Season 1, episode 1: Titans

Right off the bat with the creepy circus music, love that. And we are once again leveraging Dick Grayson’s extremely personal tragedy onto other people, yay!

(Side note, but I was trying to work out how old Rachel is supposed to be so I looked up Teagan Croft’s age-- SHE’S 14/15 HERE. RYAN POTTER IS 9 YEARS OLDER THAN HER. I had just been assuming Rachel, Gar and Jason were all about the same age, what the fuck. I have so many questions about the ages of these characters!!)

Look, I'm not a huge fan of Rachel in general, but knowing she's only 15~ does earn her a smidge more sympathy from me. Everything is harder when you're 15 and a bunch of cultists are trying to kill you.

Brenton Thwaites is very pretty. And very serious. (This show has it's issues, but the casting is not one of them imo)

"He's from Gotham, likes to work alone." (See? We know the source material!)

(Does anybody know why they changed it to Detroit? Were they contractually not allowed to use Bludhaven, or did they think using a real place made it more relatable?)

11 minutes in and we have our first body. (Did you know this is an Adult show, for Adults. Look how dark and gritty we are.) RIP Rachel’s fake mom.

Oh man, I know the shows whole Thing is that it’s dark and gritty but fuck me. Dick stabs two guys in the neck in his first fight and straight up snaps at least four bones.

(Just setting the tone here for when they still try to pull the “Jason is reckless and violent” card later.)

Her face journey through this whole scene is peak comedy. "I loved you" "Sorry, who are you again?"

Funny how the whole room and three men were charred crispy, but that single photo of Rachel was miraculously intact. Ah, cinema.

Back to Rachel, who is getting kidnapped! Yay! How do all these different groups of cultists suddenly know where she is?? A few days ago she was just attending school no problemo, but now they can track her across states?

At any rate, it doesn't end well for this guy in particular.

1/2 Do you think we'll have an explanation for Dick hallucinations ? I may be wrong, but we still don't know where his hallucinations for last season came from. And we are they coming back right now. Is it guilty complex (in comics Dick has a huge guilty complex)? Is it a message? He saw Batman symbol (the pressure he's under), himself in the tunnels (can be him being lost), himself in his first Robin suit sying he won't find his friends again (his fear?) and him dead (can it be a foreshadowing)

- 2/2 There is these pictures of Brenton and Teagan and Brenton's make up looks a lot like how Dick is in the vision on the ground. I saw that Dick was having hallucinations in the new episode (10th) but I'm french so I don't have access to the episode. Can you tell me what he saw? These hallucinations better be for a reason because why make Dick having them otherwise? Poor Dick just needs a good week of sleep and a huge hug!

He had some hallucinations at the beginning of the episode, but I believe it was just the same thing he saw when Barbara had him read the eye exam poster in episode 8. I think they’re gonna pick up again after what happened in this episode, though. Something tells me its something in his head telling him that he needs to be batman or take on the mantle, but I really don’t think they’re gonna have Dick take that route. I think he’ll maybe try it, hate it and go back to nightwing, or not give the option any attempt at all.

Last season his hallucinations seemed to be coming from guilt and his sense of not knowing who he was (ie, Robin/Nightwing) so with that trend, the batman thing sorta checks out (but god we don’t NEED another live action batman, idc if it’s dick grayson). I think this season it’s a mix of guilt, pressure and fear (but also I think the messages are there, just more vague)

Anyways, he needs to get the hell out of Gotham with the Titans and enjoy some California sun.

titans finale spoilers below!!!

SO i have thoughts about titans...

overall it was a really good finale. loved the music, loved the photography, the acting was AMAZING and it was a whole 9/10, so, so much better than the s1 finale. 

dick´s arrival as nightwing was dramatic af so it was on brand for him. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THE SUIT!!! it looks amazing, brenton looks fantastic and even with the dumb blue filter on it looked so, so good. kudos to the costume department for it. 

nightwing/ravager vs deathstroke was good but i feel like the whole dick vs slade thing was done way too fast. like 15 minutes into the episode and deathstroke, the very big bad villain from this season is gone just like that? (i dont believe it, of course he´s alive). maybe make him last till half the episode?? idk it felt rushed. 

rose saying the titans are her family got me like ???? why??? she spent like two weeks with them and they mostly wanted to used her as bait and hated her for being slade´s kid so... how???? it works for the sentiment i guess but really how?!

