Mortal mage Henley Yu has enough to worry about between the storms caused by broken magic and his strained relationship with his father. He’s trying to keep his head above water, but when he finds a stranger hiding in his kitchen cabinets he’s forced to reconsider his priorities. Chief Operator Kittinger has overseen the flow of magic for centuries, but he’s no fighter. Betrayed by his protectors in their quest to gain control of the magic, he’s running for his life when he makes Henley his accomplice. Kit might lose his new ally if Henley finds out that Kit’s secrets go deeper than the magic itself. Together they’ll venture into the Between, where magic connects worlds, to fight an army of officers ready to finish what they started when Kit fled the scene. For Kit, failure means death. For Henley, it means losing the memory of the only person who gives him purpose. Henley won’t let anyone interfere before he finds out what that means for their future together.
"Death waits for us behind and before; I choose forward."
Christina K. Glover's The Switchboard is a fast-paced urban fantasy that doesn't hold the reader's hand and plunges straight into action, depicting an alternate modern Earth where mages pull their power from a highly bureaucratic dimension without even knowing they're doing it. The two main characters, a mage and an operator, find themselves unexpected allies when a threat to the stability of that dimension promises to wipe out magic forever.
The magic system is the strongest aspect of the novel, an intriguing system based on giving up memories in order to power one's spells. The dimension, with all its differences from modern-day Earth, is described vividly, and the mechanics of the transfer of power are explained with attention to detail. Some aspects fall flat, like the actual lore of the world and the sudden deus ex machina that doesn't feel like it was properly foreshadowed. With the premise and rules as they were explained, and a heart-breaking scene towards the end, the resolution feels like a cop-out.
The characters are painted vividly; the supporting cast shines, and the two main characters at the heart of the novel are intriguing and multi-faceted. Their relationship grows organically despite the break-neck speed of the narration, which spans just a few days from the moment they meet for the first time. The way things end certainly keeps one interested in the sequel.
The Switchboard is a solid first installment of a series.
✨ 3.5 stars

Roadtrip Rewind
Where did we leave off… After Bozeman I took two days driving through Montana, South Dakota, and Minnesota to get to Minneapolis, where I met up with Zoey. We spent two nights there, one night in Madison, two nights in Detroit, one night camping in upstate NY, and one night camping in New Hampshire after a day in Vermont. The next day I dropped Zoey in Portland and drove up to boat school. A few highlights:
In Minneapolis we stayed at 300 Clifton, this old mansion in the Loring Park neighborhood that was recently restored and is now a 10-room hotel/B&B (it’s on AirBnb!). It was spooky and fun and way cheaper than some shit motels I’ve stayed in. It’s probably haunted which is a plus for me. Also there were free scones. Another thing that makes me feel like I’m getting older - I’m starting to like all the dry biscuity foods I’ve always hated (scones, muffins, biscuits, shortbread).
Tumblr media
There must have been a little cyanide in my tea
My claim to fame - we went to a camera store to get our film developed and the person who helped us shouted me out on their Instagram! 🥰 And they happened to know the guy from the camera shop in Portland where we bought our stuff earlier this summer and tagged him too, sweet small world of vintage cameras.

Golf courses are a waste of space
I love Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner so I’ve had romantic ideas about Madison for a long time and thought maybe I would want to go to grad school there. In reality it was kinda weird and sterile which is a bummer because they just announced the UW Madison Transdisciplinary Center for Research in Psychoactive Substances with a focus on therapeutic applications for psilocybin and MDMA #therapygoals
John K. King Used and Rare Books in Detroit is massive and chaotic. Loved it! We were hunting for Caliban and the Witch by Silvia Federici and we met two hella hot and tall employees who were very invested in helping us find the book. One wrote the title down and said he was looking to read more feminist anti-capitalist texts… Like okkkk fucking marry me and read to me in bed until the day that I die!! If I published a hot socialist bookstore employee calendar would anybody buy it?? These two guys would be May and November. I have a copy of Caliban and the Witch sitting in my AbeBooks cart with the shipping address: “Sexy Employee 4th Floor - You Know Who You Are, c/o John K. King Used and Rare Books, 901 W Lafayette Blvd, Detroit, MI 48226.” Venmo me $1 if you care to support my missed connection quest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Laughed out loud…one million books in the store and this is their choice of doorstop
Our hostel in Detroit was in the Corktown neighborhood and next door was the Pink Flamingo pop-up which has been happening there every Thursday for the past ~six years. It’s basically an airstream serving a rotating food and drink menu and a cool hangout spot with music and firepits. We had a fruit plate cuz we’d been eating straight junk for days while the DJ made an impromptu and rambling fireside speech about community and the meaning of life. Near the end the airstream hostess started handing out free rice balls as an apology.
Tumblr media
After Detroit we had two long drive days to get to Vermont where we had maple creamees at Bragg Farm Sugarhouse (shoutout to our friend and former housemate Brett for the recommendation!) and caught one of the last Bread and Puppet shows of the season (if you haven’t heard of Bread and Puppet it’s a political/radical puppet theater company based in Glover, Vermont). Holy shit Vermont is so beautiful it’s like a magical hobbit land. The lady at Bragg Farm tried to recruit me to come back and work through the spring maple sugaring season, maybe I should. Straight maple syrup is the new Red Bull.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that’s it! I can’t believe I drove myself all the way here. Thanks to Zoey for the company and cheers to a summer of buses, bookstores, bikes, and backpacks.
Tumblr media
Before I literally burst into tears
Maine is so beautiful and boat school is keeping me busyyyyy. Does anybody know what the hell a woolen is? I think I’m going to need some here. More soon! Send letters or junk mail my way at 440 Old County Rd, Pemaquid, ME 04558.
XOXO

