Boxelder Bugs (Boisea trivittata)

Missoula natives know all too well about the annoyance of Boxelder bugs. Many people find themselves competing with these for the first peek of sunshine in Spring. In Fall, a second swarm emerges and this time people are competing for the last bit of sunshine before Winter.

Boxelder bugs cluster in large numbers and enter your home through small gaps and voids in search of food, shelter and water. They feed almost entirely on Box Elder, Maple and Ash tree seeds. Nymphs are bright red in color while adults are dark brown with red markings on their wing tips, and about half an inch long. Although they’re not a standard pest, Boxelder bugs are quite irritating. Many people don’t realize something can be done to avoid being swarmed by these in the Spring and Fall.

Check out these tips for methods on Boxelder bug control:

•    Dust around windowsills with diatomaceous earth.

•    Use Anura Organic Insect Control by mixing 4 oz for every 1 gallon of water. Spray insects directly as a contact killer, or on their favored surface for a 2 week lasting repellency.

•    Spray the exterior of the home in areas that receive the most sunshine.
