The Children of Triad series (Delan the Mislaid, The Moonbane Mage, Ara's Field) by Laurie J. Marks!

It's a trans allegory, a fish out of water allegory, it has found family, raised by the wrong species, and love doesn't solve all problems, love is it's own very complicated problem. It has cool aliens on a crystal world with magic and several competing intelligent species (also everyone is vegetarian and everyone but the mers lay eggs).

The first book is also an Ugly Duckling story, where the furry grey alien that was thought to be an ugly deformed mutant by the ones who raised them, grows cloud-white wings and discovers they were born to fly!

The second book follows Delan's bratty bratty offspring as they run away from home and fall in very ill-advised love.

The third book actually branches out to multiple POV and the attempts of the most dominant species to achieve peace in the face of the return of an ancient danger that threatens the whole world.

It has characters in loving poly relationships, a species that frequently has poly relationships and are also a fully hermaphroditic species where everyone is capable of getting pregnant and getting another pregnant.

And the author is a lesbian.

Just now realized that Owen marries Juana’s (grand)daughter Sofia, which means one of Thomas’s biological children is married into Mary/KoA’s family. I think by the time Owen is old enough to be married, Mary doesn’t care anymore, but depending on where KoA is at, she might be angry enough to do something. *Say this wasn’t the case I feel like…she still might not believe Juana’s line via her second husband is legitimate and therefore they cancel each other out re bastard status + owen being so far down the line of succession but also she might well feel the need to say something (Juana does not give a single solidarity fuck which may not help their relationship)

i don't have a whole lot of new snippets to post of the original fiction project but you can look thru my tag for it to see some notes and scenes drafted over the past ~3 years. granted, the project has evolved a lot since i started writing it, so plenty of stuff is no longer canon-accurate!

that said, it's been a while since i talked about these characters and the story they're in, so!

like most of my owl fics (and fics for other fandoms), it's a story that's largely about grief and chronic illness; it's also a story about power and what people do with it

without getting too heavily into plot spoilers, the main cast are:

sol (she/her): full name "winter solstice," certified loner bitch with very clear Issues. she has a stranglehold on the sex work industry in her fictional city in this fictional world & very little interest in ceding that power. she's originally from a place that has been blighted by famine & has a bunch of trauma from all kinds of sources, nowadays she only trusts two people in the entire world fully -- devin and ruby. also, she hates nova's guts and wants nova dead in the most grisly way possible.

ruby (she/her): full name "ruby sunrise," hails from the same place and cultural background as sol, shares her native language and her traditions. ruby cares more than sol about preserving both sides of her heritage & culture (she's biracial), and she's very invested in kindness and decency. what she wants more than anything is to leave a positive mark on the world, but she's lonely and lacks a lot of the support she needs. she loves both sol and devin fiercely.

devin (he/they/she): in pain pretty much constantly because of a chronic illness that's Supposed to be a "blessing"; they're a powerful magician who functions as the reincarnation of a god. this position comes with a lot of responsibilities and varying miseries. devin has made a lot of questionable choices in her quest for autonomy and for making the world better; nowadays she spends a lot of time helping sol do grisly crimes and trying to protect underprivileged people. all while knowing that their magic is a terminal autoimmune disease.

nova (she/her): like devin, she functions as the reincarnation/personification of a god. because of this, she and devin are fated soulmates, which she is determined to honor even though devin hates her and does not want to be her soulmate and has made no secret of that. she comes from a privileged background with an idyllic childhood, tons of adult support, and very little strife. she believes that the best thing that she can do is serve her purpose of preserving the status quo, and she's Extremely Vexed when people make this harder for her. also believes she can outrun the autoimmune part of her magic with yoga and jogging.

all four of them function in my usual sweet spot of "people who all kind of suck and are making kind of terrible terrible decisions, but who are also doing the best they can with what they have." and. i love them

While responding to the last post, I came up with a couple of fun facts that I have a desperate urge to share, so here we are :)

Curse of the Vagabond (CoTV) and Children of Solthea (CoS) used to be the same story... but when I aged up the CoTV characters to make them late 30s-early 40s (ish), I realised that it didn't make much sense for a 17 year old girl to be the one helping them find their identities.

