In Defence of Alex Mullner 🏈
I've been wanting to write this for a while, because I'm so tired of how often Alex appears to be misunderstood within the Stardew Valley fandom. I truly think that Alex is fundamentally minsunderstood, and as someone who thinks about him a lot (grave understatement), I wanted to put my two pence out there. Please hear me out 😭❤️ I have tried to keep this as objective as possible, based on character information.
(WC: 1085)
A common thing that is brought up about Alex’s character is that he is misogynistic. While I will not deny his misogyny (these are reasons, not excuses), I truly do not believe that, at his core, Alex is a misogynistic person. Something that people never seem to bring up about Alex is the severe lack of role models, especially male role models, in his life. His father was an abusive man, and his grandfather is grumpy and homophobic. A lot of the older men in Pelican Town are either horrible people (Clint, Lewis) or would likely not extend friendship or mentorship to Alex (Shane, Harvey, Demetrius). I would assume that Alex’s primary form of socialisation outside of his family was through gridball-related spaces — Sports teams, fan clubs, etc. There are, notoriously, spaces that are absolutely riddled with toxic masculinity. This, including the issues with his father (who, important to note, canonically didn’t treat Clara well also) have created socialisation problems in Alex’s life. All he’s known from other men is arrogance and toxicity, and because he has no role models, he believes that it’s the type of man he is also supposed to be, especially because he’s an athlete.
He knows it’s wrong, though. He knows, deep down, that this ‘persona’ he puts on is unfriendly and abrasive. He very quickly apologises to the player for it. Which, then leads me to the next point — Vulnerability.
Alex is very emotionally fragile. He’s had a difficult life, something that I assume that no one would argue against. His father was abusive, his mother died, and he lives with his grandparents, one of which is likely less than pleasant to live with. Evelyn is an angel, but she’s all Alex has. I would assume, though, that he barely even has Evelyn to help him with his issues. In Alex’s four heart event, the player finds him venting to his dog. Why would Alex be venting to his dog, if he had a support system? People who are open and willing to help him through his problems? During this heart event, when the player extends a caring hand towards Alex, he opens up about his difficult past. Then, Alex’s 6 heart event, is him once again expressing his own personal issues. His insecurities. His self-worth issues, arguably. Then, in his 8 heart event, he’s once again, upset, this time because of his mother’s death.
Once Alex is given permission to be vulnerable, it’s as if his emotional flood-gates open. Once he has a safe person (the farmer), he’s able to offload many year’s worth of pent up emotions. HIs abrasive exterior melts, and underneath it is a person who is, unquestionably, going through a lot. He’s not as arrogant as he expresses in the beginning. I would assume it’s a coping mechanism, of sorts. A mask to hide what’s going on, on the inside. He’s a gentle man, who has been hard-done by, by absolutely no fault of his own.
Similar to the fact that Alex has no support system, he also has no friends. I’m not entirely sure why this is — Perhaps because of his initial ‘arrogance’, or perhaps due to a fear of being mistreated, or perhaps because he feels (or is!) misunderstood. A big part of Alex’s character, and one that I don’t see mentioned often, is that he never goes to the saloon. Not even during the green rain events. Because of this, I’d assume that he misses out on a lot of social opportunities with the other younger people in town. Alex has Haley, but in canon, their relationship is very shallow. Both of them try to use the player as somewhat of a messenger pigeon between them, and once the player’s heart level is up with either of them, they stop hanging out as much. Alex. Does. Not. Have. Any. Friends. He is lonely, which likely adds to the issues previously mentioned.
‘’He shows off about gridball!!’ — Okay? Why shouldn’t he? He’s obviously talented, and puts a lot of work into his athleticism. This is a non-argument. Let the boy be proud of himself!
Then, there’s the gay issue. This is a little seperate, because it’s a whole other thing that’s mostly headcanon. However — Alex is one of a few bachelors who have a ‘gay’ storyline. As the male player, in Alex’s 10 heart event, he mentions that he was trying to push back his feelings for the player.
