Yellowjackets s2 e3: Bullet Points

Hello! This is about up to Season 2, Episode 3 of Yellowjackets, and ONLY that of Yellowjackets. I have not seen beyond this spot, at all, and know NOTHING about this show. Please do not spoil it for me.  Things that are spoilery in nature, for me, include: saying things like  “Just wait!!” confirming or denying anything I put forward, outside information about the cast interviews or creator statements, leading questions like “Do you think “blank moment” means anything?” etc. Remember  that Y’ALL HAVE SEEN THE SHOW AND I HAVE NOT. The mark on simone something something the long tail of trauma, especially when you never fucking actually deal with it. 

Misty’s storyline is mostly just fun in this episode, and I fucking love it. Love Walter and Misty matching each other’s freak. It’s a great tension breaker that still manages to move the story along, and I think it’s well done. Elijah Wood and Christina Ricci are kiling it, jesus. 

There’s something going on with Nat and Lottie that I can’t put my finger on and the more I tried to write about it the less sense it made so here we are, vibes. The interplay between fighting the spirit/symbol/whatever and leaning into it, something something, I just can’t quite get there. 

I know it’s spectral and also if I were in the same position I would take the shot but honeygirl there is no way in high heaven or low hell that gun is taking down a fucking moose unless you are the luckiest motherfucker on the planet. 

The baby is not surviving, I am calling it now (Though I still say they won’t eat it) I think Misty’s insanely tragic monologue really tipped me off to knowing I’m right. But also intrigued by the cryptic he stuff…antichrist type stuff? Maybe not? I don’t know which is why it’s here instead of anywhere else, but the way Lottie talked about the baby was odd. 

The one true survivor is Natalie’s dye job, it’s such a boggling choice in such a well-written show.

My second Ateez concert liveblog 1 (pregame of day 2)

- When I got home last night the March Korean Elle was waiting for me. It featured a multi page photo spread of San. He looks like three scoops of vanilla ice cream. Absolutely EDIBLE.

- Perhaps not unrelated, I wake up from some sort of dream about San and 삼겹살, which thankfully I do not recall. For my dignity.

- By chance I follow a link to some sort of voice live chat by a K Atiny on X who had the privileged F seats and HATED the show. She was SO MAD. She talked from 1130 or so pm and was still talking when I passed out at 1240 am and when I woke up I saw she had talked until 4 am! More on her in a separate post.

- I still want the goddamn Lightiny so I get to the venue by 11:40. It's bloody hot. By 1220 I'm at the front of the line and THEY ARE SOLD OUT AGAIN. Aughgghh.

-I have a plan today unlike yesterday so I book it to the Yunho birthday cafes. These are really weird and very fun.

- It was hot as hades today and dress code is black so we were all suffering. The Gelato at the shop was actually such a life saver! And the decorations so cute! Like a shrine to Yunho except he's human and alive. A bit like the disciples getting together to hang out after Christ's death, except they didn't think there was a possibility he could show up. Kpop fandom stuff is weird.

- Making friends with Koreans is so hard by the way. I said Hello, it's hot today and the MD line is long, isn't it? to the girl standing in the unsuccessful Lightiny line in front of me, and she reacted with open horror an defensive disdain. Stranger danger apparently. Uhh ok. But I just randomly said Hello, oh am I supposed to set up the photos like that with the Gelato?? to the European woman next to me at the Yunho birthday cafe, bc she was literally making an altar to Yunho on the table in front of us and she was like Yeah!! And from there we made conversation (she's from Spain, went to the Amsterdam and Spain performances, she went yesterday as well and says Koreans don't know how to yell or get wild.).

The two Japanese women next to us were WONDERFULLY dressed in concert outfits that walked the line between Goth and Pretty so I told them in English and mime that they looked beautiful. They didnt speak Korean and I dont speak Japanese and from their reactions I think they'd never had any Korean person be nice or outgoing before. We all nodded and smiled and we all had a convivial time with the gelato. See - It's EASY. Why can't Koreans do this with ourselves?!?!!

The Spanish Atiny showed me her send off line videos where she told Yunho he was her bias and he stopped and looked deeply into her phone camera and said, I love you too. Which. GURRRLLLL

I got so loud that she showed me her Mingi video too, where he asked her what her name was in reaction to her saying he had been wonderful at the performance, and HE said, Christina, I love you, and blew the most dramatic kiss at her camera.

