An effort to change Santa Clara’s City charter from an elected city clerk and police chief to appointed ones appears to have failed. According to the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters, both Measures A and B on the March 5 ballot have failed. Measure A – Santa Clara’s City Clerk Will Remain Elected. At last update, just before 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, 66.91% of voters believed that the City Charter should remain the same, with the City Clerk as an elected position. "REFEREE WILL BE CALLED IN," Kingston Daily Standard. December 20, 1913. Page 6. --- Paving Dispute Goes to Montreal Expert. ---- Board of Works so Recommends - Repair of Breakwater - A. Pettigrew is New Clerk. ---- The much mooted question of suitable paving material for Princess and King streets was discussed again last evening at the final meeting for the year of the Board of Works. The reports of Mr. T. M. Mather, Syracuse, the city's consulting engineer in the matter of pavements and of Prof. Kirkpatrick, the Street Railway Co.'s adviser, who were in conference here recently, were read to the meeting by the City Clerk.
Mr. Mather strongly recommended the vitrified brick pavement which he pointed out was more serviceable in connection with the car tracks than was the wood block pavement.
Prof. Kirkpatrick took the opposite stand, in advocating the wood block, and cited numerous instances where this material had been successfully used.
After a brief discussion of the reports it was pointed out that the Board could take no action in the case as an agreement existing between the city and the Street Railway Co. stated that in case of a dispute arising between the city and the company the matter must be referred to the superintendent of the Montreal Tramway Co. for settlement. A motion was passed, recommending to the City Council that this matter he settled according to agreement. This will mean that the question of the more suitable pavement will be decided definitely by the Superintendent of the Montreal Tramways.
REPAIR OF BREAKWATER. The attention of the Board was called by the City Engineer to the damage caused by the severe storm of last month to the breakwater on King street, and the suggestion made that a beach be formed by dumping stone along the shore to protect the bank from further injury, unless it was deemed advisable to construct a concrete pier instead of the present wooden one.
Ald. White was of the opinion that the help of the government might be enlisted to erect such a pier.
The motion of Ald. Couper to have the Mayor and the City Engineer consult with Mr. W. F. Nickle, M.P.. in the matter, was carried. As the buildings which Major Leonard will donate to Queen's University will face this breakwater it was thought that the city should help to make this vicinity as attractive as possible.
ACCOUNT HELD UP. The various accounts were passed with the exception of that of Mr. Mather whose bill for $121, the balance due him for services in connection with the street paving question, was held up by the auditor, Mr. Muir, on the ground that Mr. Mather's work was not completed. The matter was referred to the City Solicitor.
A communication from the City Solicitor advising the obtaining of a bond from the Dietrich Co., which at the present has charge of laying the conduits, guaranteeing the paying for any damages caused to the pavements while conducting this work was read. A motion to have such a bond obtained by the City Engineer under manager of the Utilities was carried by the meeting.
CLERK APPOINTED. A number of applications for the position of clerk in the City Engineer's office were considered and Mr. A. Pettigrew of the Treasurer's Department was appointed to the position at a salary of $800. The question of the erection of a dock at the foot of Clarence street was discussed and a letter from the City Solicitor was read in which he recommended the construction of the dock north of Clarence street. The City Engineer was requested to furnish estimates of this work for future meeting.
REQUESTS MADE. A petition from the Canadian Locomotive Works for a sewer on Ontario street, between Earl and Gore streets was granted.
A request from G. Ledford for a sower on Rideau street was referred to the Board of Health.
A letter from H. F. Norman, asking for a sewer and gas main on Paglan Road, from Patrick to Sydenham streets, was referred to the Engineer.
A communication was read from a man named Bird asking remuneration for the saving of timbers torn lose from the breakwater during the storm last month. The Engineer was requested to report on the value of the timbers salvaged.

It's a bit hard to reconstruct the backstory of how Mina Lucy and Jonathan met...
- Mina and Lucy have known each other "since they were children"
- Lucy talks about Mina's pupils as something pretty close to peers and Mina does seem to sometimes lump her with them as someone she's being an example for...
- Mina knew Jonathan for several years and since "before she went to school". This is widely interpreted as being before she went to school in their early childhood, but could also be before she went to school as a teacher. However would those periods really be distinct in the Victorian era, or would Mina just pass directly from student to schoolmistress upon "graduation"?
- Lucy does not know Jonathan, canonically. I know, its terrible. Totally destroying OT3 dreams. But Mina writes in a letter "the quiet dignity I told you was in his face"
How did this happen???

Update on the bubblegum infractor... or INFRACTORS. Turns out there's a group (likely a sindicate) of them doing this kind of shit around the district using a strange chewable mix where it's safe to mix it on any liquids but once dry, it becomes a somekind of poison. Thanks the people above for these layered gloves and gasmask, but wont change the fact that there's someone out there wanting to get rid of us.

since gloria's trek from the vault to diamond city was SO horrific, it's permanently warped her sense of appropriate escalation forever. stepping on a landmine and suffering serious injury as a result is obviously a huge life event, she nearly died of sepsis, but it's the raiders hunting her for three days straight that really changed her. gloria before and after the landmine are pretty similar people. gloria before and after being hunted are almost similar people, and i think she's cognizant of that fact and hates it. she abhors violence intellectually, she has a very strong sense of right and wrong, but depending on the circumstance she's fine leaning into the 'wrong' and, at the end of the day, could beat somebody to death with a brick and not bat an immaculately made-up eye. another day another dollar, right? it's just how the world is now

With less than three weeks to go before the election, the campaign for and against appointing the City’s city clerk (Measure A) and police chief (Measure B) is in high gear. The opposition campaign is being run by Santa Clara Police Association PAC rather than by a purpose-formed committee. Supporters of the measure have formed a conventional political committee. "Langley Reinstates Soldier as Clerk," Vancouver Sun. October 23, 1943. Page 12. --- Major R. A. Payne was reinstated as municipal clerk of Langley by the municipal council on Thursday night, bringing an end to a dispute between the council and Payne over his reinstatement following his discharge from the army.
Last August, the council passed resolutions retiring Major Payne, who had been discharged from the army, and appointing E. A. Fountain as acting clerk.
Thursday night, the council at a special meeting rescinded these resolutions after T. R. Selkirk, New Westminster, reviewed Major Payne's position.
Reeve Alex Hope and several councillors expressed regret that owing to a misunderstanding of the intentions of Major Payne, the action had been taken.
Last August, they said, they had no knowledge of the reinstatement provisions of the Civil Employment Act.

when u tell someone who hasn’t had to apply for a job in a while “the interview process is like 6 weeks atp” they don’t believe you but a lot of employers will wait like 2 weeks to follow up, and they always need to do multiple rounds of interviews which takes a week for each round, and then there’s two more weeks of dead silence before you hear back. sometimes you’ll apply for something in january and they will call you up in the summer like “hey you still want the job” it’s crazy. they’re out here putting desk clerks through two phone interviews and two in persons at two different locations. they make the pages interview TWICE and they also have to do TWO sorting tests!! that job pays well below minimum wage, it’s a job meant for retirees and high school students why do you interview them like it requires a mlis
