Like the ever-dependable U.S. postal service, there’s one constant in dogownership: Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night … will keep you from having to walk your pup. So you’re going to want a leash that’s safe, reliable, weatherproof (if need be), and maybe even nice-looking.

“The goal is really to have your pet walking next to you while on a relaxed leash,” says Dr. Jennifer Maniet, staff veterinarian at Petplan Pet Insurance. “Certainly you want to ensure the material is durable and you want to make sure the connections of the leash to the collar or harness are well-made and secure.” While Maniet says it’s always best to consult with your vet when looking for the best leash for your pet’s individual needs, the ones below come highly recommended from our panel of veterinarians, dog trainers, and other canine experts.

1 PetSafe Premier Nylon Dog Leash

According to Stephanie Galas, manager at Pupculture Soho, “The most simple leash is your best leash.” Available in four-foot and six-foot lengths, she says this affordable, lightweight nylon leash from PetSafe is “not too long, not too short,” and just right for having your dog walk alongside you without bolting ahead.

2 Frisco Solid Nylon Dog Leash

Like Galas, Annie Grossman, owner and co-founder of School for the Dogsand co-founder of Store for the Dogs, prefers a no-frills leash. She stresses the importance of proper training instead of relying on a leash to keep your pup in check, saying, “The equipment, much like the seat belt in a car, should be there in case of an emergency, not something that you’re using to control your dog.” For a well-trained dog, Nikki Naser, resident pet expert at Chewy, likes this simple leash from Frisco, which has lots of options for color and width.

3 Mendota Products Snap Leash

Grossman says this leash, her favorite one, “is a very nice, sturdy, not super expensive nylon leash that comes in a couple of different weights and lengths.” She suggests choosing a length that’s just long enough that there’s a bend in the leash when you’re out walking (generally four to six feet long). “You don’t want a dog who’s out at the end of the leash,” she says. “Maybe if there’s a parade of squirrels across the street, you’re going to have to rely on your leash, but 99 percent of the time it should just be there as a safety precaution.” The waterproof leash also has handsome leather accents.

“I think that a leather leash is both beautiful and the easiest to grip for owners,” says Shelby Semel, senior trainer and founder of Shelby Semel Dog Training. She likes that leather leashes “have more of a permanent look than the nylon leashes that most people buy,” but she does recommend spending a week or two breaking it in (stretching and folding it), in order to soften the leather for maximum comfort.

Another attractive leather leash, this one is from the new, design-focused brand Fable. It comes in colors like blush and light gray, and with rose gold or matte black hardware.

For a good-looking nylon leash that’s also very functional, Grossman likes these ombre-dyed ones from Found My Animal. “It [has] a very solid clasp. It’s like a carabiner-style brass clasp and there’s a clasp on both ends which is nice because you can walk two dogs and hold it in the middle,” she says. Naser, also a fan, adds, “It’s made with marine-grade rope that can stand up to large dogs and heavy pullers, and you can adjust it to fit around your waist or over your shoulder.” The two-sided leash can also be attached to the dog in two places, as a collar and a harness, as is recommended by Sarah Fraser, co-founder and co-CEO of Instinct Dog Behavior & Training. “This way, if one piece malfunctions, your dog is still attached to you,” she explains. “It’s a small thing that can quite literally save your dog’s life.”

When it comes to dogs who chew up their leashes, Galas says, “it’s not the leash, it’s the dog.” She explains that owners need to train their dogs to understand that their leash isn’t a chew toy. For puppies that are still learning, or dogs that just can’t kick the habit, Grossman likes the durable and aptly named VirChewLy Indestructible leash. “It’s a coated metal leash that’s also pretty lightweight,” she says.

Like chewing, pulling on the leash is a behavior that can be managed through training. And while some think the solution is a leash with more give to it, experts disagree. “Flexible [or retractable] leashes or leashes with a bungee-style rope will not help your dog stop pulling on the leash and can actually encourage it,” says Erin Askeland, an animal health and behavior consultant at Camp Bow Wow. Instead, while you’re training your dog — or even if you just want the extra security — Naser likes this shock-absorbing leash. “It has a padded handle that evenly distributes the strain if your dog pulls,” she says. “It’s made of woven rope that’s designed to absorb shock.”

This chew-resistant dog bed has a waterproof, removable cover that’s machine-washable, so it’s tough and easy to clean.

Verified review: “It looks a bit plain: just a big, thick square pad with a cover that you zip on. However, it’s thicker than I expected, more like a plush pillow, and the cover feels very sturdy. The zipper is strong and easy to use. I’d feel confident removing and replacing the cover if I needed to. Though it’s not exactly soft to the touch thanks to its tough nylon cover (which feels more like a canvas tent cover, say, than a blanket), my dog loves this bed. She is very happy to flop out across it. I am pleased with its durability because after one month of use, she has yet to tear even a small hole into it. She occasionally scratches at it, as if to bury her toys in it, and hasn’t even made a dent. Verified Review: Our reviewer, a Rover sitter, found that both her own dogs and the Rover dogs she hosted were, as she says, “obsessed” with this bed, especially with the microsuede cover. (She observed that the denim cover was not as popular, possibly because the material was too stiff; but because it’s machine washable, a few runs in the wash could soften it up.)