- I met my first Tumblrina irl!!!! Because of Ateez!! I'll let them out themselves if they want. It was super fun! I had a feeling they would need a mask bc our air quality is extra spicy this week and I was right. We found each other by using tumblr chat and the most barebones descriptions hahaha.

- Freebies I got handed while sitting in a more central spot on cement after sending in my mutual for their soundcheck experience.

Seonghwa money is so funny. He saved the nation.

- There was this group of four girls (all in pants and cool baggy outfits) who were doing a complex form of give away where you had to retweet their post and get instructions afterwards for where to find them etc and when one girl showed up to get her goodies on a tight short dress with pretty jewelry they all said, OOH A WOMAN! LOOK IT'S A REAL WOMAN YOU'RE SO HOT! YOU'RE SO SEXY! at the girl, who got very shy and ran away as soon as she got her keyrings.

- I have an hour to go before they will let us in. Considering going to an in-stadium cafe

SNW Liveblog: “The Elysian Kingdom”

This episode? Messy af. Spock in a wig? Sexy af.

The scene with M’Benga and Rukiya is precious, as always—though the subtext of it (her desire to change endings and rewrite stories more to her liking) is a little on-the-nose, considering that the writers of SNW are basically rewriting a classic television show to suit their own whims.

If Rukiya is running out of time, in theory all M’Benga has to do is stop materializing her so frequently…assuming that, while her pattern is in the transporter, she’s not conscious/aware. If she IS, that’s an entirely different (and horrifying) can of worms.

The exchange about superstitions between Pike and Spock is nice.

“Drinks are on me.” This is why Pike’s crew seems so undisciplined, imo. We know that Kirk would, and did, drink with his crew. But he wasn’t casually offering to buy them drinks from the captain’s chair.

“You gonna say the thing?” “Hit it.” Thanks, I still hate it.

I miss TOS’s buttons and tactile controls so much. They’re just more visually appealing (and frankly, more practical) than touch screens.

“Perhaps you did, indeed, jinx it.” I love Spock, lmao. (Also, as someone who calls out sports announcers and coworkers for jinxing things regularly…Pike totally jinxed it.)

People falling out of their chairs during turbulence is a real Trek classic!

Great, M’Benga is what, hallucinating?

These kinds of zany episodes on TOS/TNG took place either on a strange planet—like in “Squire of Gothos” or “Shore Leave”—or on the holodeck. Setting this on the Enterprise instead was…well, a choice.

La’an’s princess costume is delightfully ridiculous and sparkly.

It’s kind of a bummer to see that Christina Chong has real acting chops (even if “Princess Thalia” is intentionally way over-the-top), but is denied the chance to do much acting thanks to how flatly her character is written.

Ethan is hot. No notes.

“Maybe I can get us out of here with the help of some powerful magic called science.”

I vastly prefer hammy/possessed Kirk to hammy/possessed Pike. Sorry ’bout it. (Maybe it’s just the actors, or maybe it’s because regular Kirk comes off as so much more sincere than Pike to me?)

Why is Hemmer, an alien with inherent telepathic abilities, immune to whatever’s happening on the Enterprise, whereas Spock, an alien (well, half-alien) with inherent telepathic abilities, succumbed to it? I can hand-wave most plot holes…this one’s just lazy writing, though.

Worth it? Worth it.

I would watch THIS show.

“Truthfully, I should have known it as well…since that’s what he does in the book.”

“Don’t beat yourself up about it.”

“There’s no such place, my queen, he’s bluffing.”

All those lines were funny and delivered well!

Even though classic tricorders look pretty out-of-place on this redesigned Enterprise, I still love seeing them.

The resolution of the Rukiya subplot reminds me a lot of the end of The Motion Picture.

The moral quandry of it is enormous, way bigger than “storing your daughter’s biological pattern in the transporter to keep her alive,” which raises plenty of ethical questions of its own. M’Benga tells Rukiya that “it’s up to you”—but how can such a young child make such a huge decision: to exist in space as a disembodied consciousness for an infinite amount of time or to wait in stasis for a cure for her human body?! It’s uncomfortably reminiscent of the “willing” sacrifice made by the little boy in Episode 6…not really the comparison you want viewers to be drawing, given how that one ended. Children that age can’t give meaningful consent.

