Bevor ich heute Abend zu neuen Dingen komme hier noch die Sache aus Moby Dick, die mich nicht loslässt.

Es geht um einen Pottwal!!!! Warum sehen wir hier einen Buckelwal????

Es fällt mir sehr schwer zu akzeptieren, dass Bob, dem Bilder so wichtig sind, hier einfach nur nach Ästhetik gegangen ist.

I mean der Pottwal-Aspekt ist ja nicht nur ein kleines, unwichtiges Detail. Ich habe doch nicht 300 Seiten über vergleichende Wal-Anatomie gelesen, nur um dann da einen Buckelwal auf der Leinwand zu sehen.

Wurde er etwa gecancelt weil er hässlich ist??

Vielleicht muss Bobby aber auch nochmal ein Seminar in Meeresbiologie belegen.

Henri Drake is not watching what is in front of him.

Why would he?

What’s happening in front of him is a beating drum. It’s exertion and pain and terror. And soon-

“Another five.”

– There will be blood.

He is not watching what’s in front of him.

Instead, he is watching what the gardener is doing outside, at the front of the estate.

“Stop hesitating.”

The trowel goes in, the dirt is turned, the seedling is placed, the dirt is returned. Patted down. Smoothed out. The trowel goes in.

“Diego. Stop hesitating. Or we will start again.”

The den doesn’t have any windows. It doesn’t have any sunlight.

It has the seating bank, the drain, the anchor points for the rig, the water feature against the wall. But no windows.

But Henri doesn’t need windows. He just needs to focus.

He’s met the gardener plenty of times now. He knows the feel of her cells when he reaches out to them. And a retina is just a retina. An optic nerve is just an optic nerve. His brain has never seemed to mind if the optic nerve is his or not. As long as he pays attention.

So he doesn’t need a window.

He can watch through the gardener’s eyes.

He can see the sunlight.

“Henri.”

Christopher’s voice always makes him picture caramel. Or butterscotch. Just made, hot as lava, and being poured in molten rivulets from a pot.

“Henri.”

He focuses on the turning of the dirt; it’s not interesting, but it’s rhythmic. The trowel goes in, the dirt is turned, the seedling is placed, the dirt is returned. The smell of soil has always made him crave to be buried alive.

“Henri.”

His face is slapped with a hard, sharp sting that jolts his neck, seizing something in the side that twinges up his jaw and down his shoulder. His eyes close. When he opens them again he doesn’t see the garden or the gardener’s gloves. He sees Christopher.

“You’re being very rude.”

He gives the automatic mumble of a student chastised for napping in class. “Sorry.”

“This is for you as much as it is for anyone. You should be watching.”

“I am watching.”

Christopher sighs, giving him the look of disappointment that Henri knows some of the others find withering. He feels indifferent to it himself. The prick is so far up his own asshole it’s hard to take the shit he says seriously. “You should know better than to lie to me, Henri.”

“I’ve been looking right at him this whole time.”

“And seeing something else,” Christopher says, quiet and definitive. “Haven’t you?”

Henri is very careful not to outwardly react. But his insides go cold. A jolt of electricity runs down both his arms and sits somewhere tingling in the centre of his palms.

Christopher doesn’t mean what he means, Henri tells himself. He doesn’t mean Henri’s in someone else’s head, watching through someone else’s eyes. He means Henri’s off with the fairies. Or day-dreaming. Or staring into space. Or one of the other million things that people usually think when he checks out.

But when he looks into Christopher’s eyes, there is a deep and knowing look, ripe with a self satisfaction that makes Henri want to sock him in the jaw.

“I’ve been doing this for longer than you have been alive. You don’t think I’ve seen every trick in the book?”

He doesn’t mean what he means. He doesn’t know. Not really. Surely not really. But still, Henri pulls his reach back from the gardener.

When Christopher speaks again, it is not just to him but to the cohort, “Would you like to apologise, Henri?”

Henri’s eyes slide to the boy with his hands hoisted high above his head, dark welts along his back. He’s shivering violently. Something drips from his face, hung head. Whether it’s tears or spit or sweat, Henri doesn’t know. He just knows it makes his own face itch.

“Sorry.”

“To?”

“Sorry, Jeremy.”

“Just Jeremy?”

Henri looks, then, to the boy with the cane in his hand. He looks grey and grim faced. The palm of his hand feels raw from gripping the cane too tight. Henri wonders if he’ll be sick after this.

“I’m sorry Diego.”

“For?”

Henri looks up searches Christopher’s eyes for the right answer. They are cold and piercing and delighted. “For phasing out.”

The man tilts his head to the side, a serene smile painted on that would rival the Mona Lisa’s. He wants something else. Henri takes another vague stab in the dark. He can still smell soil.

