A surviving summer fanfic explaining why Summer's dad was never mentioned.

I still remember the first time I saw her. She was so small, so wrinkled, so... in need of protection and help. My little Summer. Margot had her nestled on her chest, a blanket wrapping around her in a fashion that only let her face peek out. A feeling of wonder overtook me. Did I really have a part in making that mound of flesh? Was she really my kid? Did I really get to raise her? Along with Margot? That was, that was a big responsibility. Maybe I wasn’t ready for this. Maybe I didn’t have what it took. I turned to leave and was almost at the door when I heard Summer grunt and squirm. She could make noises? I went back into the room and stood nervously beside Margot, unsure of what to do with my hands. 

Margot looked up at me, sweat and tears still staining her face. She managed an exhausted smile, ‘’Do you want to meet her?’’ 

Would she be safe with me? If I held her, would she shatter? Would she be scared of me? I was a big guy after all, and all the kids in our neighborhood ran away from me when I was outside. Was my daughter going to be just like them? I would never hurt her, and if I had it my way, no one ever would. But what would it take to convince her of that?  

Margot tugged on my sleeve, ‘’Chuck, she’s just a baby. She’s not going to hurt you.’’ 

I choked, ‘’What if I accidentally hurt her? What if--’’ 

Margot grabbed my hand and guided it to cup the back of Summers head. I was about to pull away when she opened her eyes and yawned. That was it. I was done for. My life would never be the same. I wouldn’t ever be the same. I was completely taken aback by how powerful babies could be. The rest of the world didn’t matter, all I could see was my little girl and my wife, the two most important people in my life, together, and safe.  

Safe. I had to make sure they were safe. I looked at the nurse who was monitoring Margot, ‘’There weren’t any complications, were there?’’ 

He looked up from his clipboard, ‘’No, both the mother and the baby are completely fine. They just need a bit of sleep and then they’ll be able to leave in the morning.’’ 

Wishing I had studied midwifery so I could tell for myself if there was something wrong with either of them, I looked at the monitors and machinery, trying to figure out what they meant. I had to know, I needed to make sure that they were okay.  

Margot kissed my hand, ‘’Honey, I’m okay. We’re both okay. Do you wanna hold her?’’ 

I don’t know how it happened, but I ended up cradling my baby girl, cooing and rubbing her back. I really got to be her dad? That was the greatest thing I’d ever be. Her dad. Forever. 

Three years later... 

‘’Daddy?’’ 

Wakefulness slowly began to seep into my consciousness, pulling me out of the depths of my mind. I cracked open my eyes, ‘’Summer? What's wrong?’’ 

Summer gripped her stuffed bear closer, ‘’Mommy’s crying.’’ 

I froze. Why would she be crying? Was somebody sick? Dead? Hurt? Moving away? Had she been fired? I closed my medical textbook and stood up, ‘’Where is she?’’ I put my glasses on. 

Summer grabbed me by the shirt and pulled me into the living room, stopping at the door and giving me a look that said to go in and check on her. I strode over and knelt beside her, ‘’Margot? What's happening?’’ 

She whipped her eyes and looked at me, ‘’I just got a message from my agent, and she said--’’ she burst into sobs again and buried her head into my chest. 

I wrapped my arms around her and rubbed circles into her back. I knew what her agent had said she had a new project in a foreign country. It had happened so many times. This time her agent hadn’t even given her the decency of a month's break. Seriously, what was wrong with them? I loved the work Margot did, it brought about change for the better, it was important. But I drew the limit when it upset her. I wanted to tell her to just ask for an extension or at least a raise, but now was not the time. Right now, she needed me, and to be honest, I needed her as well.  

‘’Here’s toilet paper.’’ 

I looked down to find Summer holding up a toilet roll, futilely trying to stop her lower lip from quivering. 

Gently, I reminded her that she could cry too, that I didn’t mind and that it was healthy.  

She looked back at me through glassy eyes, ‘’Mommy goes away all the time, it’s not sad anymore.’’ 

Tears stung my eyes as I took what she said in. Children weren’t supposed to be used to their mothers going away for weeks on end. They were supposed to be bowling their eyes out and begging their mothers to stay, or to take them with them.  

I pulled her into our hug. I knew she was sad too, and no poorly concealed act was going to convince me otherwise. Soon enough she was crying as well, her little body shaking along with Margot's. I whispered into their ears, ‘’I’ll fix it.’’ I didn’t know how I was going to fix it, but I was going to figure it out. If I was too small to fix it, I’d just get bigger. I had to. That’s what my dad taught me. 

Eventually they both fell asleep, and I took off my glasses.

‘’All I’m saying is you could ask for someone else to go,’’ I handed her the mug. 

She rubbed her four-head, ‘’I’ve already told you. You don’t turn Cassy Lane down. If she gives you a job, you consider yourself lucky.’’ 

I bit down the argument that always came to mind when we discussed her work. She wasn’t in the head space to hear logic. She just wanted to chew my ear, and if that meant she would be more logical later, I could wait and let her vent. 

I folded my hands, ‘’Cassy, that’s the new director at your form, right?’’ 

Margot nodded as she sipped her coffee, ‘’She was enrolled last year.’’ 

I dug my fingernails into my palm as I struggled to remain neutral, ‘’Wasn’t that the week before Summer’s birthday?’’ 

Margot swallowed, ‘’Mhm.’’ 

I didn’t consider myself a violent man, but sometimes I really wanted to throw a brick at Cassy. An unpopular thing for a man to say, I know. 

