Blossoming In Scranton

Every one of us in this class, from the oldest to the youngest, can say they were around when The Office aired. It debuted on 24th March 2005, and ran through 16th May 2013. It featured Michael Scott, the arrogant yet aloof Regional Manager of Dunder Mifflin, and his often inappropriate humor.

His underlings, including Jim Halpert, Pan Beesly, Dwight Schrute, and others, were his victims. And it all went down in Scranton PA. The show is hugely popular in reruns today, its mockumentary style resonating with viewers and spawning numerous other shows and movies written similarly. On several occasions, Chili’s was an unwitting benefactor of some nice free advertising as it wound up being scripted.

And now Chili’s is trying to cash in on those references. Although there never was a Chili’s in Scranton all these years, the chain—owned by Brinker International—will open a new restaurant there on 7th April, marking the 20th anniversary of the show. Best part: the interior decor is based on The Office, along with throwback design pieces used 20 years ago in their restaurants.

Would you like an Awesome Blossom onion with those baby back ribs? It will all look good on those tiled table tops making a comeback.

At a time when many restaurant chains are shuttering stores across the country, Chili’s is rocking it, having staged a complete reversal of fortune. Chili’s reported a 31.4% increase in same-store revenues in the last quarter of 2024. I am pretty sure the folks at Denny’s, IHOP, Applebees, and others are green with envy.

The surge in revenues has allowed Brinker to invest in back-of-house equipment to improve and speed-up operations, as well as have a little fun in Scranton.

This is not the first time that real cities have become become popular thanks to pop culture. Many years ago, The Andy Griffith Show popularized a fictional town called Mayberry, which many people assumed was based on Mount Airy North Carolina. More recently, Albuquerque basked in the glow of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, truthfully an uncredited “character” in both series. Twin Peaks brought fame to Snoqualmie Washington. Stranger Things put Jackson Georgia on the map, although in the show it was known as Hawkins Indiana. Glee brought notoriety to Lima Ohio. I could go on.

I have to wonder, had Chili’s not experienced such a turnaround, would Brinker even be coming to Scranton, much less purposely tying in to the show? That’s a luxury you can afford when times are good.

On the other hand, I can see this Chili’s being a huge tourism draw. I know I would be seeking it out, kind of like how on our honeymoon we sought out Mystic Pizza while traveling through Mystic Connecticut. Never mind that all the interior shots in the movie were filmed on a soundstage elsewhere.

And as for that quote in my intro, that’s one among many one-liners from Michael Scott. I’m betting that Brinker is well aware of it, and plans to do a lot of its own business right there in Scranton.