donna, dawn and kory are idiots and i loved them together. it´s strange, so strange using ‘dawn’ and ‘love’ in the same sentence but the whole scene with them and conner?? comedic gold!! it reflects the good chemistry minka, conor and anna have (had?) on set :) 

gar. sweet baby boy gar and sweet and pure conner. two pure boys that did not deserve what they got and whose trauma will probably not be adressed at all next season :( 

i hope we get to see more of mercy because the actress is a) beautiful and b) amazing! but given how they can´t use luthor on the show i doubt it :/

rachel and gar!!! THE PUREST FRIENDSHIP!!! (yes friendship. as long as teagan is a minor gar/rachel as a romantic relationship CAN´T happen on this show and i hope the writers stop pushing it bc SHE´S A FREAKING KID!)

donna. sweet donna troy that was abducted for the season and only came back for the last episodes :( she deserved better and i can´t fucking believe she died saving the pigeons who haven´t done a single useful thing this season. i hate this and i really hope they bring her back with rachel´s powers and that the pigeons stay away from the titans. kill them off, give them their own show, i don´t care. 

 dick holding donna after she died killed me and him crying with bruce about her death killed me even more. 

dick and bruce!!! soft talking!!! joking!!! smiling at each other!!!! im a sucker for the batfam so this made me so, so happy. would have been better with jason there who totally deserved more screentime as well!!! one scene for him was not enough but it was nice that he was there with the titans for donna´s funeral ( departing?)). 

also a little mention of diana wouldn´t have hurt either!! 

the scene with them at the tower was really cool and emotional and two things stand out: gar and bruce´s reaction when dick said that he and donna had in common that their parents liked to dress up at night and fight crime AND bruce´s reaction when dick said that they were recovering from the damage done by their families, he was like ‘okay you ungrateful brat’ it was hilarious lol

iain glen gained my approval as bruce wayne. i know that he was dying for it lmao but he´s good!! 

that final shot of the team together was pretty epic, not gonna lie. 

blackfire´s introduction!!! im ready for her and kory to slay next season. also are we going to tamaran and themyscira next season??? given that rachel went there... i don´t know but it would be cool!

until next fall, titans!! let´s hope for a so much better s3 bc this season was pretty much a big mess. let´s hope for more about the core four and less about the pigeons!

DC UNIVERSE’S FIRST TV SERIES ‘TITANS’ IS GETTING POSITIVE REVIEWS AND HERE’S WHY!

Everything DC got right in its new series.

 As a fan of all things DC and superheroes, my heart is happy with how Titans is faring so far. Admittedly, there was a little bit of worry on my part upon seeing the trailer for the first time. While I was excited to see it, I was also hoping I didn’t get disappointed with it. I’ve been waiting for this show to come out even when it wasn’t a sure thing yet. But now, I gotta say, waiting one week just for another episode is even harder.

With a positive 93% rating from Google users and 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, I think I’m not the only one impressed. If you ask me, here are the reasons why we love it and keep coming back for more!

(As always, warning for the spoilers ahead!)

1.       THE BOY WONDER

Two words: Dick Grayson.

 I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one here who is very motivated to watch because finally, finally! We get to see the Richard John Grayson portrayed as he was meant to be portrayed (no offense Chris O’ Donell). They really did give him an apt nickname as the Boy Wonder. Because boyyyy he is wonderful.

 Although I’ve never imagined Dick as this dark and brooding character, I guess it only makes sense seeing as he recently called it quits with his sort- of adoptive father slash partner in superheroing. Plus, I’m guessing growing up around Batman isn’t exactly sunshine and rainbows, and it’ obvious from the flashbacks and from his reaction when Raven mentions the circus that the death of his parents still weighs very heavily on him. Again just like Bruce.

 And that’s not where the similarities end. Even the way Dick fights clearly shows his training from Batman. We see him blending in with the shadows, grabbing enemies and whisking them away screaming. That use of the gas while covering half his face with the cape maneuver. This are all classic Batman techniques!

 Also can we talk about how well he’s trained as a fighter? Because Hawk and Dove were about to be roasted birds before he swooped in to save them. They couldn’t handle the bad guys when there was two of them, but Dick made quick work of them without even breaking a sweat. Of course, since I’m talking about his awesome fighting skills, I need to mention that retractable bo staff. When he first brought it out, my heart literally leapt with joy because it looked so much like an eskrima stick which is his weapon of choice (as I’ve mentioned before). After it extended into a bo staff, I was a little disappointed. But only a little, because the way it happened was pretty cool. Well played Greg Berlanti and Akiva Goldsman. Well played.