Collecting myself, I asked, ‘’She has a bunch of other photographers, right?’’ 

Margot frowned, ‘’Chuck, if you’re about to suggest that I tell her to pick another photograph, think carefully.’’ 

Smoothing out my anger, I raised my hands in surrender, ‘’I wasn’t going to go there. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt over the past year, it’s that Cassy Lane can’t be reasoned with. By anyone.’’ 

Margot grimaced, ‘’That’s right.’’  

Choosing my next words carefully, I asked, ‘’So when do you leave?’’ 

She sucked in a breath, ‘’Day after tomorrow.’’ 

‘’Do you need any help fighting with the airport?’’ 

She laughed dryly, ‘’No, you just stick to your textbooks and guns,’’ she paused, ‘’The Gibsons offered to babysit Summer during the week from twelve to five while I’m gone.’’ 

I really wished I could take care of Summer myself, but my job as a cop and studies to be a doctor only enabled me to spend three hours at best with her. But what else could I do? I needed to provide for my family, and the way the economy looked, I wouldn’t be able to do that for long with a cop's salary. For the sake of my pride, I asked, ‘’Maybe we should hire a sitter.’’ 

Margot shook her head, ‘’I don’t feel like looking for one right now. Not until this trip is over.’’ 

I rubbed her back, right in the spot she always carried the most tension, ‘’I could do it.’’ 

She lifted an eyebrow. 

I raised my hands, ‘’Okay, fare point.’’ 

She rested her head on my shoulder, ‘’Just don’t let her or yourself die, okay?’’ 

I kissed the top of her head, ‘’Okay.’’ 

One year later... 

I buckled Summer’s seatbelt and climbed out of the back seat. Before I could close the door though, Summer tugged on my jacket. I looked down at her, ‘’Is something wrong Sums?’’ 

She looked at me dead in the eyes and asked, ‘’We’re not going to crash, right? You're not going to die?’’ 

I turned and looked at Margot, whose face I’m sure mirrored my shock. I turned back to her, ‘’No, I’m going to be fine. We’re going to be fine. Why do you ask?’’ 

She frowned and started nervously twiddling her thumbs, ‘’I don’t know. M’ just askin’.’’ 

Again, I wondered if it was a good idea to explain why we couldn’t see my mother anymore. Explaining the concept of life and death to a kid as young as Summer might not have been my best of ideas, but what else was I supposed to do?  

Margot squeezed herself into the car, ‘’Are you okay Summer?’’ 

Summer looked up at her with watery eyes, ‘’No dying?’’ 

Margot shook her head and wrapped Summer up in her arms, ‘’No dying. Daddy and I aren’t going to die,’’ she looked back at me and gestured for me to get into the other passenger seat. 

Once I was squeezed in, I started working through her hair, ‘’No dying, not today.’’ 

Summer bit her lip, ‘’Promise?’’ 

My throat clenched, ‘’I can’t promise that, but mommy and I will do our best not to die. Okay?’’ 

Summer sniffed and then nodded her head, ‘’Okay.’’  

Margot got out of the car, and I got into the driver's seat. While I was strapping myself in, Margot leaned against the open window, ‘’Keep an eye on her.’’ 

I nodded, ‘’Of course, see you tonight,’’ after giving her a peck on the cheek, we were off. 

As I drove through town to Summer’s preschool, I kept checking on her with the mirror. Maybe she was sick? Or hurt? Did she think she was going to die and just masked that by asking about myself and Margot. Had I been neglectful? I was literally training and studying to be a doctor, if there was really something wrong with her, I should’ve picked it up by now.  

She caught my eye and stuck out her tongue, ‘’It’s rude to stare.’’ 

I chuckled, more for her benefit than my own, ‘’Right, sorry.’’ 

She battled to cross her arms, then frowned, ‘’You should ask for my forgiveness.’’ 

I looked back at the road, ‘’You’re right. Summer, will you please forgive me?’’ 

Summer hummed in thought, ‘’Okay. I forgive you.’’ 

I glance back at her, ‘’Thank you.’’ 

Summer tried and failed to stop her giggles. 

I smile as I turn back to the road. 

Soon enough, we were at her preschool, and I was hugging her goodbye. I kneel in front her and hold her gently by the shoulders, letting her look down at me, ‘’Are you ready for this? you don’t need a day off?’’ 

She shook her head, ‘’No. Besides, Ari’s going to be there. He’ll take care of me till you fetch me.’’ 

I ruffled her hair, ‘’Okay. But if you change your mind, just ask your teacher to call me or mommy.’’ 

She nodded absently, already shrugging my hands off, ‘’Okay. I love you,’’ she kisses my four-head and runs off backwards, waving at me. 

I wave and smile after her. Getting off the pavement and dusting off my pants, I ignored the disapproving looks from the other parents and got into my car.  

Turning the keys and pressing the clutch, I reversed out of the parking lot. That’s when it hit me. I was waving goodbye to my little girl, hoping that she was okay, when a car crashed into the back of my pickup.  

I thought I was fine at first. I could talk, I could see, I could smell, I could feel the leather under my four-head, and I could taste the blood after biting my tongue. I could still move; I knew that because I could lift my head and check if Summer was running towards me or not. She wasn’t. Thank everything good in the world that she hadn’t seen me. She made it inside in time. She didn’t have to see her daddy hurt. 

