have defended that strategy, arguing there’s plenty of errant spending within the program that can be weeded out. They’re also pushing for new work requirements for some Medicaid beneficiaries that would reduce costs even further.

“If you eliminate fraud, waste and abuse in Medicaid, you’ve got a huge amount of money that you can spend on real priorities for the country,” Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told reporters last week in the Capitol.

“And if you make sure that people who are able-bodied workers — you know, men under the age of 40, for example, who have rolled onto Medicaid and gotten onto the expansion and need to be working … it makes sense to people.”

Democrats are skeptical, arguing there’s no way to find the savings in Medicaid that Republicans envision without slashing real health benefits for some of America’s most vulnerable populations. They’re accusing Trump and Republicans of promoting a massive transfer of wealth from the poorest people to the wealthiest in order to offset the cost of extending the GOP’s tax cuts.

“Their objective, actually, is to pass massive tax cuts for billionaires, donors and their wealthy corporations. And then … stick working-class Americans with the bill by slashing and burning things like Medicaid to the ground,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) recently told MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace.

“It’s all connected, at the end of the day,” he continued. “And we’ve got to break through with that narrative that ties it all together for the American people and then battle it out in these different forms in the Congress, in the courts and in the community.”

The prospect of Medicaid cuts is getting plenty of pushback from some moderate Republicans, especially those with large Medicaid populations in their districts. Those voices are already sending warning signals that GOP leaders will have to prove that their plan cuts the $880 billion without slashing program benefits — or the bill will never reach Trump’s desk.

“If the inference is there’s no path to 880 without drastically hurting poor people, then the bill is dead — then the bill won’t work, because scores of Republicans will vote against it and the president will blast it,” one centrist House Republican said. “So now is the time for the committees to do their work  and then subsequently show it to members to figure out how to get to 880 without crushing poor people.”

Democratic campaign operatives are hoping to exploit those GOP anxieties.

On Tuesday, the House Majority PAC, which works to elect Democrats to the lower chamber, issued a memo accusing Republicans of “putting Medicaid on the chopping block” at the expense of their own constituents.

The release included a breakdown of the Medicaid enrollment in 27 battleground districts currently held by Republicans, including the number and percentage of children in the program.

The PAC offered a warning, saying it will target any vulnerable Republican who votes in favor of the Medicaid cuts to advance Trump’s tax cuts.

“The cuts currently pushed by House Republicans will be a defining issue in 2026,” the memo says, promising the PAC “will hold them accountable for abandoning their constituents to further enrich the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations.”

A fanservant actually connected to Fate instead of another video game!? Guess it happens sometimes! Granted, this is probably a bit overdone, but might as well throw in my two cents!

Fujimaru had a lot of possible classes going for them, with Alter Ego and Moon Cancer actually being canonical after Archetype Inception. In the end I chose to make them a Ruler: since the feats that made them an Heroic Spirit involve them commanding Servants, it makes sense to put them in the class that has the same authority in canon.

Since an hypothetical player would obviously have to choose whether to use the male or female version of Fujimaru, I've decided to use the male version as the default and leave the female version as Simple Spiritron Dresses, so that someone can choose which one to use at any moment. I mean, what other option is there, make two separate Servants with the exact skillset and gender as the only difference? That sounds incredibly wasteful, doesn't it?

The [Station Guard for Humanity] passive is in fact the exact same passive U-Olga Marie has: the description is firmly an headcanon, but it makes sense that other Servants don't have it, since the requisite of "fighting to protect humanity as a whole" is incredibly specific. As for the [Lost Form] passive, its effects reflect the buffs provided during the Kirschtaria battle at the end of Olympus.

The buffs provided by the first skill reference the effects of the Decisive-Battle Chaldea Uniform and Atlas Academy Uniform Mystic Codes, two of the most commonly used Mystic Codes in the game. I was considering adding an Order Change mechanic too somewhere, but it would have been a bit too messy.

I was considering making the second skill related to the Grand Graph System announced on New Year, but since we don't have concrete info on it yet, it'd probably work better as a Strengthening in the future.