 We also need to give credit to Dick for his discipline. The way he cleans up his suit after every fight and checks all of his equipment really shows you the kind of training he received from Bruce (or maybe Alfred). As I was telling my dad, who is also a major fan by the way, “he seems to be the Batman we’ve always wanted, but never gotten.”

 Of course, there are some bad sides. He needs to get rid of all that broodiness and darkness. Jason Todd could use some of it, though. Cause from what I’ve seen in the trailers, Jason seems to be a bit too preppy. I think somebody mistakenly switched their personalities. Also, no one appreciates a girlfriend stealer Dick! What the heck you doing cozying up to Dove? I would prefer it if he and Donna were together instead. I honestly ship them more than I do him and Starfire. I hope this is explored in the series.

 On an ending note (because I could write about Dick Grayson all day), can we just thank whoever decided to cast Brenton Thwaites as Nightwing? Bless your soul. Who wouldn’t mind looking at him all day? *swoon*

2.       EDGINESS WITH A PINCH OF HUMOR

 I’ve always loved DC’s dark tone. While I do appreciate the humor in Marvel, the dark tone of DC just gives it a much more realistic vibe. These are real people facing real dilemmas. They do get bruised (as seen in Dick’s shirtless scenes) and bloody and broken (as also seen from Hank’s shirtless scene). I like that the series is exploring that and showing us, that yes, these characters are far from perfect. That yes, they walk a fine line between being a hero and a villain, and one wrong decision could put them on the wrong side. They go through pain and heartbreak and betrayal. It’s very raw. Very dark. But I love it.

 I also love that the attempt to inject humor here is just right. It’s not overly done or pathetic- looking like Shazam (sorry for those who are excited to see it, but really, I think they tried too hard to be funny with that one and just died). The humor here is much more muted, just perfect to give a little lightness from all the torn up feelings the characters are experiencing. Like I said, it’s just a pinch, but it’s there. And I think the writers have found a perfect balance.

 3.       PERFECT CAST

I’ve already thanked whoever cast Brenton Thwaites, but really I’m amazed by the entire ensemble. Even to the people behind the scenes for making a successful show to launch the DC Universe streaming platform. This can really be a good start for the other upcoming series like Doom Patrol and Harley Quinn. 

Aside from Dick, I’d have to say Raven is also beautifully portrayed by Teagan Croft (and apparently she’s only fourteen?! Dude, what? Can I adopt her?!). 

I’m also warming up to Starfire. From the first episode I’ve seen, she can be a badass, but her fun and cavalier personality also shines through as she tried to remember who she is. I’m hoping to see more of the free- spirited, fun- loving Starfire like in the comics and old animated series. Anna Diop is great with giving us the strong yet blasé personality, even that naivety, which Starfire seems to have. 

And of course, let’s not forget Hawk and Dove (aka Hank and Dawn). Although I’m not a fan of their somewhat toxic relationship, I did fall in love with Dove’s calm and calming presence. On the other hand, I also like how Ritchson contrasts that with the douchebag that is Hank/ Hawk. Apparently, opposites still attract. Can’t wait to see Donna and Beast Boy incorporated more into the story.

4.       ACTION (AND VIOLENCE?)

Welllllllll I’m not really a fan of the violence, but I guess it’s a part of what makes the show interesting. The fight scenes are very well choreographed. I love that there are some tumblings done by Dick (maybe a stunt double) that show his acrobatic roots. I also love the teamwork shown in the scene where he’s fighting alongside Hawk and Dove. There seems to be large amounts of blood spilled, whether it be the bad guys or the good guys. It’s not entirely necessary and reminds me too much of Netflix’s The Punisher, but I guess some people like that. Kudos to the fight choreographers though! Because of them (and not the blood) the fight scenes have become my favourite part of the show. I could watch those scenes a ton of times.

OTHER NOTEWORTHY THINGS:

·         Donna Troy (Wonder Girl) is set to make an appearance and you don’t know how happy this makes me! She’s Dick’s best friend in the comics and I ship them so hard. Can’t wait to see what their chemistry will be like on screen and what Wonder Girl will bring to the table. Since Wonder Woman was a big hit, I’m expecting something good from her as well.

·         People die in this universe and, although it makes me sad, it is something unavoidable in a superhero movie. I always kind of disliked the fact that no one ever stays dead in a superhero movie or story. Tragedy is a great part of what makes a hero. However, if they kill off Dove, I’m starting a protest.

·         Starfire and Raven get costumes. Although it hasn’t been shown in the series per se, it’s been confirmed with some BTS pictures, and that’s nearly as good. My girl Donna should also get her own clothes otherwise-

·         Grayson’s soft side when it comes to Rachel. Honestly, Dick being a dad to Rachel and totally denying that he’s good with family is the cutest thing ever (Also can we talk about him calling her Rache?! Too cute!)