Someone outside my car was screaming for an ambulance. At least I thought someone was screaming to get an ambulance until I realized I was the one screaming, my throat turning to sandpaper. I was much worse off than I initially thought. I wanted to examine myself, I really did. But wait, why couldn’t I breathe? What was happening to me? I shouldn’t be hurt. I had to protect Summer and Margot. I had to be bigger than this. I had to, I had to... I can’t think... I, I think I’m going to black out. I can’t die. If I'm losing consciousness, I better only be blacking out. I’m only blacking out. I’ll wake up, I will. I promise. I’m coming back Summer. I promise. I’ll always come back. Because I'll always be big enough. Just wait, okay Sums?

Great reads of 2024

Bye 2024, while you were a long and grueling year but at least there were some great reads to pass the time. In total, I read 333 books according to goodreads. I read a ton of horror, sci-fi, romance, and horror romances and will list some of my favorites and surprises by genre.

Favorite horror stories:

For being creeped and disgusted. Most of these stories deal with some real world nastiness like homophobia, transphobia, and racism.

Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle: Misha is a screenwriter being forced to kill his popular gay characters but what's that? His monsters are coming to life? Such a fucking blast.

The Reformatory by Tananarive Due: our MC is sent to a 'reformatory' where boys behaviors are 'corrected'. This is pretty horrific and forces the reader to confront the horrors of racism.

Compound Fracture & The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White: I recommend all three of AJW's books, CF is more thriller while TSBIT is full on body horror and violence.

Fluids by May Leitz: The most disgusting book I've read this year! Want to read about lesbians doing absolutely awful things to themselves and others due to desperation? This is for you!

The Library on Mount Char by Scott Hawkins: God has a bunch of children stuck in a library and bad shit is happening. Think a speedrun of Gideon and Harrow. Wild and fun.

The Woods All Black by Lee Mandelo: This novella focuses on our nurse MC forced to help an Appalachian town in the 1920's. There's racism, transphobia, and some horrific transformation sequences. This has one of the most memorable sex scenes I've read this year.

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters: A classic haunted house story. The creeping and building dread is so wonderful.

Favorite Romances:

These are sweet and fun romances. I enjoyed the audiobooks for each of these stories.

The Nightmare Before Kissmas by Sara Raasch: this is such a cute story that involves the princes of Christmas and Halloween. I'm not over that every time our Halloween prince curses silly plastic decorations appear.

Swift and Swaddled by Lyla Sage: Super sweet western romance with our golden retriever MMC and black cat FMC. Cute!

Favorite Horror Romances:

Come for the gorgeous covers, stay for the body horror, the rot, and violence that may end in romance.

Tenderly, I am Devoured by Lyndall Clipstone (ARC-TBR July 2025): gothic romance that I found so engrossingly written. Highly recommend if you're looking for an incredible gothic romance.

My Throat an Open Grave by Tori Bovalino: Leah wishes her brother away, at which point he's kidnapped by the Lord of the Wood and has to reclaim her brother. Beautiful and sad, more horror than romance.

Together We Rot by Skyla Arndt: This is cult horror, our MMC is a sacrifice slated for his father's cult and our FMC just wants to help.

Favorite Romantasies:

More fantasy than romance, these fantastical stories are both book 1 in a series and do a great job of setting the stage for some elaborate fantasy and eventual romances.

Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole: super fun, our FMC is a healer and the MMC is the prince and also a sort of demigod.

Nightstrider by Sophia Slade: This is a great start to a fantasy with two worlds--ours and a dream world. Little romance here but a really fantastical set up.

Favorite General Fiction:

Foster by Claire Keegan: this book is like 80 pages and is so good. We follow a girl sent to live with some older foster parents because her family are about to have another kid (I believe they already have like 9?). This was just so beautiful.

Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg: An exploration of queerness, gender, and power in the 1990s. This is a tough read but such an important part of queer history.

Blackouts by Justin Torres: A conversation between an old and a young man who explore and examine what it means to be queer interspersed with blackout poetry.

Horse by Geraldine Brooks: This explores the life of a horse through multiple perspectives. I'm not a horse girlie and I can't stop thinking about this freaking horse.

Favorite Nonfiction:

Truman by David McCullough: this behemoth covers ALL of Truman's life from birth to death and between. I found it enlightening especially before visiting Hiroshima.

Who Would Believe a Prisoner?: Indiana's Women's Carceral Institutions, 1848-1920 by The Indiana Women's Prison History Project: This is a collection of published articles by inmates at Indiana Women's Prison on the history of Indiana's Women Prison. The abuse and the ugliness surrounding the history of the prison is well explored.

Who's Afraid of Gender? by Judith Butler: I loved that Butler isn't fucking around this book. They postulate and describe where hatred and fear of gender come from and smashes every logical fallacy you can think of.

American Predator by Maureen Callahan: A detailed account of the murders and manhunt of Israel Keyes. Fast paced and quick true crime read.

Favorite Surprises:

These are all new authors for me. For all of these, I picked these up on a whim and was blown away.

The Theseus Duology by Mary Renault: a lovingly memoir-esque story of Theseus.

Death in the Spires by KJ Charles: this is a dark academia murder mystery. Think 'I know what you did last summer' but in old timely London. I've only read Charles' romances and oh boy was this a delight!

The Borrowed Hills by Scott Preston: this is about sheep farmers who plan a heist and things just go horribly wrong. So artfully written, such wonderful creeping dread.