The Bryan Awards - The Best of the Last Decade (The 2010s)
With only two weeks left in the decade, I took a thorough look back at the last ten Bryan Awards (with the last nine of them being recorded as annual podcasts for WCRS FM), and picked the Best of the Best since the 2010 Bryan Awards (or programs that aired since January 1, 2010, and airing up until the cut-off for this September’s Bryan Awards, which was May 31, which would eliminate the likes of Mrs. Fletcher, Season 2 of Big Little Lies, plus newbies like On Becoming A God in Central Florida, Perfect Harmony, the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and this week’s A Christmas Carol).
Here are the Guidelines Chosen for both this and the Silver Garbage Awards Worst of the Decade: - Eligibility Period is January 1, 2010 to May 31, 2019. - Glee is being entered for New Series of the Decade, because it won the 2010 Bryan Award in that race, despite it debuted in 2009. - Younger Acting will be merged through the genres: Daytime, Comedy, Drama, and Limited Series.  And if an actor turned 26 doesn't really matter, as long as 50% of their nominations were before they were 26. - Big Little Lies (Season 1), Orange Is the New Black, and Downton Abbey are Dramas.  Shameless is a Comedy.  True Detective is a Longform, as is American Horror Story, and ALL seasons will be lumped into one for Anthology Stories. - Sherlock and Sharknado are being entered for ALL of their movies, ditto for Black Mirror episodes, in the Longform races. - There will be separate Lead and Supporting Acting races for Comedy and Drama Bryan Awards, but NOT for Silver Garbage. Apologies for the Length of this Post, but without further ado...

Congrats To The Grammys For Finally Getting Their Rock & Metal Category Figured Out
Tumblr media
Following a pretty up-and-down rollercoaster ride the past few years, the Recording Academy has seemingly gotten their stuff together when it comes to their rock and metal categories.
After dealing with an embarrassing year last year where Avenged Sevenfold publically called out the prestigious institution for their lack of support to the metal community, apparently, someone at the Academy was paying attention as this year’s nominees might be one of their best in quite some time.
For Best Metal Performance, the Grammys see a lot of new faces including Between The Buried And Me, Deafheaven, High On Fire and Trivium as well as scene staples Underoath (Underoath were previously nominated back in 2006 for Best Short Form Music Video).
As for Best Rock Performance, previous nominees like Arctic Monkeys, Cris Cornell (rest in peace) and Halestorm are accompanied by the likes of Greta Van Fleet and, surprisingly and well-deserved, FEVER 333.
Another fantastic nomination comes in the Best Rock Song category. Sandwiched between well-known household names like Ghost, Twenty One Pilots, and St. Vincent is Bring Me The Horizon and, for the second time, Greta Van Fleet.
All in all, as much as we bash on award shows for their lack of support towards our hard rock and metal community, this year the Grammys got it right. Were there other artists that deserved a nomination? Of course there were. But considering how things have been in the past (Leonard Cohen Best Rock Performance 2018, Beyonce Best Rock Performance nominee 2017, Tenacious D Best Metal Performance 2015, etc.), we’ll take it.
To check out the full list of nominees to prepare you for the 61st annual Grammy Awards which will take place on Sunday, February 10th, be sure to look below.

Here Are Your 2018 Primetime Emmys Comedy Nominees
The Primetime Emmy nominees were, as you probably heard, announced yesterday. The Emmys are one of the few awards shows that actually gives comedy a fair shake and, as such, here are a few things worth noting about this year’s nominees.
-Atlanta tallied 16 nominations -Alec Berg got nominated for writing and best series on both Barry and Silicon Valley -Barry got 13 nominations in its first season, five of which went to Bill Hader -Megan Amram’s Emmy campaign web series is, in fact, nominated for an Emmy -delightfully weird craft/sketch show At Home with Amy Sedaris on TruTV got nominated -Laurie Metcalf got nominated for Roseanne, which is the only nomination for the series that has been transformed into The Conners -the live comedy specials that were nominated this year were from Dave Chappelle, Steve Martin & Martin Short, Carol Burnett, and Night of Too Many Stars -Sarah Silverman’s atypical talk show I Love You, America got nominated as a variety sketch series
We could drag on and on about snubs, but that’s just a never ending rabbit hole that we’d rather avoid considering the amount of great TV that’s out there.
