Aromantic Awareness Week
A list of Queer films and Shows with little to no romantic plot lines, or at the very least the main plot focuses on friendship/found family, some may have romantic subplots but I really tried hard to find LGBTQA+ movies where romance wasn’t the main plot. This list does not contain headcanons, those are all valid I just wanted to try to find canon Aro characters for this if I could.
To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything (1995) (Drag Queens, no romance)
Wendell & Wild (2022) (Trans boy side character, no romance)
Strange World (2022) (Gay main character, no romance, he has a crush that’s barely in the film but this is about family)
Nimona (2023) (Nimona herself is AroAce)
Knives Out (2019) (the detective is a Gay man, no romance)
Pride (2014) (LGBTQ cast of characters, from what I remember there’s no romance)
I Am What I Am (2022) (I’ve seen a lot of praise from both Aro and Ace people about this film)
But I’m a Cheerleader (1999) (subplot but very much about found family)
Because there’s few films here’s some shows with canon Aro characters:
Koisenu Futari (2022) (JDrama about two AroAce people meeting and living together)
Heartstopper (2022) (while yes the main plot is romance Issac Henderson is AroAce)
The Owl House (2020) (some romance later on but Lilith Clawthorne is AroAce)
Cherry Magic (2020) (Fujisaki is AroAce)
Konya Sukiyaki Dayo (2023) (Tomoko is Aromantic)
Raise De Wa Chanto Shimasu (2020) (Takasugi Ume is Aromantic)
Kimi No Hana Ni Naru (2022) (Onodera Takara is Aromantic)
Happy Aromantic Awareness Week! I so hope some day you’ll have all the representation you could ever want! 💚🤍🩶🖤
(If you know of others please leave them in the comments for others to find!)

do u have any feel good movies or shows or books to recommend or just ur faves in general bc nothing has ever been the same ever since i watched amélie and that was 3 yrs ago
omg when i read the first two lines of this ask i already had amelie in mind so when u mentioned it in the end i was like ‘!!!’ which same i love that movie sm and i think of it often :’) some of my other personal feel good comfort movies would be chungking express (specifically the second story with faye wong and tony leung !) and whisper of the heart (or anything studio ghibli). those three would be in my like ‘favs forever list’ that literally touched my heart forever. other movies that are feel-good and fun to watch: scott pilgrim vs the world, 10 things i hate about you, tokyo godfather, and kimi no na wa/your name. i've also been watching more anime series recently. the ones that i liked were nana, paradise kiss, kimi ni todoke, and i'm currently watching the disastrous life of saiki k (for funsies bc usually i watch shojo series if u cant tell already LOL) my fav book series that rly struck my heart and nothing has been the same since is the raven cycle. i'm reading never let me go rn and it's going slow for me but i hope my reading pace picks up soon. also i've been watching youtube a lot too and it's not as filling but i find it entertaining when i eat or do laundry LOL

Head in the Clouds Paves Way for Asians and Asian Americans in Music
Danica Nuestro /  August 2, 2021
Tumblr media
Now in 2021: COVID-19 is still on the rise. Developing variants like Delta and Lambda are causing governments to change courses of action regarding recommendations, mandates and lockdowns. However, festivals and event companies have been working endlessly with local governments and public health officials. They’re doing as much as they can to safely bring live music back to us. This includes Head in the Clouds Music & Arts Festival, spearheaded by the pioneering Asian music and media company 88rising, partnering with Goldenvoice. This two-day event is currently scheduled for November 6-7, 2021 at Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. The Head in the Clouds lineup includes Rich Brian, Joji, NIKI, Saweetie, Elephante, Josh Pan and more. This may seem like any other festival for most people, but this festival is incredibly important; not only to me, but for Asians and Asian Americans across the globe.