The first Noble Phantasm listed wouldn't be selectable by a playable Fujimaru, but it would be a justification for their fighting style. Similar to the Hakunos, the battle animations would involve Fujimaru summoning Servants to fight for them: the Extra Attack would likely be Mash with the Black Barrel.

As for the true Noble Phantasm, it's basically a boss slayer designed to do massive damage against the toughest bosses in the game. The damage mods reference some of the bosses seen so far in the story, from the [Super Giant] trait for Cernunnos and the Demon Pillars, to two different mods for the Beasts. As expected given the way the Rayproof was used in the story, ORT is one of the very few bosses that hits all five power mods simultaneously.

a) fukuchi’s ability mirror lion can multiply the strength of a weapon by 100x its original power

b) mirror lion counts abilities as weapons (ex. Bram)

c) singularities are formed by self contradicting abilities OR an infinite loop created by an ability

d) in stormbringer the given example of an ability capable of creating a singularity is an ability the strengthens others’ abilities being used on itself

what would happen if fukuchi used mirror lion to amplify mirror lion’s combat power? assuming fukuchi is a suitable vessel, would he obtain a second form such as corruption or brutalization? Although without the hat and/or a command sequence I don’t think it could activate at will, however Verlaine was able to open chuuya’s gate by causing him severe emotional distress, meaning it’s activation would still be a possibility just not an easily accessible one. If he’s not a suitable vessel would it kill him? could the singularity potentially take on a beast-like form such as Guivre, Arahabaki, and the dead apple dragon?

Hi! Thank you, I'm glad you found my recs useful! I was mostly reading fics lately, specifically in Batman and Black Sails fandoms. For the former and fics in general, I have recs listed here, and the latter requires the knowledge of the show.

That said, I discovered that the authors of Desiderium Intimum, one of my most favorite fics ever, decided to finish posting this story in English, and they also released an original dark romance series! The first part is called The Black Mongrel; there are two books in total published right now, with the third one about to follow them. I read them in two days and I'm still not over them. Obsession, possessiveness, interesting characters, absolutely unreasonable abusive monsters in lust and in love - everything I love is here.

There are some warnings that come with it, like severe racial discrimination, underage, and power imbalance. The relationship unfolds between a 16 yo Darren and Varis, a professor at the school where he's studying, and to say that things are not equal between them is to say nothing. It was very difficult to make it through several parts, but knowing these authors, I was certain that the inequality would be gradually lessening, and this was exactly what happened.

I reviewed both books on Goodreads, so I'll just copy my review here for those who will be interested in learning more about the plot.

The setting is intriguing: the world is divided into classes, with the lowest of them, the Black Mongrels, facing the most severe discrimination. They have no rights at all. Darren is one of them, but he's facing scorn even from his own people because his unique sparkling diamond-like eyes and his unique and destructive fire ability make him stand out. When he learned he has a place in the most elite school where no other Mongrels can even dream of studying at, I was curious to see how he was going to handle his new conditions, and naturally, discrimination and harsh treatment of Darren were tough to see. I admire Darren's inner strength at being able to withstand this all.

I'm also completely enthralled by Varis, one of the top assassins in this world and a professor at the school. He is absolutely terrifying. Such a dark, cruel, interesting character - his obvious attention to Darren, the hatred mixed with intense attraction is just wild. I was holding my breath every time they interacted, and the instances where he got protective of Darren made me swoon. It's easy to hate and fear him, but he's so endlessly captivating that you just want to know more.

Obsession and hate/attraction on Varis' end + confusion and quiet wistfullness on Darren's that were born in the first book are amplified tenfold in the second part. The absolutely crazy sexual tension between them filled every page, it was such an incredible sensation - suffocating, overwhelming, all-consuming. The air between these two is electrified, and that's considering that the story is a slow-burn - a fantastic, tickling, intense slow-burn that's been driving me crazy.

Darren is so lovely in how innocent and clueless he is, how he has just begun to barely understand the very basics of attraction (though these feelings still feel completely alien to him). I was wondering if Varis was going to explode at some point from all the feelings :D I felt like for him, it was intense lust from the first sight, and that he's so not used to feeling anything like this that he keeps taking it out on Darren by being especially cruel and harsh, blaming him for his own weakness.

