PLEASE NOTE: I made these fan redesigns before SSO released or teased any of their magic Gen 3 Shires. This can be corroborated on my Instagram account. All of my old Whinfell redesigns together. This was the project that first got me into redesigning and conceptualizing SSO horse breeds. I think there are some elements I probably would have changed had I worked on these today, but I'm still very proud of how the finished concept turned out as a collaborative project between my clubmates and I.
Which one was your favorite?
Zala: Clouded Crimson moth to chestnut-based fleabitten grey Ouranos: Pompelon Marginata moth to smoky black roan Fayruz: Comostola Laesaria moth to silver bay Tanzi: Gold moth to palomino roan Enfys: Mother of Pearl moth to mushroom Corcráin: Purple-Bordered Gold moth to dunksin roan Azahar: Painted Lichen moth to flaxen black chestnut Individual posts of the Whinfell redesigns: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] Original Lore Post: Here
Lore Transcript:
"Magic Horses on Jorvik are creatures of stories and folklore. As the tales are passed down over the ages, the legends of these horses have been kept alive…
The Whinfell are said to be spirits of growth and fertility. During the spring and times of harvest, these pollinating horses run through Jorvik, dropping iridescent scales from their fur that nurture and greatly enhance the growing power of any foliage they may land on.
This power also extends to the feathered fetlocks of the Whinfell which are a sight to behold, and Jorvegian folklore describes them as having the power to make crops flourish overnight. All it takes is for a Whinfell to gallop across a field of growing produce, and by the next day, the plants will have grown to fruition.
Some legends say these powerful creatures are commonly used as mounts for faeries who braid their manes into tiny stirrups and reins, and ride the Whinfell throughout the night, assisting them on their fruitful runs through the forests and fields. Should a human be so lucky to befriend a Whinfell, they must take great care not to undo the braids within its mane, lest they bring about the wrath of the fae.
While typically wary of humans, the Whinfell makes an excellent companion once their trust is gained. However, riders should steer clear of cities and brightly lit roads at night. The Whinfell are inexplicably drawn to artificial lights and can become so entranced in their glow, they may forget to watch where they are going!
Whether in their true magical colors or in disguise, they ride just like the Shires they resemble."

I've always found it harder to draw/paint horse heads from a front view, so I make studies like this one to practice that.

Raquel’s tentative first ride on her mare, Indigo, took place against the breathtaking backdrop of the snowy cliffs of Chestnut Ridge. As the horse’s hooves crunched through the fresh powder, Raquel marveled at the serenity and majesty of the winter landscape. Despite her initial nerves, the bond between rider and horse grew stronger with every careful step along the winding trails, creating a memorable and poignant beginning to their journey together.

I love Breyer's G1 Stablemate Morgan Mare--except for that raised foreleg. Never did care for that detail. So I decided to resculpt her to a standing position (a process I started, oh, about a year ago, because I am nothing if not a slow customizer.) She's done, though, and repainted to a rich liver chestnut. She's available at https://www.etsy.com/listing/1832981087/castanea-custom-liver-chestnut-breyer

This was the debut of my first revamped magic horse. 🐎✨
Originally posted on my alt instagram account.
Meet the Zala Whinfell. 🌸 The name Zala is of Slovene origin. It is a diminutive of the name Rozalija which is a form of the name Rosalia in many languages. Rosalia is further derived from the late Latin name derived from rosa, meaning "rose." I felt it was a perfect name for this pink steed. Lore:
"The Zala Whinfell has a particular love of the months between spring and summer. This is because it loves to snack on the petals of flowering plants. You can usually catch Zalas in blossoming meadows, munching on its favorite flowers like Beeblossom and Beebalm.
The Zala's magical coat was based on the Clouded Crimson moth, while their neutral coat is a chestnut based fleabitten grey.
You may also notice the neutral coat has a dorsal stripe and a small spot on its forehead. This was intentional. The Zala may be able to magically hide its form, but these are tiny giveaways to their true selves."

More horses!
It's only fair that Marilyn also gets a horse. Everyone should have a horse! Still slowly making my way through everything @esta-elavaris has written, but this should be the last one for her OCs (until there's more 👀)
A Chestnut Anglo-arabian mare. Hear me out: equine therapy. Marilyn must have heard about it, and maybe at one point she finds a nice looking stable offering day-rides, and maybe she wants to get some fresh air and it’s not that far from her flat and— Anyway, she loved it, she also found that her knee didn’t hurt as much as she thought it would. She found herself wanting to go back, loving the warm and calm energy of the horses and their soft noses.
One of her acquaintances noticed her interest and offered to give her informal lessons with her own horse, a retired show-jumping mare. Her friend tried explaining that mares have a reputation for being hormonal and difficult to work with, and that Chestnut horses tended to be more chaos-prone than others.
Hormonal, she could understand, especially if they were surrounded by idiot young stallions when she had been a multiple time national winner. The colour? She was reserving judgment on that one.
When she met Brimstone, she was taken aback by her fiery coat and temperament. Her friend showed her how to brush the mare, and Marilyn hesitated only a little before finding the activity incredibly meditative. As she learned to pick the hoof, she felt a little nip on her butt, and let out a yelp before standing back. She was shocked to see the argument between her friend and the mare, never before thinking there could be such a thing. Although her friend insisted on finishing, Marilyn persevered and managed to not get bitten anymore even as Brimstone kept a upset face.
Over time, she found herself offering to help her friend care for Brimstone, and slowly learning how to ride. She wasn’t planning on starting competitions, but she did like the idea of being able to canter in the forest and jump over fallen trees with her friend by her side. Plus it kept her in shape. She learned that Brimstone was possibly the most inquisitive horse in the stable, always wanting to understand new things, like new boots or new gloves (which she threw across the hall. To test their durability of course). She also didn’t bolt at things, unlike the other horses, she stood her ground and investigated. Marilyn grew to love that mare, and understood exactly why her friend loved her horse.
Eventually, her friend mentioned that she was looking for a new horse with which to enter competitions, but the cost of both horses were just a little over her budget. They decided to split the boarding for Brimstone, so Marilyn would have a leisure horse.
“Hell hath no fury like a chestnut mare"
So this got away from me a little, but I was motivated. It didn't come as easily as the others, since the concept didn't lend itself that well, but like Marilyn, I persevered!
I will be doing more of these when inspiration strikes, worry not, though I will -eventually- start on adding horses to many universes.