Asian & Asian American Representation in Media, from a 90’s born Philippine-American perspective
Speaking as a first generation Philippine American born in the 90’s, I grew up in a small town. I was estranged with my culture, and Asian American culture in general. I watched classic Disney Channel, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network shows for example. Additionally I watched iconic sitcoms like Full House, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Friends, and Brady Bunch as well. It was very rare for me to look at the TV and say, “Hey, they kinda look like me!” (Shoutout to Mulan, Kimi from Rugrats, Brenda Song, and Sandra Oh—to name a few—for fulfilling those moments for me growing up). In my childhood, most kids would own NSYNC or Backstreet Boys CD’s. We’d also ask our parents for magazines with Jonas Brothers, Jesse McCartney and Britney Spears posters to hang on our walls. (Side note: Yes, I still have some of them.)
Early Pioneers of Asian and Asian American Representation
While Youtube was fairly new we had Wesley Chan, Ted Fu, and Philip Wang of Wong Fu Productions; Kevin Wu of KevJumba; Ryan Higa and Michelle Phanpaving the way for Asian and Asian American representation in media. When Far East Movement was one of the first Asian American bands on the radio, it was a big deal. I loved finding out that The Black Eyed Peas and the Pussycat Dolls had members who were part Filipino. Back when American Idol was huge, it was wild to see competitors like Jasmine Trias, Ramiele Malubay and Jessica Sanchez; these people looked like me, had a somewhat similar upbringing, and were making a name for themselves on TV. Those were moments where I realized, “I could be like them one day!” That was the Asian and Asian American representation that I grew up with.
Today’s Music, Media and Entertainment Welcoming Diversity
Generations today can now see many actors, athletes, and other talented individuals at the forefront for Asian representation. For example, we have Simu Liu and Iman Vellani as the first Asian superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sunisa Lee just recently became the first Asian American to win gold in the Olympics all-around gymnastics final. Additionally, she is the first Hmong American to ever become an Olympian (let alone a medalist). Yuh-Jung Youn, who portrayed the grandma in Minari, is the first South Korean actress to ever win an Oscar. Additionally, Chloe Zhao is the first Asian woman to win Best Director at an Oscar for Nomadland. We’re seeing way more diversity in the media than before and it is only just the beginning of it all.
The Importance of 88rising’s Head in the Clouds Festival & its Noteworthy Headliners
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CL (@chaelinCL)
In the early 2010’s people ridiculed my significant other for listening to K-Pop. Naming a few, he listened to Girls’ Generation, f(x), 2NE1, Infinite and SHINee. In 2012 came the viral hit known as “Gangnam Style” by PSY. This, in my opinion, became the catalyst of welcoming Korean music in the US. Now, BLACKPINK was the first ever female K-Pop group to perform at a Coachella. Additionally, male group BTS is topping Billboard charts with smash hits like “Dynamite” and “Butter.” Lee Chae-rin is a former member of 2NE1, famously known as CL. She is at the forefront of Korean music as the first female solo South Korean artist to hit Billboard charts. Iconic tracks include “Hello Bitches” and “+5STAR+.” Additionally, she collaborated with Skrillex, Diplo, and Big Bang’s G-Dragon for “Dirty Vibe.” With her success, it’s no surprise seeing her as one of the Head in the Clouds headliners.
Rich Brian (@richbrian/@brianimanuel)
Another headliner listed is Brian Imanuel aka Rich Brian. Brian Imanuel became a viral sensation for his smash hit “Dat $tick” as Rich Chigga. Later, he changed his performance name after realizing he wasn’t in a position to make people less sensitized to “Chigga.” For those unaware, “Chigga” is a word that blends the N-word to the word “Chinese.” Other notable tracks from the Chinese-Indonesian rapper include “Gospel” ft. XXXTentacion and Keith Ape, as well as “See Me”; the latter released at the time he changed his name from Rich Chigga, to Brian and now Rich Brian. His debut album Amen made him the first Asian artist to top the iTunes Hip Hop charts at #1.
Joji (@sushitrash)
Also headlining is George Kusunoki Miller aka Joji. Joji is best known musically for his platinum hit “Slow Dancing in the Dark.” Other notable Joji tracks that gained popularity through TikTok include “Worldstar Money” and “Gimme Love.” I personally am more familiar for his work as Filthy Frank on Youtube. As Filthy Frank, he became a catalyst for internet culture, internet memes and oddly peculiar Youtube comedy skits. Most people may not know, Miller actually started the viral dance sensation for Baauer’s “Harlem Shake,” leading this single to top the Billboard charts that year.
