Welcome to Samdal-ri final thoughts
Photography is a niche creative industry, and like creative industries everywhere, there's going to be abuse of power. And no one does anything about it, because the abuser is good at generating income. In Welcome to Samdal-ri, Cho Sam-dal is hounded by the media based on "false" accusations of workplace bullying by her assistant - a nasty, reactionary premise. And the idea that Sam-dal, a popular, established photographer, wouldn't have the resources or the will to crush that assistant - whether she was lying or not, especially if she was lying - is delusional. But the show wants you to *feel sorry* for Sam-dal, this sweet soul set adrift in the harsh tides of vapid metropolitan Seoul, and it does so in the most tone-deaf, infantilizing way possible. Episode 1 was dumb as shit, but I stuck in until Episode 3 because Shin Hye-sun & Ji Chang-wook have lethal star power. When I picked the show up again, it was because I saw that one clip of Sam-dal and Yong-pil hugging & kissing in bed, and thought, oh! Chemistry! Maybe it gets better!
It doesn't. My opinion has pretty much stayed the same. Welcome to Samdal-ri wants to be funny, charming and heartwarming, but only manages to be embarassingly insincere. The direction can't figure out how to choreograph the big comedic setpieces it wants us to laugh at, and the script is so incoherent that it borders on amateurish. Then Shin Hye-sun and Ji Chang-wook step in, and they're funny and charming and warm. These are two well-matched performers with similar points of appeal. The script writes Yong-pil and Sam-dal less like her love interest and more like her life coach, but SHS and JCW play the pair as 2 halves of the same organism. I rooted for their friendship even before their romance. Shin Hye-sun makes some stunning work of this material, and JCW was born to stare lovingly and tenderly. At some point, the story is simply too lost for them to carry it, but still, the effort was kind of amazing to watch.
I also really loved Shin Dong-mi and Yang Kyung-won as Jin-dal and Dae-yeong. If SHS and JCW are selling mediocre material, the material here is actually good and SDM & YKW play it so well. Like this show is genuinely funny whenever Dae-yeong opens his goofy mouth to opine after his ex-wife - the scene where he hallucinates her scaring off his brothers is a hilarious and perfect summary of his psyche. I expected them to remain on that level, until the story flips very effectively into Jin-dal's perspective and drops an interesting insight into their relationship. Dae-yeong loves his wife very much, but he's still a bumbling, thoughtless man from a wealthy family. A throwaway comment he makes about his in-laws' "disgusting" stew becomes a point of humiliation for Jin-dal, who takes emotional cruelty from his mother for daring to bring something polluting into her son's palette. He might be the black sheep, but he's still a child of this family. This is the bravest and most interesting thing Samdal-ri does, to implicate the lovable Dae-yeong as a very real part of Jin-dal's unhappiness as his wife. Naturally, the show, having walked right up to that point, retreats straight away, back into drunk conversations and increasingly unfunny hijinks. The very obvious conclusion to me was that Dae-yeong would give up his money and learn to live as a full, present adult, for the woman he loves. But instead, he returns back to his wealthy family (though he's lost enough of their money to be legally disowned), becomes the boss of the airline branch (though the entire show has been about how he should NOT be handling business), and his wife works for that airline (owned by the abusive family she hates). And there's a Saudi Prince thrown in there, somehow. Nothing's changed, not for Dae-yeong, not for Jin-dal. It's as if to say, yeah a man like Dae-yeong is only good for his money, and that's the only way he and a woman like Jin-dal can coexist. It's...realistic, I guess, but I don't think Samdal-ri realises how awful that ending is. Prime case of wanting to have your cake and eat it.
But also this: life is either ritzy like Seoul, like being a famous photographer or the wife of an airline CEO; or it's small and pithy like a near-empty village on an island. There's no middle ground, which is why Dae-yeong can't simply quit being a CEO and get a normal job. To depict the fall and rise of its characters, it fixes Samdal-ri and Seoul at ends of a binary, but even to that, it doesn't commit. Seoul is just this shiny place overrun by journalists. Samdal-ri is a town of working-class haenyos, but no one ever brings up money because they're too busy talking about how much Yong-pil likes Sam-dal. Sam-dal realises how much tourism has changed Jeju, but that doesn't complicate how she perceives the island or the home she's been away from for more than a decade. Yong-pil in Jeju, Sam-dal in Seoul, but neither place has any real presence, are little more than vague metaphors of an ill-defined rural/urban divide. How can their love take root without earth? Lol, yeah, maybe I am asking too much of another frothy Netflix crowd-pleaser, but it also want me to take it seriously so 🤷♀️ Here we are.
