🌿BOOK REVIEW🌿 The Astonishing Colour of After • Leigh’s world falls apart when her mother dies by suicide. The only thing she left was a note: ‘I want you to remember.’ But Leigh has no idea what that means and on top of that, she is convinced her mother is now a bright red bird, and so she decides to travel to Taiwan to meet her maternal grandparents for the first time. • I’ve had a hard time trying to find the words to express my feelings about this one. First, it is beautifully written and the way Leigh expresses her emotions and feelings using colours is beautiful. Still this is a heart-wrenching story. Along the way we explore Leigh’s grief and how she copes (or doesn’t) with what has happened, going back and forth between the present time and memories from the past that Leigh can see whenever she burns objects that belonged to her mother. • My heart ached while reading this. The exploration of depression and its consequences. The grief and self-blaming the people left behind feel. The “what could have I done?” Or the “did I miss something? Could I have presented it?” are all questions that Leigh cannot answer, yet there are the only things in her mind. By the end I was a hot teary mess. I was hesitant because a lot of times suicide and depression can be romanticised in literature; however, this was not the case. This is a story about grief. The author did an incredible job conveying all emotions and making the story - magical elements included - believable (she has experienced the situation she’s writing about). And I highly recommend it. • • Have you heard about this? What was the last book that made your heart ache? 🌷 • • #bookreviews #igbookreview #theastonishingcolorofafter #emilyxrpan #magicalrealism #asianamericanliterature #booksoutside #booksandnature #unitedbookstagram #bookstagramit #bookstagramista #reseñaliteraria #leoyrecomiendo #bookstagramespaña #bookrecommendations #bookrecomendation #bookishthings #booksbooksandmorebooks #bookishfeature #bookfeatured

Today, more than ever, the plight of every racial minority will matter more than ever. Our voices are going to define the U.S. throughout the future, especially since we've become more multicultural. It feels surreal, but when I look through library catalogs and see more works by authors of color, everyone can see we're at a turning point where POC's voices will be continuously amplified. Earlier this month I wrote about possibly posting books I've read for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month; thanks to @mjvaughn1_author encouragement I've posted the books I've read - and am currently reading. I'm still working on getting out of my reading slump but, thankfully, I'm beginning to pull out of it! Here are my verdicts for each: Forward Me Back to You: Currently reading; contains trigger warnings (sexual assault), but a novel I feel is worth reading. The Downstairs Girl: This got me out of my slump! I'm still reading it but I enjoy Jo's spunkiness and optimism while navigating misogyny and racism as a 17 year old Chinese-American living in post-Civil War Georgia. Trigger Warnings: sexual harassment, mention of rape Loveboat, Taipei: A fun YA rom-com of a Taiwanese-American girl learning about her heritage while sticking up for herself! There are moments when the characters mess up cliche-style but Ever Wong, the protagonist, learns from her mistakes! Days of Distraction: A Chinese-American woman in her 20's going through relationship problems begins to question her actions, such as why she is dating a White man, and how American media has shaped her perception of herself. This is for those of you who prefer realistic contemporary fiction! QOTD: What are you currently reading? #asianbookstagrammer #asianguyanese #asianpacificamericanheritagemonth #asianheritagemonth #asianliterature #asianamerican #asianamericanliterature #asianauthors #forwardmebacktoyou #daysofdistraction #loveboattaipei #thedownstairsgirlbook #whatiread #currentlyreading #ebookstagrammer #bookstagrammer #ownvoices #poc https://www.instagram.com/p/CAy0HZjAzBu/?igshid=1dt00mgqlu0e1

Repost from @wondrousbeing - #Reposting my brother from another mother’s amazing post on Ken Liu’s #shortstory collection THE PAPER MENAGERIE for #asianamericanpacificislanderheritagemonth : #Repost @yooshin__ ・・・ as a kid, i devoured sci-fi. i read arthur c. clarke’s earth abides in 6th grade and wrote a 25 page short story by hand about traveling solo in a post-apocalyptic world. i set it in new york — despite never having gone — furnishing my descriptions with images straight out of ‘40s film noirs and musicals i watched on AMC, think kiss of death by way of on the town, a menace of technicolor. years later, i’d live in new york and finally cross the same george washington bridge i’d written about 20 years prior, smiling that my imagination wasn’t far off. this is why my first selection for API heritage reads is ken liu’s the paper menagerie and other stories. in techno-orientalist visions of the future, asia is only signaled as ornament, as aesthetic, as capital, as prop. real asians don’t live there. liu’s collection lets me peer out into the stars and see generations of myself from distant galaxies and histories refracted back. i never thought a sci-fi story could ever make me cry, but the title story does just that. now that i think of it, i’m sure my solo traveler was white. i’ll have to write it again, except this time it’ll be me. #apahm2019 #aapi #apahm #asianamericanliterature #asianamericanwriters #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookish #booklover #booknerd #bookworm #bookaholic #bookaddict #instabook #books #readersofinstagram #scifi #speculativefiction @wondrousbeing @swa_roc https://www.instagram.com/p/ByTnF2MBVUh/?igshid=1m81rbr2f2wyw

Book Review: The Name of Red by Beena Khan
I really enjoyed this book, and its a genre that I haven’t knowingly come across before: Asian American Literature. I found it very thought provoking. I also loved the two main characters and learning about their culture and how they see their world. It has been subtly written.
Also I’d like to thank the author Beena Khan for letting me have a copy of her debut novel.
One wet and wintery evening a beautiful mysterious woman walks in to Kabir’s bar. Every single man watches her, even some women watch her with jealousy in their eyes. However the woman doesn’t even notice them. All she is interested in is her book and copious amounts of alcohol.
Kabir is so taken with this woman who comes in every night, to drink and read her book. He watches her from afar and he sees how she rebuffs every man that goes up to her trying to strike up a conversation.
One night Kabir leaves a book at her usual spot on the bar with a note in it. For Kabir its the only way he can think of engaging with the woman, without being rejected by her. As he can’t bare to be rejected again.
Over a short period of time books are anonymously exchanged between them. Until she uncovers that it’s Kabir that is leaving the books for her. Before she can rebuff him he shows her part of his bar that is only used for special occasions.
One wall is covered in books, she walks along the wall of books, stopping now and then to read the names of the books. Then she comes across copies of the books they have exchanged with each other. At first she isn’t very happy about the situation but it turns out that Kabir already had these books or more than one copy.
Over time they build a trusting friendship. Where they both help each other heal their pasts that have haunted them. Except tragedy may strike as we find out why red drinks so much.
Pages: 328. Publication Date: 15 May 2020. My Rating: 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