NIKI (@nikizefanya)
Niki Zefanya, also known as NIKI, is an Indonesian singer and songwriter who opened for Taylor Swift during The Red Tour in Jakarta. After moving to the US, she released multiple tracks and EP’s under the 88rising label. For instance, her single “Dancing with the Devil” released ahead of her first EP Zephyr. In addition, one notable album is her genre-bending album Moonchild. Niki’s mission is to “empower young Asian artists under-represented in the American music industry.”
More Noteworthy Head in the Clouds Artists to Look Out For
With an incredible and genre-diverse lineup, there are also are some noteworthy artists performing at Head in the Clouds festival that you may be more familiar with besides the headliners mentioned above. These artists include Saweetie, Elephante, and Josh Pan.
Saweetie (@saweetie)
Some fans may be confused as to why Saweetie is included on the lineup, but she’s actually part Filipino and Chinese through her mom’s side while her dad is African American. Additionally, it’s hard NOT to know the Icy Queen herself with her chart-topping hits like “My Type,” “Back to the Streets” ft. Jhene Aiko, and “Best Friend” ft. Doja Cat. With her worldwide success (including her upcoming collaboration with McDonald’s) Saweetie joins CL, Joji, NIKI and Rich Brian as one of the other headlining performers for this event.
Elephante (@iamtheELEPHANTE)
Tim Wu, or Elephante, who many have seen across big-name lineups like EDC, Ultra Music Festival, EZOO and much more, is also slated to play at Head in the Clouds. Elephante was one of the first Asian American DJ’s that I have seen, and interestingly enough I didn’t even know he was Asian until seeing him live. In an interview back in April with local Bay Area publication Redefining Dichotomies, Wu actually admitted to deflecting about discussing race. “Early on in my career, I was deflective of talking about race, because I didn’t want to just be known as the Asian DJ.” My favorite tracks from Elephante include his cover of “Shooting Stars” by the Bag Raiders, “Troubled” with Deb’s Daughter, and “Age of Innocence” ft. Trouze and Damon Sharpe.
Josh Pan (@joshpan)
Another electronic artist to look out for is Josh Pan. Josh Pan previously performed at the 2019 Head in the Clouds Festival and scheduled to return to this year’s edition. He has released EPs under OWSLA and has worked with the likes of Jai Wolf, Manila Killa, Waka Flocka, Dylan Brady and many more. It’s hard to describe a definitive genre for Josh Pan as he likes to experimentwith music: “It’s always been important for me to flow from one style to the next. The music world is so cross-pollinated now and it’s so easy to experiment, why not try?”
Overall, Head in the Clouds is a festival you won’t want to miss.
With massive headliners and other talented artists performing, Head in the Clouds Music & Arts Festival will continue to make history as a music festival with an Asian-centric lineup. Additionally, it will continue to motivate emerging Asian and Asian American artists worldwide and inspire young Asian and Asian Americans to pursue their dreams in music and media.

Çevresel sanat aktivisti ve "Skull of Satoshi"nin yaratıcısı Kanada asıllı Benjamin Von Wong, sürdürülebilir sanatı teşvik etmek üzere yeşil güç kullanan Bitcoin madenciliği konusunu desteklediğini açıkladı. Wong, Greenpeace ile ortak olarak 23 Mart tarihinde ‘’Skull of Satoshi’’ çizimini yayımladı. Bitcoin madenciliğinin, fazla güç tüketimi nedeniyle dünya üzerindeki olumsuz tesirlerine dikkat çeken bir tartışmanın ortasında sanat yapıtı, "meme" ordusunun dikkatini çekerek reaksiyon aldı. Kanadalı sanatçı, 23 Mart’ta ‘Skull of Satoshi’ çizimini paylaştı. Sanatçı, “Skull of Satoshi”nin, Bitcoin’in daha etraf dostu olma potansiyeline sahip olduğunu öne sürdüğünü söz etti. Yenilenebilir madencilik dayanak görmeye devam ediyor Greenpeace, bunun Bitcoin taraftarlarına çevresel tesiri hakkında görsel bir hatırlatma olduğunu söyledi. Örgüt, Bitcoin’i kodunu değiştirmeye zorlamak ve finansal kurumların iklim taahhütlerini yerine getirmeleri konusunda ısrar etmek için Skull of Satoshi’yi kullanacağını söyledi. Carbon.Credit borsası, yaptığı açıklamada eserin Clean Bitcoin (CBTC) olarak alınıp satılacağını belirtti. Geçen yıl Ethereum, ana ağında The Merge aracılığıyla PoW’dan payın ispatına (PoS) geçiş yaptığını duyurmuştu. Bu makale birinci olarak Paranfil üzerinde yayımlanmıştır.

