And that's it for 1951!

It's kind of incredible how much the strip has evolved in just this short amount of time. We've gone from a fairly simplistic wold full of generic children to something with a much more nuanced and distinct personality to it (and hey, Shermy is also there! HEYOOOO!). And the cool part is that the strip's evolution has only barely just begun.

As a fun end-of-year thing I figured it would be neat to track how the style of the strip changes over time. I'm not going to follow every character every year (going forward I think I'll spotlight 1 character per year for my own sanity) but I'll try and keep track of the major players at least.

You can really see Schulz's artistic growth when you put the drawings side by side like this. Heads are getting smaller, bodies are getting longer, and much more emphasis is being placed on conveying specific unique emotions. Schulz is adding more detail all around, especially in backgrounds and the rendering of shadows/textures, and is getting very good at adding a few extra lines to make an object feel more authentic.

I also noticed that he's starting to embrace a somewhat looser inking style (look at the sketchy way he draws black items of clothing now for an example of what I'm talking about) and it's really working for him. Eventually I think this will make the art look a bit messy but right now it's a wonderful balance of tightly controlled yet natural and organic. It's a really good style.

Anyways, enough nerding out about art for now. Onward to 1952!
