I had to stay at a hotel overnight for work on Monday night, and Emma was apparently a ball of anxiety over it - Mom doesn't leave after dinner! So once I got home on Tuesday, she buried her head into the back of my knees & I got this pic. 😂

Last intro post is Chi Chi, one of the Oakland Animal Services shelter dogs I took on a field trip recently.

She is young, energetic, loves people, and is eager to learn. A pittie mix of sorts based on looks. She was very on edge at the shelter but calmed down a lot once I took her to a less loud and dog-filled environment.

As of the time of this post, she is still available for adoption!

I’ll be picking up my foster dog on Sunday, so until then her 10/10 smile will be my profile pic.

Admittedly I am not super well versed on some breeds, but after a lot of shows I find myself reading breed standards and illustrated breed standards put forth by the breed club and I find myself even more confused by the judges' decisions. Obviously I don't claim to know more than a judge, but... I really don't see what they do in some of these dogs.

I've noticed a lot of the reasons people seem to hate small dogs overlap with why they hate cats, which almost always boils down to "this animal doesn't let me do whatever the fuck I want with it and I don't like that!" Very weird to admit you don't like animals that expect you to listen to their boundaries and will bite you otherwise but ok.

Anyway, I am a passionate Chihuahua and cat defender now even if sometimes I gotta go to bat for other little dogs. Listen to their body language and behaviors and you won't find them quarrelsome!

You felt his arm wrap around your neck, holding you in a light headlock while continuously fucking into you like a dog in heat. Your eyes grew heavy, looking white from how far you’ve rolled them back. Chifuyu’s eyes turned to admire his husband’s fucked out face, driving him to press a heated kiss against your swollen lips. It was sloppy, nasty almost. Chifuyu practically almost swallowing them while you clumsily attempted to synchronize his movement.

“Too much for ya? You look like you’re gonna pass out..”

He chuckled, showing off his fangs that you adored so much. You tried to speak, yet your words were slurred and wispy. You couldn’t mutter anything past a moan in your failed attempts to warn your husband about your impending orgasm. He was right, you were so fucked out and so hot from the stuffy air that you were almost dumbified. Unable to think about anything that wasn’t the tip of his cock that kissed your cervix.

“Cummin’..”

You silently sobbed, following with another chuckle that bubbled in his throat. He freed you from his grip, causing you to stumble and place both hands on the kitchen counter while one of your legs suddenly wobbled. You turned around and nearly came at what you saw.

He followed that up with his thrusts growing sloppier and desperate as your nails scratched at the counter. Your mouth dropped, letting out one final mewl before a gush of warmth overtook your body. Your head snapped back to face him, watching his eyebrows turn upwards as he bites back a moan. The sun made his blue eyes bright, as blood rushed back into your cheeks from the view.

You reached out, shaking hands as Chifuyu finally came. Painting your walls white, the ravenette breathed heavily until your hands were touching his pink cheeks. His skin was burning hot and sweaty from the sun bathing his body.

You could only stare, no words could be muttered between the both of you. Only smiles and flushed faces.

On Friday, I’m bringing this precious girl home 💜

Her name is Eden. She’s a silver (usually called blue) merle smooth-coat chihuahua. She’s 1.5 years old and was meant to be part of a breeding program, but because she’s a merle, she cannot be CKC registered, and ethically speaking, shouldn’t be bred anyway.

Merle chihuahuas are predisposed to genetic defects/disabilities, particularly when two merles are bred together. Unfortunately, there are unethical breeders out there who would breed specifically for dogs with coat patterns and eye colours like this, regardless of the danger to the puppies’ health, and then charge a ridiculously high price to unsuspecting people who think they are getting a rare, high-value dog. This is why it’s super important to do your research before getting a dog/puppy, especially if you want a specific breed, and MOST ESPECIALLY if it’s your first dog:

Luckily for Eden and her sister, the breeder is highly ethical and has not bred them, choosing instead to have them genetically tested and cleared, and then finding appropriate forever homes for them with people who will agree to sign a neutering contract.

