Sharing a Computer with More Friends

A few months ago I built an I/O expansion board for my homebrew 68030 project with a 4-port serial card to go with it, and got BASIC running for four simultaneous users. It worked, but not as well as I had hoped. I wanted to be able to run two of those serial cards to support 8 total users, but it had proven unstable enough that with just the one card I had to slow down the whole system to 8MHz.

So I designed a new serial card.

I had previously been running this computer without any issues at 32MHz with a mezzanine card with FPU & IDE as well as a video card. The main board by itself can clear 56MHz. Having to go all the way down to 8MHz just didn't sit well with me. I want this machine to run as fast as possible for its 8 users.

I put extra time into reviewing worst-case timing for all components and graphing out how signals would propagate. The 16C554 quad UARTs I'm designing around are modern parts that can handle pretty fast bus speeds themselves — easily up to 50MHz with no wait states on the 68030 bus — assuming all the glue logic can get out of the way fast enough.

Signal propagation delays add up quickly.

My first draft schematic used discrete 74-series logic for chip selection, signal decoding, timing, etc. At slower bus speeds this wouldn't have been a problem. But I want this thing to run as fast as possible. By the time critical signals had made it through all those logic gates, I was looking at already being well into one wait state by the time the UART would see a 50MHz bus cycle begin.

I needed something faster. I was also running low on space on the board for all the components I needed. The obvious answer was programmable logic. I settled on the ATF22V10 as a good compromise of speed, size, availability, and programmability. It's available in DIP with gate delays down to 7ns. Where discrete gates were necessary, I selected the fastest parts I could. The final design I came up with showed a worst case timing that would only need one wait state at 50MHz and none for anything slower.

It ended up being a tight fit, but I was able to make it work on a 4-layer board within the same footprint of my main board, putting some components on the back side. (It may look like a bunch of empty space, but there's actually a lot going on running full RS232 with handshaking for 8 ports).

New problem. I had blown my budget for the project. As much as I love those stacked DE9 connectors, they're expensive. And there's no getting around the $10 pricetag for each of those quad UARTs. Even using parts on-hand where possible, I was looking at a hefty Mouser order.

[jbevren] suggested using ganged RJ45 connectors with the Cisco pinout instead of stacked DE9, to save space & cut costs. [Chartreuse] suggested buffering the TTL serial TX/RX signals to drive the LEDs that are frequently included on PCB-mount RJ45 connectors. Both great ideas. I was able to cut 20% off my parts order and add some nice diagnostic lights to the design.

Two weeks later, I received five new PCBs straight from China. I of course wasted no time setting into starting to assemble one.

I really set myself up for a challenge on this one. I learned to solder some 25 years ago and have done countless projects in that time. But I think this might be the most compact, most heavily populated, most surface mount board I've ever assembled myself. (There are 56 size 0805 (that's 2x1.2mm) capacitors alone!)

After a few hours soldering, I had enough assembled to test the first serial port. If the first port worked then the other three on that chip should work too, and there's a great chance the other chip would work as well.

And it did work! After some poking around with the oscilloscope to make sure nothing was amiss, I started up the computer and it ran just fine at 8MHz.

And at 16MHz.

And at 25MHz.

And at 32MHz.

And at 40MHz.

And almost at 50MHz!

Remember what I said about my timing graphs showing one wait state for 50MHz? The computer actually booted up and ran just fine at 50MHz. The problem was when I tried typing in a BASIC program certain letters were getting switched around, and try as I might, BASIC just refused to 'RQN' my program. It was pretty consistently losing bit 3, likely from that signal having to travel just a tiny bit farther than the others. A problem that will probably be resolved with an extra wait state.

Good enough for a first test! A few hours more and I finished assembling the card.

I did have some problems with cleaning up flux off the board, and I had to touch up a few weak solder joints, but so far everything seems to be working. I've updated my little multi-user kernel to run all 8 users from this new card and it's running stable at 40MHz.

I need to update my logic on the 22V10 to fix a bug in the wait state generator. I would love to see this thing actually running at 50MHz — a 25% overclock for the 40MHz CPU I am currently running. I also want to expand my little kernel program to add some new features like the ability to configure the console serial ports and maybe even load programs from disk.

I hope to bring this machine with a collection of terminals and modems this June to VCF Southwest 2025 for an interactive exhibit that can be dialed into from other exhibits at the show.

The tension in the room was palpable, though it wasn’t necessarily due to the current conversation.