“It was disrespectful of me. And I should have been paying attention.”

Finally, Christopher nods, “Better.”

He takes Henri’s chin between thumb and forefinger and tilts it up to look him in the eye, voice dropping low again, speaking privately. “Disappear on us again and I will put the flogger in your hand. The time after that, it will be the flogger on your back.” His voice stays as smooth and as soothing as if he were calming a dog scared by a thunderstorm. If voices were ropes, Henri would strangle him with it. “Do you understand me?”

If Henri focuses enough he can feel the spider web of nerves that creep out over Christopher’s face. It would be so easy to light them up. Just focus a little more. Just flip the switch from neutral into agony. Easy as flicking the spark on a lighter. It would be so, so easy to make Christopher the one screaming.

“‘Yes, Christopher’ are the words you’re looking for,” the man prompts gently.

Henri grinds those words out through his teeth. His mouth is full of chalk. “Yes, Christopher.”

“Good boy.”

Christopher circles behind him, hands dropping onto each of Henri’s shoulders like weights holding down a balloon. Henri can feel the nerves in his own hand; lightning bolts over his knuckles, down each finger.

Christopher’s touch makes his skin crawl. Always has. Right now it’s like the man has sent a nest of spiders crawling down each of his arms, prickling and tickling. Every fibre of him is tense, prepared for the bite.

When Christopher speaks again, it’s to the cohort, “I know I promised a quick wrap up but unfortunately I think it’s important that we make sure this lesson sticks, so we’ll be starting again from ten. You have Henri to thank for that.”

Diego’s eyes slide to Henri’s. He looks exhausted. And furious. Kind of betrayed. And… yeah, that sucks actually. He and Diego got on alright.

The grief Henri feels at that is distant. Like poking at mud with a long stick.

“Alright,” Christopher says. Voice tender and coaxing, like helping a child back on his bike after falling off. “When you’re ready.”

This time when the cane strikes down, Henri has to work not to flinch. Just seeing it land, he can feel his own body light up in sympathy. Cells reaching for cells. Nerves sparking messages that aren’t meant for him but blast loud anyway. He grits his teeth. It fucking hurts. His eyes shut. He smells soil.

Christopher seems to know. His thumb rubs circles agains his collarbone. Spiders biting down. “Are you watching, Henri?”

Henri’s eyes open again. The cane comes back down. His nerves light up. “Yes, Christopher.”

He wishes he could be buried alive.

Why hasn't Rory called you back?? oh I don't know maybe because you are the worst thing to have ever happened to the world!!! Rory and Lorelai had every right to ghost him!! I mean that's basically what he did to Rory when he wasn't using her to get into Lorelai's pants!!

Inspiration Saturday 🐎

Going first this Saturday cos I’m feeling this one.

Highwayman fever has hit me … was already leaning that way and then I’ve started watching Renegade Nell (first 2 episodes so far) and I’m enjoying myself immensely. Ideas percolate. Madney and Buddie themes afoot and probably more fire family. I do tend to go overboard with an au and plot so bear with me…

It’s the tone of the cough that warns him exactly what Chim is going to ask. Eddie gives his answer in anticipation of the inevitable.

“I told you last time, no more.” He bangs the hammer down on the anvil for emphasis.

“You know I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t have to.”

Eddie sighs and wipes the sweat off his forehead without looking at his friend. “I have to think about Chris now.”

It’s the truth, now he’s on his own with Christopher he can’t be reckless with his own life anymore.

“We’ve been planning this one for so long but Bobby’s arm means…”

He trails off, Eddie knows very well what Bobby’s newly broken arm means. It means either Chim will go on his own or Bobby will ride with him regardless because there are people who depend on the money they bring in through unconventional means and neither of them will let those people down. Unless….

“Chim…” his regret is clear, it’s not that he doesn’t want to help, it’s just complicated now, before if anything went wrong Chris had Shannon, now she’s gone it’s just the two of them. Not that Bobby or Athena wouldn’t take him in, or Hen and Karen obviously but they all lead dangerous lives and he can’t anymore. Chim understands

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked but you know I can’t let Bobby come tonight so if anything goes wrong, you know where all my things are right? Give them to Hen, she’ll know what to do.”

“Chim just don’t go. It can wait.”

“It can’t, Hen’s got to fence the goods and we can’t change the date for that meeting. Also Lady Kendall’s carriage is traveling tonight. We have the plan. I’m going.”

Eddie sighs. “Fine, I’ll come, but this is the last time.” He holds up a finger in warning. “I mean it this time.”

Chim grins and rubs his hands together . “ you won’t regret it, this one will be easy, I can feel it.”

Eddie rolls his eyes and returns his metal to the forge.

He hopes so but either way it seems that tonight the Darling brothers will ride one more time even if their Captain won’t be joining them.
