Can’t go wrong with Muppets, right?

Actually you can. I’ve owned the Jon Denver/The Muppets: A Christmas Together in every format from vinyl to cassette to CD to digital. I listen to it multiple times throughout the holiday season. But I haven’t seen the television special since I watched it on broadcast television in…1979? No, they had to have rebroadcast it years later. Anyway, the album strikes a fairly good Muppet/Denver balance. There’s some Muppet-only songs, some Denver solo work, and some where they sing together. Check it out:

Die Hard being considered part of the canon of "Christmas movies" simply because the events of the film take place near Christmas is a classic, but for my money the funniest example of this particular phenomenon is Beethoven's Last Night, a rock opera concept album about a conversation between Ludwig van Beethoven and the Devil, consistently being filed under Christmas music purely on the strength that the artists who made it also did that one heavy metal arrangement of "Carol of the Bells" you keep hearing everywhere.

Various Artists - A Christmas Gift For You From Philles Records (Philles, 1963) - Designer and photographer unknown

Since the holiday season is around the corner, I figured I would go ahead and start showcasing Christmas-themed album covers. Just 'cause I can.

Record producer Phil Spector brought together his group of artists to record a selection of Christmas songs through his Wall of Sound technique. The result is a Christmas classic still receiving airplay.

In 1972, Apple Records (which Phil, at the time, ran during his short-lived tenure as Beatles manager) put out a new cover for the album featuring Phil dressed as Santa Claus.

This cover, designed by John Kosh and photographed by Clive Arrowsmith, was the basis for all re-releases until 1987, when Rhino's CD release restored the original cover.
