There was some rummaging that could be heard in one of the many rooms in the blacksite. An expendable sorted through the drawers as she had done numerous times before, however this time her motives were a bit different.
It had been slow in Sebastian's shop recently, and since she had taken up space there, she had decided to scrounge up some research for his sake.
Unfortunately, it seemed that almost every single room, drawer, locker, shelf, and desk had been looted. She let out an annoyed sigh.
She decided to take a break since she was getting tired after doing this for who knows how long. She leaned against a cold metal wall and slid down it to sit down.

After several minutes of silence outside of the room, 624 could hear what sounded like shouting. It was accompanied by two pairs of footsteps quickly approaching the room 624 was in, along with what sounded like a child's laughter.
The noises quickly got closer, until a little girl ran into the room, crouching behind one of the desks while holding a small object close to her. She didn't seem to have noticed 624, as her attention was focused on the door.
The footsteps outside continued for a couple seconds before they slowly moved away, causing the girl to smile, tuck the object in her pocket, and look around the room. She quickly noticed 624, and her smile immediately dropped, her expression now filled with distrust, annoyance, and a small amount of fear.
"Who are you? What do you want? Why are you here?"

She jumps as she hears his voice, snapping the notepad shut and putting it in her pockets as she looks up at him.
"Who are you? What do you want?"
She looks suspiciously at Dakota, and now that she's actually looking up at him, he can see that instead of ears, she has axolotl like fins, and he can barely see the tip of an axolotl tail peeking out from under her dress.
As Dakota was exploring the blacksite for loose assets, he came across a small side room. These types of rooms were usually full of loose assets, but as he stepped inside he saw that he wasn't alone. Inside, sitting near the wall next to some item lockers, was a young girl who looked around 10 or so.
She didn't look like another expendable; the most obvious difference was her age, of course, but instead of the uniform jumpsuit the expendables wore, she was wearing what seemed to be a handmade purple dress that went to her ankles. She had pale skin, very light blue eyes, and her hair was blonde enough that it almost looked white.
She didn't seem to notice Dakota entering, seemingly focused on writing something on what looked like a notepad.

Dakota cocks his head to the side as he stands in the doorway. What's a child doing down here? This place, the Blacksite...it's no place for a kid, that's for sure. "...Heya. Uh...whatcha got there?" He's cautious. He has to be, in order to survive down in this watery hellscape. Sure, whoever (or whatever) this is looks like a human girl, but...for all Dakota knows, this could be some new entity he's never seen before- some kind of mimic, maybe- pretending to be human to lure him in. He wouldn't be surprised if that were the case...

I've encountered an annoying problem that makes me appreciate Tolkein's whole "language must exist within a culture so lemme write a whole world for my conlang" thing.
I made up a conlang for a specific story a while ago, and I've kinda gradually added to it bit by bit over the years and, for the sake of having one more complete language rather than a bunch of random half-baked collection of words in various fake languages, decided I could just reuse this one. I'm rather proud of what a fucking mess the systematic conjugation is, and if I made a second conlang I might be tempted to do that Latin thing where all the nouns get their own genders or some such nonsense, just to distinguish the two. Also, it just seemed like a fun idea to me in the same way that, like, you sometimes see people reuse the same character designs across multiple comics as part of their "cast" that act out their stories.
Anywho, I've been trying to reorganize my conlang notes for a bit now. Streamlined spelling rules and whatnot, and now I'm shifting the exact file type its stored on so it'll be easier to toggle if it's sorted by English or Conlang alphabetically, and I came across the words for dragon and dragonfly.
In the original story I started this for, the group that speaks this language has a disdain towards dragons, so the word for dragon is a compound word that directly translates as fire worm. Dragonflies, on the other hand, are seen as signs of luck, so the word for dragonfly can also be used to mean luck in certain contexts. I distinctly remember being pleased with the fact that I'd framed bits of language around cultural attitudes, and I wouldn't want to replace those words within that story. But neither of those choices logically follow in any other story I've toyed with applying this language to, since the cultural context around them wasn't applied to any other world I've built.
For the time being, I've dealt with it by making a second, similar version of dragon for use in other stories, and added a note to dragonfly about how it only gets to carry dual meanings in the one story world. So I guess I'm now seeing a bit of dialect diversion. Which miffs me a little. Now I feel like I'll be under more pressure to alter additional words for a given story.
It almost makes me wanna make an entire second language.

Hi! I just wanted to say that I absolutely adore your art and Arcane Blight. The way you write the characters is amazing (ESPECIALLY Aja and Claire!!!) And wow that major character death tag was like a punch to the gut (in the best way possible).
I love all the different characters (even the rather unlikable ones, like Arthur and Morgana, in the sense of how they forward the plot) in the story and how you manage to balance them and their emotions and interactions with each other, taking into account the situations they've been through/are currently in. It makes them feel real, in a way.
Anyways yeah, your art is amazing and your fic has been taking over my every waking thought since I read it ^_^
OH MY GOD HI?! I’m so, so glad you like my fic, and my art!!
I’m not gonna lie THAT death haunts me every time I write, like it’s so, so, I don’t even know how to explain it. But it just hurts, in a taken unfairly and too soon kind of way. Also one of the things I wanted in AB was Claire and Aja interacting! They could have had such a good friendship, and I stand by that..even if it took a little time to reach that in the fic.
I think it’s understandable that even if people are bad and terrible and awful, they have reasons, well most people do, but I’ve tried to give everyone in AB a reason for what they do, and why, even when they know it’s fundamentally and ethically wrong. Nuance is my tea what can I say.

i like claire a lot. i have written many characters in my life but i don’t think any of them have been as fun as claire is. i like thinking about her and the world she’s in and it’s engaging in a way writing hasn’t been in a long time. everything else was practice for claire praying hands emoji. is this the claire effect. is she doing the thing to me

10 pixels of quality. some may remember my mention of finding ancient sketches. well one of them was of a vague non-character whose idea i only remember being a level-up souls maiden sort of deal and i decided to retouch it a little (original not included because it was kinda fugly)

FTR, my personal favorite parenting dynamic is Sam and Claire in Ladies Drink Free. Sam winds up fighting his strong instinct to let Claire have one of his most important core values: autonomy.
He starts leaning into her safety, and what happens?
She blows up at him, and he gets mean in such a lovely, natural, REAL-Sam-Winchester kinda way. It's one of Sam's best moments because he's getting SO much closer to his discomfort than he does at almost every other point in the series! This is one of the few times Sam chooses safety over autonomy, and he hates it!
(We'll see him break with this in 14x01, letting Jack come along to rescue Cas against Bobby's recommendation.)
ANYWAY. CLAIRE.
This is LITERALLY Sam's most fascinating parental dynamic. In this episode, after all is said and done, Sam is more at ease with Claire making life-or-death decisions than he is about Claire not calling Jody, and it's THE most fascinating Sam-parenting dynamic to me!
If you're looking for a fun distraction:
Note: Have faith in me. It's actually Sam-positive if you have an open mind about it!
