it’s been long enough without me being here so a lot of u don’t know that I actually tattooed Christopher chant’s “chrestomanci” signature on my ribs (in DWJ’s handwriting) a couple of years ago because a decade or so before a friend said “but if u tattooed chrestomanci’s signature on u then you would always be protected since all of you is made of magic, Thais” when my life was really sad. So I keep forgetting this one but yeah I take Christopher with me wherever I go.

Thinking of Christopher and Millie, how Millie never wondered what would happen to her after she got too old to be the Goddess, while Christopher honed in on the question and figured out that she would be made a human sacrifice.

Millie had been pampered and spoiled her whole life; she had no reason to doubt that she would be taken care of. Meanwhile, Christopher had been betrayed by his own family and knew damned well that there are people who will think nothing of murdering children for a bit of power.

And as readers, we know that this is true. Millie came to believe it too. Adults really can be horrible.

But there was one thing Millie knew that Christopher didn't, that the readers don't. She knew Mother Proudfoot.

Christopher wasn't wrong to think that adults do atrocious things. But Millie wasn't wrong either, to believe that this particular adult would always take care of her. Because in the end, she did.

I wish people would talk about Chrestomanci (aka Christopher Chant) from Diana Wynne Jones books. He’s like... a less arrogant version of Howl, with less of the narcissistic tendencies, but still with a flair for drama and suaveness. More than that he makes mistakes AND admits to making them!

He also owns a ridiculously fancy dressing gown for every day of the year. Go figure.

CASUALLY rereading Conrad's Fate and Millie saying that Christopher is too lazy to learn how to do magic properly, "he just bluffs", well MAYBE, Millie, remember that for the first twelve or so years of his life he was unconsciously FORCED to always tell the truth, including to his tutor Fabian about how good he was at magic, until he met THE HUMAN ASPECT OF A GODDESS who told him about it and then TAUGHT HIM HOW TO LIE
