Het aantal besmettingen met het coronavirus in China stijgt nauwelijks meer. In de Chinese stad Wuhan is het laatste noodziekenhuis gesloten.

Er is in China inmiddels ruime ervaring opgedaan met de behandeling van Covid-19.

In Wuhan wist arts Li Yuehua coronapatiënten succesvol te behandelen door op specifieke plekken lage doses fenol in te spuiten in het lichaam.

Herstelden

Medisch Dossier sprak met arts Lin Wenzhi van huisartsenpraktijk Bonda en Medisch Centrum Balans in Den Haag over het onderzoek van Li Yuehua.

Lin Wenzhi studeerde Geneeskunde aan de Guanghzou Medical University in Guangdong en aan de Erasmus Universiteit in Rotterdam.

Ze wees erop dat fenol wordt gebruikt om de zenuwfunctie gedeeltelijk uit te schakelen.

“Fenol is een bekend middel in de Nederlandse zorg, met een goed gedocumenteerde en beschreven behandelingsstandaard,” zei ze. “De door Li gehanteerde dosis is onschadelijk.”

Overreactie gedempt

Fenol desensibiliseert mogelijk de overgevoelige zenuwen die de longen vocht laten produceren bij besmetting met het coronavirus, legde ze uit.

Door het gedeeltelijk uitschakelen van de zenuwfunctie wordt de overreactie van het lichaam op de virusinfectie gedempt.

Het dempen van de reactie geeft het lichaam vervolgens tijd om de afweer tegen het virus op te bouwen.

Nader onderzoek

De dosis die Li gebruikte is honderd keer lager dan de dosis die in Nederland gebruikelijk is, aldus Lin Wenzhi.

Ze waarschuwde dat fenol een toxisch middel is dat – afhankelijk van de dosering – tot bijwerkingen kan leiden.

Alleen medici mogen het toedienen en nader onderzoek is echt nodig, zei ze.