‘’I kept telling myself, you can’t have these kinds of feelings for another guy.’’
Many people in the fandom, including myself, are under the impression that Alex is gay, despite the ‘playersexual’ nature of all the romanceable characters. If this were canonically true, it would explain a lot about Alex as a character. Take all the things previously mentioned, on top of the fact that Alex is very obviously dealing with internalised homophobia, and his lonely and outcasted nature makes a lot of sense. Being gay and not having the means to express it can be a deeply isolating experience. Especially for Alex, who, again, is an athlete and has a homophobic grandfather; Two things that would, and do, greatly affect queer people’s ability to be confident in, or understand, their identities. It’s a huge question mark held above Alex’s character.
I think, ultimately, Alex doesn’t know who he is, even without taking his sexuality into account (though, it definitely adds to the situation). He’s never had the ability to explore himself, due to being put into a box as ‘the gridball guy’ with the dead mother and abusive father. He lives with his grandparents, so likely isn’t able to be as carefree as other characters (such as, say, Abigail). I also don’t think he’s able to be carefree because of the sheer amount of baggage he carries. He’s a sweet guy. Fragile, someone who needs another person (the player) to show him some love and care. He needs friendship and a shoulder to lean on, and he’s presumably never had either of those things. He shouldn’t be written off as arrogant or misogynistic, and I truly and wholeheartedly do not believe these things are true to who he actually is as a person.

My Day 8 entry for Stardew Valley Inktober is finally ready, on day 16!
“Dad, not again! He’s trying, okay? He got a new job and wants things to work out this time, we both do, for Alex’s sake. And I love him, so just drop it, please?”
Gus caught George’s expression which indicated he didn’t believe a word she said, nor would he be ‘dropping it’ any time soon.
“Well, you know how I feel,” he grumbled with resignation. “Come on, I’ll get us a seat.”
“Oh, before you go,” Gus half called out, half yelped. “I didn’t catch your name?”
“It’s Clara. Nice to meet you again, Gus.”
And once again, she was gone.

Alex wants to thank you for being so nice to his grandparents.
When you first moved to Pelican Town, the Mullners were the first people you befriended. Having been closest to your grandfather growing up, you had a soft spot in your heart for the elderly, and befriending Granny Evelyn and George came naturally to you. Eventually, you came to know about their daughter, Clara, who had tragically passed. They took in their grandson, Alex, not long after. You never really saw him much, as during the summer he worked the ice cream stand and other times he was either working out or hanging with Haley.
On one particular day, triggered by Penny pushing his wheelchair, George spent the rest of the day in a sour mood, even after she apologized. With help from Granny Evelyn, you decided to make him leek soup with fresh forage from the forest. It perked him up, and he was especially vulnerable with you.
He told you about the accident that left him permanently disabled, and how it made him feel knowing people look at him and see a weak, helpless old man. He opens up to you about how all he wants to do is be able to play catch with his grandson. You hold his hand as he tells you this. When he is done talking, there are tears in his eyes. You think for a moment before speaking.
"When I look at you, George, I don't see a weak old man. I see a compassionate man who puts his family first. I see a man who enjoys the little things in life, who doesn't take anything for granted. Most importantly, George, I see you." He smiles at that, and so does Granny, who heard everything from the doorway.
"Thank you, Farmer. The valley is a better place with you in it. And Evie and I have lived here for over 50 years," George said.
That evening you decided you were in the mood for something sweet, so for dinner you settled on breakfast. You were pouring syrup on your pancakes to really make it a complete breakfast, when you heard a knock on the door. You open the door to find Alex Mullner.
"Hey, Farmer girl. I just wanted to say thank you for being so nice to my grandparents, my Papaw especially. It's hard getting old, ya know? So it's real nice of you to do what you do for them," he looked down at you with a warm smile. You've never been this close to him before. He was cute. Real cute. You took note of his forest green eyes that had a natural confidence. You began to say it was no problem at all when he looked behind you and saw your set table.