Is animation still just for kids? Part one: animation as an effective promotional tool in tourism.
Lately, I’ve noticed that there are certain places in the West that are picking up on a promotional technique that’s been around in Japan for quite some time now: using stunningly beautiful animation as a way to attract people to their product. For the first part of this post, I wanted to talk specifically about the use of animation in tourism as a means to attract more visitors.
youtube
In the winter of 2017, Destination Canada hired director Makoto Shinkai and studio CoMix Wave of Your Name fame, the highest-grossing anime and Japanese film of all time, to create a promotional campaign to attract Japanese tourists to the True North. It features Canadian attractions such as Niagara Falls, the Canadian Rockies, Banff Lake, Abraham Lake, as well was major cities Vancouver and Toronto. For 31 gorgeous seconds, you can picture yourself traveling in the midst of Canadian winter looking at the wonderful sights of pure white snow, gleaming icicles and clear skies – instead of trudging through the melting slush and mud and the reality of getting frostbite on your toes.
(I kid, of course. As a Canadian I love my country and while it does go below freezing a lot of the time, the snowy season is a sight that not many other countries get to experience!)
Approximately a month later, the state of Oregon released their own animated promotional video produced by local agency Widen + Kennedy, with animation by Psyop and Sun Creatures Studio and music by Oregon Symphony. While it isn’t in what would be known as Japanese animation or “anime” style exactly, many have compared it to famous Japanese animation studio, Studio Ghlibi for its whimsical take that is “Only Slightly Exaggerated.”
youtube
Even in film, the inclusion of famous landmarks that attract tourists, such as London in Harry Potter, Hobbiton in New Zealand, Times Square in New York City, or Cloud Gate “the Bean” in Chicago, is not uncommon. Yet, many see it as more authentic than when the same technique is used in animation.
It’s the opposite in Japan. In 2016, it was announced that 88 places in Japan were going to be designated as “animation spots” to attract tourists to a “Cool Japan.” Since 2015, fans of the anime Free! have been flocking to Australia’s Russell Hotel that was featured in one of their episodes, with the specific room shown as having bookings up to a year in advance. Most recently, a tourism campaign centred around the international hit Yuri!!! On Ice will begin its third round in the town of Karatsu, which was the inspiration for the main character’s fictional home town of Hasetsu. There will be a museum dedicated to the series opening up for a limited time in the small town, as well as a “Hasetsu Passport” that will be given out with tickets so that you are able to see all the sights that were featured in the anime.

I dug up the numbers for Canada’s tourism for 2017. Unfortunately, it looks like tourism rose up in every region except Japan, which is unfortunate because the promotional video was incredibly breath-taking. Destination Canada’s report stated that this may have been because of the strength of the Japanese Yen compared to the Canadian dollar at the time, so we’ll see if the new year will show us the power of animation yet.

Movies I watched this week #58
I finally saw the critically acclaimed Paddington 2. Having not seeing the first one, I did not expect it to be so well crafted and so adorably-wholesome. A marvelous film! 10/10.
🍿
3 More romances directed by Wong Kar-wai:
🎦🎦🎦 Love and memory hurt in the visually stunning 2046, his kind of a time-travel Sci-fi sequel to ‘In the Mood for Love’ (and ‘Days of Being Wild’ which I haven't seen yet). Tony Leung is trying to recapture his past melancholic romance, and so does Wong Kar-wai here. And they get to sleep with Hong Kong’s most beatific actresses, Maggie Cheung, Gong Li, Faye Wong, Zhang Ziyi and Dong Jie. (Photos Above). 7+/10.