In the second half of the second book, he seemed to accept it more, and I loved seeing his softening attitude. These two have such a unique interesting dynamic: they still have an absolutely horrifying and unequal relationship, Varis is still one of the biggest tormentors for Darren, and yet they are as close to friends to each other as they could be - they aren't this close to anyone else. I loved it so much.

All the moments where Varis protects him, where he shows concern and care - something the actual professor of Darren's group keeps consistently missing; all the situations where Varis applies stricter and stricter measures to punish Darren's attackers. I really can't wait to see where it goes next because I imagine that Varis' feelings will keep gaining power.

I like how Darren's friend Joel tries to be supportive, even though he's so ignorant, and I especially love how he comments on Varis' obsession with Darren. Seeing such an electrifying obsession through someone else's eyes always gives me a boost.

I'm interested in the world itself, in the whole division of students into assassins, scouts, and others, and I love the image Varis makes - such a dangerous, cruel, lethal predator, capable of moving soundlessly, of killing someone before this person has a chance to realize anything. The comparisons with spiders are so on point. I can't wait to see what happens next because I have a feeling that Darren represents much more than he believes himself to be. There is something very special about him that can change the fabrics of how this society functions, and I'm all in for this journey.

He looked back with a resolute, yet uncertain, gaze. Sure, they managed to open a way to Twisted Wonderland with much less than this, but that was only because Mickey and PHANTASIA itself was willing it so. This was an operation between two points in space-time directly in EXA_PICO's domain.

((So. I mentioned that the Hunter Organization was made more tolerant at sword point. Or at least implied it was because trying to kill powerful psychics was discovered to be a mistake the hard way. Thomas is *key* to that.

So there are various opinions on what makes a monster a monster. But from when magic returned to the world to the Van-Lu assault that erred towards humans with weapons, magic, or organization approved/developed physical enhancements were the main trio of ‘acceptable’ changes. On the outside of this was the Van-Lu psychic dynasty.

To explain that, after ‘the oath’ an event which sealed away 99% of the magic in the world humanity still developed supernatural traits, if rarely. The Van-lu’s developed as a ‘clan’ in the Dutch golden age serving as Baltic Sea merchants and agents to the hunter organization. The ‘clan’ is split into various families and further categories of ‘psychic’ and ‘aberrant’. It seems Van-Lu psychic genetics give you 6-10 generations of increased genetic chance of special powers. Reinforced every time there is a psychic child. A significant portion of the family are also Aberrants, which in the family means ‘you have unusual powers but not psychic’.

As the 20th century came to a close these psychics became further and further their own group. The Hunter group set up a plan to kill as many of the psychics and aberrants as possible in one fell swoop and almost got away with it. Their operation beginning with the easiest targets, wiping out hundreds of psychics at the cost of some of the engineered kill teams.

However Thomas was special. A once a generation ‘s tier’ talent he was being trained in a special compound in an isolated area in upstate New York where several of the strongest Aberrants, psychics and the best security money could buy was located. Detecting the attack the compound was locked down as they prepared. The group defending it was a group of more potent Psychics who were mostly b-tier and above. (A quick note on general van-Lu tiering: d-tier and below means you cannot regularly/reliably access your psychic powers. All tiers theoretically have access to the lower tiers powers, usually amplified. C-tier has a potent general empathy ability which was used to help in business negotiations to give the Van-Lu clan money. B tier allows you to read and change specific thoughts a person has. A tier manifests physical energy granting you special psychic weapons, letting you hurt people with thoughts and feelings. S tier is just massively amped A tier powers.)

Thomas was around 10 when the massacre happened but despite his age he rapidly reached around his full potential because mental stress can produce impressive psychic powers. At the same time another potential s-class in another young cousin was there. They also awakened to s-class power due to similarly taking in the deaths of their family. Though they were barely 2 years old. They couldn’t master it. However they, and the other psychics formed a link and using their powers killed or turned the 6 kill teams sent agains the compound. After that with over 40 superhuman anti-psychics under their control, two psychics with powers that tend to manifest once every 50-70 years, and a few dozen potent aberrants and hunter allies who believed the psychic purge was too much, the group purged leadership of those who authorized the operation. This somewhat forcibly opened the group to diversity at blade-point. Though since doing so the group has remained open.

