Got to thinking today, about some cartoons I watched when I was a kid, called the Saints and Heroes collection( great stuff), and how it's all, y'know, saints! St. Bernadette! St. Francis Xavier! St. Nicholas! The Fatima story! Yeay! They're great 30 min. episodes for kids to learn a bit about catholicism's greatest saints! And in the heroes sections, they got Columbus: which is fine, they mainly focus on navigation and how he worked hard to achieve that level of education, lots of catholic stuff floating around in that one. They got Ben-Hur; classic jewish/early christian story, though not real, per se. Really good stuff. Great for christian kids.
Then we got the bloody ODYSSEY?!?!? Like, Greek pagan Odysseus running around the seas, killing monsters and suitors and tricking his way across the Mediterranean, all narrated by a Grandpa Owl?!? telling the story to his grandson owlet?!?! Very princess bride style... super weird in this context. None of the other films are narrated by animals. I'm not saying that kids shouldn't know the story of Odysseus, I'm just saying you can get serious whiplash watching chill saint movies for kids and then coming across The Odyssey, with no catholic connections, ( at least that's easily grasped by a child), getting thrown in the middle of the list and once you're done, brother you feel like you been in a fever dream. It's so bizarrely disconcertingly different in style to the rest of the films, too.
But at least they keep the fact that Odysseus 'slept around'( for lack of a better term), during those years at sea completely absent from the story. So it does have that in it's favour.
Still lots of fun to watch!

“And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope: and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”

It's that time of year when Tumblr celebrates Easter by posting pictures of crucified anime characters, and inevitably somebody in the notes will pop up to helpfully explain that crucifixion imagery has no cultural significance in Japanese media because Japan is only about 1% Christian, which bugs me because it's completely wrong.
It's true that in the majority of cases, crucifixion in Japanese cartoons isn't meant to be conveying any specific theological message, but something Western audiences are likely to miss is that a large portion of those random crucifixion scenes are referencing Ultraman.
Ultraman's creator was a devout Roman Catholic who explicitly intended the titular hero to read as a Christ figure, and consequently, various Ultramen have been crucified on multiple unconnected occasions throughout the franchise's history. Crucifixion scenes in Japanese cartoons are often directly name-checking particular crucifixion incidents from Ultraman, right down to emulating the compositions and camera angles of specific shots. It's like an especially morbid version of the Akira slide.
The upshot is that, while it's true that the inclusion of gratuitous crucifixion scenes in Japanese cartoons typically has no (intentional) theological message, stating that they have no cultural significance is incorrect. A large chunk of the Japanese viewing audience are going to see them and immediately go "hey, that's an Ultraman reference".
Anyway, as an image tax, have a shot of four crucified Ultramen miraculously resurrecting a fifth Ultraman by shooting laser beams out of their hearts:

Seeing a discussion about old Christian cartoons on my dash reminded me of the ones I loved watching in Sunday school as a kid that I haven't been able to find since them. I have no idea who made them or what they were called, but (being weird) my favorite one was from the book of Daniel, specifically about the prophesy about the statue made up of different materials that represented seven different kingdoms that was destroyed by a rock coming out of a mountain. Everytime I read that passage I can see the cartoon in my head, and it really bothers me that I can't find it because it was SO influential in my walk with Christ

The Feast of St. Teresa of Ávila is on October 15th!
___
JOKE-OGRAPHY: St. Teresa of Ávila (or Sister Teresa of Jesus, as she was known) was a Carmelite nun, a mystic, a reformer, and a musician! She'd play drums and tambourines to keep time for her sisters as they played other instruments or danced in their recreational time. In this cartoon, St. Teresa receives a new drum kit, but it's too big for her to play alone. Drum kits aren't normally meant for two people, but as the other nun points out, this a "co-nun-drum." A conundrum is a dilemma (like having a drum made for two people when you only have one drummer). A co-nun-drum is a drum made for two nuns to co-play (play cooperatively).

💐 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 (マザーズデー)
'Twas a day late sharing this, so here is a Mother's Day-themed fanart of the Heelers. Making more Bluey fan-art, now and continually in the style of retro anime for a good sense of nostalgia!
Catching up on episodes, Bluey is such an extraordinary series 😭😭😭. I plan on doing more fan-art of this show, and other cartoons as well. Enjoy :)
And we love you mothers everywhere!

Re-design of my un-named Beetlejuice OC from back when I was thirteen
Tumblr media
Original Reference under the cut:
Tumblr media
#my art#beetlejuice#toonjuice#beetlejuice cartoon#beetlejuice fanart#beetlejuice movie#procreate#I don’t really make OC’s for fanwork anymore… but the ones I had when I was younger almost never got named 🥲#When I first made her I really really liked her- and her story was very self indulgent#Looking at it now is almost way too weird for me… (and honestly a little unintentionally homophobic???)#Basically she was one of the girls from Dante’s inferno… except she got kicked out because she only had attraction to girls#(This was BEFORE I suspected that I was a lesbian— mind you.)#Yeah but anyway she went to the Deetz/Maitland house looking for a place to stay but drove everybody crazy#She was super flamboyant- loved everything pink n fluffy- and was well meaning but did more harm than good trying to do nice things for the#She had this one sided crush on Delia??? Like musical Beej and Adam except less perverted and more flirty/sappy? I was an odd kid- okay? 🥲#Anyway… the old design didn’t really do much to show off her personality… so I ended up upheaving the whole thing#It was okay for what I knew at the time- but I know what I was trying to say then and now I have the knowledge to say it better#Also— the reason I gave her horns here is so silly.#When I was younger I was in a Christian school where I wasn’t allowed to draw witches-ghosts-demons-etc.#So even though I based her on the Dante girls… I refused to give her horns because I thought that was ‘too sinful’#I even remember having so much guilt while looking for references of the Dante workers#I couldn’t even look for more than five seconds!#Anyways… she really pushed the boundaries for me at the time and it’s fun to see how I’ve changed and grown since then.

It fucks me up so much when I see the same dusty ass bullshit being rebranded like this. This person is using cutesy tumblr-lingo to try and paint themselves as fun and relatable.
Super cool Christianity, totally hip and down the the kids, totally not terrible at al-

Honestly, this whole "Luce & Friends" thing could be a positive development. Superbook hasn't aired for thirty years, and we're about due for another generation of kids whose understanding of Christian theology comes principally from officially licensed anime.

When it comes to playing animated villains, Christian Slater is pretty underrated.
(He literally just plays a dick version of himself in Archer and I find that stupidly funny for some reason)