Miracle Creek by Angie Kim: this is a courtroom thriller told from the perspective of several characters. Sort of slow moving in parts but I found this to be a breathtaking read.

hi, so.. i'm genuinely curious. why do you ship gwyn and azriel? because for me, i don't think gwyn has shown any romantic interest in azriel, and even he himself thinks they're not close enough to be friends. do you think sjm is going to throw all of elriel's moments away in previous books just for a ship built off of a spark in the chest and a private dagger lesson which happened off page?

because if she does, i think it will be fan service. major fan service.

You say all the E/riel moments but if you really care about what I have to say (as you felt the need to message me) I hope you'll actually pay attention to the things I'm telling you.

It's not all the E/riel moments. It's all the E/riel moments that were almost instantly followed up by Az's fixation on someone else or lack of true interest on his part.

Az figured out Elain was a Seer? He then went on and agreed that they shouldn't bother following through on her visions.

Az announced he'd get Elain back only after Cassian first said they'd get her back? He went on to disobey Feyre's orders to get Elain to safety so he could stay behind and save Feyre, risking Elain's life in the process. He also said he'd be the one who could also take Briar though it was Elain who helped save her, something Az never acknowledged. Just like he never acknowledged her saving him too when kicking the hounds and Cassian, Nesta when she stabbed the king.

Az gave Elain TT? That's because Mor begged him to sit out of battle. He sat out of the one thing he's known for, being the first to throw himself into danger, because the female he in canon loved at the time had tears in her eyes and asked him not to enter the fight. Also, he didn't bother to check on Elain after the war or provide his condolences for the loss of her father.

Az was so sweet taking the potatoes from Elain's hand? Only a few chapters before he was relieved not to have to get her a gift to help her celebrate her first Solstice after being turned fae and he went on to stare at Mor with heat and yearning while Elain sat in the room with them.

He stared at Elain's headache powder for a year while he imagined what she'd look like during sex? He was pissy towards Helion because of Helion's question on where Mor was. He interrupted Nesta's question to Feyre on whether Elain knew about the pregnancy to ask if Mor knew. And because he STILL looks at Mor with longing glances. "Few and Far between" doesn't equal Zero. It means they still exist though to a much lesser degree......all while he's supposed to be so captivated by Elain. He didn't bother asking Elain how she was doing after her fights with Nesta, didn't bother saying he'd help her train her powers. You know, important things when it comes to endgame couples.

Not to mention Az wasn't remotely affected by Elain's catatonic state, where she was withering away. Lucien was DEVASTATED. Az drew straws so he didn't have to stay behind and guard her. THAT'S supposed to be who I want for Elain? The IC was not allowed to enter the Rite otherwise it would guarantee death to them all. Nothing prevented Az from staying with Elain to guard her.

Did you read the TOG series? Did you see how many moments existed between Dorian and Celeana? Beautiful moments too. Did you see what transpired between Celaena and Chaol? She literally tells Chaol that she'd always choose him, she says that he is her home.

Tell me how anything that happened between Az and Elain is any more poetic than what we witnessed between Celaena and Chaol yet Sarah had no problems chucking that out the window.

How about the buildup between Nesryn and Chaol? Sarah had her travel with him to the Torres Cesme, she was willing to accept him with his disability yet Sarah knocked down that house of cards in Tower of Dawn.

Dorian and Sorscha?

Feyre was engaged to Tamlin for gods sakes.

I truly don't understand how you think buildup means anything in Sarah's books. Unless two characters are mates, Sarah will easily tear down whatever buildup once existed between two non mates.

Theia and Fionn were forbidden lovers yet she went on to stand by impassioned as he was murdered only to later be willing to give up everything for Aidas, her mate.

And though you'll refuse to see it, I think Sarah already ended them on Solstice. Az and Elain were doomed from the start and there has now been 7 months that have passed from Solstice until the events of HOFAS. We are given absolutely no buildup for the E/riel ship in all that time, not since Elain returned his necklace. There has been no on page bantering between them, no longing glances, not even an indiscernible peak out of the corner of their eyes at one another.

"All the E/riel buildup" except it's already gone? E/riels entire buildup amounted to an almost kiss that never happened in a bonus chapter which makes it pretty easy for Sarah to move on from considering she tore down Feyre's engagement to Tamlin within the span of a few chapters. And Feyre and Tamlin had an entire book dedicated to them.

You can ship E/riel still, of course, but you can't honestly act like it would be difficult for an author like SJM to walk away from whatever they had going since she had no issues breaking apart multiple other characters who shared so much more.

Serious question for you.

How many books do you read where at the very start of the novel, the two characters instantly want one another?

Did Claire want Jamie at the start of Outlander? Pretty sure she was married to and in love with her husband. She also tried to escape back to said husband after marrying and sleeping with Jamie.

I just read a book where the guy ends up helping a girl who was homeless and she's worried that he'll expect sexual favors from her as she's seen happen on the streets and he says and thinks "she's not remotely my type" though of course they end up together and she's the most beautiful thing ever.

Off the top of your head I'm guessing you can't tell me 5 books where the endgame couple starts the book already in love or romantically interested in one another. So why would Az and Gwyn not being true friends yet be a problem at all?

As far as Gwyn's interest or lack thereof, I don't even need the bonus but if after 2 years and knowing what Elain did during the war he still doesn't think she's capable of handling the darkness of the trove but after a few months he believes in Gwyn's ability to make it through the Rite, it's pretty obvious who the author is setting up as his love interest. Sarah's writing and preferred behavior for her MMC with his endgame person is not difficult to spot at this point.

