I just realized I never posted this?? So anyway, here is Cobble, part of the protagonist group for my upcoming comic Eye of the Storm. He is our "main character" for the Border Colony.

Little bit of backstory under the cut! :]

Born to unknown parents and found when he was just shy of a moon cycle old, barely old enough to be weaned, Cobble had a rough start to life.

The colony had been aware of the unstable building just inside their territory, and they knew it was incredibly close to collapsing. So when a patrol noticed smoke on the horizon, Cicadashell, the leader of the colony, went with them out to take a look to ensure the fire didn't spread out of control.

They don't know how the fire started or how a kit that small got inside, but when they heard the cries from the smoldering rubble, Cicadashell was quick to jump through one of the windows. The patrol tried to follow, but the collapsing ceiling locked them out. And locked Cicadashell inside.

Luckily, rain wasn't far off. The fire was out, but the wreckage of the building was still dangerous. The patrol had gone back for help, and by now, the entire colony was gathered looking for their leader. Fidgetleg was the one that spotted the fur, sticking out from under a beam.

They were too late for Cicadashell, and the little kit was frighteningly still. Aspensight could barely hear the broken wheezes in his tiny chest. He had to send for the neighboring healers. He had only completed his training a few moon cycles ago, and he had no idea what to do.

By the time it was clear the kit would survive, almost a moon had passed. Fidgetleg, who had pulled him from the rubble, had grown attached to the little ball of fur. He discussed it with his mate, Sugarbee, and they decided they would adopt him.

It became clear that something was different about him, though. He was always aloof as a kit, preferring to stare at nothing rather than play. It's like he was seeing things that weren't there. They brought their concerns up to Aspensight, hoping maybe he could find some answers, but he was just as lost as them. Until one day, when Aspen was watching Cobble play alone in the clearing. Except, it looked like he was playing with someone, tossing the shell of a cicada back and forth.

Cicadas are symbolic of personal change, renewal, rebirth, transformation and awakening from ignorance to enlightenment. . This is because, unlike a butterfly, moth, or other insects that undergo complete metamorphosis, cicadas do not have a pupal state. They transform from one fully-functioning state to another. . And so, the cicadas transformation is similar to that of human beings. Because, when a human being undergoes a personal change, they too remian in their human form. .