🎦🎦🎦 My blueberry Nights, his first feature in English, is an ordinary light romantic story about letting go of unrequited love. It recycles the usual Broken Heart themes from early Kar-wai movies, and even reuses ‘Yumeji's Theme’ from ‘In the mood for love’ on the soundtrack. With Norah Jones as the main character. 3/10.
🎦🎦🎦 “... If there’s an extra ticket, would you go with me?...”
So I "had to” watch In the Mood for Love again. Shot as if behind bars - in a prison of their doomed love, with the cinema most beautiful lovers. Every time I see stunning Maggie Cheung in her exquisite Qipao dresses (Cheongsam), I just start to cry. And Wong Kar-wai’s cinematic restrain in not showing their spouses even once... 10/10.
🍿
Book Week, an Australian black comedy about an arrogant one-book author who must teach high school literature while working on his second novel. The problem with the film is that it’s very hard to like a bitter asshole like Nick Cutler, because he’s an unpleasant, sarcastic, egoistical narcissist, who hates teaching and has no respect to anybody around him. 2/10
🍿
2 More Steven Soderbergh:
🎦🎦🎦 (Surprised, first watch:) Full Frontal, Soderbergh's low-budget ‘Day for Night’  homage. With David Fincher as the director, and Terence Stamp in a ‘Limey’ cameo. Mostly shot in grainy digital video camera, it’s a flawed Inside Hollywood story which in retrospective should have a critical renaissance. While I can see why this experimental film-within-a-film was panned by professional critics at the time, I can’t understand why it didn’t get a reevaluation after Harvey Weinstein was publicly exposed. Saw it twice.
My Full Frontal appreciation post @ r/truefilm. 8/10.
🎦🎦🎦 Kimi, his latest formulaic Covid-19 neo-tech-thriller about invasions of privacy. A light combination of Hitchcock's ‘Rear Window’, De Palma’s ‘Blow Out’ and every other corporate cover-up mystery ever since. The plot is centered on a young, agoraphobic hacker who works from home on a Siri/Alexa-type device, and who has to fight, alone, the evil corporation that ‘will restore to any means’ to stop her. Obviously, Soderbergh couldn’t get Apple Studios or Amazon Studios to finance it (d'oh!), so he had HBO produces it instead. With Derek DelGaudio as a predictable villain.
🍿
I wanted to watch some movies about Class Wars, but the only one I could find was Harlan County, USA. It’s a terribly depressing story of the 1973 coal miners strike in Eastern Kentucky. Depressing because it showed the horrifying conditions of the exploited workers, living in squalor and poverty in shacks without running water, working in inhuman conditions underground. And because I know that this was one of the last few struggles where the Union somehow “won”. 7 years later, Reagan was elected and the era of the "American Socialism” was over.
Also, it features Florence Reece, the old union organizer who composed Pete Seeger’s ‘Which side are you on’!
Duke Power, which fought the workers tooth and nail, is still a 3 billion plus company today.
🍿
Montgomery Clift X 2:
🎦🎦🎦 John Huston’s The Misfits was the last film for both Clark Gable and for Marilyn Monroe. He died 10 days after the end of the shooting, and she killed herself the next year. Her doomed beauty in the movie was so overwhelming that all the male characters couldn’t help but being transformed as they saw her. But what else was she beside a sad and beautiful object of desire? Like the wild mustangs that they trapped and killed, she was a victim of their libidos and hopeless masculinity. 8/10.
🎦🎦🎦 From Here to Eternity, a soldier melodrama of the weeks before the attack on Pearl Harbor, with Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, and young Jack Warden. Rumors had it that Frank Sinatra got a role in the film by means of his alleged Mafia connections, which was the basis for the Johnny Fontane subplot in The Godfather.
“...Nobody ever lies about being lonely ...”