Cisco had his arms crossed, staring H.R. Wells down with an accusatory glare. "Just admit it," he said, voice laced with frustration. "You took the meta cuffs. They're gone, and you're the only one who doesn’t know how to keep his hands to himself."

H.R., lounging casually on a lab stool, tilted his head like an amused puppy. "Cisco, my friend, why on Earth would I, of all people, need meta cuffs? I’ve barely had the chance to meet anyone in this universe, let alone..."

He paused dramatically, his smile growing mischievous as his eyes sparkled. “...engage in... activities requiring such, uh, enhancements.”

You were mid-sip of your hot chocolate when the implication slammed into you like a speeding bus.

Eyes wide, you sputtered, coughing violently as the drink went down the wrong pipe. Tears prickled at the corners of your eyes as you tried to steady your breathing, your face practically glowing crimson.

"Whoa!" Caitlin rushed to pat your back, concern written all over her face. "Are you okay?!"

“Y-yeah!” you choked out between coughs, waving a hand. “Just—just fine!”

But you weren’t fine. Oh no. The moment H.R.’s words registered, your brain conjured an image so vivid it was impossible to dismiss.

You, on a bed. Him, leaning over you. His eyes full of mischief as his fingers brushed against your wrists, cold metal locking into place—

"Y/N?" Caitlin’s worried voice brought you back to the present, but your blush deepened as you caught H.R.’s curious gaze.

He grinned, clearly amused by your reaction. "Now, now, no need to choke. I was simply pointing out how little time I’ve had for... recreational pursuits."

Cisco groaned, throwing his hands up in exasperation. "Can you not make everything weird, H.R.? We're talking about stolen tech, not your lack of a dating life!"

"Hey, you brought up the cuffs," H.R. quipped with a shrug. "I’m just clarifying my innocence. I’d have no use for them unless..." His gaze flicked toward you for the briefest second, playful and almost challenging. "...someone gave me a reason."

You coughed again, burying your face in your hands as Caitlin’s concern turned into a knowing smirk.

"That’s enough!" Cisco snapped, stomping toward the door. “I’m done with this conversation. Caitlin, Y/N, if he starts talking about roleplay or whatever, don’t call me!”

The lab door slid shut behind him, leaving you, Caitlin, and H.R. in an awkward silence.

Caitlin broke it first, raising an eyebrow at you with a sly smile. "You sure you’re okay, Y/N?"

"Yep! Fine! Totally fine!" you squeaked, refusing to meet anyone’s gaze as you grabbed your drink and practically bolted from the room.

Behind you, H.R.’s laugh echoed, warm and teasing. "Well, wasn’t that interesting?”

❤: Which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom?

Caitlin, I think, gets mischaracterized a fair bit. She is very sweet to her friends, but the fandom doesn’t often talk about her being brusque and blunt at times, especially while dealing with grief (for which, by the way, she has very cold (pardon the pun), sometimes destructive coping mechanisms—as shown in s8, but even before that, in s4…both times when she was desperate to get Frost back)

💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?

Jesse is more of a reckless teenager than I think people realize. A good chunk of the fandom (mostly because of the show, tbh) acts like she’s always in the right and always making good decisions, but…this is not exactly true.

For one thing, her leaving Central with Zoom still on the loose. Her friction with Harry makes sense—he’s shielded her from how far he’s willing to go for her, and that’s a hard thing to come to terms with. And, as previously pointed out to me by @angst-is-love-angst-is-life, she’s safer somewhere that isn’t Central City with Zoom out and about. Which is fair. However, they’re on an entirely unfamiliar Earth, and Jesse just kinda went exploring as though there are not a million bad things that could happen to a teenage girl with no powers or fighting skills out on her own. She didn’t tell anyone, she only told Harry she was leaving and didn’t say where…like geez, girl, something bad could’ve happened to you and no one would’ve ever known!!

It would be one thing if she was going to someone she knew, who had powers, who was outside of Central. I could get behind that. But she was just wandering aimlessly! She got on a bus to a city she had no idea about, in which she knew no one, on an Earth she’d never been to!

Plus, when Harry did go after her to find her...in their first conversation, she directly compares him to Zoom. Nice, Jesse. I'm sure he appreciates that considering he spent months trying to save you from Zoom 💀

Also, as much as I love her besting Savitar…going after him alone was reckless, and I’ve always resented a little how everyone celebrates her punching HR as though he wasn’t just trying to keep her safe (like Cisco was!!). Savitar is a very experienced speedster who knocked Barry around like a ragdoll, and Jesse only beat him by fighting smarter, not harder (and with a little nudge from HR). It could’ve gone way worse. Wally was already in the Speed Force—they could've been down two speedsters instead of just one!