Remember a couple months ago, when the collective DC nerd community huddled close to their computer screens and heard the words that caused a shift in the multiverse: “Fuck Batman”? Because I do, and I thought about it a lot as I sat down to watch the open arc of DC Universe’s Titans.

As an unabashed fanboy for all things DC Comics, I was… looking forward to it? The original Teen Titans was a staple of my adolescent animation years and for whatever reason, I am an ardent watcher of all of the Arrowverse. Titans looks like what happens when you blend the general premise of the former, the aesthetic of the later, and then you grab some of the filters they used for the DC Cinematic Universe and then set it to max intensity to see what happens.

And look, I try to keep an open mind. I try not to be beholden to canon and all of the preconceptions I have fostered due to nostalgia. Titans was very clearly going to appeal to a different sensibility, and it was very upfront about that. But on a scale of Telltale’s Batman, a stunning reinvention of the character that made targeted changes in order to bolster certain characteristics, to Gotham, a haphazard slapdash of various Batman-related sound bytes and errant fan wiki pages that were organized by a random number generator, Titans definitely errs more on the side of Gotham. Legit, Teen Titans Go! is a better encapsulation of the characters as sacrilege as it might be to type that. As such, your enjoyment of the series is going to be entirely dependent on your ability to forget everything you knew about the characters and just sort of go with the stuff they place in front of you. But y’all, it kind of makes you remember all the thing earlier series did better. 

The first few episodes felt very anthology-esque, giving a spotlight to various characters. At the center of the story, we have Brenton Thwaites playing a very convincing Jason Todd with the notable caveat being that he is actually supposed to be Dick Grayson. Dick is a regular ole Dick Tracy, working as a detective in Detroit, MI (yeah, I know) after a “falling out with his old partner.” Rachel Roth a.k.a. Raven, played by Teagan Croft, is the supernatural empath we are all familiar with sans being significantly younger than most iterations. Starfire is our other leading lady, played by Anna Diop with what I’m told is an exceptionally questionable wig. And finally Beast Boy, played by Ryan Potter, rounds out of the main cast, although he’s had about maybe 15 minutes of screentime in the first three episodes, so I’m not really sure if I like him or not yet.

There will be people who will enjoy seeing a live-action Titans with Robin, Starfire, Raven, and Beast Boy at the helm regardless of how weird it feels at time. There will be others who absolutely, and rightfully, eviscerate everything the show does. For me, it takes a lot for me personally to hate on a show. I know exactly what type of ire Titans is going to get, and I’m gonna side-eye anyone who gives this series excessive praise. Like its cousins on the silver screen, Titans is an aggressive average at its very best and aggressively aggravating when it stumbles. I’m going to keep watching, because I need something to satiate my appetite until my CW shows come back in full force or Young Justice makes it triumph return, but y’all…don’t feel compelled to watch Titans. Lots of other media available in the DC Universe package that you can find true enjoyment with, but we’ll recapping it if you’re undecided.

So...I watched the first episode of Titans last night!

I’m taking a break from my heavy workload, so I figured I might as well write out my thoughts now. I’m just going to break it up by character...

Raven: OMG! So, I’ve added Raven to the list of fictional children I’ve adopted (the others being MCU Peter Parker and all of the kids from Stranger Things). Teagan Croft is killing it as Rachel Roth. There wasn’t a single time during the pilot that I didn’t feel for her. This poor girl. There were several times I wanted to jump in and protect her (even though she probably wouldn’t need my help with her inner-self fighting her battles). Her face is so expressive and in all her interactions with Dick, I could hear the desperation and sadness in her voice. I was completely convinced she was her character. Teagan Croft is Raven!

Dick: From what I’ve seen so far, I have no complaints about him or Brenton Thawnes’s portrayal of him. I think he’s doing a great job at portraying a former Gotham resident now making a name for himself in Detroit, Michigan. I think we can also see the influence Bruce has had on him, even though he’s trying to separate himself from him. I don’t feel like I can say much now, though, as I feel like more emphasis was put on Raven and Starfire in this episode than anyone else. I’m hoping to see more done with Dick in future episodes.

Starfire: I didn’t need the good reviews to know Anna Diop was going to kill it as Kory, and I’m so, so, so happy about this! Our queen delivered! After all the hate she’s been given due to her dark skin and the costume, she put all of those haters in their places. Now, is this the Starfire from the cartoon many of grew up with? Absolutely not, and that’s a good thing. This is not a show aimed at the same audience. This is a show for a much mature audience.