"Wow, I knew I smelled something sweet. I love complete breakfast! Say, I haven't eaten yet, did you happen to make extras?" He asked excitedly.
You nod because you had more than enough pancakes left over, and invite Alex into your house. You serve him a plate and he thanks you. You notice he doesn't take a bite though, instead he waits for you to sit down.
"Do you say grace?" He asked. You say you don't, as you aren't really religious. You used to be, but that was before your parents died. Now, you don't really believe in Yoba. If he is, he isn't listening to you.
There's a moment of silence before you speak again.
"That doesn't mean you can't say grace, of course. I don't mind, really." Alex thanks you and bows his head, for some reason you feel compelled to do the same.
Alex gives grace to the food, to the pretty chef *wink*, to his grandparents, to the valley and to Yoba. You think it's poetic that someone who lost so much can still be so grateful. You open your eyes before him, and when he's done talking he looks at you with a big toothy grin.
"Alright, let's dig in!"
You make idle chit chat as you both eat, him devouring his food before you can even take two bites. He washes his plate in your sink much against your insistence. He asks you about your life before the valley, and you ask about his life in the valley. You grab a bottle of starfruit wine and offer him some, deciding the conversation can best be had on the couch. Before you know it, minutes turned to hours and it was already 9PM.
Talking to Alex tonight made you realize something. You were insanely attracted to him. You thought he was cute before the wine, but the wine only made the attraction worse. Alex had a gleam in his eye as he told you about his dream to be a professional gridball player.
"I think you could do it. I really mean that," you say, admiring everything about him. His dedication, his passion, his tousled hair, his perfect lips...
"Thanks for your support, I'll remember it when I go pro," he says. You bit your lip, and looked up to see Alex staring at you. You thought back to what he said earlier. Naughty thoughts raced your mined.
"Alex," a hot blush painted your cheeks.
"Do you really think I'm pretty?" You were confident enough that his answer didn't matter, but you were also confident you knew his answer. You wanted to hear him say it, and by the end of the night you wanted him begging.
A confident smirk spread across his lips.
"Yeah, I meant it. You might even be prettier than Haley," he said. You weren't pleased to be compared to another woman, and you wanted to let him know that.
"Don't ever compare me to anybody else, do you hear me?" You said, pointing a finger at him. He was shocked from your outburst.
"Wow, alright, I'm sorry, I didn't mean it like that," he sputtered. A blush ghosted his cheeks.
"My granny always taught me to respect women, I don't mean to offend you," he continued. You had an idea.
"I know of one way you can make it up to me," you said. You brought your head close to his.
"What's that?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper and his blush deepened. You smirked.
"Kiss me, Alex," you breathed, allowing him to close the gap. He kissed you hungrily, the wine leaving the two of you buzzed. He pulled you into his lap and held onto your hips tightly. You ran your fingers up his neck and through his hair before taking a fistful of it.
"Don't be hasty, puppy, Mommy's not going anywhere," you cooed. He whined at that, pressing his lips against your neck and sucking on it. You gasped in response. His hands continued wandering your body before settling on your breasts. He massaged them through your dress and you caught his lips in yours, sucking on his bottom lip and moaning into his mouth. You could feel him getting hard underneath you as your tongues whirled against each other.
"How far do you want to take this, puppy?" You asked him when you finally pulled away, rubbing his face with the back of your hand and smiling sweetly as he leaned into your touch.
"I'm willing to do whatever you want to do. I am a gentleman, after all," he smiled shyly at you for the first time and you almost melted. You didn't know Alex Mullner knew shy. A new fire lit up inside you.
"Good, then get on your knees for me," you commanded, removing yourself from his lap and making yourself comfortable on the couch. You pulled your dress up to your waist and removed your panties. They were printed with strawberries, you picked them out to match your dress. Alex hummed with delight, his eyes darkening with arousal because of the sight before him. He did as he was told and got on his knees in between your legs.