💔: If you had to remove one major character from the series, who would you choose?

Sorta feels like a similar question as “if you had to pick a major character to kill” 😅 though in the spirit of things, I’ll give a different answer than I gave for that one: Sherloque, who was by far the weakest of the Wells for me.

Sherloque was investigating Nora, but…they had Ralph, a PI, who was (to some degree) part of the Team by that point—the stakes would’ve been way higher if he was the one investigating her.

Hmm Harry Wells for the character ask game?

one aspect about them i love

Only one? :D

He's an actions over words guy, so while he can be suave and polished when he needs to be... it's usually because he's basically wearing a mask. It's practiced words and attitude, he's playing the part of CEO of STAR Labs. When he's being honest and spontaneous, he's much more raw and struggles with his words. Trips over his tongue a lot, has moments of lethologica (the inability to remember the right word - aka tip of the tongue syndrome), stammers when upset, has other people (often Cisco) outright speak for him.

But no matter what Harry is or isn't saying, his actions speak loudly. He pays attention to the people around him - he notices Cisco having a nosebleed when the Reverse Flash is in custody when no one else seems to - and he puts himself in harms way to protect those he loves because he cannot bear for them to be harmed themselves (likely the root of his S4 difficulties with Jesse). When he's unable to voice his feelings about Tess to Jesse, he builds a device that lets him share those emotions and memories anyway.

one aspect i wish more people understood about them

Harry's control issues come not from arrogance but from trauma. That's not to say he isn't arrogant, but his micromanaging of Team Quick that got him kicked out wasn't him feeling like Jesse was incapable of handling things without him. But from the trauma of her having been kidnapped for months with him not knowing if she was alive or dead. Having her used against him to force him to work against people he'd grown to care about. Her running away and him, again, not knowing where she was but this time it was her choice and both times it was his fault.

Part of him feels like if he can be there, then he can stop the bad things from happening. That he can take the safety that protects him and give it to her. Like when her protective headphones failed, so he gave her his. If he can just think of every possible way something can go wrong, then he can ensure it doesn't.

He doesn't just do that with Jesse - he does it with Team Flash. They should have waited to bring back Barry because maybe he'd have thought of something they didn't and then there wouldn't be bus metas dying. Maybe if he could just think faster, better, less encumbered by his self doubts he could plan for all contingencies and keep his friends from getting hurt or dying in their dangerous fights...

Harry's a control freak not because he thinks he's better than everyone else, but because he doesn't. But he has to try to be there to protect them anyway.

one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character

He's autistic. Undiagnosed and it would probably never occur to him to seek a diagnosis out, but it informs a lot of his behaviors and unwitting coping techniques.

He was a soldier at some point and has PTSD from that. Possibly the War of the Americas, depending on how old Hunter Zolomon is supposed to be. Maybe some conflict that happened afterwards. Harry has some mannerisms that would fit having been in the army at some point, so it really just fits. And I think it was at this point in his life where he first met Tess.

Harry's arospec. Demiromantic most likely. He's not interested in labels for himself - he's how he is, why is naming it important? - so he'd probably never really identify that way himself. But Tess was the first person he ever fell in love with and it was because they had a bond between them already.

one character i love seeing them interact with

Cisco. Whether their relationship is interpreted as platonic or romantic, they just get each other in a way they don't with anyone else. Cisco and Barry come close, but Cisco and Harry are just on the same wavelength. They finish each other's sentences and are in sync when working on tech together. Harry is always hyper aware of when something is wrong with Cisco and Cisco understands Harry, almost instinctively, in a way no one else - not even Jesse - does.

one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more

Jesse. I do get that her availability was limited due to other commitments at times and at others it was down to limited budget and having to pick and choose guest stars, but...

She's his daughter and so much of Harry's trauma has to do with her. I wish they'd been able to spend more time together on screen to show both of them in their struggles to connect with each other. Harry having to accept Jesse as an adult that he can't shelter and protect anymore and Jesse having to recognize that her dad being imperfect and flawed is okay.

one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character

As mentioned above, Harry met Tess while he was a soldier. I'd like to think maybe she was a nurse or MD having to put up with Harry being a completely awful patient and somehow charming her anyway.

Cisco visited Harry a lot during S5. Since Cisco didn't discuss ditching his powers much with Barry or Caitlin - for them he just kinda went from 'I like my powers' to 'I'm gonna get rid of my powers' - it was Harry he talked a lot to about the downsides of his abilities and his deeper reasons for wanting to get rid of them. And he had Harry's support, despite them both knowing that it'd mean fewer visits between them since they'd be dependent on tech that required lots of power to bridge realities instead of Cisco being able to breach over on a whim. It was a much harder decision for Cisco than shown on screen.