Anyways, to wrap this up, if you want a show about grown people going back to their parents with their tails between their legs, then just watch Once Again. It wears its heart on its sleeve, and manages to be funny and spontaneous without feeling like it's trying to squeeze sentiment out of you. And I started Summer Strike, mostly for comparison, and it's a show that at least knows what it wants to be.

Parasite & Globalization
Cassandra Villela
English 495
Professor Wexler
12 December 2022
Globalization: Korean Films in Westernized Society
Korean cinema has experienced growth in Hollywood’s growing global control. Hollywood films have influenced Korean films. Movies such as Bong Joon-Ho’s “Parasite” can be seen as hybridized movies with Korean and Westernized aesthetics and issues. Mass media and modern technology play a crucial role in enhancing Globalization as it helps increase foreign films. Globalization is the term used to describe the relationship between the world’s economies, cultures, and populations; It is the process of change and interdependence between countries brought on by trade and communication. In the film Parasite, by Bong Joon-Ho, the Kim family uses the ideologies of Western Education and modern technology to scheme their way into employment by the wealthy Park family.
Parasite shows the contrasts in the social gap: being underprivileged or exceedingly rich. Although the film takes place in Korea, poverty is understood globally. The film emphasizes the lives and struggles of people in the nation but incorporates elements of horror and drama, which might be why America has opened its arms to the film. According to Jin Dal Yong, Hollywood makes films for entertainment, including action, horror, and comedy themes (81). Korean movies have also incorporated Hollywood’s film formulas. The divide between classes and dreams of climbing a social and financial ladder is prevalent in American culture. Parasite presents these identical issues but also adds elements of shock value. The Kim family first gains an opportunity to work for the Park family through their son Kevin because of his best friend Min’s advocacy in becoming an English tutor for the family’s teenage daughter. Ki-Jung, also known as Jessica, also becomes employed by the family because she pretends to have studied art in Chicago, Illinois. Cultural Globalization is showcased when Cho Yeo-Jeong buys headdresses and a tipi tent from America because of her son’s current obsession with Native Americans.
Another way the film introduces Globalization is through technology. Within the first few minutes of the film, we are placed into the semi-basement of the Kim clan while they are scavenging for a WIFI signal. The mother deems it necessary to have a working connection to communicate with a pizza place through WhatsApp for their job. Modern technology has created quick movements for money, materials, and other economic assets. Jessica tells her family she got the Park mother to believe her credentials because she Googled art, and the term “art therapy” came up, so she used that. Kevin and Jessica also used Photoshop to create fake documentation of collegiate studies. The internet has increased the sharing and flow of information and allows people to exchange culture and knowledge.
The movie satirically exemplifies how in Korean society, it is idealistic to study or purchase outside goods in the US to obtain a better societal position and reputation in Korea. English is seen as a powerful tool and good credentials for aspirational status. I enjoyed the film because I connected the Kim’s financial position to those who live on Downtown Los Angeles—Skid Row streets. Parasite displays the constant hunt for a job, or money, to stay afloat; its insightful division of class shows how Capitalism works on a global spectrum— the work of the lower class feeds profit to the upper class, and their earnings feed the low-class consumers.

Okay, but I need a fic where Cha Young is sick and Vincenzo is taking care of her à la The Hating Game.
Give me a Vincenzo who is fretting as every minute passes because Cha Young hasn’t come in for work nor is she answering her phone, and Mr. Nam who is also low-key anxious, because even though Cha Young is not always the most punctual person, the only time the two lawyers come in late is if they’ve stopped by a cafe to get coffees for the three of them, and Cassano Byeonhosanim is already here in the Jipuragi office so where is Hong Byeonhosanim?
Give me a Cha Young who was so sick the night before, she forgot to charge her phone at night, and her now dead phone has some 20 missed calls from Vincenzo and Mr. Nam each.
Give me a worried Vincenzo who drives as fast as he can to Cha Young’s house; who walks in (of course he knows the code and has his own set of spare keys to her house) and is surprised to see the kitchen a mess (because Cha Young isn’t fastidious, but she does hate a messy kitchen); and who heaves a huge sigh of relief to see her bundled under her blankets when he walks into her room.