While we don't currently have confirmation of physical attraction (something that could easily change with a simple change of pov), we do have confirmation of curiousity on Gwyn's part. And a lot of admiration on Az's side.

How is that not a wonderful jumping off point for these two characters? Az is no stranger to lust for beautiful females but he doesn't often give them credit for standing on their own two feet. And Gwyn's curiousity about Az, a male, after what happened to her, is a huge step forward already.

Gwyn started SF not having left the library in 2 years but by the end she was fine being alone with Az on the top of the roof in the middle of the night. She was teasing him over his title, "Shadowsinger."

I'm not sure how you don't see that as being playful / flirtatious. Does that mean she's in love with Az and wants to jump his bones? No, it's just the first hints we're seeing. I'd rather only see hints of something before two characters are ready to bang one out on page before they've even had a POV and shared any sort of meaningful conversation (which Az and Elain have never done, they have never spoken about anything of true importance). That's the difference between a romance book with sex and a book with smut.

As for Az, I'd much rather wait for his romance to build on page, where he's only focused on one female, rather than the shit-show that has been the Mor / Elain situation. Where he can't even admit to his best friend that he's over Mor in the same chapter he thinks how he's not thought of a plan on how to be with Elain beyond his sexual fantasies.

Elain deserves a hell of a lot better than that. And so does Gwyn. Which is why I'm glad Az isn't romantically interested in her at this point in time. Have you ever liked a guy who was panting over you and another girl? It's really not the romance E/riels like to pretend it is and I'd rather Az truly come to terms with his past with Mor and letting her go (something that he has not fully done) before he shows any romantic interest for his endgame person. But with Gwynriel I see that future potential. The banter already exists, she's a bit bloodthirsty like Az, she's seen him slaughter which means she's seen a little what Az is capable of versus how he's behaved around Elain, and his shadows are happy around her (which is better than how Az notes they tend to vanish around Elain after telling us how they're his companions). Not to mention Az won't suffer being around someone who already has a mate and will forever have that mate.

Crying fanservice because you don't get your way rather than paying attention to the author you're reading is a copout and I hope you respect Sarah's writing more than that.

Summary: So far the pregnancy has been bumpy but it’s getting better, Callie and Y/N are finally getting what they dreamed of. Though can they survive more stress as more chaos ensues.

******************************************************** Dinner with Derek and Meredith was supposed to be a relaxing night out, just the four of you, no kids or patients, a chance to catch a break from the busy life of surgeries and baby prep. You and Callie had been looking forward to it considering at seven months pregnant moments of peace had been rare.

The restaurant you had picked buzzed with life, and your hand found Callie’s, instinctively playing with her wedding ring as you adjusted in your chair and hand coming to smooth the silky button up covering your swollen seven month baby bump.

Seven months, you thought, seven months pregnant with her baby, something you never thought you see after all the heartbreak from several failed attempts and a your miscarriage. You smiled at her softly before she leaned in pressing a kiss to your temple and getting up to follow Meredith to the bar.

”You’re glowing,” Derek flashed his signature smile, leaning back in his chair as he nodded towards your bump.

“Thanks,” you chuckled a hand coming to soothe the kicks of your very active baby, “Though I think Callie’s the one who’s glowing, I’ve never seen her more excited… well except for maybe our wedding day.”

you both chucked, “She’s definitely proud, but she should be. You’ve both been through a lot.”

Before you could respond a stranger approached your table, a tall, broad man who carried himself with a confidence that made your skin crawl.

“Ahh lucky couple?” You heard a low sultry voice fall from his lips and turned your head to see his grin showing off perfect teeth, his dark eyes sweeping over you, lingering far too long before he addressed Derek, “you are one lucky man, my guy.”

“Excuse me?…” Derek blinked, his brow furrowing with a scoff.

“I mean look at her, that is a baby bump I see…” the man continued, gesturing towards you with a sly smirk, “Pregnant and gorgeous? Must’ve been one hell of a night to make that happen.”

“Uhm..” you looked at Derek tentatively.

”I’m just saying you’ve got it made, I wanna know the secret…” the man’s tone dripping with sleaze and mock sweetness as he looked to you, “you’re glowing sweetheart.”

“Wow,” you said your stomach tightening not from the baby but from sheer discomfort, you continued sarcastically, “and they say chivalry never dies.”

the man leaned closer to Derek seeing your discomfort, “I just wanna know man, how much was she? Did you win the lottery?”

“Okay stop…” Derek said sharply, his features becoming stern, “you’re way out of line.”

“Relax man, I’m just complimenting the lady,” the man grin widened, “she’s a total hot housewife, you should be proud.”

“Actually I’m…” you started but were cut off by Callie announcing her arrival.

”I’m back!” Callie said happily, a drink in her hand as she bent down to kiss you her touch soft and warm as her hand came to linger on your shoulder, her thumb brushing against your neck soothingly, “what’s going on?”

You heard him clear his throat and look away “…I’m happily married, and we’re both surgeons, thank you.” You smiled back, your smile laced with venom.

the man’s smirk faltered at you, “Wait… you’re married to her?”

“Yea…” Callie suddenly locked onto him and stood straightening up, “do you have a problem with that?”

“Figures a woman like her wasted on another woman… to bad for the kid.”

“I’m sorry?” You turned to fully face the man now standing before you.

“Excuse me?” Callie asked standing and protectively stepping in behind your shoulder her posture shifting as her expression hardened.

“You heard me… it’s unatural, a waste of someone like her,” the man motioned to you, “I feel bad for the kid too, two moms, no real dad in the picture.” He shot back.