Sailor is actually also a merle and I had to agree to getting her spayed too. Sailor is a “ghost merle” who carries the merle gene but doesn’t have the spotted coat pattern. These are especially problematic because without testing, dogs like Sailor might accidentally be bred with another chi who carries the merle gene.

What advice do you have for a prospective first time chihuahua owner? My partner and I have been looking at small breeds (we have a yard, but our actual house is a little too cramped for a big dog), and chihuahuas have made our list of top potential choices! Any "if this applies to you, chi's probably are/aren't a good fit" kind of things is greatly appreciated!!

This is going to be a really long answer otherwise, so I think you should read Chihuahuas for Dummies. Not because I think you're a dummy, but because I read it before I got my first chihuahua and I actually learned quite a lot about the breed- it was written by someone heavily involved in breeding and showing and the history of the breed, so it's far more comprehensive and educational than one might expect. I was happily surprised by the quality of content of this $5 book, to say the least!

what can you tell me about Bernese Mountain Dogs and Apple Head Chihuahuas? (the first is my linktype, and I'm just a chihuahua person lol (I've had about seven chihuahuas in total))

another working dog! from switzerland :) (specifically around the swiss alps) i learned in grooming school that they are descendants from roman mastiffs! they are a farm dog breed

they were used to pull carts of product for farmers, considered an “all purpose dog” by most of them. their muscles made them very durable!

while double checking my facts i also learned they’re sometimes called “cheese dogs” haha!!!

apple head chis first of all are some of the most adorable dogs ever. they classified by their rounded heads and shorter snouts! these little dogs do come with a lot of potential health issues, however, so if you ever own one it’s good to set yourself up with pet insurance and look into potential health problems you may run into down the line!

they are sometimes called chi-chis or hua hua! also the teacup chihuahua

there is the apple head and deer head chihuahua! chis are the national dog of mexico, ancient drawings can be found of these fantastic protective little dogs throughout central america, most likely descendent of an ancient small dog breed. some think that breed may have cross with chinese crested dogs (another one of my favorite breeds) to give us the chis that we love now!! they were most likely discovered in the 1800s

I also mentioned this in my eulogy...

I said that we had pet newts as children. However, when I went to look up pet newts, none of them looked like what we had. In fact, I couldn't find any lizards that looked like what we had. Perhaps they were some kind of lizard that was a popular pet in the 80s but fell out of favor with pet stores.

In any case, the mystery lizards are sneaking into Doggie Heaven.

And, of course, there is my dad's famous John Deere riding mower that he used to take Otis on countless walks.

And Chris included all of the beloved doggos of my childhood.

My first was a Welsh Corgi named Buttons.

She would walk me more than I walked her...

Then we adopted a Cairn Terrier named Reggie.

Reggie was found at an illegal breeding facility and rescued. He was kept in a cage nearly all of his life and it pained him to walk on hard surfaces for several months until his paws healed. We suspect he was abused by a large male, because he was terrified of my dad when we brought him home. He would run under the bed anytime my dad entered the room. This was probably the ultimate test of my dad's dog whispering powers. He slowly and patiently worked with Reggie, devising all kinds of creative trust exercises. He would lay on the floor with his belly exposed and start crying and acting sad. Trying to show Reggie he was harmless and pathetic and nothing to fear. And every time Reggie got close, my dad would bribe him with cheese.

And just like every other dog we've had, my dad won Reggie over and they became best friends. They were constant cuddle buddies.

No other large male could ever get close to Reggie. My dad ended up being the only one he would ever trust.

We felt Reggie could use a companion to help cure his trauma and depression and maybe help him socialize a little better.

So... we got a puppy!

My first ever experience with a puppy. He was a West Highland White Terrier--commonly referred to as a "Westie."

We wanted a name that paid respect to his Scottish heritage and we loved this popular show on the boob tube in which a man fixed things with chewing gum and a paperclip.

So I suggested we name him after that favorite TV hero...

