thinking about episode 26 again... it's unfortunate that chip killing that goblin to protect ollie never got to play out with significance in later episodes, because it's so interesting! even in the rolleds, condi and bizly mention wanting to bring it up later, because it's something that chip desperately didn't want to do, for fear of losing the good that arlin instilled in him. for fear of becoming the bad that his brother bruised on him.

because it's so ironic that jay says "eventually you're going to have to kill something", but the impetus of chip's departure from skullslice and from reuben was that first and only kill he was driven into.

and when a goblin gets ollie with a natural 20, he freaks the fuck out! of course he does!! he cares so so much for ollie, the younger kid he's protecting, and he responds the way his own once-brother, who, a long, long, long time ago, took on the dirty fighting of the streets for chip: with brutal, fierce violence. to snap bloody knuckles across the jaw of the world.

in fact, he steals this goblin's life the way he stole his first under reuben's orders. he stakes his swords right through his chest.

but he doesn't have time to dwell on this, on the blood on his hands, because there's ollie lying limp and lifeless on the floor. and chip's trying to shake him into awareness but he doesn't have any magical ability to heal, like gillion and jay do. he has to wait for jay to come around to get ollie up.

and then. the compass. because of his self-serving actions, ollie literally grows up too fast, and chip hurts this kid that he cares so deeply about. i have so so much more to say about this part of his arc in particular, especially to do with lizzie and chip, but! the point is that when he hurts ollie, albeit unintentionally, he can't help but see reuben in himself. he never calls ollie his younger brother, because reuben called him his little brother, and he's so scared of being like him. of hurting people like him.

that "inability to heal" (aka inability to help ollie) comes back around in episode 42, when gillion and chip are spending time in the infirmary. as chip jokes about how he doesn't have any divine magic of his own that can help people, aka heal them, gillion responds: "maybe it's your destiny to help people! ...i hope it is." and that "different kinds of people need different kinds of healing."

at this point, chip fundamentally does not see himself as 'someone who helps others', symbolized by his literal inability to access healing magic. in this scene in particular, he's been down for a while because of what happened to ollie, and because he feels as though he's in fault and has no way to fix it.

but gillion calls this out, telling him that there are different ways to help people, and then directly after this! chip incites the crew into helping the people of edison kingdom in his own way, stealing from the rich to give back to kids who remind him of himself.

so all of this to say. i think chip jrwi is cool

i will never understand people who don't like jay ferin because she's truly the best character in riptide. i don't say that lightly, either. (chip's exactly the sort of character i always love, and bizly plays him so well, with so many nuances. gillion's that perfect mixture of comedy and tragedy that charlie always manages. so many of grizzly's npcs are so well-rounded and developed you'd think *they* were the main characters - mainly talking about people like lizzie, caspian, ollie, the ferins, etc.) but jay ferin is a wonder to behold

for the first half of the campaign - literally the first half - she's hiding who she really is. she's still brilliantly funny and interesting, but she seems not quite fleshed out - but that's because condi's doing an absolutely incredible job at playing a character who's not being herself. and then once she comes into herself and feels more confident, oh my goodness condi's so great at showing her self-doubt but also her silliness. she's such a good female character (and others in riptide don't achieve this so easily, so again i'm not saying it lightly) and it's down to how well condi writes and plays her story

as much as chip is my favourite due to personal preferences when it comes to tropes and archetypes for my blorbos, i really mean it when i say jay ferin is the *best* character in riptide. i could talk about her forever, and i do often, but i really wanted to talk about this cause it baffles me when people say she's underdeveloped or boring. she's the best one, you sillies, you just might've missed when the extent of her brilliance was revealed (aka episode 53)

I’ve been able to finished half of the JRWI campaigns and finally started listening to Riptide, I dragged my feet for no reason honestly but every campaign has been fun to listen to, BITB and Apotheosis are my top two, BITB being my intro to JRWI and Apotheosis having Angelstone, I’m a simple person I cannot lie

Finally decided to watch the Tales from the Black Rose oneshot only (checks notes) seventy episodes into Riptide and here are my thoughts collected as I go

I don’t know what I expected Finn Tidestrider’s voice to sound like, but it wasn’t this. And yet it’s perfect. It feels like there’s just a hint of Gillion’s voice in there while still being unique and I love that

It’s also just generally really interesting to hear the differences between Bizly and Condi’s original voices for Arlin and Drey and how Grizzly plays them in the main campaign. It’s a unique experience compared to Prime Defenders where Charlie, Grizzly and Condi continued to voice Ms G, Harlem and Jason (except that one time Bizly played Ms G)

Grizzly playing young Chip with a voice that is almost identical to the one he uses for Ollie….. gonna go cry for a bit brb

And the parallel of Arlin and Chip doing the hot sauce in a drink prank on Finn, and Chip and Ollie later doing a similar prank on Gillion, I’m unwell-

Bizly’s reaction to the ending is so real. Man, it must’ve been so cool to see this when it first came out and not know anything about how Riptide would go. Like, I know where Drey ends up, but to experience that oneshot completely clueless? The tension going into the main campaign would be crazy

hello grizz! have you and the crew discussed any secondary characters on the off chance of any deaths? do you think that you'd be more inclined to go for characters already close to other characters (like a family member or friend, like if chip died, bizly would play Ollie or something), or something completely new?

None of us have talked about secondary characters. I think if it happened, with no way back, we'd figure it out after the episode, once proper care and attention was given to both the player and the character. The players are most responsible for their character's well being, and they trust me with dungeon master decisions based on what they do.

I'm not planning for any player characters to die, and I do genuinely try my best to keep them alive, while keeping the stakes high. It's a fine balance getting them feel the weight of death and it's possibility, without them losing their characters outright.

Death can be impactful for a narrative, and in D&D it's very common. Combat is deadly and it won't always be descriptions of cool action. Sometimes it is desperate and ugly. That being said, when it comes to consequence, there are fates far worse and possibly more compelling than dying. I've written a lot for these characters, and to lose them would mean losing so much potential. That is the tragedy of death. Regardless, after the black sea arc, I think I will pull less punches, or at least have gotten much better at the balance I've described.

Currently, The Riptide Pirates have put themselves in a very dangerous situation, with very little leverage. Episodes 108 & 109 have already been recorded, and I hope all I've described are evident in how I run these upcoming episodes. PLEASE ENJOY!
