she doesn't go all out, even though she wants to. doesn't invite dozens of people or throws a huge party where you can't come in if you didn't bring an extravagant gift, even though she thinks he deserves it. but she refuses to do nothing and just let the day go by. she has books as a gift, all wrapped together in colorful paper; a mixture of fiction and non-fiction, some of which with titles she frankly didn't understand but thought they sounded smart enough for him. but at the end of the day, a cake had felt like the best place to start. she reaches for the lighter in her pocket so she can light up the candle. ↳ HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CHISHIYA!

Chishiya really HADN'T expected to escape Pat's determination to celebrate his birthday no matter what he might claim. When she was determined to do something, there was very little that could truly dissuade or stop her. He just wasn't sure WHAT he should be expecting. Such things are DIFFICULT when you've never celebrated a birthday before ; movies and shows are hardly a good reference and his family has never celebrated them. Not beyond something the hospital staff did for them and then it was only indulged for the sake of others and image. Nothing at home, nothing private. So how should he know what to expect? Other than Pat loves to go big and EXTRAVAGENT. The lack of people in Chishiya's life might be a blessing in the way it would inherently limit possibilities. Probably. Maybe.

Surprisingly, a LOT of the day seems to pass just like any other day. It soothes a bit of the prickling unease in his chest that had occasionally flitted about the rafters of his chest like sparrows in the rafters of malls. Predictably, he doesn't get a text or call from either parent, but that's fine. He'd be more concerned if he DID. It's just a normal day.

Until he finds himself staring at a cake in front of him, and then turning to look towards Pat. " A wish? " He seems genuinely surprised about that particular NOTE on what he should do as she lights the candle. HE'S NEVER MADE A WISH BEFORE. Never wrote to Santa or wished on a shooting star, never at the 11:11, never wrote on an ema to hang at one of the shrines. It all seems rather silly and nonsensical. He stares at the candle as she lights it and struggles to think of something. It's funny, really. He feels more pressure NOW than any other time. He gives a small shake of his head but there's a tiny smile on his lips before he blows out the candle before hot wax can drip all over the cake that smells delicious.

Points to Pat, she certainly had been taking notes on his preferences because he doesn't remember explicitly telling her his favorite flavor but it is.

His body language gives it away even before he can say anything after the first bite of his slice of cake. There's a bit more brightness in his eyes and he savors it - which he doesn't tend to usually do with food. " This tastes amazing. " He smiles, delighted to take a second bite when he pauses. His throat bobs as he stares at her for a moment.

" Thank you. " The words comes out softer than his earlier statement but no less genuine. He's sure she probably has more to the celebrations, at least a gift of some sort (which he certainly will be pleased with the books ), but that's not his focus. He knows this isn't how SHE would want to spend hers. It had probably been akin to a particularly difficult task to keep the celebrations rather toned down. It's THAT which hits him the most out of everything she's done for today. She hasn't made the day into her vision. It had still been focus on him in its subtle kind of way. And maybe his reply was only two words but they were so genuine that Chishiya feels exposed and open for the honesty that he offers - different than deathbed (deathroad?) confessions and other talks. He's not sure HOW exactly, but it feels different.

It doesn't feel bad.

He diverts his attention towards and take a second bite of his cake with another little smile. Finally, an admission. " Okay, okay. MAYBE celebrating isn't so bad. " He rolls his eyes but it's done only in a lighthearted manner as he glances back to her face. " Now start eating or I might steal your slice too. " Even if there was a whole cake. Everyone knows stealing food from someone else makes it more delicious. / @cartelheir

He gave her a nod and a grunt in response as he took a seat in the chair across from her, returning to his beloved coffee mug. He raised the cup to his lips, momentarily enjoying the sensation of warmth spreading through his hands from it. "Not to brag but, every New Years, I make it my goal to be in bed by 9:00pm, given that I'm not patrolling that is," he said before finally taking a large gulp of the steaming hot liquid. "But hey, there's always next year. What did you even drink that got you so fucked up?"

Specific characters have repeat sprites within their sections. The reason for this is unknown, but I have to assume these sprites are used as placeholders, either in place of sprites that were once meant to be made but never were and so pre-existing sprites were saved over, or perhaps for specific coding purposes. Either way, I will list them out in order.

bustup_01_29 and bustup_01_30 are repeats of bustup_01_00.

Togami (02)

bustup_02_15 is a repeat of bustup_02_00.

Kuzuryuu (07)

Though none of Kuzuryuu's sprites are repeated in the files, there do exist a version of each sprite with and without an eyepatch, even if that version is never used in the final game.

Nanami (09)

bustup_09_23 is a beta version of bustup_09_22 still left in the game files. Oddly, the sprite is low quality despite every other sprite's resolution being upped to match the PC port. This isn't due to the fact that the sprite goes unused, as the anti-piracy message screen is also upped in quality in the PC port, despite the fact it has never been used outside of the original PSP version and thus can only be found by looking through the games files.

This beta sprite is not lost in a HQ, however, as it is mistakenly reused for a character card in UTDP.

Pekoyama (15)

bustup_15_21 is a beta version of bustup_15_00 that goes unused in the files. Like Nanami, it suffers from low quality. I have yet to find an HQ version of this sprite used anywhere else, sadly.

It can be a little hard to tell but please direct your attention to her left ear. The beta sprite has much more volume to the ear than the final sprite. This is the same one mistakenly used in the Student Handbook in the PSP version of the game (also low quality). If you locate a piece of merch, section in a game or anywhere else that has a HQ version of this beta sprite please let me know!

Monokuma (16)

bustup_16_40 through bustup_16_53 are all un-shaded, slightly bigger versions of bustup_16_00.