Angus MacGyver!

Or "Mac" for short.

MacGyver was a bit like Otis 1.0. He was a tiny ball of energy. He loved to play. He was mischievous, but always cute about it, so he rarely got in trouble. Though he was not nearly as smart as Otis. If dogs could take IQ tests, Otis would have tested as a genius. I am embarrassed to admit how often I was outwitted by a hairy loaf with legs.

But MacGyver was just a normie. Not dumb. Not a genius.

Reggie didn't know what to do with a puppy at first. But once Mac grew up a little and calmed down a lot, they did end up being proper pupper pals.

Doggo dudes.

Canine cohorts.

Scottish scalawags.

Reggie mostly just sat at a distance as MacGyver did dumb things. Mac would get into trouble and when we caught him, Reggie would just stare at us like, "I was an impartial observer. I had no part in these shenanigans."

And last, but certainly not least... I think you all remember this troublemaker.

My dad was all cuddles and play time.

But my mom and Otis had a very special relationship as well. Otis would "help" my mom with her chores. They'd go from room to room and my mom would do her cleaning and dusting and vacuuming. And Otis would disrupt all of it--to her delight. She liked to talk to him like he was an adult human. She swore he could understand her. They'd just gab and clean.

Their antics doing chores together inspired one of my favorite Corg Life comics that Chris also drew.

So, thank you to Chris for always creating such beautiful things for me.

I have another probably absolutely niche thing to rant about that has absolutely nothing to do with my blog but it’s my blog so I can do whatever I want.

But as someone who owns a chihuahua, I’m absolutely pissed at how the dog-community treats chihuahuas. Especially people who call themselves trainers. It’s so fucking annoying.

Of I have to listen to one more person say that chihuahuas are the worst dogs ever and the devil incarnate and absolutely untrainable and how they’re horrible dogs in general, I will murder someone.

Because my chihuahua used to act exactly how these people imagine a chihuahua to act when I got her: loud, "aggressive", running away, not listening at all. She screamed and yowled at everything that moved.

Not because she was "aggressive", but because she was fucking terrified and this behaviour is the last resort of dogs when you overstep their boundaries to often.

Do you know how she behaves now, years later, after living with us for a while? After being actually trained and treated like a real dog, not a toy?

She acts like a real dog! Yes, she sometimes still growls a bit at people who get to close to her, but that’s normal. She’s small and afraid and this is the only way she has to let people know she’s there. What do you expect her to do? Risk getting stepped on? If she barked, the reaction would be the same.

We got her when she was two. She’s seven now. And she’s such a great dog, and I could cry at imagining what an awesome dog she could’ve been had she been with a good owner from the beginning.

But she didn’t have that. She had an owner who treated her like a toy, she never learned how to actually behave like a dog, she never got to learn how to interact with other dogs or people in a healthy manner. She had to learn all that well into adulthood! That’s extremely hard for a dog to do! She was neglected by her owner and thrown and kicked around by her owners visitors, which caused her to be absolutely horrified of any stranger that just existed near her.

We had to spent years building up her confidence so she wouldn’t try to bolt at any minor thing; and now, she’s so curious, so smart and so courageous! Trying out new things wherever she can, and sniffing on strangers, even sometimes letting strangers pet her! She’s doing so great. She’s happy.

And it pisses me off so much when people talk about how horrible chihuahuas are. Because my chihuahua used to be like this! And I know why! Because she was fucking abused. That’s what causes a dog to behave like that. Abuse of small dogs is so normalised that their abused behaviour is seen as reflecting their whole breed.

Chihuahuas are lively, intelligent, curious and, yes, they’re usually extremely stubborn and not very easy to train. People look at them and see a small, cute, "easy to handle" breed and buy them with zero knowledge of how to train a dog and how a chi is supposed to behave, because when a chi misbehaves, they can just "fix it" (with violence, usually). People see them as dog-shaped toys that don’t actually need all the things dogs need (like walks, enrichment, training); as little cutesy things they can treat however they want. And these poor dogs suffer for it.