Blaze, Zale, and Brylee (from CoTV) used to be siblings. Now, Brylee is just a close friend of Blaze's. (Camilla and Mikaela also used to be their cousins.

Triad of Amaranthine, Tales of the Two-Headed Phoenix, Curse of the Vagabond, and Children of Solthea are all technically one series and are interconnected. Triad of Amaranthine takes place a couple hundred years before the reign of Aevitas, Tales of the Two-Headed Phoenix takes place while she is just starting to take over, and Curse of the Vagabond takes place five-ish years before Children of Solthea does.

Tales of the Two-Headed Phoenix and Curse of the Vagabond share parallels: The main character of both series specializes in fire magic; both stories take place during the rise of a new God; the main character of both stories ends up with an injury that changes his life; both stories deal with themes of family, particularly losing them; and both stories deal with themes of reincarnation, either metaphorical or literal.

I refuse to take any of this seriously due to Why Would I. He feels like his brothers have found their roles (obviously Tommy is The Heir, George is the next in line/intelligence agent (SPY says George, I am a SPY GUY)/intellectual, Owen is the artist/theological scholar, Ned is Happy Youngest Son Wife Guy (Defender) and then there’s Meg, who Liam is so close to but Meg has always known what she wanted to be - A Knight General. They were never in doubt.

And Liam, being the third of five eventual sons figures that there has be one kind who is just here to party in OTL and so…he’s not like anything awful but he is also very much ‘drinking, fucking and partying’ actually there’s a moment where he and his friends might like, trash an inn and his Dad Thomas is Disappointed which kind of shocks him out because OH SHIT I MADE DAD SAD :((((.

the constant mentions of susan returning and the red herring of susan triad is not just a red herring. it would be weird to have her brought up that much and not actually do anything. sutekh was luring the doctor in - why? and what’s his leverage? why lure him in with promises of his granddaughter unless he actually has susan? what if susan is his leverage over the doctor? sutekh gains control of the universe or susan dies

the toymaker, maestro, the mara and the trickster were all mentioned - but only the trickster hasnt showed up recently, in the main show or in extras. toymaker in the giggle, maestro in TDC, the mara in the S20 minisode - why mention the trickster at all if he’s not relevant? ruby’s “mother” is the trickster. it wasnt pointing at the doctor, but rather at the tardis - or sutekh. the trickster is bending reality by sutekh’s side, bc i dont remember sutekh being too fussed about bending reality, whereas it was the tricksters whole thing in sja

whenever the trickster pulls someone from reality in sja, they were in an entirely white void. whenever something significant/emotional happens to ruby, it snows.

sutekh’s last minions were just robots dressed as mummies - not humans slotting themselves into peoples lives, and certainly not children (henry arbinger). but the trickster did use a child to his advantage in TToSJS

susan triad said she gets her ideas from her dreams - what should we expect to see from her? self driving ambulances? bubbles? space stations?

we saw both susan and harriet turn into the creepy skeleton minions after sutekh revealed himself, but not mrs flood, who clearly also works for sutekh. is she the trickster? is she ruby’s “mum’”? she’s been planted there for sutekh’s plan, but she’s clearly more important than h arbinger and s triad

i feel like it was glossed over far too quickly that carla was like “that’s the beast!” ?????? excuse me ma’am??????? not one single person acknowledged that and i feel INSANE

why was susan triad appearing in all those episodes?? was it just sutekh trying to taunt the doctor?? i think she was under something like a chameleon arch, and she’d have sworn she was human until her dying breath. she feels more like a sleeper agent than an undercover one

in conclusion (for now) i feel absolutely insane. i have been vibrating all day and i dont think i breathed during that episode. im going to sleep for 46 hours and hopefully ill wake up normal