🍿
Modesty Blaise, Joseph Losey’s 1966 female James Bond “parody" with Monica Vitti, blue-eyed Terence Stamp and flaming Dirk Bogarde. It’s one of the strangest film I’ve seen and I had a hard time following its confusing internal logic. Campy design, pop-art editing and avant-garde mystery confounded me. 2/10
🍿
Marina Abramović: The Artist is Present, a HBO documentary about the Serbian performance artist, and specifically about her major 2010 MOMA retrospective, when in the course of three months she sat silent & motionless for 736 hours in front of 1,545 individuals. A very moving piece about connection, loneliness and our bodies - 9/10.
(This is me at her 2019 exhibition @ Tel Aviv Museum).
🍿
Elia Kazan’s last film, The Last Tycoon, adapted from of F. Scott Fitzgerald's last unfinished novel. Robert De Nero is a Golden Age Hollywood producer, based on “Boy Wonder” Irving Thalberg. It features Tony Curtis, Robert Mitchum, Jeanne Moreau, Donald Pleasence, Ray Milland, Theresa Russell (in her debut role),Seymour Cassel (as the Seal trainer), Anjelica Huston and others. This is the only movie that De Niro and Jack Nicholson appeared in together. 5/10
🍿
First watch: Dazed and confused, Richard Linklater’s still-rocking 'American Graffiti’ high school comedy. The youngest Ben Affleck on film I ever saw. Also a natural Matthew McConaughey. The sound-edit of the opening ‘Sweet emotion’ scene (An orange GTO pulling into the high school parking lot in slow motion) knocked me off my feet - It was a bold announcement: Here is a movie by a new guy with his own voice!
..."alright, alright, alright... 7/10
🍿
A Hero, Asghar Farhadi latest Grand Prix winner. An ambiguous moral tale about a meek man, imprisoned for defaulting on a loan, who is getting deeper into a convoluted deceit. Nuanced realism in an Iranian society that looks bureaucratically unpleasant, conservative and oppressing. 8/10.
🍿
2 Mike Judge comedies:
🎦🎦🎦 “...I'm gonna have to ask you to come in on Saturday...“
Every time I watch Office Space, I am amazed again at how perfect this feel-good, low-key cult satire is, and how well it came to define all garbage office serfs in corporate America. Mike Judge himself played “Stan”, the manager at Chotchkie's. 10/10.
Milton, his original animation that was the basis for the story.
When the real Michael Bolton screen tested for 'Office Space'...
🎦🎦🎦 In Extract Jason Bateman is a successful businessman with a passionless marriage. Disappointingly, it’s a mild, dumb middle class sitcom set-up with few laughs. 3/10
“Are you familiar with Gibson humbucking pickups at all, or... “
🍿
Nadia, Butterfly is a sport drama about a young Olympic swimmer who retires from competition after winning the bronze medal for Canada at the 2020 Tokyo Games. It is based on the director own experiences as a competitive swimmer, and features real non-professional athletes in dramatic roles - unfortunately, not too expressively. 3/10
🍿
2 Silent Era shorts:
🎦🎦🎦 Stuntman Buster Keaton in The Goat from 1921 (Colorized), a lovely mistaken identity two-reeler comedy. (But why was it called ‘The Goat’?)
🎦🎦🎦 A 1903 short, the first filmed version of Alice in Wonderland. Made just 37 years after Lewis Carroll wrote his novel and eight years after the birth of cinema, the adaptation was directed by Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow, and was based on Sir John Tenniel's original illustrations.
🍿
Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines or How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 hours 11 minutes, a very British 1965 production with an ensemble cast that includes Benny Hill, Terry-Thomas, Red Skelton and “all star cast”. A "Comedy” with exactly “0″ laughs. The only memorable thing about the 2:18 minute streaming was the “Intermission” in the middle, which played orchestral music over a dark screen for about 5 minutes. 1/10.
🍿
Craig Ferguson: I'm Here to Help, a 2013 stand up show. I like his humor, even when he screams for 90 minutes. His jokes against Nazis are a bit outdated: He said that Nazis are the only target that you can legitimately make fun of, and nobody will protest it, because no Nazis will come up and admit that they are. Good One, Craig!