“You need to leave, right now.” Derek commanded, his chair scraping harshly as he stood.

“Or what, you risk knocking a perfect hair out of place and letting the lady handle it for you?” The man scoffed, an arrogant smirk pulling at his lips.

“You have about three seconds to walk away before I make you regret coming over here in the first place…” Callie warned her voice low and sharp.

“Callie…” you quickly said reaching for her arm, “don’t… he’s not worth it.”

“Go ahead, make it ugly…” the man sneered, stepping towards Callie as Derek stepped in beside her.

Callie stood unflinching her flare icy, “I don’t mess around when it comes to my wife and child, so I suggest…”

Before she could finish the man lunged forward, his hand raised as if to shove her, “suggest what…”

In a single swift, clean motion Derek’s fist connected with the man’s face, sending him sprawling to the floor.

The shock of the moment hit you like a tidal wave and you gasped as a sharp searing pain tore through your lower abdomen, stepping back with a wince as you felt pain a hand coming to wrap securely under your bump.

“Y/N?!” Callie panicked immediately at the sight of you, her hand coming to wrap under yours before both hands came to cradle you face, “what’s wrong? Are you okay? Is it the baby?… tell me what you’re feeling.”

“I’m fine,” you said through gritted teeth as the pain didn’t go away, “it’s probably just Braxton Hicks.”

“Probably?” Callie echoed, “No mama we’re not guessing, we’re going to the hospital.”

“Callie,” you grabbed her wrist, “check on him… and Derek’s hand.” You motioned to the man laying on the floor.

“I don’t give a damn about him…Y/N, I need to make sure you’re okay… and you’re in pain, don’t even think about trying to be stubborn right now.”

“I’m fine, check on him…” She looked in your eyes seeing the stubbornness.

“I have her…” Meredith said wrapping an arm around your waist as you stood completely upright.

“Mer do not leave her side.” Callie commanded. She rushed to the man that now laid on the floor as Derek shook his hand, his knuckles red and bruising.

“ahh…” you let a small gasp slip from your lips feeling twinges of pain.

“Y/N?…” Meredith asked turning her attention to you, a hand gently coming to your shoulder, “Hey, what’s going on?”

“I think something’s wrong… I need to get to the hospital…” you whispered.

Meredith’s face went stoic as she pulled out her phone, one hand still wrapped around your back as the other held the phone to her ear, “Hey Bailey, page Dr. Montgomery… it’s Y/N, she’s seven months along and feeling pain. We’re on our way to Grey-Sloan now.”

Derek grabbed his car keys as Callie took Meredith’s place, wrapping an arm around your waist the other coming to your arm.

“Callie,” you murmured through twinges as you sat in the backseat, Derek speeding to the hospital, “Breathe, I need you to breathe.”

“I’m trying,” he hand trembled as it held yours, “I just keep thinking about…”

”Don’t,” you said sternly meetjng her dark eyes, “this isn’t like last time… I’m okay, the baby’s okay. We’re okay.”

You wiped a tear that fell down her cheek, “ I can’t lose you or this baby.”

“You wont,” you promised as another pain made you wince.

When you finally go to the hospital a team was waiting for you, Dr. Bailey and Dr. Montgomery ready with a stretcher.

“Okay mama, what’re we feeling?” Addison started once you were on the stretcher.

“I’m not sure, it’s low and sharp…”

“Okay well let’s get this figured out…” she smiled softly as the wheeled you in and she barked orders telling staff to clear out so she could get you right to OB.

When you finally got to the room, Callie was by your side watching every move they made, “Callie, mi amor, let her work.” You said gently squeezing her hand.

Finally after what felt like an eternity Addison reappears with a calm smile, “Good news: everything is fine. It was just an intense set of false contractions, most likely brought on by stress. Baby and mama are doing great… though from now on I would suggest bed rest and no intense surgeries.”

“None?” You whined softly, thankful though that everything checked out.

“Stubborn as always I see… I don’t want to see you in your feet for more than two hours at a time, any more and I will drag you out of the OR myself.” Addison poked as she saw you let out a smile of relief.

“Addison…” Callie called as she went to leave the room, your wife finally stopped pacing relief flooding her features, “Thank you.” Tears now falling dow her cheeks as Addison nodded and then ducked out of the room.

“Mi amor, come here…” you said watching as the adrenaline and panic started to fade.

”I’m sorry, Y/N… I should’ve been there sooner, I should’ve…”

“Stop,” you said lifting her chin to look in her tear stained eyes, “Calliope Torres, you did everything right.”

She slowly sat down next to you her hand coming to brush softly against your bump.

“Listen to this. Feel that?… the baby is fine, I’m fine.”

her hand trembled as she felt your baby kick, “They’re strong,” she whispered.

“Just like you.” You whispered softly, brushing a stray piece of hair from her face.

“You’re my everything, both of you, I don’t know what I’d do without you…” she leaned in her cheek resting against you baby bump.

“You’ll never have to find out…” you trailed running fingers through her hair.

Universos colapsan en un torbellino de palabras, dramatismo heroico y hip hop, donde Too $hort escapa a toda velocidad de la policía, a 2Pac le tiene la vista puesta desde lo alto de un rascacielos, y Public Enemy se abalanza sobre ti como un ejército de superhéroes invencibles. Este es el mundo de Alejandro Torrencilla, alias Torre Pentel, ilustrador madrileño que fusiona dos formas de arte, el cómic y el hip hop, a través de imágenes poderosas.