"Be a good boy, and lick my pussy," you said, shyness out the window. Alex was eager to please, and he spread your legs apart and inhaled your scent. You smelled sweet, like the syrup from dinner. He kissed up both your thighs and you couldn't help but shudder. He took his time reaching your heat, looking up at you as he hovered his lips above it. He held eye contact with you for a moment before his lips enveloped your swollen clit, already so turned on for him.
"A-ah~" you cried out. "Fuck!"
He flattened his tongue and licked your entire pussy, the tip peeking curiously into your hole. His left hand held you down by your stomach as you humped his face, his other hand cupping at your breast.
"Oh, you're making me feel so good, puppy~" you cooed, and he groaned against your clit, sending the vibrations through your whole body. Ensuring you were wet enough, he focused his tongue on your clit and pulled his hand away from your tit, choosing instead to shove his middle and ring finger into your sopping wet hole. He curled them upward just right and had you arching your back off the couch. It didn't take long before you were crying out his name and cumming all over his face. He pulled his fingers out of you, humming pleasantly at how wet you made him, and looked at his fingers thoughtfully. He looked back at you and with your lips parted slightly, he took his chance to shove his fingers in your mouth. You happily accepted them, grabbing his wrist and twirling your tongue around his digits, becoming acquainted with your own flavor.
Once you were satisfied, you popped his fingers out of your mouth and pulled him towards you. You kissed him sweetly before trading places with him, kneeling before him.
"Since you were such a good boy, I'll let you fuck my mouth," you purred up at him. You opened your mouth wide for him and stuck your tongue flat out. He obviously wasted no time pulling his thick length out and placing it upon your entrance.
Closing your lips around him, you helped him slide himself down your throat. Once he was sure you could handle him, he regained his confidence and grabbed fistfuls of your hair on either side of your head to help him fuck you.
"Fuck, you're such a pretty girl taking my cock, yeah? You wanted it so bad didn't you? Well, you can have it," he grunted as he thrust in and out of you. You had to relax and breathe through your nose as he took complete advantage of your mouth. Your tongue underneath his length caused slobber to pool out of your mouth, your face getting messy. It wasn't long before you could feel his dick start throbbing and he suddenly thrust it in the back of your mouth, spilling his seed down your throat. You had no choice but to swallow every last drop. His hands still in your hair, he pulled you off him.
"Get up here so I can fuck your needy ass properly," he growled. You mewled in anticipation as you did what you were told, the roles from earlier reversing. He grabbed a fistful of your hair and positioned you so you were hanging over the side of the couch. He used his other hand to smack your ass hard, leaving a red handprint. He spanked you again, and again, and again until you were crying out from pain. He rubs one hand over your sore cheek, and uses his other hand to rub spit on his cock, lining it up with your throbbing wet hole. He hunches over you, and breathes a plea into your ear.
"Say you want it. Please," he begs.
"I want it, Alex. God, I want you so bad," You whine in return. With one swift motion he enters you, the two of you groaning in harmony. He pulls almost all the way out before slamming into you again, his hips slapping into your ass. He pounds into you for a while, whispering sweet nothings into your ear.
"You feel so good, you take me so well. I just wanna make you feel good, make you feel so so good," he murmured, rutting into you with purpose. He was hitting all the right spots, fucking you so good you saw stars. He returned a hand to your hair and you cried out as he grabbed and yanked your head back. He leaned forward and bit into your shoulder roughly and you screamed.
"Oh fuck, yes daddy fuck me!" He twitched and growled.
"Say it again," he commanded.
"Your cock feels soo good in my pussy, daddy!" You moaned. It was then that Alex decided he needed to make you moan as much as he possibly could, for as long as he possibly could. He didn't need anybody else, not with how good you're taking his cock underneath him. How well you clench around him, and how prettily you say his name? Not to mention he's never had a girl call him daddy before, and he could get used to hearing that.
"Are you on the pill?" He asked, slowing his thrusting down slightly.
"Yes, daddy, cum in me pleaseee~" you begged, throwing your hips back desperately. He came immediately, pushing himself as deep as possible as he cried out.