Ughhh...but I’m left with so many questions about her. How did she end up in Vienna? How did she get in with such a shady crowd in Vienna? Why is she looking for Rachel? These writers are killing me in the best way possible!

Beast Boy: OMG! We only get a tiny bit of him in the last bit of the episode, but what I saw was very reminiscent of BB from the cartoon, which I think is fine. Haha, this kid really wanted that game, didn’t he? Pretty extra to steal it as a tiger!

Of course, I can’t say much, but I know we’ll get to see more of him soon!

Overall, I rarely do this, but I give what I’ve seen 10/10!

I didn't get to fangirl and analyze right after because it was late and I had to get up early for work but you're giving me a perfect opportunity to gather all my thoughts together in one place, thank you.

I am choosing to IGNORE any implications of this shot whatsoever until we get a concrete confirmation (and we better not). I hate the dread this one damn picture caused all over the fandom and overshadowed the hype BUT I'm choosing to remain reasonable and not assume the worst. This picks up literally right after S3 so Rachel has been back for what, 2 days? She's allowed to catch up and cuddle with all her family members, something tells me she will be glued to Dick and Kory as much as she is to Gar here. It doesn't need to mean absolutely anything deeper than that.

And if it does, if they are really going to screw us over like that... Well, we have to prepare. Because I am NOT abandoning my babies, I will keep watching the show even if they are going to shove this thing down my throat. I love this family too much to leave it.

Teagan confirmed this is platonic. We're safe.

Some things we found out before the panel actually made me really excited. First Brenton confirmed some season 1 villains are coming back + at the panel Greg added to this that death isn't an issue in this case, so I'm hoping for Adamson or Angela and The Nuclear Family.

And it's REALLY INTERESTING how he only mentions Dick and Rachel specifically. This is giving me hope for some good moments with my father-daughter duo! My mind was overflowing with theories throughout the weekend and if it goes how I'm thinking it might go, it's going to be absolutely GLORIOUS.

Everything Ryan said about Gar's trauma coming back and how it's a good thing for the character makes me so happy. It's about time this is addressed. It's Ryan's and Gar's time to shine!!!! Also THE SUIT. I am in love with that suit!!!!!

And DICKKORY! Brenton, our King, our Captain, finally pulled through. I love watching that clip, he's blushing like crazy hahahaha. "You're on HBO MAX now" "We're allowed to do some things, yeah" I love that man. It's going to be hot as hell in there!!!!

Now, that fight with Mother Mayhem. She kicks their asses, leaves them licking their wounds - they said that, we've seen that. And as badass as it is to see the team finally together like this, the whole thing seemed pretty... stupid.

Because are they seriously taking turns going at her while there rest just stands and watch? Dick really thought it's a good idea to charge at the woman only with his escrima sticks after two (TWO!) of the most powerful team members got knocked out in seconds? Are they all really that stunned by the fact a magic wielder is attacking them?

So these are my thoughts on what we've seen and learned. I will be watching the panel again after work and maybe come to some other conclusions.

As for what I want to happen?

I hope they won't waste too much time on Lex. We don't need another Crane situation.

I want a lot more family moments, that tight knit vibe. What we got is a pretty good start.

Obviously the most important thing to me here is my father-daughter duo, so I'm gonna say this: I'm expecting some protectiveness right away because for god's sake Rachel passed out after that attack - I better see a concerned father in action.

Also this makes me wonder if this the reason for the whole white hair/no gemstone thing:

Mother Mayhem sucked in everything Rachel gave her in that clip, drained her basically. Will this be the after effect? Ever since I saw those pics I thought something big and painful is going to happen and it will be sudden, but maybe the change is gradual? Her her starts fading, gem either falls out or melts into the skin - and they rush back to Star Labs to get help. We'll see.

Then there's Joseph Morgan saying his "sweet and innocent" Sebastian is on first name basis with Dick and Rachel specifically which makes me think - Dick is going to trust that man with Rachel's wellbeing and he will DEEPLY regret it later.

Right that’s why this lowkey hurts and I was rooting for this entire cast and now looks I gotta just be here for Anna, Teagan and Brenton. That’s the thing why leave Anna out of things? What’s the purpose? I have heard so much about Minka and I didn’t want to believe it because you know rumors. But now that I’ve seen what happened between her, Conor and Anna plus how she’s always cozying up to one of the show runners I believe the gossip 🤷🏽‍♀️

I’m peeping how some of the cast is acting and that’s all I’m going to say 🙃
