Been slowly learning ASL over the years for my niece and I might still struggle to introduce myself or express basic emotions, but oh boy do I ever have the sign for every animal she's ever laid eyes on memorized better than my own name.

I wanted to say, bc I saw someone mention Geralt as an example of a predetermined character in an rpg that works, that yeah, I fully agree it can work! But in Geralt's case, for example, he's a well established character who's fully written before you start the game. He has his own traits, his flaws and shortcomings, history, relationships, etc. He's just as well written as any other character in the story, and the only things you have power over are his choices and a bit of his fighting style(sometimes his hair as well), but everything is made to fit with who this character is as established before the game even starts. Think of the origin characters in Baldur's Gate 3, it's the same thing- they're not customizable, they're established before you even start, and the only control you have is over their journey. None of these are ever meant to be a blank slate, and they're written as such.
With this Phyre character it's like they're trying so so hard to tread the line between "this is a character that stands on their own" and "this is a blank slate you can fully customize". What you end up with is a very "meh" sort of character, who's not one or the other, without enough wiggle room to make your own story however you want and not enough to get attached to them as they are. We get attached to Geralt bc he's a fully written character in the game, you just control his actions. The problem with Phyre is that they're neither a fully written character nor fully yours to write.

You may have answered this before, but how are you handling characters that don't believe in starclan, like mothwing and cloudtail? Personally I thought it was interesting when reading the books, considering cloudtail, but only to a point because it's very hard to write atheist characters in a setting where there's undeniable proof of the gods/spirits/etc. Like, how did they explain the literal forces of heaven and hell battling on earth??
As An Atheist Myself ā„¢ I have a lot of feelings about the two of them. I think the short answer is just that in a setting where gods are literally undeniable facts of life, "Atheism" looks more like Dystheism, the belief that they exist, but are not worthy of worship.
That seemed to be the conclusion at the end of Mothwing's... i forgor the name of her novella šŸ’€Mothflight's Blaspheme Boogie. It's actually why it's one of my favorite novellas, I really like the way it closes out with Mudfur trying to sales pitch StarClan's goodness to her, she doesn't buy a fucking penny of it, and ultimately concludes that the comfort it provides to her Clanmates is valuable to them but doesn't have to be for her.
So that's how I want to handle them. They have an outsider perspective to the fact that this is a theocracy, based on gods that can be vindictive and vengeful. Scourge/Iceheart is also joining these two, he actually is going to have a minor but important role in Squirrelflight's Horror as a ghost basically giving insight to what happens when you don't worship StarClan when you die.
With him and Mothwing I really know what I'm doing. Mothwing is insight to Leafpool, especially in TNP where she is now a POV, and observing how the though of StarClan influences the behavior of the cats around her. Scourge is killed in the Great Battle and serves as a ghost to witness their trial. Cloudtail...
Cloud's still evolving. He's going to be a supporting character with Ferncloud in her SE and exploring the feelings he has towards Ashfur, now his apprentice, becoming a villain. How he did his job perfectly, raised him with a deep respect towards the warrior code, and that lead to the person he is today. How he couldn't have done things "better" because this DID raise him the way his society expected him to.
But his dystheism is kind of secondary to that. I think the story I've got for him is fine so far, but it needs more of an 'ending' that I can't decide on until they finally kill him in the main books.
#Bone babble#honestly chief I hate that Cloudtail is still alive#I wish that ThunderClan lost an elder in that last outbreak#I profoundly dislike how the elder's den contains 4 cats the Erins found too marketable to kill#3 of them from the same litter#In my heart Brackenfur died in Po3 and Brambleclaw followed him as deputy#And Thornclaw is a villain#It's FRUSTRATING that they can't let go of these TPB cats and their dynamics as a group are boring#They're nothing like the elder's den in TPB because THAT elder's den actually had dynamics#One-eye was old and wise but hard to get information out of because of her age#Smallear was a frequent problem and extremely nasty#Half and Patch were more friendly and welcoming especially to Cloudpaw#That's good!#But THIS elder's den is generic nice old people now. If they even get screentime at all#Wasted opportunity to turn Thornclaw into the new Smallear#especially since we had a whole thing with Nightheart being a brat#You could have swapped the Bracken cameo with any other elder and it would have been the same#Cloudtail should have been dead by now#Dead actually doing something#In fact fuck like... ONE change to the warrior series without changing anything else?#Cloudtail should have gone into the DF to confront ashfur not fucking Graystripe#Squilf's cousin and ashfur's adopted brother#graystripe stop DOING this to me I LIKE you im one of the only people in my circle who DOES#You're ANNOYING with how much screentime you soaked up you dripping wet writer's pet#Cloudtail hasn't done anything in like 20 years#He's still completely coasting off being a TPB cat#Can't believe this turned into Yelling at Cloudtail hour