"Fuckkk, you're such a good girl," he breathed into your neck. He pulled out of you, and watched fascinatingly as a glob of his cum spilled out of you. You slinked off the couch and onto the floor in front of him, massaging his thighs once more.
"Let me show you how good I can really be, daddy," you whispered. Alex's breath caught in his throat. He was in for a wild ride.

George Mullner & why he's grumpy.
So, I've often seen George framed as this grumpy old man type of character. However, when it comes to the lore of the game you find out why he's like the way he is.
Tumblr media
George loses the use of his legs in a mining accident, leaving him jobless and unable to provide for his wife and daughter.
Then his daughter grows up and marries an abusive drunk who leaves her. And then he outlives his OWN daughter. Evelyn even keeps Clara's last letter:
Momma-
If you're reading this, it means I've passed on. I'm so sorry you had to go through this. Know that I love you both. Don't be too upset, I'm with Yoba now. My final request: take care of Alex. He needs a family, something stable. He's a good kid. Love, Clara
Leaving him and his wife with their grandson.
It's just sad for the fandom to view him as this grumpy old man.
I might do a meta on Kent.

I'm recreating Stardew Valley in the Sims again. Hoping to enjoy a challenge without the original story premise I had. So far I've recreated:
* Alex
* Evelyn and George
* Alex's ghost mom, Clara
* Dusty
I've also edited lots from the Gallery:
* The Mullner Residence
* Willy's Fish Shop
* Pam's Trailer /Junkyard
* JojaMart
Looking forward to making more places and characters in this beloved cozy farming sim.

Religion: Yoba's Light. Yoba, God of All.
Yoba Believers: villagers i frequently see going to the yoba worship temple in Pierre's grocery
George. - "Ive never been religious but hey... I'm old". There's a solid headcanon stance here. I think he may have seen something during his time as a coal miner. It was a pretty damned profession and most coal miners usually end up pretty fucked from the job if they werent lucky. But there's also the fact that Alex's deceased mother also believed in Yoba. Once you gain two hearts with either of the mullners couple youll be able to find a last wish letter from Clara in their bedroom. A quote from the letter "Don't be too upset, I'm with Yoba now". Though I'm still not sure on what causes Clara's death. But you discover she's been gone for 12 years during Alex's eight heart event. I like to think that not only is George's age a factor in his belief but the fact that he also wants to believe in Yoba in order to be able to see his daughter again in the afterlife if there is one.
Jodi. - before Kent's return in year two, Jodi will often tell you that she visits Yoba's altar to pray for her husband's safety but that staying positive is really difficult to do. Jodi's belief is strung along by the fact that she desperately needs something to hold on to during Kent's imprisonment as she was determined to try to keep up the belief that her soldier husband would not die during the war leaving her and their two sons alone in this world. Belief out of necessity.
Andy. - Andy's a very strong believer in Yoba. Ive only come across one dialogue with Andy so far ingame but it leads me to believe that his belief is very much consistent and genuine. During the game if you talk to Andy on a sunday when hes visiting the shrine, he will treat you with Disdain remarking how he never sees you during temple service and almost mocks you over your disbelief in the valley's god. I headcanon that perhaps this is also why Andy doesnt get along with Pierre much because the grocer family doesnt believe in Yoba with Caroline often remarking about it on certain days and how the shrine was already there from the previous owners of the grocery. You'll often actually find Caroline and Abigail hiding in the couples bedroom on certain days when people visit the grocery in order to "avoid talking to people". This leads me to believe that perhaps the stronger religious members have tried to encourage the grocer family into worship a few too many times.
Dwarves and Shadow People are also assumed to have been worshippers of Yoba via in-game hints.
Tumblr media
Now for some of my personal headcanons about Yoba.
If you collect all the library books, you'll eventually find a book with text in it that contains the valley's creation lore and it talks about the god Yoba and how Yoba created the world.