Besides, what does M’Benga know about this entity? How do either of them know that they can trust it? It’s been using the Enterprise as a dollhouse for hours out of boredom/loneliness! What might it do to Rukiya’s energy? And how will becoming said disembodied consciousness impact a nine- or ten-year-old human girl? There are actually a number of great science fiction (horror) stories about this, the premise being that human minds are ill-equipped for that kind of existence. For all M’Benga knows, he could find the cure next week. It was teased in Episode 6. All he needs to do is keep Rukiya safely the transporter—which really shouldn’t be a problem unless she is, in fact, conscious in there. But the writers obviously just wanted to wrap this problematic subplot up and move on.

A grown-up version of Rukiya appears to comfort M’Benga and tell him about her many “adventures,” because it turns out time exists differently for her now even though it’s been ~30 seconds of real time…? It cheapens the scene before and makes me feel belittled as a viewer. I’m okay with feeling uneasy about M’Benga’s choice! I’m not okay with being cajoled into thinking that it was the correct choice. When Kirk let Edith Keeler die, her ghost didn’t reappear to assure him that she understood why he had to! He—and by extension, the audience—just had to live with it.

“She’s safe.” He doesn’t and can’t know that for certain. He let an alien consciousness he neither studied/analyzed nor communicated directly with spirit his daughter away after two minutes of deliberation! Anything could be happening to her out there. Though, to be totally fair, she’s not going to die, so…there’s that?

So yes: this episode is messy. I rewatched it after seeing the ending and reading a lot of reviews/commentary and actually revised this liveblog. It’s not as bad as I initially thought! However, I’ve come to think that the Rukiya subplot itself was a poor choice, one full of troubling implications, dubious decision-making, and questionable ethics. I understand why the writers scrambled to get rid of it. And conveptually, this episode wasn’t even a bad send-off for Rukiya! The execution was just lacking. It could’ve been so much more.

But hey…at least we got La’an’s princess dress, Uhura’s evil queen ensemble, and Spock in that wig.

The Good: Gorgeous costumes—the actress playing Rukiya was a delight; I’ll miss her—Spock in general—some very funny lines/delivery—Christina Chong gets to act!

The Bad: The writing, pacing, set design, and some of the acting was all pretty clumsy—for an episode that turned so heavy, the campy fairy tale stuff was too light and took up too much time. Too much of Ortegas and Pike; not enough of La’an and Spock. (I think there’s too much Ortegas on the show, period. She just doesn’t work for me. No judgment towards other people who may feel differently.) Some truly WTF parenting choices made by M’Benga—huge unresolved questions/plot holes by the end.

But the beauty of SNW returning to Trek’s episodic roots is that it’s a standalone episode. Hoping for better (and more Spockstine!) in the next installment.

Steins;Gate Liveblog

so, I recently started watching Steins;Gate and tried looking for liveblogs to read as I get through it. I however failed to find any, so I thought: why don't I start a liveblog of my own? I'll have to start from ep 10, since that's where I'm at right now, but that's fine I think.

also I should mention that although I'm mostly unspoiled on this one, I did pick up some things. I know that there's an uncomfortable s/a scene for some reason, although for all I know, it might be exclusive to the og VN. I know that apparently two characters have the same VA and it's significant, but I don't know who those characters are or how exactly this is important (although I assume they're actually the same person or something like that).

I also have two running theories thus far. the first one is that Suzuha is from the future. I'm almost completely positive I'm correct on this one. I mean, come on. she doesn't know what corn, fireworks and I think one other thing look like. she's supposedly a soldier and nearly shat herself at the sight of a helicopter. when Okarin said he might be brainwashed, her first reaction was to check in his eyes for a chip. we literally know the future is a dystopia. she even explicitly said something about Christina not doing anything bad in the past? or was it about not meeting her in the past? either way, she mentioned the past, and that's ultra suspect.

the other theory I'm much less certain on, because it's pretty much half conjecture, half random guess. still, it's definitely making me insane. basically, the number that shows up whenever Okarin changes the worldline? I think that's the divergence percentage that Titor mentioned. this is mostly because it has to mean something, and thus far I don't know what else it could be. as for the crazy part? I went back, looked at all the appearances of this number and it's consistently getting smaller. if it really is the divergence number, then Okarin is getting further away from what should be his goal. even if it isn't, it has to be important. I'll be on the lookout for when it reaches 0, starts increasing, or both.

also, not a theory, but I feel bad for Okarin. I can't even imagine what he feels like right now. you did this to yourself, but I'm so sorry.

as for the tag, it'll be "chorsana watches steins;gate", but you can also just look for "steins;gate liveblog" on my blog. the different episodes will also have their own tags, formatted as "steins;gate ep <number>". lastly, the images will most likely have Polish subtitles on them. just ignore it. this is all I think.