Although that relief doesn’t last long when he realises just how sick she is. Give me Vincenzo placing a cool, damp washcloth on her forehead, forcing her to take meds and holding her hair when she throws up. Give me Vincenzo gently stroking her hair, and a very feverish Cha Young softly calling out “Eomma.. Abeoji.. Cenzo..” in her sleep.
Give me Mr. Nam dropping by with an overnight bag for Vincenzo (because there’s no way he’s going to leave Cha Young’s when she’s so sick).
Give me Ms. Kwak preparing and bringing over some juk and other comfort food, because Cha Young needs to eat home cooked food, and her juk always does the trick when Yeong Ho is sick. Also, she’s not sure if Mr. Cassano can cook. And she’s pretty sure he hasn’t given a thought to his meals either.
Give me Cheol Wook, Yeon Jin and Dal Rae dropping by with some fruits. The fruits are just an excuse -- Yeon Jin looks after Cha Young while Cheol Wook and Dal Rae make sure Vincenzo finally takes a few minutes to eat something. Also, little Dal Rae is the only one who succeeds in making her godfather smile (albeit a small one) that day.
Give me Han Seo, Mr. Cho, Mr. Tak, Director Ahn and Seok Do, all calling up Vincenzo in turns and offering to drive them both to the E.R. should the need arise. Han Seo offers to get his noona the best doctors from the best hospital in Seoul and even pay for the entire VIP floor of the hospital if needed.
Give me Mi Ri and Monk Chae Shin dropping by with tea and vitamins for Cha Young and offering to do small chores around the house like tidying up the kitchen. Give me Cha Young finally feeling a little better and telling Vincenzo he doesn’t need to stay, he can go home and rest now, she’ll be alright and him looking at her with the most intense look in his eyes and the softest, most resolute No, and that’s the end of that. Give me Cha Young hobbling to the bathroom to freshen up, and stopping in her tracks when she sees the now tidied up kitchen and living room, and all the food on her dining table, courtesy the Geumga family. Give me Cha Young leaning into Vincenzo for support, who is half hugging her and reassuringly rubbing her shoulder, and her tearing up slightly, because after her Abeoji’s death she thought she would never have a family again, but times like these make her so thankful for their crazy family. Give me Vincenzo changing the sheets on her bed and opening the windows in her room to let some fresh air in, while she’s in the bathroom freshening up.
Give me Yeong Ho dropping by in the evening because of an errand Mr. Cassano asked of him as a special favour: he’s brought them bungeoppang! Give me Cha Young and Vincenzo relaxing in the living room, because Cha Young is feeling much better now and she needs a change from her bedroom. They’re both on the couch watching the latest melo drama, with Cha Young’s feet in Vincenzo’s lap, and him cutting an apple into slices for her.
And imagine the amused expressions on both their faces when their Geumga Cassano family group chat blows up because everyone is texting to check in and see how the two of them are doing. And then Vincenzo does something very unlike him: he sends them a selfie of the two of them. And then the group chat really blows up, and Cha Young can’t stop laughing. But also, aish, did you have to take a pic when I’m looking like that, huh? And imagine Soo Nam texting “just get married already, why don’t you” and immediately deleting his text. But of course everyone’s seen it. Vincenzo and Cha Young don’t mention it to each other though. Although Vincenzo is already cursing Soo Nam in his head, because he already has a plan.
Give me Cha Young falling asleep as she lays huddled to Vincenzo’s side, and him arranging a throw around her, stroking her hair and kissing the top of her head softly, and then leaning back and closing his eyes and settling for a nap himself. Give me Cha Young waking up a few mins later, and seeing this sweet, tired man finally resting, and she smiles to herself and kisses his cheek and then snuggles again into him and closes her eyes. She’s finally feeling better.
Give me Cha Young and Vincenzo having dinner a couple hours later, with him low-key fussing over her because she needs to eat more to keep her strengths up. Give me Vincenzo handing Cha Young her meds, tucking her into bed once she’s taken them while she reiterates yet again that she’s fine, and him kissing her forehead and telling her to sleep well and then settling into the bedding that he’s laid on the floor by her bedside. Give me both of them having a staring match from their respective beds, until Vincenzo dozes off first, and Cha Young reaches out and touches his hair, now down and curling across his forehead, and mutters a soft gomawoyo, before giving in to sleep herself.
