all this to say it makes me think of i live in cheongdamdong, which i watched without subs and thoroughly enjoyed though i didn't understand a single word

so far my merry marriage is much more slice of life than many of the kdrama dailies i've watched. it has all the story/narrative elements the other dramas had and that you expect (look forward to/anticipate) from a daily drama--a central family with grandmas, her middle aged kids, their 20s and 30s kid; plutocrats who are "just like us"; a mom who abandoned her kid mystery; cohabitation, rich man/poor woman, childhood friends, workplace romance romcom hijinks. but it isn't really "about" any one single thing.

home for summer was "about" adopting a kid. the second husband was "about" getting revenge for a murdered grandma and kidnapped baby. the love in your eyes was "about" youngyi falling for the man who got her late husband's eyes through organ donation. suji and uri was "about" kids separated from their moms due to makjang shenanigans finding them and healing.

but two weeks in, my merry marriage doesn't really have a central driving premise so much as it has a group of characters who are all going about doing their best and kinda mostly failing to live their lives. the individual stories they're in are recognizable as what makes up a lot of dramas, but so far, they're not the driving narrative arc--gonghee's an intern contract worker who wants to be hired as permanent employee and become a clothing designer, but the show is not focused on urban workplace dynamics like sunny again tomorrow (2018 kbs daily) mostly was; dansoo is a chaebol with a tragic past and sunny, playful, insouciant/cheeky personality whose doting grandma decides he needs to actually earn a living and become and adult, but the drama isn't like mother of mine (a 2019 kbs weekender) where that was a major romantic conflict; the mom, myungja, has a husband who quit being a cop and hasn't helped financially since and mom who still lives in the country being a farmer, but most of her scenes are devoted to her lifelong competitiveness with her frenemy, joori.

like, the show is interested in all the petty little things that make up our daily lives--rent increase, a mean boss, loneliness, trying to get your siblings to give a fuck about an ageing parent, life after divorce, a failing practice; and all the ways we meet that pettiness--crying in despair because no one in your family seems to understand how much you all need money to get to the next day, having a crush on the boss who's nice to you, taking a poetry class, teasing your lifelong crush and being a total brat even though you're traumatized, sad, and scared.

for example, in today's episode after having a fainting spell from seeing blood (which reminded him of the night his father died), dansoo sits out on the balcony and plays a guitar and sings a song. gonghee comes out to listen to him and then we get a montage of the dad laying back pensively alone in bed, the lady with a clothing repair shop (no doubt his mom with amnesia who he thinks abandoned him) alone in her store, and then back to him signing about a breakup with gonghee listening to him quietly. that's not a scene from a typical daily! it's too quiet and without an immediate narrative payoff for most dailies. and i love it.

some other things i'm enjoying about the show:

the frenemy rivalry between myungja and joori. imagine having a frenemy since your high school days and you're now in your fifties with two grown ass kids! that's a relationship that's been nurtured, lol.

dansoo is surprisingly layered for a bratty chaebol, and i confess i thought park sang nam would be a bad actor but he's...good??? like he's believable and commits to dansoo 100%. as for dansoo, i delight in his floppy haired immature antics, but it's all underscored by how genuinely sweet he is/can be--how he helped the uncle when they were abroad and living on the streets, how he helps gonghee by telling her mom he's a contract employee like her when really he's a full time employee (and also the owner's grandson 🙄), how he pays a year's worth of rent when he hears the maengs are struggling to pay rent, and how he visits his dad's grave and asks him for courage and help cause he's scared.

i don't know if i enjoy the second leads, but i'm...intrigued by how bitchy kang ji na is. like she's in love with mingi, but she was so *mean* when she turned down his marriage proposal. i want to know the story there.

the grandma and her secretary. i'll always love yang hee kyung cause there's this like softness to her that reminds me of the old women in my family, and i fell for her way back during dalja's spring, and she's hilarious here as the chaebol grandma who constantly needs her secretary to remind her to stop coddling her full grown man grandson.

i think the show set out to be a lighthearted healing romcom type drama, and it's pulling it off.

I really want to see more of Moon Geun Young in more projects! *cries* I’ve finished the whole catch the ghost and I’m having a withdrawal syndrome now.. I don’t think I want to move on from this perfection for a while now~ 😭 because everything in this series was perfect, but especially her partner aka mr. kim seon ho. Their chemistry is just soo good I can’t! And they seem to have a lot of fun on the set, too! Thank you seon ho for taking care of her!

It’s funny how I can’t really remember her previous works storyline (marry me, mary!, cheongdamdong Alice, cinderella’s sister) because I didn’t really like the male leads

• (CJM was quite okay.. but he looks a liiiiittle bit too mature for her).

• PSH was in a scandal that degrades women totally, and I lost what little respect I had for him, now I can’t see him anymore because honestly he always seems creepy for me even before the scandal.

• JGS was the most normal back then and I shipped them too (I think) but he acts weirder by the day that he gives off a “tryhard” feels nowadays. Thus I can’t rewatch any of her previous rom-coms.

•maybe I can hope for another romcom with kim jae wook? I quite like him in marry me mary, he looks really good and he also took a good care for her on the set. This time, we can make him the male lead alright.

• Goddess of fire male lead was too old for her, can’t get the chemistry. Also she was dating kim bum, so I leaned more towards him, but it ended so I feel kinda weird about it lol

• Hopefully kim seon ho can be a normal one. So far so good, his acting is on point, probably because he’s a stage actor for so long, his expression and the little details are just so perfect. I’m actually hoping they can work together again eventhough I know the chances are sooooo loooooow but who knows?

hello there. i just finished reading your story lie to me and you mentioned in your notes it's inspired by a kdrama. as a fellow kdrama fan i'd like to know which kdramas are your favorites. also i've never watched goodbye mr black is it good? saranghae, unnie

General Kenobi! xDHi, darling! Hmmm actually, Lie to Me has nothing to do with Goodbye Mr Black. That was the idea... my first idea, actually, but I didn’t plan things through and I just went on writing and in the end, even though the idea was for it to be similiar/inspired by the kdrama, it’s actually quite different HAHAHAHA

But yeah... It’s one of my fav kdramas, actually. I enjoy it quite a lot. As for other fav kdramas... hmmmm... there’s Bridal Mask (fav ever), Bad Guys (1st season, I haven’t watched the second yet), Vampire Prosecutor (I’ll never forgive OCN for teasing us so much with Min Tae-Yeon and Yoo Jung-In and never making it past a platonic relationship. Ladies and Gentlemen, I’ll go down with this ship), Bride of the Century (rewatched it this weekend), Cheongdamdong Alice (currently rewatching it xD), Stranger (or Secret Forest), and the new favs are both Designated Survivor Korea and Chief of Staff (I’m simply in love with it, one of the best series I’ve ever watched in my entire life and believe me when I say I’ve watched much stuff). There are a few others I enjoy quite a lot, but I think those are my favs.

Moon Geun Yong is simply amazing and do I need to mention how talented Park Shi Hoo is? 

I’ve watched a few dramas with Shin Min Ah (my korean actress crush, she’s superb) but I haven’t watched anything yet with Lee Jung-Jae (I love him so very much!) 

And what are your fav kdramas? 

btw, both Designated Survivor and Chief of Staff are great inspiration for the political scenes between Reader and Hux in Bloodbound.