And if any dog trainer says that a chi can’t be trained, that’s just them saying that they can’t handle a stubborn dog with very little trainer-focus and even less will-to-please. I wouldn’t trust those type of trainer with any dogs, they’re just outright saying that they only know one type of training-tactic and are unwilling to change it to fit the dogs' needs.

I fucking hate all of these people. Chihuahuas are awesome dogs, like any other dog, if you treat them right. And they deserve to be treated right.

Anti-small dog people are nowadays rarely just people who generally dislike small dogs, they’re people who will straight up tell you that your dogs should die and will scream and cry whenever one comes near them within 10 feet. Like the reason why small dog people are so fed up with you motherfuckers aren’t because you don’t like the breed, it’s because you call every terrier a “terrorist” and talk about your killer fantasy’s regarding Chi’s and Yorkies. Option 1: Chihuahua bestie has puppies due in a few weeks from my favorite dog of hers (iykyk the picture of the chi I wanted to smuggle out of a show)

Option 2: AHT mentor who has told me they would love for me to have one of their puppies is having a repeat litter from my favorite dog of HERS who is an absolutely stunning bitch who throws babies that look exactly like her

I feel like maybe the AHT would be the better choice since this is her second litter and I don’t know if she will breed her again. But also tiny super snuggly baby (god I miss having a dog that cuddles).

I'd like to weeb up the recommendations:

One stormy night: a story about a lamb that befriends a wolf and the two's adventure to stay together. There's a movie (with a decent fandub available on youtube) as well as an anime, though I haven't seen the anime.

Ginga densetsu weed: a sequel to silver fang (which also counts but humans are main characters in silver fang whereas they rarely appear in weed, also there's further spinoffs and sequel manga) about a pup whose father's paradise is threatened by other dogs so he sets out to build an army to fight back. It's a bit too graphic for little kids and it's an older work so its values are a objectionable at times, but its a fun very anime story with cool dog breeds.

Chi's sweet home: slice of life about a kitten who gets taken in by a family, and hangs out with the neighbouring cats. It's mostly cute and comedic. Much more human involvement than the others since bonding with her new family, especially the son, is part of Chi's story.

Houseki no kuni: is about a world where humans (and most life) are dead, and three races of gem, nudibranch, and lunarian people have taken their place, focused on the gems. It's very dark at times and deals with the story of Phos, a gem who shatters easily, as they slowly turn into a different person and unravel the mysteries of the world. Also very stylish art and a genderless main character.

A centaur's life: a slice of life story in a world where things evolved differently so centaurs, angels, mermaids, and other "6 limbed" beings replace humans. The xenofiction elements are on the lighter side, but much of the stories are focused on the accomodations, lifestyles, and politics of different races, particularly once the antarcticans appear.

Beastars: action drama about a wolf who falls in love with/wants to devour a rabbit and the very messy politics of a world where animals live together in a society. A lot about sexuality, cannibalism, black markets, and other adult topics, so very not kid friendly.

As for games:

dog's life: you play a dog out to save his girlfriend, who got kidnapped, by sniffing out trails and collecting bones. It's mostly lighthearted with a lot of bathroom humour.

Pokemon mystery dungeon: pokemon but you are the pokemon and go through randomly generated dungeons to solve mysteries and help your community. They have some of the best plots in the franchise imo.

I forgot about Beastars, I think I was too focused on more realistic animals, I love Beastars myself! Melon is one of my favourite all time characters lol

Also I have only played one mystery dungeon game (super mystery dungeon) but I loved that, been meaning to play more of those games for years.

The others I’m not personally familiar with outside of hearing about some of them.

Yesterday was a hard day. I’ve been missing Raul a lot, and realizing I may not be able to get another dog like him again, partly bc we can’t afford another dog rn, but also bc I really want another chi/italian greyhound mix and those aren’t the most common breed combo, and hubby doesn’t want another iggy bc they can have house training issues. I just really want another “velcro” dog like my Blondie 💔😭.