Harry isn't dead. When artificial Speed Force was destroyed, it released the energy of all the Wells, not just Timeless!Wells, and sent them all back to where they belonged... or the nearest equivalent. Possibly causing lost worlds to be restored in the process thanks to the new multi-verse existing. So Harry, HR, etc... they all get a second chance at life. Some with weird and unexpected powers, like Timeless!Wells, and with some echoes of other Wells memories. But he's alive. And so is Jesse. And I refuse to believe otherwise. (Timeless!Wells only thinks the others are dead because it's the hypothesis that makes the most sense to him.)

For a moment she thinks she has to have misheard Cisco. Not because what he said came across as though he'd been gargling mouth-wash with his lips pressed together while he was underwater. No, rather than the Charlie Brown Teacher sound effects, every word is clear and sharp and absolutely his voice in her ears though he's a respectable distance ~the other side of the table~ from her. Such an unexpected question and heard in a way she's unused to manages to scrunch her face in confusion. First, Cisco is never really comfortable talking about things like that. Idle discourse while they're working ranges the gamut of favourite video games, worst comic adaptations on streaming services, the nature of scientific advancement and the ethics they are bound in. Whenever she teases him about anything personal or untoward he tends to deflect with shyness and humour and in a lot of ways it feels like she's torturing him for no real reason. Second, she can't begin to understand why exactly he was asking. Was he considering getting his own piercings? Is he seeing someone and he needs to get some advice about how to work his way around them? Which brings up a more important question which is why he hadn't mentioned he'd met someone? Since when had she been out of the loop and how had she missed something so huge? "Uh." Ah yes, the eloquence of her intellect. Any day now, they're going to come along and confiscate her S*T *A*R Lab ID card and send her packing. Exactly what the Admiral would expect and would use at his pleasure to flay her alive. She keys in one more sequence before she slides out of her chair and comes around to Cisco's side of the table. This is a show-and-tell matter. She turns her head to the left so he can see her ear plain as day, and the four total she has there. "Lobe, and upper lobe," she says, pointing to the two lowest and most natural looking ones. Today, there's a crescent moon with a jewelled star in the lobe, an actual diamond solitaire in the upper. "Tragus" This is the opal stud in the bit of the ear attached to her upper cheek. Then she touches the silver ring and ball on the upper outer rim of her ear. "Helix." Then she shifts and offers him her right profile and the three there. The bar is the first one she points out. "Industrial." A matching solitaire diamond in the upper lobe, then a sort of tribal faux ruby in the lobe. "Bu wait, dere's more," she winks. She never takes her eyes off his face as she reaches down and unbuttons her jeans from first to last, and shimmies the denim down low enough that he gets a decent view of black lace against her skin. Three little aquamarine studs draw the eye to her narrow hip bone. "Sub-dermal implant. Dis one I got talked into when I was small kine tipsy." John had told her it was for protection. He'd held her head and whispered into her ear until the very last thing she was thinking about was someone cutting into her flesh and implanting metal into her body. If she was honest with herself, she's pretty sure John could have talked her into anything that night, and all the ones that came after before he disappeared from her life. But Cisco doesn't need to know that. To cover the sudden change in her expression, she turns around, back to him, and raises her shirt up a little. "An' I always keep small kine of home with me wherevah I go. Dis is symbolic of my aumakua, my islands, an' dere beauty." She doesn't mention or show him the other tattoos. They haven't gotten quite that close. "Now I'ma beatcha t' da punch an' say… no I don' got nipple piercings or ones…ah… down dere. I don' see da appeal, an' hand f' God, as a medical doctor, havin' dem can actually cause you to eventually lose sensitivity in dose places. So if ya considerin' piecings on ya… bits… my advice is…yeah, naw, brah."

Oh my gosh, yes! I’ve seen Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and I absolutely loved that show! I was (and still am) such a huge Coulson fan—he’s the heart of everything. And you’re so right, the Caitlin/Cisco dynamic is so similar to FitzSimmons! They’re both adorable and hilarious in their own ways, and I love those kinds of duos.

