The youngest girl in the family, Ruby, dies and the grief about this terrible loss is one of the main themes of this amazing, slowly paced novel. But it is also about trying to find a place to call home, about the relationships of the siblings Pei-Pei, Natty and the narrator who is a ten year old boy in that formative year the novel is situated in. Chia-Chia Lin shows how we are being shaped as the humans we are when we are young. "The Unpassing" is a great start and reading the acknowledgements, I see yet another author who has emerged from the Iowa Writers' Workshop.
