uhhhhhhh ranking musicals i've seen in different categories (plus my school musical fuck you)
acting:
hadestown (saw the US tour cast in 2023) - phenomenal show all around. cast was great and easy to relate to.
& juliet (AUS cast in 2023) - so much better than the west end and broadway casts im not kidding. made juliet very youthful and full of spirit and energy. really really good esp. considering how many of their professional debuts it was.
hamilton (AUS cast 2022) - it was really good. almost cried a few times
moulin rouge (AUS cast 2023) - i fucking love this show like actually it's my second favourite
Legally Blonde (im not doxxing myself but it was my school musical and it was really fucking good fuck you) - well developed characters and interpretations, not the same as broadway cast but in a good way. i am biased tho sue me
chicago (AUS cast 2024) - solid cast, good singing and characters. less memorable than the others.
singing:
hamilton - it was good what else can i say
hadestown - WAIT FOR ME REPRISE IS MY ONE TRUE LOVE
chicago - again, it was really good
moulin rouge - it was good and FUN
& juliet - good and FUN
legally blonde - leads were all really good esp for a high school, some weren't as good as others bc less time learning to sing but it was still really good
dancing:
moulin rouge - self explanatory honestly
hamilton - also relatively self explanatory
chicago - again, self explanatory if you've seen it. although one person didn't properly extend her arms but it could be a mobility issue so it's fine
& juliet - not too much choreo but what i remember was solid
legally blonde - it was (mostly) good fuck you
hadestown - not much choreo if i remember correctly. there was ensemble movement but it wasn't DANCING
choreo/blocking:
hamilton: really effective esp at creating tension and stuff. just... very good
hadestown: good ensemble blocking. same points as hamilton really but hamilton did it better
moulin rouge: same as the other two but they were better slightly
chicago: very good at communicating stuff esp. with a smaller stage due to set taking up space AND without many additional set pieces.
legally blonde: BLOOD IN THE WATER MY LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!! we had the big feathery fans à la chicago
& juliet: IT'S GOOD IT JUST ENDED UP IN LAST :(
set:
MOULIN ROUGE!!!!!!!! THE SET IS MY FAVOURITE SET EVER ACTUALLY LIKE I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hadestown: really good set that effectively communicates what it needs to and has a good vibe. second favourite set ever. has a spinny stage and i love those. bit in the middle would go up and down if not on a tour but it was tour so no uppy downy bit. still good. band somewhat one stage! fun
hamilton: effectively communicates what it needs to, good for movement. SPINNY STAGE!!!!! very beige though
& juliet: it was fun. it was colourful. it was a bit tacky but the whole show it. thats why it's fun!
chicago: LOVE how the band was the main set piece. simple set but very effective and looked cool. the ladder bit scared me i was worried she'd fall lol
legally blonde: IT WAS GOOD DON'T KILL ME @newtish250. i didn't get to see it too much tho (backstage) but it was good
lighting:
MOULIN ROUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! big fancy amazing i love it so much
hamilton: does what it needs to do and does it very well. very good at creating focus
legally blonde: IRL FRIEND WHO DOESN'T HAVE TUMBLR YOU DID SO GOOD WITH THE LIGHTS ILY SO MUCH THEY WERE AMAZING!!!!!!
hadestown: same as hamilton, good at focus.
& juliet: fun sparkly good. dollar tree moulin rouge but thats the point
chicago: had pretty minimalistic lighting from what i remember but it was effective.
band:
hadestown
hamilton
moulin rouge
legally blonde
chicago
& juliet
costumes:
moulin rouge my babyyyyyyyyyyyy it's my favourite in everything except overall
hamilton: simple but effective
legally blonde: i am biased but they were good!!!
hadestown: i don't remember them too well but they were good
& juliet: fun sparkly a bit tacky BUT THATS THE POINT
chicago: not many costumes/variations but they were good
opening number (theyre all tied honestly but if i had to pick uhhhhhhh).
alexander hamilton - hamilton: it effectively frames the story really well and it's memorable and sets up leitmotifs or whatever they're called
welcome to the moulin rouge - moulin rouge: it's fun and sparkly and i like fun and sparkly things sue me
omigod you guys - legally blonde: does what it needs to do really well and the window thing is so cute!!! plus theres a dog in it
road to hell - hadestown: good at what it does, again a lot like hamilton in a good way. introduces characters well, etc.
all that jazz - chicago: sets up the vibe well. good, fun, etc.