Often described as an ancient guardian deity, I like to believe that Yoba is not as benevolent as the townsfolk might like to believe. One of the reasons why we dont get to interact with Yoba in game (referencing how in HM/SOS you get to actually interact with a deity to some extent) is because that the magic users and adventurers guild such as the Wizard and Marlon etc have been guarding a seal for generations that keeps Yoba's divine body trapped in the extreme depths of the Skull cavern mines where hopefully no one will ever discover it. Another reason as to why the skull caverns are so endless, Yoba's magic itself also keeps threats to it from finding their body as well.
Monsters are making their way to the surface (i.e monster attacks at night, the wilderness farm etc) is proof that the seal is beginning to wane and the valley's mine is one of the spots where Yoba's able to push against the seal with a soul like tangible form in order to try to reach out to the human plane.
I have a headcanon that Yoba's reach has tainted Mayor Lewis and that's part of why Lewis' greed has been stoked. Yoba wants to be released from their shackles and has been encouraging a slowly growing cult following in places that have mines and monster sightings to make humans do their bidding, to get them to find him a vessel.
I headcanon that eventually Yoba decides that my farmer Aioli will be the perfect vessel and directs monsters to target the farmer specifically to test the farmer or even capture her. At some point during Aioli's time living in Pelican Town, she is incapacitated in the mines and is taken by one of the cultists and is taken to a ritual that is made to look like sunday prayers but in reality she's being connected to the weave of Yoba's dimension where her soul is boxed into a cage of sorts to prepare her body for Yoba to take hold in her as a living vessel to hold Yoba's consciousness and part of their divinity. Yoba will begin to use Aioli to try to free their true body so that Yoba may walk in full power amongst humans again.
Yoba was the one who secretly stoked the war between gotoro and the ferngill republic. Poisoning the mind of the country's leaders slowly and consistently.

this hit me in the face with the realization alex's surname is not necessarily "mullner" like his grandparents. he's always been alex mullner in my head because of evelyn and george, but they're his mother's parents so there is a real possibility he might have his father's surname.. oh my god i will mention his mom's name is stated on the wiki as clara mullner tho so alex probably has that surname
Anyway I've been thinking about last names for the bachelor/ettes, and the names for some of their parents (not all but I do plan on coming back to it eventually)
So far I've got:
Elliott Cullinane (parents: Conan and Margaret Cullinane)
Penny Smith (parents: Pam Smith and Robert Smith)
Sebastian Fong (parents: Robin Ryans and Kai Fong)
Maru Ryans (parents: Demetrius Ryans and Robin Ryans)
Sam Jones (parents: Jodi Jones and Kent Jones)
Abigail Dubois (parents: Pierre Dubois and Caroline Dubois)
Harvey Williams
Shane Foster
Emily Burton (parents: George Burton and Amelia Burton)
Haley Burton (parents: George Burton and Amelia Burton)
Alex Martin (parents: Clara Martin and Louis Martin)

Two questions
1. Where did the blue come from
2. Isn’t your mom dead? How the hell does she have a tumbler?
I gotta stop smoking weed because question 2 sent me to a parallel universe
This is @ask-nico-sdv 's sweater. He gave it to me a while ago. I decided to wear it today. I just don't wear it a lot because it's kinda small.
She's very, very dead. I don't know what you're talking about. You're messing with me, right? Cus that's not funny.

While nothing more than a memory in SDV, her creation in TS3 was necessary to establish the proper family ties between Alex and his grandparents. I turned her into a ghost (she became ill after eating a bad jellybean), and her gravestone is available in Alex’s inventory. I assume she was a young adult when she died, as Alex was probably 6-8 years old at the time. Clara will have her own post eventually.

Another AO3 republishing, this time based on the prompt: “Write a favorite character's best dream or worst nightmare.”
Title: Evelyn
Word Count: 827
Evelyn’s nerves stiffened when the phone rang. George was already fifteen minutes late to get home from work. Was he going to stay away another couple hours? She hoped not. The sun was already setting.
She picked up the phone. “Hello?”