(if you want to be technical, it's actually an un-shaded version of DR1 Monokuma sprites, as SDR2 Monokuma has an added outline to the black part of him that DR1 lacks.)

Monomi/Usami (17)

bustup_17_22 through bustup_17_29 are all beta, uncolored and slightly bigger versions of bustup_17_00. This was back when Monomi's cheeks had black outlines, which was a staple of her beta sprites.

CHAPTER TEN: PRIDE

Golden Child series

SYNOPSIS: A cabin in the woods isn't enough to get away from Gojo.

You asked Yaga to give you a leave of absence until further notice in order for you to do what you needed to do.

He was hesitant, especially when you wouldn't tell him what your plans were, but you were determined and adamant.

Those were two things he had never seen from you before, so he agreed. He knew the reason was because you had been spending too much time with Gojo.

Even though you weren't legally an adult, you traveled alone to a cabin in the woods that you rented for the time being.

You would need all the privacy you could get for what you were going to research.

Chiaki and Ayumi hadn't spoken to you about what happened. They pretended as if nothing happened, but you could tell that they were being held back from speaking.

They didn't appear as much before either. Ayumi usually threw a fit when she felt Gojo nearby, but she hadn't come out to insult him.

Opening the book in front of you, you prepared to slide the knife in your dominant hand across your other palm, when a cold hand grabbed your wrist.

"What are you doing?" Chiaki questioned as Ayumi silently pushed your palm down.

"I needed to get your attention," you said. "It worked, didn't it?"

"Drawing your blood on your own accord is something you must absolutely not do," he scolded.

"Does this have anything to do with Hell? I deserve to know, especially when you raised me for slaughter."

"We didn't know it would turn out like this," Ayumi whispered.

"You mean more to us than we ever thought you would," Chiaki added.

"Why?" you asked.

He shook his head softly. "We can't tell you until you're ready, but just know this, Ama: you've come farther than anyone else."

"You're not telling me what I want to know," you retorted.

"We can help you with whether you need. We are bonded to you, but we can't tell you what happened until the time comes," Ayumi said.

You hated how they refused to tell you anything. They had been with you for years and you considered them family.

"As long as you'll help me get stronger, I don't care. I will become the strongest person alive."

"Even with that blue-eyes freak alive?" Ayumi retorted.

"You're not killing him," you said, stern. "He's a friend."

Chiaki's lip twitched. "I see. What a shame."

You took a deep breath as Chiaki and Ayumi regarded you carefully. Despite their cryptic words, you knew they cared for you in their own way.

And you needed their help to grow stronger, even if they disapproved of your friendship with Gojo.

"Let's clear something up. I control you. Not the other way around," you said.

Chiaki and Ayumi nodded. They knew your fate. There was something bigger and better than everyone else. Ultimately, you were their master and the only thing keeping them alive.

Over the next few weeks, you trained relentlessly under Chiaki and Ayumi's guidance. While you knew they weren't only the manifestations of your rage, they knew a great deal of the Jujutsu world. You were sure it simply came with their birth and creation.

They taught you advanced jujutsu techniques and pushed your cursed energy to new heights.

Your power grew exponentially as you learned to better harness your mysterious abilities.

You started to take ice baths because of how sore you were each night. There were no breaks for you.

You wanted to say you despised Chiaki and Ayumi, but you knew they were doing what you ordered them to do.

One night, after your shower, you sat on your bed and meditated in the cabin. Your hair was wet and droplets of water dripped rhythmically onto your knees.

Every now and then, when you meditated, you could see glimpses of something. There was never enough for you to piece it together though.

Instead of a glimpse tonight, you were interrupted by a familiar presence approaching. You got up from your bed and opened the cabin door before he could knock.

He had the same smug grin on his face, as he did months ago. You definitely did not miss it.

"What are you doing here?" you asked.

He pouted for a moment before grinning again. "I'm going to be busy on a top-secret mission. Just thought I'd tell you in case you missed me."

"I won't."

"That's so hurtful," he said.

Gojo leaned against the door frame, his grin unfaltering. "Come on, you know you'll miss me at least a little bit while I'm gone."

You rolled your eyes, trying to ignore the flutter in your chest at his words. "I highly doubt it. I'll probably get more training done without you barging in and distracting me all the time."

"Distracting you, huh?" Gojo raised an eyebrow. "So you do find me distracting."

You were stunned, blinking rapidly as you stuttered, "N-No!"

Gojo chuckled, clearly enjoying getting a rise out of you.

A comfortable silence fell between you both.

"Just be careful on your mission, okay?" you finally said, unable to meet his intense blue gaze.

Gojo's expression softened. "I will. Don't worry about me too much. I can handle myself."

You nodded, knowing he was right. Gojo was probably the most powerful jujutsu sorcerer there was. Still, you couldn't shake the strange feeling in your chest.

"I should get going. Don't slack off on your training just because I'm not here to motivate you," Gojo said with a smirk.

You rolled your eyes again but couldn't help a small smile. "Yeah, yeah. Goodbye, Gojo."

He turned to leave, but paused for a moment. You were getting a bit worried at how long it was taking him to leave, when he turned around again.

"You have my permission to call me by my first name now," he said, haughty.

Your eye twitched. "Leave."

"This is an honor! You should be thankful," he retorted.

"I'm going to sleep," you said as you began to close your door.

You could hear his cackles as you locked the door. You stood there for a moment before sighing loudly and walking to the window. You opened the window and stuck part of your body out.

"Don't die yet, Satoru."

He froze in shock before grinning. "Yet?"

"I don't get to die without your permission, remember?"

He laughed. "That's right. You're learning."

He began walking away, waving to you from behind. You watched him go, your heart pounding against your ribs. You didn't know what you were feeling, but you knew you definitely missed his smile.