As for Stephen Strange, I do like him, but it’s more because I adore Benedict Cumberbatch than the character himself (though Strange has definitely grown on me). I’m definitely more of a Tony Stark fan—he’s my ride-or-die Marvel fave. But girl, if you think you have a type, wait until you hear mine! I’m obsessed with redemption arcs and morally complex characters: Loki, Eobard, Snape, Rumplestiltskin—you name it. And I also have a thing for intelligent, quirky, or eccentric characters: Tony Stark, Sherlock, Harry Wells, Rupert Giles, the Doctor… I could go on forever. 😅

And to answer your question: yes, I’ve always written! My first fanfiction was when I was 12 (don’t laugh, but it was about Clopin from Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame). Then I moved on to writing about other Disney characters, and from there, I branched out to Psych, NCIS, Bones, and eventually Doctor Who. But my big turning point was Loki—I fell hard for him and wrote about ten different fics over the span of a few years.

He just kind of Exists to me 🤷‍♀️ I also didn’t like Caitlin/Julian (hence “canon’s not real if I don’t look at it”). I found him kinda off-putting tbh. The show’s no stranger to jerk characters (Harry, Ralph), but Julian doesn’t really have the charisma to endear him to me like Harry and (to a lesser extent) Ralph do.

Also, he was only really there a) for Caitlin’s plotline (and his inclusion in all of it fell flat for me) and b) for the Alchemy red herring (which, as with Savitar pre-reveal, was a waste of time imo)

Kamilla Hwang:

So admittedly I used to be a lot more neutral towards her, if only because I felt she and Cisco were kinda thrown together by the writing and not given a ton of development as a couple. I…still somewhat feel this way, but I also like the two of them together…and as far as Cisco ships go, Kamisco’s my favorite 💞 (Goldenvibe is second for me, and I’ve been warming up to that more lately too)

Also, since Kamilla is your favorite, I’ve become fonder of her and Kamisco through following you 🥰 Kamilla is sweet, driven, and when the show does allow them to spend time together onscreen, they seem to get each other in a very special way. It’s not my favorite ship, but I find it a sweet one regardless.

As for “the fandom’s so mean”…something I’ve noticed is how some Caitlin/Cisco shippers tend to write Kamisco (and Kamilla, by extension) as very boring/bland/not right for Cisco. Which…fine, people can have ship preferences, but I remember one fic in which a character told Cisco, “[Kamilla’s] nice, but you deserve better than nice”, and that irked me.

Like…I get that Kamisco isn’t as developed as Caitlin and Cisco’s friendship, and even I shipped Caitlin/Cisco for a time, but…it rubs me the wrong way to see a white woman prioritized over a WOC as Cisco’s love interest when canonically, he’s only ever romantically been interested in said WOC and not the white woman. I get the fondness for Caitlin/Cisco, but if you need to throw Kamilla, a WOC and Cisco’s canon love interest, under the bus to do it…I question how strong your ship really is.

(Fun fact, fics like this are part of the reason I don’t really ship Caitlin/Cisco anymore!)

Joe West:

So…I have mixed opinions. I love him in most of the show, especially his relationships with Barry, Iris, Cisco, and Wally. Even his dynamic with Harry in s2!

I don’t, however, like him in s1 with Iris, and even with Barry, mostly pre-reveal. When he’s shooting down Barry at every turn, making him feel stupid, not even entertaining the idea of the impossible, not even stopping when he sees Barry’s given up the fight…yeah, that was sucky of him. It shouldn’t have taken Iris’s intervening for him to back off.

And with Iris…the lying, the gaslighting, the coddling…listen, I get he’s overprotective, but he is way moreso of Iris than Barry. Keeping her out of the loop for so long and not even apologizing to her?? Joe, Barry made his choice, but you also asked him to do it! You lied to Iris for months and acted like she was crazy when she mentioned seeing the Streak! You even got mad at Barry for Iris’s choice to put her name on her blog!

And that stuff with Eddie…ugh, that’s infuriating. The way Joe acts so entitled to her love life in s1, the way he denies Eddie permission to propose for ages just because he thinks he knows better than Iris who she should marry?? And the show doesn’t win any points with me for treating him as being right for that.

Oh, and also Armageddon?? When he yells at Barry and Iris for wanting to let Thawne die?? Saying they’d be destroying their family by doing so?? JOE CAN YOU BFFR?? We’re talking about EOBARD THAWNE! Killed Nora Allen, framed Henry Allen, stalked your son-in-law, killed Cisco, killed Eddie, killed your granddaughter, changed time and almost married your daughter??

I do love him in the rest of the show though, I think he’s a great fountain of wisdom and his relationships with his kids shine (hence the square with all the hearts, because when those relationships are at the forefront outside of s1, it’s like magic). It’s just those instances when I dislike him.