larger than life - & juliet: something had to be last okay
act one closer:
non-stop - hamilton: IT DOES THE OVERLAPPING PARTS THING I LOVE THAT THING SO MUCH!!! it's really good and sets up the events for the next act well and i like it
so much better - legally blonde: i love it and its so good and i love it and we did so well and also the jacket turning thing is so cool
elephant love medley - moulin rouge: good, fun, narratively fits as an act one closer
why we build the wall - hadestown: feels a bit out of place bc of how epic wait for me is but it does work well as an act one closer.
it's my life - & juliet: fun and the swing thing is fun. not as good as the others
my own best friend - chicago: good but i don't remember it too well.
act two opener:
whipped into shape - legally blonde: HI IM BROOKE WYNDHAM AND WELCOME TO THE WYNDHAM WORKOUT DISK TWO CHALLENGE AND OUR DAILY COMMITMENT TO BEING THE BEST THAT WE CAN BE (Yeah!!!). it's good, it's fun, it's funny.
our lady of the underground - hadestown: i love persephone she's the best
backstage romance - moulin rouge: it was fun okay
i know a girl - chicago: i really hardly remember it but i dislike the ones below it
love me like you do - & juliet: FUCKING hate it but it's funny so whatever
what'd i miss - hamilton: it's boring and not even funny
end of musical:
find my way/finale - legally blonde: i usually dislike the last song in a musical but i really like this one. it's really sweet and brings everything full circle and yeah
we raise our cups - hadestown: i like it to some degree
finale - chicago: it was good! i remember it and it was fun
finale (come what may) - moulin rouge: i hate it less than the other ones
who lives who dies who tells your story - hamilton: boring as shit but a little sad ig
whatever the hell the finale is - & juliet: HATED IT
favourite song from each:
wait for me reprise - hadestown: I LOVE THIS SONG WITH EVERY FIBRE OF MY BEING IT IS MY ONE TRUE LOVE IT'S ACTUALLY AMAZING AND I WOULD ARGUE THAT IT'S ONE OF IF NOT THE BEST SONG FROM A MUSICAL EVER
legally blonde: THE ENTIRE SOUNDTRACK!!!!!!! (just kidding it's between blood in the water, chip on my shoulder, what you want, bend and snap, so much better, legally blonde, find my way/finale, take it like a man and whipped into shape. so like half the show. im nostalgic okay)
it's my life - & juliet: it was fun okay. he descended from the sky on a fucking swing it was cool
el tango de roxanne - moulin rouge: the endingggggggggggggg i love it so much
cell block tango - chicago: it's fun and im a basic bitch
non-stop - hamilton: it's fun and i love the overlapping bit at the end. i just like the others better

Just wanted to say you kinda opened my eyes with your post about public transit a month ago. I am deathly afraid of public transportation. I guess seeing all the news and videos of horrible things happening on buses and subways made me ignorant of the fact that it’s just people. It’s just people. And that’s awesome. I’m gonna go ride a bus and thank the driver
I would never claim that nothing terrible happens on the bus---I've read those news stories too, to deny that it's possible would be flatly incorrect. Even in just my personal experience, there are dismissive, rude or belligerent people everywhere. People smell...different, especially when everyone is sweating through their winter coat, and unfortunately we can't convince certain members of the human race to buy some damn headphones. Still, I've been living in Chicago since 2010 and have never owned a car; I take a lot of buses and ride in a lot of taxis, I've biked from River North to Edgewater, taken the El from O'Hare down to Woodlawn, and ridden the Metra to the surburbs, to other states.
And I love public transit. I write about how much I love it with an almost unwell frequency---how it's a vehicle for grace, how the people who work there can be delightful, that it brings you into contact with people you wouldn't ordinarily meet. I still think about this article from Chicago magazine, where CTA workers were interviewed to talk about the highs, lows, and general insanity of the job. To recount every person I've had an unexpected conversation with, or shared a meaningful glance, or just admired from a distance as they gave up their seat, would take more time than any of us have.
Ultimately, everyone has to make their way through the world. When you realize that that's all people are really doing on the bus---or the train, or the subway, or the streetcar, or whatever other public transit is available to you---the idea of sitting alongside them doesn't seem so monumental. Everyone there just wants to get where they're going, and maybe arrive a little better than when they left.

Hey, will you be in Chicago on Monday Nov 4 at 7pm? Then come to Cafe Mustache you asshole. We are reviving "THE SKEWER" which if you don't know is a legendary Chicago comedy institution that everyone respects. Tom from the Anime Sickos hosts an incredible lineup feat @drdemonprince, Joe from the Anime Sickos, Tom McHenry, Sara McHenry, Josh Watkins and erica dreisbach. This shit is going to be so funny but if no one shows up I'm going to go insane so please make it out. This shit is for free also