Since it feels like all I've done is complain about stuff lately, how about something more fun? I had these GIFs prepped but not rendered when my computer died and now as I'm reinstalling everything, I thought I'd see if my Vegas survived. So, let me present to you... Halo: Reach - Noble Six's adventures with Mongeese!
I was playing Pillar of Autumn for funsies a while back when I realized that, although I could still hear Emile, he wasn't following me on his Mongoose like he usually would've been. I backtracked and something caught my attention from the corner of my eye...
Tumblr media
There's usually a spare Mongoose there but, errrr, what was happening here? šŸ‘€ So I went into the Theater to catch it from a different angle because, well, I'll show you what I thought I saw in the last GIF in this post. šŸ˜²šŸ˜‰
Tumblr media
Another angle shows... umm? šŸ‘€
Tumblr media
Yeah, for some reason (probably me backtracking and hitting the load zone again or something), a second Mongoose spawned out of the first. šŸ‘€ (I poked it to see if it was real or not, lol! Yep, it was solid!)
Tumblr media
But, honestly, the whole situation abruptly felt cursed so I abandoned all three and went looking for Emile on foot. I found his Mongoose but no Emile. (Apparently he fell off a cliff or something because he eventually just spawned into the next section out of nowhere. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø)
Tumblr media
Sometimes, Thingsā„¢ just happen to Emile. šŸ‘€šŸ‘€šŸ‘€
Anyway, I decided to take his ride and...
Tumblr media
But, like I said, I'll show you exactly what I THOUGHT I saw out of the corner of my eye at the start. Yes, I legit made a GIF of this. No, there's no need to thank me. I'm just happy to be able to put this here for your eyeballs to see. Enjoy, friends, as a gift from me to you! šŸ˜œ
Tumblr media
All right, so you've quite possibly seen everything, now that you've seen some frisky Halo Mongeese, lol! šŸ˜‚
Annnnnnd I'll see myself out...
Tumblr media
Goodbye and catch you later, frens! šŸ¤—šŸ˜šŸ’–

also. not that i have to justify myself to the people who follow my anonymous tumblr blog. but it is perhaps obvious to those who engage with my posts regularly that i really do not talk about palestine or israel on here despite often talking about my jewish practice and synagogue life. and that is for two reasons 1) i look at my own blog when i am sad which is like three times a day so i like it to be filled only with nice or funny things and frankly thinking in public about i/p and the war is overwhelmingly distressing to me. which is a privilege yes and we can argue about how i wield that privilege some other time but neverthless it's my blog. and 2) i am increasingly sure that my judaism has to be rooted in diasporic traditions that reject nationalism in all forms, and it is important to me to show in my own small way that a vibrant (and observant!) judaism exists outside israel. can be meaningful without israel. and in fact is often better without israel. and despite my synagogue currently being far too pro-israel for my taste my jewish identity is ultimately rooted in ritual and liturgy and intergenerational community and synagogue is where i get that. so

once again thinkin bout the thing of kurt being very chill about flings & one-night-stands but like. in regards to himself only being comfortable with thought of such with people that he. knows beyond a name. this is slightly diminished in cases of the other also not being human-passing (or passing but not being of earth), because the want for familiarity is very much tied to a fear of being seen as just an exotic novelty to add as a conversation piece with other non-mutants. he's long grown past accepting being seen as a sideshow attraction. really if given the choice he far prefers a friendship with benefits (even if the "benefit" happens only once) as opposed to a flat-out one-night-stand where he's unlikely to hear from the other ever again, & would prefer to start as friends even when the attraction is clearly mutual from the start. he needs to know to his bones he's desired beyond the "freak" factor.