Broadly speaking the purge was more successful in Eurasia-Africa as it was chance that two s-tier psychics lived in America when the purge happened. Though all version were costly.

Since Thomas has shown little open malice to the organization instead engaging in deep reform on the US side. Though he is prone to subtle abuses of power when more reactionary forces rear their heads adjusting their thoughts if they are to stubborn. He tries to limit these abuses, but they do happen from time to time.

Anyways if not for these reforms Annalise would only be in the hunter organization purely because she is a dragon slayer *and* dragon tamer. Though she’s kept her demon side off the group records officially, she’s struggled more with keeping her apprenticeship to a known Vampire off said records. However she’s still human (enough) and the group has accepted Queenie as an ally of the organization.))

Tube Madness.

I try to be neutral in the battle between Solid State and Vacuum tubes-valves-bulbs. As stated often, I have both and like them both. Which is used has more to do with weather and heating requirements in my modest little house.

Within the opposing forces are divisions and cults. In solid state there are FETs versus Bipolar transistors. There is also class A versus, class AB versus class D as well as other initials. There are high power and low power adherents.

In tubes there is a similar breakdown except there is no class D tube amp (I think. It would not be easy at all, and all the tube sound factors disappear in the megahertz )

A special place is reserved for ultra low power vacuum triode amplifiers.

What triggered this is I just got a junk mail from one of my vacuum pushers for a special 300B matched pair for only $1200. That is enough for one stereo amp with a blistering 8 Watts of power. The style of amp is called a Single Ended Triode (SET) which operates in class A.

The come in lovely finely finished wooden jewel boxes with custom padded fitted liners to cradle these treasures.

$1200 USD!

That is just the tubes. SET amps range in price from $300 out of China to $11,000 or even $15,000 though those come with tubes. I suppose if you are spending that kind of cash, $1200 for just a pair of tubes sounds reasonable.

I have my limits. One limit is money. Even if I won the lotto, I could never bring myself to spend that kind of money for so little power. Power is my other limit. I figure the minimum power figure I can be happy with is 60 Watts. I listen to big music. That TELARC Carmina Burana would sound like crap with only 8 Watts. Don't give me shit about "normal listening levels" I can do the math. Average RMS may be low, but if a 100 or 200 Watt peak goes buy in a few milliseconds I will miss it. The ARC 60 Watter runs out of amperes every so often.

Oh just use efficient speakers it will be fine. Stop right there. A set of Klipsch horns would suit that bill and would sound big, but those sound funny. And I would need a new house to fit them, and and and. You get into accepting too many compromises.

Audiophiles in the 300 B cult wax poetic about lush sound and liquidity and on and on. That is a voice, not accuracy. I prefer accuracy thank you very much.

Avery is one of Morgana's siblings from the Investiture, and quite frankly, they are the most fun to write. A non-binary agent of chaos, Avery deserves some time in the spotlight. Code-named the 'Bacchanal' , they have powers that are amplified by music which cause people to fall into a trance and lose all inhibitions. A world-class and highly sought after DJ, Avery travels the world looking for the ultimate party.

Avery would play pretty much any kind of music, but whenever I hear this song, I think of them.

From part IV of Memento Mori, Avery enjoying some red carpet time:

“Oh wow!” Nora sat upright. “Avery looks amazing!”  We turned back to the screen, and Courtnee was fangirling over my sibling who filled the screen.  Wearing fake eyelashes shaped like butterfly wings, Avery tipped their sequin bowler hat to the camera.  “Hello, darlings!” Avery lapped up Courtnee’s attention, speaking directly to the camera. They placed the hat on her head, and swept off their jacket, revealing knee-high patent leather boots, a pin-stipped blazer worn as a dress, and a bustle that flowed to the ground as a train. “Welcome to the Bacchanalia!”  Courtnee looked as if she might just faint with happiness, and Avery smacked a kiss on her cheek, leaving behind a hot-pink lip-print.  “The Bacchanal has just arrived,” Courtnee gasped into the camera. “Well, this is certainly a surprise. I guess this really is the party to be at! And look, here comes District Attorney Jacobson, and his beautiful wife.”  “Boo!” Nora threw a page from her notepad at the screen.