One of her dogs who usually preferred the floor to his existing dog bed even took to using it. “He seems really comfortable and relaxed,” she said, noting that the bed was, “very high quality, felt great, and appears to be supporting his joints extremely well.”

The 10 Best Indestructible Squeaky Dog Toys for Chewers

It has been many years since I last had to think about toys for aggressive chewers.

Calvin is older now and doesn’t destroy toys like he once did. But now, with a new puppy in the house, it’s like living with a tornado of destruction.

Though she is just shy of 5 months old, she is teething, and as a result, she is continually chewing, and the majority of the toys we now have were not purchased with an aggressive chewer in mind.

So I needed to jump online and see what I could find.

Though we have a lot of teething toys that can be filled with soft food and put in the freezer, I had been hoping to find other fun toys for her to play with, since after awhile the same few toys tend to get boring.

I started looking for toys with a squeaker that could withstand her attention and the playstyle of the other dogs.

It’s funny how a new puppy will get older dogs playing with toys again.

Why Buy Indestructible Squeaky Toys?

There are a few reasons I want super durable toys and why you may want them, too.

First, Mirabelle still hasn’t learned everything she encounters should not be eaten, so my number one concern is safety[1].

Second, I don’t want to have to keep replacing toys. The reality is, it gets pretty darn expensive buying new toys every week.

Finally, I feel like I am constantly cleaning with four dogs, so adding shredded toys to my cleaning list isn’t something I am looking to do.

Though Mirabelle is still on the small side now, we expect that she will be at least forty pounds full grown, meaning her bite power and teeth will only increase.

Plus, puppies can teethe for quite some time, so I expect we will be dealing with this issue for another month.

And even after she grows out of the chewing on everything phase, I imagine she will still want to play with or chew on toys.

What I found during my research was pretty much what I expected, there are a lot of durable toys, but there’s always a dog out there that manages to get a corner or piece off even the toughest of toys.

When Daisy was a puppy, she chewed a KONG apart, so I know it can happen. The good news is that there are several different choices and functions.

Also, giving your dog appropriate chew toys can cut off more destructive behavior[2]!

I love goDog toys. They are soft and lightweight yet pretty durable for small dogs.

The exterior is super soft, and it doesn’t have any plastic eyes or nose, plus it has minimal stuffing making it a safer toy to be flung around the house.

Plus, the interior is made with Chew Guard Technology[3], which is a very durable liner, and the seams are double-stitched, reinforcing the overall strength of the toy.

Unfortunately, it didn’t hold up against Calvin, who later ripped it open, but he’s not a small dog, and he has chewed up firehose tots.

What to Consider When Choosing a Tough Toy

When choosing a durable toy with a squeaker, there are a few things to consider:

Your dog’s interests

Single or multi-functional

Its ability to float

How the toy is made

When I am considering different toys and their overall durability, I think about the various features or areas that may easily be chewed off.

For example, does it have arms and legs that will likely be amputated in play, or does the shape of the toy discourage chewing?

For example, the goDog Dragon is fine now, but when Mirabelle gets older, I have no doubt the wings will be the first to go.

So instead, as she gets older, I will replace the goDog with sturdier toys such as Tuffy.

Another factor I take into account is the weight of the toy.

We allow our dogs to play indoors and will throw a ball for them from time to time.

However, I prefer to use lighter weight toys for indoor fetch that will likely do less damage, such as the Gnawsome Squeaker ball.

Sturdier toys like the pineapple are suitable for outdoor play since toys made of hard rubber can take the different weather conditions and often wash-up well in the dishwasher.

Finally, when I am choosing fabric or plush toys, I prefer to choose toys with multiple layers of material, little to no fill, and reinforced seams, such as Charming Pet, Tuffy, and goDog.

Conclusion

We all want to keep our fur babies safe, and one the ways we can ensure we do this is by making sure the toys we choose for them are both entertaining yet also up to the task of being resistant to your dog’s chewing.

It’s hard to make just one recommendation.

Dogs have various interests, such as tug, fetch, or maybe they just like to play by themselves.

Mira loves playing ball, so I would recommend Gnawsome squeaker ball for other dogs who enjoy playing fetch. But Mira also loves her goDog dragon when she’s tired and just wants to chew on a toy before falling asleep.

My older dogs, especially Ginger, enjoy playing tug, so I recommend the Tuffy Tug O War as an indestructible toy.

And for dogs like Calvin, who loves the challenge of finding and destroying the squeaker, I would choose the M.C. Works Pineapple.

Overall, there are several great durable dog toys on the market.

Still, the reality is if you have a hard-core chewer, you must monitor them with new toys until you are confident they won’t chew the toy apart and possibly eat the small pieces.

Finally, keep in mind that squeaky toys and chew toys are two completely different categories.

If your dog loves to chew, then choose a chew toy made to be chewed on for long periods.

Except for the dental and treat dispensing toys, most squeaker toys are supposed to be more interactive than a chew toy.