En este espacio intervenido por las artes gráficas y las emociones sonoras, encontró su lugar. Desde niño, Pentel se la pasaba re-dibujando las portadas de los discos de su padre, quien, aunque no era dibujante profesional, fue su mayor influencia. Luego estudió a Robert Crumb, Gilbert Sheldon, Daniel Clowes, maestros del cómic underground americano, un género que lo fascinó por la crudeza de sus caricaturas sarras.

Continuó sumergiéndose en el tebeo descubriendo a más autores de DC y Marvel, editoriales que antes descartaba. Estas, no obstante, fueron una fuente de inspiración y no sólo para él, sino para muchos raperos que se veían reflejados en sus personajes. Aquella conexión entre el hip hop y las tiras comicas se convirtió en el eje central de su obra.

«Creo que todos los raperos de los 90 y 2000 han crecido con los cómics, toda esa generación del rap ha crecido leyendo Spiderman, Batman, X-men… es algo generacional. Aparte, algunos han llevado ese anonimato del héroe (o villano) a su propio personaje como artista, por ejemplo, MF DOOM, Ghostface Killah, Czarface.»

La canción ‘Alwayz Into Somethin’ de N.W.A. era un ejemplo perfecto de cómo una historia contada a través de la música podía ser literalmente de vuelta al papel en una historieta. La idea de transformar la energía del hip hop en imágenes era algo que le emocionaba.

Ya había mostrado su habilidad para dibujar a raperos legendarios como Chuck D o Rakim. Sin embargo, su primer proyecto profesional relacionado con la música no fue con ninguno de estos artistas, sino con el grupo de jazz fusión Alpagarta. A partir de ahí, comenzó a crear más ilustraciones relacionadas con el hip hop, mejorándolas a mano sin recurrir a las facilidades de la pluma digital.

Fue su obra "Biggie X-Mas" para Cookin Soul la que le abrió nuevas puertas permitiéndole llegar a una audiencia más amplia. A partir de ese momento, su trabajo comenzó a ser reconocido internacionalmente. Esto marcó un punto de inflexión en su carrera, de allí en adelante todo fue en inglés.

Las redes sociales también hicieron lo suyo. Sus pinturas se difundieron rápidamente por Instagram hasta llamar la atención de Metro Boomin', un productor de renombre en la industria musical que se interesó por el trabajo de Pentel. La colaboración entre ambos resultó en la tapa de «Heroes & Villains». Le tomó días completos terminarla, pero con la libertad artística para plasmar su visión.

Después de esta experiencia, siguió refinando su estilo. Su proceso creativo es natural y espontáneo dándole rienda suelta a la inspiración. El no tener rutinas mantiene su mente fresca y puede tardar desde unas horas hasta varias semanas en un lienzo, todo depende de cómo fluya.

La música es una fuente de ideas, sus gustos muestran diversidad y apertura a nuevas tendencias. Es fan del rap de los 90, siendo artistas como KRS-One, Nas y Heather B algunos de sus favoritos. Sin embargo, también escucha a otros actuales como Tyler, the Creator, Joey Bada$$ o Raz Fresco.

Entre sus planes está en seguir creciendo como artista y expandirse a galerías, revistas, pintar viniles, ropa, y seguir fusionando su pasiones por las historietas y el rap.

Torres Pentel es un creador de tramas fantásticas donde los raperos son superhéroes con aventuras asombrosas. Con su lápiz e imaginación, convierte a los íconos del hip hop en héroes legendarios. Cada vez se involucra en proyectos más importantes pese a lo infravalorado que está del oficio del ilustrador en España. Este apasionado artista sigue adelante desafiándose a sí mismo superando sus propias expectativas demostrando que, con ingenio y constante mejora, es posible superar barreras.

As an anon asked about my hopes for this season's PD, I'm gonna write down my wishes for both Fire and PD (I don't watch Med actively though I may start now that Sarah Ramos and Darren Barnet have joined the cast...).

What I wish for every year: no drama for Stellaride. I know Severide's brother will cause clashes and there's gonna be tension over the whole baby thing. If they're going down that road, then let them go through it in an organic way. Let them talk, not fight.

New Chief. It would be nice if they went for something different than the usual "new guy challenges 51 but after 3 episodes he understands how great it is, submits to the 51 way and everyone loves everybody else". We've seen that billions of times. It would be much more interesting to see how instead 51 adapts to a different leadership style.

Also the new Chief has an ex-wife (so pumped for KaDee!). I would absolutely love a sort of "comedy of remarriage" thing. I'm a sucker for second chances.

Novak is super fun and it would be great to see her develop as a character on her own, not on the basis of a romantic relationship (already rolling my eyes at the whole vibe with young Severide). Let us see her be good at her job and have loads of fun.

Speaking of Novak. A true party girl, who I feel would get along very well with Trudy (who, we have established, had a certain reputation back in the day). I am hoping for some short interaction at some point. Imagine that! Throw Violet (aka the captain of Trudy's fanclub) into the mix and I'd be very happy.

The return of Annabelle Herrmann. That's it, that's the wish. I love that menace to society.

More quality screentime for Ritter.

Kylie coming back and staying on Truck.

Mouch, my beloved! Of course, I haven't forgotten you! Just keep him alive, doing stupid things with Herrmann, but I also want to see him study and prepare for the Lt. exam. Study session with Trudy anyone? 😏 She, of all people, would know how to make him pass that test.