“Yes, is this Mrs. Evelyn Mullner, wife of Mr. George Mullner?” A voice that did not belong to her husband asked. Her heart missed a beat.
“This is she.” She barely spoke above a whisper.
“This is Mr. Harris, George Mullner’s manager at the coal mining company. I’m sorry to say that there has been an accident, and George was crushed under some rubble. He’s just been air-lifted to the hospital in Zuzu City.”
The handset fell from her hand, and its coiled cord pulled the rest of the phone from the table, it all clattering onto the floor into a loud heap. Evelyn still felt as if she were in a daze when she leaned over to pick the phone back up.
“Are you still there, Mrs. Mullner?”
“Yes, I am.”
“In a few days I’ll make arrangements for you to receive the worker’s compensation pay. In the meantime, you’re welcome to visit your husband and pray for his recovery.”
“Thank you, Mr. Harris.”
She hung up the phone.
“Mom?” Clara, barely a teenager, called from her room. She wore pajamas and her chestnut brown hair was done up in blue ribbons.
“What happened? Is Dad coming home?”
“Not tonight, sweetie.” Evelyn muttered. “Just a little trouble with work. Go to bed. You have school in the morning.”
“Okay. Good night.” Evelyn could sense the disappointment in her daughter’s voice, but now wasn’t the time to address it. She grabbed her purse and hopped into her car, and made her journey to Zuzu City.
It did not seem like long before she made it to the hospital. Quickly she made her way to the front desk.
“Excuse me,” she addressed the secretary. “My husband just got admitted into this hospital. Would you be so kind as to tell where his room is?”
“Sure thing, ma’am. What is his name?”
“Mullner. George Mullner.”
“George Mullner… and what is your name and relation to him?”
“My name is Evelyn Mullner, and I’m his wife.”
The secretary nodded as she typed into the computer. The next couple minutes felt arduous to endure. Finally, the secretary addressed her again.
“Ah, here he is.” She said almost triumphantly. Then her face fell. “Oh.”
“Oh?”
“Recorded time of death: 10:07 PM.”
That was only four minutes ago. Evelyn’s heart sank and her eyes began to water. “No, no…” This couldn’t be happening. Not now. No.
Suddenly, her eyes flew open.
She was laying in her own bed, thirty years after George’s accident. Her husband lay beside her, sleeping soundly, an occasional snore breaking the silence.
Of course, it meant he was still alive. Still with her.
Evelyn breathed a deep sigh of relief. Not that nightmare again. At least it wasn’t the version where she drives to the hospital but instead arrives at a funeral home, George’s body already prepared in its casket.
Much of the events surrounding the accident happened as it appeared in the first half of the nightmare. There was much concern among the doctors that George wouldn’t make it. But weeks later, George left the hospital alive, the only permanent damage inflicted on him was his inability to walk again. Even so, Evelyn considered her husband’s survival a miracle, even if he found it more difficult to be optimistic about it. He kept blaming himself for the accident, which did a worse number on him.
She rested her hand on George’s free hand. Even in his sleep, he would give her hand a squeeze. She squeezed back and smiled some, the memory of the dream nearly faded away. For another ten minutes, she watched her dear husband sleep, the steady rise and fall of his chest as he breathed comfortably. Sometimes, she could forget just how irreparably the accident damaged him as he lay asleep beside her.
Clara was no longer with them, unfortunately. Clara’s son Alex, however, was with them now. He took what used to be his mother’s room next door, and he too was sound asleep. Evelyn listened to the sound of George’s breathing as she slowly drifted to sleep once more. Her family was as together as Yoba could make so at this time and place, and that was enough for her.
And maybe, she thought sleepily, if she was lucky tonight, Yoba would make it up to her with a pleasant dream of the four of them together: George standing, running and playing gridball with Alex, the dog Dusty barking and running excitedly around them, Clara humming beside her as they worked in their flower garden. Evelyn could almost imagine the scent of baking cookies wafting through the air, and the smiles and laughter of that world she always longed for.