Character Information: Commander Olo
Commander Olo
Name: Olo
Rank: Commander
Designation: Forest
Gender: Male (He/Him)
Affiliation: TĢøhĢ¶eĢ“ ĢµGĢ“oĢ·vĢ¶eĢørĢ·nĢømĢµeĢ·nĢøtĢµ The Fungle
Cause of Death: Electrical Shock (Tased by Jitil while covered in Fungle spores + water)
Personality:Ā
Although he may come across as gruff and unfriendly, Commander Olo is a rather caring soul. He worries deeply about those under his command, especially those who are newer to the army. He has a special soft spot for rookies. Heā€™s highly protective, and would do anything to protect the soldiers (or civilians) under his care.Ā
Olo is a dog person, he enjoys other animals for sure, but dogs are definitely his favorite.Ā
Olo doesnā€™t often explain his actions beforehand, instead, doing whatever he has to to ensure the plan is followed through. Afterwards, if thereā€™s time and questions, heā€™ll answer calmly. But usually, those who serve under him recognize that heā€™s been at this for quite a while, and trust his judgment.Ā
Story:
Olo is a soldier in the government, having worked with them since he was a young adult. He rose through the ranks rather quickly, and was assigned to the Mira HQ as a part of the security detail. It was mostly a figurehead position, but he was able to work with the scientists training the space-born animals.Ā
He gained quite the companion in a blue dog, that he privately named Ora, after his sister. Days on Mira passed in tranquility, and although he would never later admit it, Olo grew somewhat complacent.
And then Ora found a body. It was rather horrifying. To discover the body of someone he had just seen in the cafeteria not ten minutes prior. But the body was clearly old, with a large, circular stab wound.Ā
Olo spearheaded the mission to imprison the false Doctor, and it was he who first witnessed the transformation from human toā€¦thing. The alien was slimy, with a long tongue, and far, far too many teeth.Ā
Olo was able to kill the Imposter, and he was sent back to Earth for debriefing. Olo was sent from base to base, to help train new recruits, before being sent out on further missions, in a cycle that lasted for three years.Ā
At one point, Olo discovered a pair of aliens that called themselves Spiree. They were winged, gentle, and had intense protective instincts. They were a peaceful race, and Olo hid them from the rest of the Government. They were shapeshifters like the Imposters, and it was easy to disguise them and provide alibis. Eventually, they moved on to a planet deeper in the system, and Olo was happy to let them go, hoping they would find safety.Ā
During the fourth year of the War, it was decided that Olo, now a Commander, would be stationed in Polus, as that planetā€™s base was under particularly heavy fire.Ā
Olo served on Polus for the rest of the war, training rookies, fighting Imposters ,and keeping the base afloat. After a particularly hard series of events, Olo managed to finally convince the government to stop using Polus as a training ground, and get them to send him some more experienced soldiers. There wereā€¦less deaths, following that decision. Both from voting out believed Imposters and from Imposters killing the soldiers.Ā
Olo grew to be friends with his main crew, consisting of Chief Medical Officer Rouvan, Generals Rynn and Joris, and Officers Jitil and Odil. There was also a young Private who held the record for longest-lived new recruit on Polus, named Kyle. While other soldiers constantly moved on and off base, the seven of them stayed together for over a year.Ā
However, one night, there simply stopped being Imposters to fight. The soldiers stayed on base for a few more months, during which Olo discovered the secret of General Joris. He listened to their story, and although he felt no remorse for those that had killed his troops, he did wish the aliens the best of luck as they tried to live in a peace they had not known for generations. He even taught Joris several things the deceased general had not been able to, during those months with little else to do.
Ā But without anything to fight, the government finally called the soldiers home. While the seven friends were split across Earth, Olo managed to stay in closer communication with the gold and silver siblings. And although he spent several long months completing paperwork that simply could not have been done from across space, he kept an eye on their missions, as well as the missions of the other four.Ā
Olo, after his successes in the war, was placed in charge of dealing with the Toppats. He spearheaded several missions, some succeeded while others failed. Finally, after catching wind of a submarine that would be playing a key role in several upcoming missions, he was able to recall one of his friends to place them as the key member of the infiltration. Officer Odil went undercover, and Olo served as her contact.
After the mission went rather south, Olo recalled Odil, as well as her brother from the separate mission he had been on, and the three were set to enjoy some much deserved downtime.
Until they were called back for a top secret mission. Apparently, a high risk prisoner was being transported offworld, and would need to be escorted overseas in order to be processed at the space dock. The three soldiers would be placed somewhat undercover onboard a cruise liner. The official excuse for their presence being their vacation, however they would also have the prisoner within their sights at all times. The prisoner was being allowed a small measure of freedom aboard the ship, in exchange for the intel she had provided in exchange to be transported to the space prison.
However, the cruise didnā€™t go as smoothly as planned. Instead, the ship was attacked by a Toppat missile, in retaliation for some of the moreā€¦recent missions that had succeeded in preventing Toppat plans.Ā
Thankfully, all three soldiers as well as the prisoner survived the crash, however, there were also civilian survivors that would need watching over, as well as dealing with the inhabitants of the previously undiscovered island the survivors had found themselves on.
Olo did his best to keep the survivors calm, even going so far as to aid them in disposing of bodies as needed. However, he was helping them at the cost of wearing himself out. He grew more and more tired as the days went by, until one day, when he heard the soft voice in the back of his head, he gave into it. Allowing the Fungle into his mind. It calmed him, helping him move with a sureness he hadnā€™t felt in months. However, the two Officers quickly realized that he was no longer himself.Ā
Although Olo (or perhaps the Fungle) realized what was happening when Odil and Jitil lured him out to the beach early one morning, he put up no resistance. He recognized that they were doing what they believed best, and he knew through the hivemind of the Fungle that they were doing what they thought he would want as well.Ā
And on some level, he must have agreed with their plans, because he did not fight them. He simply smiled reassuringly at Odil, even as Jitil went behind his back, and forced the Taser against the nape of his neck.Ā