We might be getting patrol back with Kiana. Our prayers may have been answered. I'm hoping for less character-centric episodes and more of a balanced, choral vibe where there's also space for levity. I will be disappointed, I know, but dreams never go out of business, right?

Let Kiana stay on patrol a while. I don't want her to jump right back onto Intelligence. It would be the same as they did with Torres and we need patrol.

A recurring Petrovic, if not a regular. I like her.

It would be time for people to get promoted. I think both Kim and Kevin would be ready at this point, although it seems there will be one promotion only.

More quality screentime for Kevin. Let his centric episodes/cases go beyond race.

I hope we will get to see the Burzek wedding. Keeping my expectations low on this and certainly I don't think we will get a crossover (not even Mouch as much as I'd like to), but I'd want to see some bits of the ceremony with everyone from PD there.

Also hoping for a throwback to THE wedding planner and Kim chucking down vodka at Trudy's wedding. Maybe Kim can get those $20 back.

I would still kill for a scene between Trudy and Mack.

As I wrote ages ago, and as I say every 3 seconds, more 👏🏻Trudy 👏🏻 on screen! 👏🏻 For Trudy to be involved more in cases, but also for her to have a more focused episode since she hasn't had one since friggin' S4. As I wrote here, I'd LOVE for Intelligence to pick up a case that links back to an old one Trudy worked on when she was in Robbery and Homicide and explore a bit of Trudy's career and past.

Anyone who knows me knows how hard I ride for LGBTQ representation, and since today is Bi Visibility Day, why not share some of my favorite bisexual characters?

This is a long ass list, so I'll keep the commentary short. I'll also try to keep it to the main characters, but there will inevitably be a few sides.

Rosa Diaz - Oh, the ways I love Rosa, she's mean, and yet she's kind. She moved because one person knew her address, and I want to live that life. Now, she is a cop, but she does leave the force in B99's attempt to continue the show after 2020.

Jaskier - Idk if this is one that people would mind getting into. The Witcher is a very confusing show, but, like, I love it. & Yennefer of Vendenberg is not bisexual, but she is a hot witch, so that's worth it.

Now, I can get into the characters that are extra special to me.

Marie and Jordan from Gen V - okay, these two are particularly special because Jordan has powers that allow them to switch between male and female presenting, and where else do we see the literal physical embodiment of a non-binary person? Also, there's a little slice of commentary about how they switch to their male form whenever they want to make a point, and they are nervous because they don't think Marie likes them in their female form, and that's rectified by the end. & Marie is, of course, besotted by them no matter their form, and she's got cool, blood-bending powers, and she's hot.

Ashley Davies - you will not find her on any of those listicles that publications make of the top bisexual characters, but you must know who she is because she is the character that started it all for me. On a little show called South of Nowhere about her and Spencer (a newly out lesbian) having a whirlwind high school romance. She's edgy and emotionally unavailable, she's kind of mean, but most of the time, she doesn't mean it, and she means a lot to me, so if you don't like her, keep that shit to yourself.

Kat Edison - my main bitch, my main squeeze, and the love of my life. She's a bisexual disaster, but that's okay because I love her. Heavily identify with her, and I hold her close to my heart.

Evan Buckley— I don't make a habit of relating to male characters; that's not my ministry, but Buck is a very special case. I didn't even click with him until 3x16, and then boom. I was rocked to my core by how much I relate to him, and now he's Bi! I don't have enough words yet to explain what that feels like but shout out to him.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DAVID GATES, the confessional singer-songwriter best known for the band Bread. Formed with the talented Jimmy Griffin and Larry Knechtel, Bread were champions of the “soft rock” genre, though they weren’t soft in terms of production, playing chops, and song craft. In 1970 their second album ON THE WATERS (a riff on Ecclesiastes 11:1) sliced out 3 Top Ten hits, with “Make It With You” going #1. Prior to Bread, however, Gates was a busy man. His first band, The Accents, included Leon Russell, and they backed Chuck Berry in 1957. Gates went on to work with Captain Beefheart, Pat Boone, Bobby Darin, Duane Eddy, Merle Haggard, Elvis Presley, Brian Wilson, and Glenn Yarborough all while writing songs for other artists and ekeing out a solo career. In 1966 his song “Saturday’s Child” appeared on the first Monkees album (and popped up on their TV show). Where New York politicians stand on Palestine

The majority of Democrats in DC, despite their voter base being overwhelmingly in support of a ceasefire, refuse to disavow the genocide in Gaza or call for ceasefire.

They are able to do this, to disregard the outrage of their constituency, because they feel certain that no matter how many letters we send, we will show up and vote for them when the time comes. They are certain their actions have no consequences.

Senator Chuck Schumer has received about $526.5k from Israeli lobby groups since 2019. He refuses to call for ceasefire. This is his going rate to endorse genocide.

Senator Kristen Gillibrand has received $174k from Israeli lobby groups since 2019. She refuses to call for ceasefire. This is her going rate to endorse genocide.

10/26 New York congressional representatives are Republicans. None have called for ceasefire. Palestinian genocide is core to the Republican platform.

Of the 16 Democrat representatives, only 4 have called for ceasefire. The following NY Democrat representatives have called for ceasefire. They were not swayed by money received from Israeli lobby groups.

Nydia Velazquez, 7: not swayed by $8k from Israeli lobby groups this cycle, nor the $12k the cycle before that or the $250 in 2020.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 14: not swayed by the confusing $27 from Israeli lobbyists. Received nothing last cycle and $150 before that.
